Ah Too so water could be the answer to all my problems! I will try to increase my intake. I have been a bit slack with being away over the weekend so maybe that's why everything has got worse!

jenfraggle · 13/02/2012 12:11

I plan on having a natural 3rd stage simply because of my needle phobia. Interesting to hear about the delayed cord clamping, I guess my mw will discuss this kind of thing with me at some point?

pommedechocolat · 13/02/2012 12:33

With dd I know the cord wasn't clamped straight away as they asked dh several times if he wanted to spaced out.

I have no idea what happened to my placenta! When dd was day 3 I had a massive panic it had been forgotten and left in! It definitely came out as dh saw it but have no idea how! I guess injection.

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 13/02/2012 12:49

Jen it varies a lot on the MW and hospital about whether they are up to date on these things. My friend who is a MW does them at her hospital, but generally speaking it is something you have to do your own research on and decide for yourself. I too am needlephobic although it wasn't too bad having this jab as I was hormonal from the delivery.

Biscuits Here are a couple of links that I think give a fairly balanced view. My MW friend says that with phys 3rd stage initial blood loss is higher but you stop bleeding sooner. I had lochia for over 8 weeks after Dd so again this is something I am keen to try and avoid! Some good pages on this site including comparison and another here I had a read of baby centre and it is quite surprising how biased a lot of sources are toward a managed 3rd stage! If your placenta doesn't come away with a 3rd stage they will usually give you the synto to get things moving.

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 13/02/2012 13:28

I remember being quite surprised when the placenta came out - I had forgotten that it was still to come. I also don't remember getting the injection for it but I think I did. I asked the community MW a few weeks later what had happened to the meconium - how did they know it had all come out, and she said it would have been wrapped up in the membranes, so not to worry that there was some left inside. Just in case that occurs to anyone else, if there's meconium in their waters!

I am a bit late to this discussion but I had a blooming looong first stage, and a 20 minute second stage too. Managed third stage as I too, like biscuits was haemorraghing like mad bleeding somewhat heavily. I have no memory of any injection. The student mw and mw were trying to do some kind of gentle traction on cord to get placenta out, I totally wanted it over and done and said 'shall I not just push it out?' and proceeded to do so with one push- job done. I just wanted to stop faffing around with that stuff and concentrate on DD for the next 5 minutes I had before theatre. I was lucky, my other friend with a third degree tear also had a retained placenta- luckily she was also in theatre for her tear too Hmm

So on this note- I am getting to my section date, I am, I am, I am !!!!! Grin

What have you decided biscuits? doing it naturally or asking for a CS?

Oh, and my dh is a foot taller than me, and if I weighed more than him, good lord, I'd have put on 5 1/2 - 6 stone!!!! He isn't overweight, just 6'4" (like yours biscuits!) The similarities are almost odd- I checked. My DD was born at 14:35 too. Tall husband. Third degree tear. (check out my hormonal rambling)

Anyway, I just bought my friend who's coming to stay for the weekend a present on Amazon- and without really thinking did my usual tight-arse thing of super saver delivery. I will so regret that if its not here...eeekk!

And now I should go for a lie down while DD naps. Urgh, I'm tired and sore.

Biscuitsandtea · 13/02/2012 14:23

And we had a weird similarity with Gaviscon not working so well, but Rennies working when they didn't before. I'm worried now that instead of delivering a placenta for my 3rd stage I'm going to be delivering a surprise twin! Grin

Not decided about the CS yet - going to talk to the consultant next Tuesday and just raise my concerns and see what size the baby is by then. DH gets where I'm coming from because I was being a mardy melodramatic thing yesterday about my piles and how I was going to be incontinent for ever Hmm

I will do a VB if they think it'll be ok, but will make my birth plan very clear that I am concerned about downstairs damage! And if I don't hear DH mention it at least every 5 minutes and to every single person who comes in the room, he'll be in trouble. Even the lady who comes in to empty the bin - I don't care!

Biscuitsandtea · 13/02/2012 14:25

Oh, you know you can change delivery method once you've placed an order on Amazon if it hasn't despatched yet?

I know this because I accidentally forgot to do my usual tight arse thing once and ordered something with express delivery! ConfusedBlush

PopcornMouse · 13/02/2012 14:28

Really quick question, sorry to ask and run Blush

Does anyone know roughly what kind of referral/waiting time I can expect, having been referred to obstetrics? I stupidly didn't ask the GP Blush

Biscuitsandtea · 13/02/2012 14:34

I'm afraid I have no idea - in fact I have to confess that I don't even know what obstetrics is? What is it they need to do? Sorry if you've already told us this. Is it to do with the thyroid thing?

If its something that needs doing early on in the pg then I am sure they'll get it through quickly.

I have to say, if it were me I would phone the surgery and ask if they knew how long the referral should take so toucan follow it up if you've not heard anything in the right time frame? Or phone the hospital to ask how long it would take?

Sorry I can't help any more!

DreamingOfPeace · 13/02/2012 14:35

Can vary a lot- I was seen within 3 weeks, but others have been given an appointment for when its most appropriate popcorn, like 20 weeks ish? So varies I guess...

Oh, thats good biscuits, maybe I'll try and change it, even though it'll cost a blooming bomb as the things are coming from different sellers and to increase their delivery speed will cost more too. I wish I'd been more organised. Her birthday was January 20th, and I've known she was coming since way before then. Sigh... I thought of you at 1am when Gaviscon Advance was just not cutting it and I had to go downstairs for the Rennies. I'm finding them surprisingly enjoyable, more so than the Gaviscon!

DreamingOfPeace · 13/02/2012 14:36

You do know biscuits, obs and gynae- we've been there with our ravaged downstairs!!! They fixed us Smile

Biscuitsandtea · 13/02/2012 14:41

I feel as if I should know what obstetrics should mean? Is that the 'Ob'' bit of the American term 'Ob/Gyn'?

Is it just general pregnancy matters?

If it is, I started off as consultant led and had my first consultant appt at the 20 week scan date. When I had my 12 week scan they just made me a 20 week scan and cons appt.

But then eveything I was consultant led for was 'end loaded' for the pg (ie premature birth and 3rd degree tear)

Dream have you got Rennies on prescription? My Gaviscon is on prescription but I'm buying the Rennies so I resent them more even though I think they work better!!!! (Please see my previous post for anyone who hasn't already realised I'm a tight arse Grin)

Biscuitsandtea · 13/02/2012 14:42

Cross posts Dream - So obstetrics are just these mysterious 'consultants' that we get referred to then?

I feel I've done mine a disservice to have not even noticed a job title when they put me back together! I should be sending them a Christmas card Grin

PopcornMouse · 13/02/2012 14:47

The GP said the obsetrician is the technical term for for "pregnancy doctor" :o :o

Thanks dream - I only saw the GP on Friday, so if I've not received a letter by next Friday (2 weeks?) I'll ring and check they have my referral through etc.

I think it will be the same for me biscuits - Dr Google seems to think I'll be seen more in the final stages, probably for more scans, as there's an increased risk of stillbirth (trying not to dwell on that one, and 20 weeks seems yonks away at the moment :o )

Right, must stop mentalling, back to work!!

Wants3 · 13/02/2012 14:56

whispers quietly, I weigh slightly less now than I did at booking in! My bump is getting bigger and midwife said it was measuring right for weeks so not sure what is going on, sorry Blush
I was looking online at baby rockers as I want one that has an adjustable back. I found one I liked and can you believe it, a friend popped round with the exact same chair! She had been given it to take to the jumble sale and thought of me! It is hardly used and freshly washed. Lucky me:)
First day of half term and I spent 5 hours interviewing people to cover my hours while I'm on ML! Planning to chill for the rest of the day I think, ( might bung a load of washing in the machine when the dog decides to move from my lap!).
I requested cord clamp delay with ds1 but because he had cord around his neck for ventous delivery it had to be cut quick. Don't remember delivering placenta but was trusses up being stitched at the time! With ds2 I think it was delayed a bit because cord was long enough for him to lay on my chest for a while. I watched my sisters placenta being delivered and it was amazing to see what had been looking after the baby all that time!

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 13/02/2012 15:09

Hello! A question for Dream actually! How easy is it to fit the britax 2 way elite as a froward facer and do you know how safe it is in FF? Finally got round to calling the in car safety people and this is the only seat that fits the freelander. I am a bit nervous as I can't try before I buy anywhere :s

I can remember my placenta delivery quite well, it sort of plopped out and felt like a big lump of jelly cubes! The MW also showed me round it which was very interesting. Glad I am not the only one thinking of a phys 3rd stage, although I would settle for delayed cord clamping and prob would just go for that if I hadn't been so ill with the jab. The puking didn't last very long but it was all in the first hr and I just want to be able to hold my baby rather than having to give the baby to DH for 40 odd minutes! Lovely for him, not for me when I wanted the ordeal over and I spent most of my labour being sick from one thing or another!

No idea about referrals sorry! Although definitely a good idea to be aware as we have had a lot of faff with scan appointments not being booked I think it was?

NinjaChipmunk · 13/02/2012 15:52

I am sooooo bored. I have resorted to toruring myself looking at local houses I can't afford in order to entertain myself. Its still freezing in my office, its making my hands look like an old persons. I really should do some work but have no motivation.
On the plus side its my scan tomorrow!! Yippee!!

Biscuitsandtea · 13/02/2012 16:04

Poor Ninja!!!!! Can't believe you're still freezing Sad

But yay for your scan!!!! Am I right in thinking that you're going to find out if it's a boy or girl? Hope it goes brilliantly!!!!

My legs ache today - I've been ironing for hours because I have to keep sitting down Hmm

Biscuitsandtea · 13/02/2012 16:06

Incidentally I love a bit of rightmove searching! I did plenty of that when I should have been at work Grin

NinjaChipmunk · 13/02/2012 16:15

a bit flouncy but I could make it home

NinjaChipmunk · 13/02/2012 16:15

and yes, we hope to find out the sex. Must remember to take some snacks for ds as he's coming too and they might keep him quiet!

Biscuitsandtea · 13/02/2012 16:17

That'll be gorgeous as soon as you've de-chintzed it, but it has a good basic style.

It'll look awesome Grin

Biscuitsandtea · 13/02/2012 16:19

I've just been debating this afternoon whether to put DS in nursery next Tuesday pm as we have our next growth scan and I think I need DH to be focused on that rather than trying to keep DS quiet? I really want to be able to focus on getting our questions answered.

NinjaChipmunk · 13/02/2012 16:23

its probably worth putting him in then, even if he's being good it'll be distracting for at least one of you if he's there?
