1,000 posts into the very popular September 2012 thread, here's a new one, for knicker checking, boob prodding, toilet rushing, oh and eating the entire contents of the fridge or McDonalds

Here's to our tiny beans and all the lovely ladies lost along the way.

Full steam ahead to booking in and positive scans aplenty.

Loopyhasanotherbean · 28/02/2012 08:43

got our "second" 12 week scan this afternoon, so hoping bean is now big enough for them to do the nuchal test. Also half expecting yet another due date as we've had 4 different dates thrown in to the hat up to this point! Feels like a lot longer than a week ago since we had our first one, but will be nice to get a bonus peek at him/her.

We had the nuchal with DS and will do with this one and also intend to find out the sex. We seem to be different to most of you though, in that if it came back as high risk, i would opt for further testing, as i know there is no way i could cope with a disabled child. We have no family support where we live and very few friends, and i think it will be hard enough to cope with a 22 month old and a newborn, and in all probability all whilst recovering from a CS (had EMCS under GA with DS 1 and he had apgar of 1 so likely a CS will happen this time) but if there wasn't the light at the end of the tunnel that things will get easier when DC2 gets to xyz age i don't think either of us would last long before we had a breakdown. And i also don't think it would be fair on our existing DS as his life would be affected so much both in childhood, and probably in adulthood as he'd be bound to feel responsible for him/her after we'd gone...but credit to anyone who feels they are up to parenting a disabled child, i just know we aren't strong enough and would have no support whatsoever so for us the tests are important. Hoping it won't be an issue though, DS was something like 1 in 8000 which was really good, and hoping things are the same or similar with this one.

Re when you find out, here we got a letter with DS a few weeks after the test, and i think they said you would get a call within a week if it wasn't low risk. And the bloods have to be done on the same day as the nuchal test, otherwise the results are meaningless. Here you have the scan, and then go into another room where they take your blood. Hate having blood taken, i have veins that like to hide and it usually takes them a few attempts, so luckily its that way round as they didn't get as far as taking my blood last week as the scan showed bean was 11 weeks not 12 weeks, and would be annoyed if they'd taken blood for no reason!

Macaroons · 28/02/2012 08:51

Yes I got the results in 30 minutes which was really good! My bean is 1 in 13793 so I'm more relieved

lurkingmurking · 28/02/2012 10:00

Thali we didn't have the tests with DS and won't with this one. I wouldn't act on it if I was high risk with further tests or whatever IYSWIM so didn't really see the point.

Loup23 · 28/02/2012 10:31

Good luck to sassle and loopy for scans today!

ellie I had my scan two weeks ago today and still haven't heard re the resukt from the blood tests which were done the same day. Luckily I also paid for a private one and at that clinic they took the blood the week before and then on the day of the scan gave me the results of 1 in 9250, but i'd like the NHS result as concerned now about what loopy says about bloods having to be taken on the same day... they weren't at the private clinic....

Telling three good friends tonight and looking forward to it. Hope everyone else is well!

rightontime · 28/02/2012 10:34

Loopy, I completely agree and we feel the same. Maybe with my first son I would have been fine with a disabled child and maybe even with my second but I don't feel that I would now be able to give my existing children such a good experience in life if I had a disabled child to look after as well. I know they can be lovely children but the care they would demand would be much higher than your average baby.

I never had the nuchal test with my first 2. I didn't feel the need but I was quite young and figured my risk would be pretty low for that reason. And I always just felt that everything would be ok anyway.

My risk for the last baby was 1 in 350 which was still classed as low risk for DS but I needed extra checks for the low PAPPA levels which indicate increased risk of stillbirth. Waiting for my results to come in the post this time. The longer I need to wait, the better IMO.

It is worth remembering though that the test looks for chromosomal defects some of which may mean that the baby cannot survive after birth. Having an amnio or whatever else they offer would give definite answers so if your baby is not going to be able to survive you can make the choice to terminate early on rather than carry for another 6 months for the baby to die after birth anyway. Not nice to think about but worth considering if you are undecided on testing. I would however like to point out that I am not very knowledgeable on the test and some of my information could be wrong, This is just my understanding of it all.

york67 · 28/02/2012 11:29

Good luick to those having scans today.
I have my booking appointment on Thursday and my 12 week scan on 15th March.
Wasn't offered a nuchal before but I will probably have one this time along with blood test. Know my risk is going to be high anyway due to age.
Not sure what i will do if they come back really high.

york67 · 28/02/2012 11:35

Hope everything is ok clara

Thali34 · 28/02/2012 11:47

Thanks for all the input ladies. Its a very personal decision, but good to hear others thoughts and have a bit of a chat about it.

Good luck today sasslejane and loopy - here's hoping for another great week of scans for us all!

flipflopper · 28/02/2012 11:53

Hi all,i am so worried about my scan tomorrow!
I just cant think of anything else. Ive got no reason to beleive it will be anything bad, ive had a good 8 wk scan, no bleeding, boobs stilll sore, but my sickness is a lot better and i just dont FEEL pregnant!

Good luck to people who are having theirs today. x

Loopyhasanotherbean · 28/02/2012 13:10

york i'm older than most on here i think too, but i was told something a few weeks back that surprised me, apparently more Downs babies are actually born to people in their 20's than those in their 30's, but it's just that because there tend to be historically less babies born to people in their 30's, the percentage is slightly higher (which i guess makes sense), but my doctor seems to think that age isn't the be all and end all re these things....other factors than age...although i've not looked into it at all.

rightontime i know of someone via mumsnet who sadly recently lost a baby at about 18 weeks gestation, it had a condition that they were told was "incompatible with life" and they knew this several weeks before the baby died as it was picked up during one of the scans/tests....personally in that situation i cannot imagine carrying around a baby that you know will never survive being born, and for me i think that to know as early as possible so that i could arrange a termination would be preferable to the experience of losing a baby at 18 weeks. From a mental health as well as physical health point of view...and to avoid the experience of presumably actually having to give birth to the baby by that stage.

but back to cheerier thoughts, we are heading off shortly for our scan, can't wait to see bean again, and hope sassie's goes well too.

Littlecherublegs · 28/02/2012 14:07

Had my 12 week scan today - so exciting!!!!! Grin
It was such an amazing experience!! Baby had a regular and strong heartbeat and was wriggling about loads!! Got a cool scan pic where its got one arm and one leg stuck up in the air!! Looks very cute!! Smile

Had the nuchal / blood tests and was told I would hear the results in about 2 weeks if I was low risk / there was nothing wrong; sooner (within about 5 days) if anything was wrong. Though I was assured that all looked healthy and normal and how it should and they couldnt see any reason why all tests shouldnt be fine. Smile

They also said I was exactly 12 weeks today (I thought I was 11+2) so my EDD is now 11/09/12, which is good and sooner than I thought! Smile

sassle and loopy how did your scans go? Ok I hope!
And anyone else having them today or over the next few days, good luck!!

Big Grin all round!!

Loup23 · 28/02/2012 15:06

Yay congratulations littlecherub Great scan news! Grin

Macaroons · 28/02/2012 15:21

Yay for more good scan news! And fingers crossed for those with upcoming scans!

Just noticed we will be reaching 1000 posts soon! Time flies, eh?

Loopyhasanotherbean · 28/02/2012 15:27

our scan was good but bean was moving about so much that they couldn't measure the nuchal fold :( so now got to go to the doctors in a couple of weeks for bloods for a triple test, not read up on it yet but the hospital reckon its as accurate as the combined blood/nuchal tests. Couldn't believe how much its grown in a week. EDD hasn't changed since the new one last week, so EDD confirmed as being 11/9 - so the same as you littlecherublegs...although i was told that if end up going for an ELCS, might happen at 39 weeks but a long time between now and then!

MadMonkeys · 28/02/2012 15:28

Great to hear about everones good scans.

ballroomblitz · 28/02/2012 16:15

Great scans news littlecherub and Loopy and hope yours went ok too sassle.

Well I think I'll be deciding against having the nuchal done, unless dp wants it done. Dp doesn't know what I've decided yet so I've sent him away to work tonight and told him to think about what he wants and we can discuss it in the morning.

I really don't see the point for myself personally. I wouldn't go for amnio and I wouldn't have a termination (unlawful in NI unless affects it mother's health anyway although I know that can easily be remedied by a trip to England). For instance ds's condition could have been picked up through amnio last time. It is also a chromosome disorder that sometimes is mistaken for Down's during the test. Even if I had of been told his actual chromosome disorder while I was pregnant with him I would have goggled and worried myself sick over some of the behavioural, physical and social problems cited (most of them dismissed by his geneticist as a load of rubbish). In the US something like 58% of babies diagnosed with his disorder are terminated :( I thank my lucky stars every day to be blessed with a healthy, happy little boy.

Hope everythings ok Claravet

JessTT · 28/02/2012 16:31

Hi Ladies,
Am new to this thread (only just found it) - hope it's not too late to join in ;-)

Am 10w with 2nd baby (have 16mo dd) and went to my booking appointment with the midwife today which was nice....seems real now! :-)
Have been feeling pretty rubbish which after a pretty lovely pregnancy first time round is a bit of a shock but think am coming out of the it.....just really tired.
Just noticed your post thali and just thought I'd say you are not on your own not choosing the nuchal test. I didn't with my first and won't be with this one either as, like you, I wouldn't have acted on the results anyway so what is the point in worrying.....

Anyone else suffering a bit of insomnia? I keep waking up at 4 or 5am and not being able to get back to sleep (then having a certain little person wake up at 6am anyway!) which is sooooo annoying - am normally a really deep sleeper and slept so well throughout first pregnancy! Anyway, am hoping its a short phase!
xxx

Claravet · 28/02/2012 17:49

Hey guys, congrats to everyone on good scans. Ours was not do good, measuring 6 weeks not 9-10 and no heartbeat. Can't confirm till next week but not looking hopeful as I am sue we conceived 1st week in Jan. am gutted but we will be fine. At least we know we can get pregnant!
Good luck to everyone xx

Prunia · 28/02/2012 18:42

Hi there,
Had the nuchal done today, baby wouldn't keep head still so took over an hour to get measurements which were fine. I'm 41 so pre tests my chance of abnormalities was 1 in 48, after the scan & bloods it dropped to 1 in 305 - same as a 35 year old apparently.. So the consultant was wheeled in to talk over amnio & cvs if we were leaning that way. He said that on the bright side there's a 99.7% chance of a normal healthy baby.

We're going to think about it. The odds sound good to me but dp is still concerned.
Apart from that babs looked strong & active, nasal bone visible etc.
We've decided to tell family tomorrow, no matter what we decide in the future.. Off to work now, my head is a bit wrecked tbh.

Thali34 · 28/02/2012 18:50

So sorry claravet xox
Happy for others with good scan results.

flipflopper, ballroom and I are with you tomorrow... hope you feeling a bit better about things. I've been very nervous too, but got to the stage of looking forward to it - its a milestone we've all been waiting for, and hopefully it will be good news, but what will be will be.

I'm another one whose been waking in the early hours - 4 or 5ish (usually to pee!) and then struggling to get back to sleep! I suppose the brain just kicks in. Can take a couple of hours to get back to sleep (which is no good on a work day!) :(

twizzlestix · 28/02/2012 19:42

So sorry claravet

Great news littlecherub and loopy I have to say I shed a tear seeing an actual baby on the screen!

prunia glad scan went well and that your NT result improved so much, 1 in305 is well above the at risk level isn't? It must be a difficult decision to make...

Macaroons · 29/02/2012 07:15

Welcome jess, and glad that most scans results were good

So sorry clara, take care

Good luck with scans thali flipfoipper & ballroom

rightontime · 29/02/2012 07:34

Sorry to hear that Claravet

funchum8am · 29/02/2012 07:41

claravet I'm so sorry, I know how it feels, if it is bad news. Mumsnet is brilliant for sharing how you're feeling and realising that sadly you're not alone. Keep us posted on how things go.

sasslejaney84 · 29/02/2012 08:35

clara so sorry to hear that hun, take care of yourself

My scan went well, baby was meeasuring at 11+2 not the 12+5 I thought it was, so I'm now due on the 16th of september! The peanut was being awkward!! He/she wouldn't stretch out but it was just in the limits for them to do the nuchal, and everything was fine with that, measuring just 1.1mil so the sonographer said that put me in low risk. But that will be confirmed by letter within 2 weeks

It was my younger brothers 18 th birthday on monday and as I was having my scan on tuesday he asked me to go yesterday, he was amazed at the pic of the baby! And my SIL is having boys!!

Can't wait for the 20 weeks scan now!!
