Ok, I did it!

Now shall we get our stats down again? I think we have had some joiners since we last did it.
Copy/paste the list and add yourself to it.

Hello All. Well I have only just got up and it is 12.30pm here! Lovely dh whisked dd off this morning so I could have a proper rest - bliss.

Oh dear allyco, I can't believe you are still so poorly and now the cheeky thing is breech on top of all that! I know my sis had a c/s with her number 2 who was breech (but then a totally successful VBAC with no 3), I think it is partly to do with higher risks and noone knowing how to deliver them anymore because it's avoided where possible. Maybe you could find somebody who specialises in this? Don't know if they exist or not, let us know how you get on with your next appointment anyway. We're all thinking of you, it must be so hard to still feel so awful.

Pacinofan - due April 24, aged 38, dh 46. We are having a girl, undecided about name. Just want a birth with my dh there, hoping I don't go into labour whilst he's working overseas. Would like minimum intervention, planning to use gas and air and tens machine, desperately don't want a caesarian! Be really, really glad when April arrives and she is here, feel like Moby Dick!

FirstTimer40 · 22/01/2006 14:45

Hi all
Good idea re new thread, have added me in (am the oldest so far!). Pacinofan, I took the liberty of adding you to the list (as you were on a separate message). Started my NCT antenatal classes this week and was great, lovely people with many same thoughts as me and all five ladies due within a week of each other and live in a 2 mile radius (friends for the future I hope). And had my first Braxton-Hicks contraction today, took my breath away and breathed a sigh of relief when after 10 mins I had not had another one (so presume not in labour -ha ha)

Codlitiz - dd was also mean to be an only chld! Hence big age gap. I am most spoilt member of board. Not content with smoked salmon and champagne, I treated us to a night at Woolley Grange last night! [smug]

Homsa - due 12.4.06, aged 34, DH 39, DS 2.7, expecting a girl. Scared of needles and drips (but not as much as Colditz!) and hoping to avoing another cs.

TonTon, I'm starting to wonder whether I should hire a doula too. DH, I regret to say, is not very supportive of VBAC (went to medical school, but has never practised as a doctor - I think that explains it). I think I might need someone to fight my corner and also to coach me through labour a bit when I start to panic (mw last time just sat in a corner taking notes...) How much can you expect to pay for a doula?

allyco · 22/01/2006 19:59

am not sure this'll work, but here goes...

have highlighted and stuff andhere's my bit...

allyco due 14/04/06 age (41 - shush) DH 44 dd19 dd13 dd8 and dd16 months. Expecting a BOY!! Will be glad when it is all over, not so much scared of birth but having totally crap puke-filled pregnancy

Bollocks. It didn't work. I am jinxed.

colditz · 23/01/2006 00:12

Oh crap oh crap oh crap.

I have my glucose tolerance test tomorrow, 8am, that means 2 needles in 2 hours, and my magic cream will wear off inbetween them, or they won't be able to find a vein or something.....

This is all because I am slightly above the weight limit at which they like to check for diabetes, and fundus is 3 centimetres too high, but I have a fat tummy anyway, how the hell can they accuratly guess the size of my baby by the size of my fundus?!!!

I feel really resentful of entire medical profession when I have to have needles, I had my anti D jab on Friday and it hurt....

And those stupid people who say "Ooooo, how are you going to cope with pushing a baby out if you are scared of a tiny little needle?"

Grr. I am scared af needles, not babies.

OP posts:
tonton · 23/01/2006 09:54

Homsa - my doula is charging £450. I think £450-500 is normal, certainly in London. I met 4 altogether which wa svery worthwhile as they were all very different (of course, being differnt human beings!). But also different in their style/approaches. Some more new-agey than others. Mine is more medically minded (not anti-hospital births) and has a very jolly hockey-sticks attitude which I love!

allyco · 23/01/2006 10:49

thank you colditz you are obviously a clever computer type person, unlike me!

poor you for your GTT. Don't have any suggestions to help you really as I s'pose whatever anyone says you have heard it all before. Will be thinking of you at 8.00am tomorrow. Let us know how you get on.

I am having another FANTASTIC day today. Youngest DD ws up half the night with a(nother)cold and cough. She then trashed the house before we left for the childminder and schoool run and then just as we were leaving I glanced down at the dishwasher and it was like one of those cartoons where something leaks and huge clouds of bubbles start appearing, only this wasn't a cartoon - it was my kitchen!!

Turned the bugger off and left message for DH (who is sleeping off night shift) to sort it when he gets up, so no doubt that will mean a note from him saying he couldn't do anything and I will be on a plumber search when I get in tonight....

My life is such comedy

allyco · 23/01/2006 10:51

tonton can I show my ignorance and ask what does a doula do? Is she like a midwife (I mean does she deliver the baby or do anything medical??).

I have heard of doulas before but I doubt they have them where I live!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does she stay with you all the way through teh birth?

tonton · 23/01/2006 11:52

A doula isn't a midwife - she can't deliver the baby etc. She is a woman who is very experienced in attending births, ideally has had a few herself. Her role is to help ensure you have the birth experience you want nas far as that's possible), to fight your corner with any midwives, doctors etc, and maybe most importantly, to help keep you and dh calm. Dopesn't matter whether it's home, hospital, 'natural' or cs. It's sort of like having your mum or big sister there but not annoying in way family members can be!
doula_site

tonton · 23/01/2006 11:54

She should stay with you from when you call her (when you start getting contractions) so she might come to youir house and then go with you to hospital if that's where you're going. And then she should stay right to the bitter end and probably for a bit afterwards. She will probably visit once of twice after the birth as well.

pepperrabbit · 23/01/2006 12:16

Is Colditz back yet ? how was it? i'm off to the hospital this afternoon so we can compare notes later!
I like the sound of a doula, I think having someone there "on your side" is almost the most important bit, when it's all a bit confusing and scary - though since i mentioned DH is a complete wuss and isn't sure he's capable of being there this time (he had to leave the room for the scan!), my sis & best friend have both offered to come with me - could get crowded...

tonton · 23/01/2006 12:27

Anyone else starting to feel the third-trimester blues? I'm nearly 28 weeks and am suddenly feeling much more tired, plus having headaches and feeling nauseous again. Seeems a bit early.

spots · 23/01/2006 13:48

Ah Tonton, that must have been me the last couple of weeks. I don't think I had this with DD. Have been unable to drag myself into any sort of activity, and feel limp and exhausted all the time. Self pitying surge has just left the building. But mince for brains. This morning DD woke me up calling 'mummy, mummy!' and I went through to tell her it was still night, shush now, more sleep. She obligingly settled down then popped straight back up again. 'Tomorrow, tomorrow! It will be soon!' she kept imploring, but I kept saying 'sleep now, sleep sleep' etc. (best 3am soothing voice, you know the one...)

Then my foot touched the heater and I thought 'why is that heating on?'

Then DH's alarm clock went offf.

It was ten to seven.

Colditz, hope it went ok this morning - was thinking about you. xxx

colditz · 23/01/2006 14:05

Ugh, I had it, was very brave and took dp's mp3 player, so I lost myself in earsplitting Nirvana.

I had a needle in right arm first then the left. It is totally irrational for me to be frightened, I can't even feel the needle go in because I use copious amounts of emla cream! But I had it, and I hope not to have any more tests for the rest of the pregnancy.

how did yours go, pepperrabbit?

And spots, I totally empathise with the limp, "surely-it's-still-3-AM?" feeling. Ds's favourite phrase has become "Wake up, Mummy!"

Tonton, I am actually feeling a bit better now, as until a week ago was very stressed and horribly hormonal. I do feel very heavy and tired though.

OP posts:
Homsa · 23/01/2006 16:09

Well done Colditz! You must be so relieved!!! I've got a blood test on Thursday (only for anaemia, they don't do that glucose challenge here), and then DS has a blood test the day after, I'm dreading that one even more, how can a blood test on a 2-year-old be anything other than traumatic? Poor thing

So sorry allyco, of course that copy/paste thing didn't work, I meant to write Ctrl+C, not ALT+C!

Thanks for the link Tonton, I will look into that. Definitely have the 3rd-trimester blues as well, I feel so lethargic and inefficient, just putting shoes on me and DS is a major challenge! It doesn't help that DS is just getting over a bad case of flu at the moment and has been waking almost hourly for the last 3 nights. A timely reminder of what newborns are like...! Still, at least we're not having our babies in the middle of winter. It will be much easier in the spring, is what I keep telling myself!

MrsEvs · 23/01/2006 17:55

God Allyco, you really are having a nightmare aren't you? Hope your house wasn't totally flooded on your return.

Well done Colditz for getting through the glucose thing. I know about irrational fears, for ages I couldn't do trains or stations for some reason and people couldn't grasp it at all. They also had no concept of what it took for me to actually get on a train when I did manage it - I'm very proud of you! I'm not really afraid of needles but dislike the blood drawing bit a great deal, I find out today if I have passed mine or not so fingers crossed, as really can't face doing the 3 hour fasting one.
