Hope you don't mind the slight tweaking of the thread title :) I was feeling creative! Not that it matters, at this rate it won't last more than a week...!

Where do you live Parsley? I'm in NW Kent and it's just grey and wet! It was snowing heavily earlier but it hasn't settled!

FrillyMilly · 16/12/2011 10:30

MissRee you need to ask your midwife what policy is as it varies from place to place. I was booked in to give birth at hospital with midwife led care at my booking in appointment. Does it not say on the front of your notes where you plan to give birth? As for the birth plan I just wrote some brief things in the section of my notes. Such as would prefer active birth, want placenta jab, want baby to have vitamin k, want baby delivered on to my chest for skin to skin without baby being washed, DH wants to cut cord. I didn't go in to too much detail as I was happy to go with the flow. The midwife asked loads of questions about what I wanted as we went along during labour anyway. I also made sure DH knew of specifics so he could advocate for me.

FrillyMilly · 16/12/2011 10:33

Is anyone else feeling lots of pressure low down? Baby has flipped to the left, can feel his bottom and kicks are on the right now. Feel like I need to wee every ten minutes but when I go I hardly wee at all. Even been leaning forward to make sure I completely empty my bladder. Made my trip to the supermarket last night very uncomfortable.

GiraffeAHolic · 16/12/2011 10:34

Anyone had ketones in their urine? Apparently I have today, been told to drink plenty. They're also concerned about ankle swelling so got to keep an eye on that. Oh and baby is now back to back again

That was a productive nearly 38 week appointment! But 2/5 - 3/5 engaged and she reckons the discharge was probably a show, so not all bad news Smile

No snow here Smile

FrillyMilly · 16/12/2011 10:38

Giraffe I had them when I was hospitalised for hyperemesis early on in pregnancy. I had ++++ if I remember correctly. It's a sign of dehydration. Make sure you drink loads other wise you can end up with a kidney/urinary infection.

ParsleyandChestnutStuffingLion · 16/12/2011 10:39

I'm in East Surrey missree. We are just on the south side of the North Downs though so do tend to get some freakish weather. That said I'm a stop away from home and it has settled but only a dusting. I think he may have over panicked unless it is worse at home !

MissRee · 16/12/2011 10:40

Thanks Frilly I guess I'll have to ask at next appointment. It says what hospital I want to give birth at on my notes but the MLU is within the hospital so that makes it no clearer!

GiraffeAHolic · 16/12/2011 10:40

Oh yay Sad thanks frilly

FrillyMilly · 16/12/2011 10:48

Was it your first wee of the day? Doctor told me it's normal to see them then. When I had them I had kept no fluid down for 2 days. Even after being on drips all day and getting rid of the ketones they showed again the next day after I had been to sleep.

SantaSHO · 16/12/2011 10:49

I hired a tens from boots last time. My waters burst at home and by the time u had showered the contractions had started. I put the machine on then before leaving for the hospital and kept it in until I was told to take it off just before pushing.
Looking back I don't think it helped me much with the contractions BUT dd was lying pressing on a nerve ending and it really helped with that.
If i knew I would be having a vbirth then I would hire one again.
Better to try it and have it not work than to wish I had it when I didn't. Iykwim. Hth

ghost - snow is melting now :(

everyone else - I dislike being drunk and have been told both pethidine and meptid are like being horrifically drunk with no chance of sobering up. I honestly cannot think of many things worse. I am going with hypno, water and possibly entonox. I am determined to have the birth I want - active & drug and pain free :)

How is everyone getting on with the perineal massage? I found it a bit burny and uncomfortable during and after the first couple of goes, but now it doesn;t feel like it's doing anything... I guess that's a good thing? Means I'm stretchier...? :D

Massive amount of cross posts. Whoops.

Iv had keytones before. Although not enough for them to be concerned with. Also have swollen ankles which seem worse as the day gets on

Oeisha · 16/12/2011 11:03

giraffe Ketones are produced when your body's 'unwell'. It can be a sign of GD, it can be a sign that you've not eaten enough, it's very common to find ketones if you've been sick. Quite a few people find that not eating brekkie can cause them to have low levels of ketones. Basically ketones are produced when your body's burning body fat and not calories from foods....it's more complex than that I suspect, but was told this in hospital when I had ketones (not surprising with the amoutn of vomiting I'd done). Drinking will help, but you're gonna maybe need to snack a bit too...

Oeisha · 16/12/2011 11:06

cakes Tried lastnight. DH looked like Paul McCartney he was in pain Confused he was taking it all VERY seriously and was very unimpressed with the process...and "god, you're really gunky, is that normal"... Hmm He was also convinced he couldn't be doing it right. Might show him some more resources and see what he thinks of those.

MakesXmasCakesWhenStressed · 16/12/2011 11:20

I found a good PDF somewhere - want me to email it to you?

Giraffe ketones are just from not eating/drinking enough. I've had them several times (mw appointments are usually between 8.30 and 9.30 so urine sample is fmu) they weren't concerned until I went in to hospital the other week and I had lots of + the mw was quite concerned, but after seeing me eat (and eat and eat because I was starving!) She was much happier! (I had grabbed a breakfast bar for breakfast and we were on our way home for lunch at 1 when decided to go in, it was 2.30 and i just hadn't had a chance to grab anything)

greenlady78 · 16/12/2011 11:27

cakes oeisha tried the massage and found that there is an specific area that is actually quite tender...did you feel that at all? Will ask MW about it next time, will try and keep doing it, will have another go tonight Smile

Just got a letter to confirm my Maternity Allowance and laughed out loud when I read this:

Other changes that affect your benefit

You must tell us if you

*die Confused

"Shirley" that is not possible....hihihihihih

GiraffeAHolic · 16/12/2011 11:38

Thanks everyone. It was FMU but then my samples always are, otherwise I forget to do it.

It wasn't my normal midwife so perhaps this one was just more observant, I'm not going to worry about it will just increase fluids.

Made my nearly 40 week appointment for 30th December Shock

ParsleyandChestnutStuffingLion · 16/12/2011 11:56

I've also had ketones when I went to A&E earlier in pregnancy Doctor told me off for not eating. Told doctor reason for not eating was that I had been stuck there for 3 hours!

GiraffeAHolic · 16/12/2011 12:05

I'm just ploughing through my notes from today and MW has written "FHH with sonicaid for 2 minutes following contraction 130 - 145bpm"

Huh? Does that mean she felt a contraction when she was feeling my tummy??

addictediam · 16/12/2011 12:15

Sounds like it giraffe, did you feel your bump get hard?

MakesXmasCakesWhenStressed · 16/12/2011 12:22

Well not a tender area - just generally a bit burny ... DH went slowly and the next time it was less and now - nothing :)

Wormshuffler · 16/12/2011 12:39

I was apparently having contractions the entire time I was on the monitor the other day. I couldn't feel them until I saw them happening on the read out ! Had a few today too.

GiraffeAHolic · 16/12/2011 13:04

Not noticeably so. Been having a few irregular ones since yesterday afternoon though.

Mum2be79 · 16/12/2011 14:29

Thank you so much for the info regarding meptid and pethidine. I've never had an opiate before so I will probably take whatever is on offer! I am DEFINITELY a big fan of 'active births'. If it's anything like breaking a toe, walking into a bed post (as I've just done!?) and having colitis, jumping and hopping about like a kangaroo does help take the mind of it!!!

Scan went okay today. I've lost a little more fluid (AFI 6cm - so down 2cm on a week ago). But the placenta is working fine and although baby's growth is on the lower end, it's still within the norm. The weight was estimated at 6lbs 2oz today - which I thought for 37 weeks + 5 days is pretty good going.

I've got to go back next Friday for ANOTHER scan and the consultant said 'we'll go from there' so 50% expecting an induction the week between Christmas and New Year if I've had more fluid loss.

The best news was that they aren't going to induce me today or next week as that was my biggest fear. I have an important appointment tomorrow night - going out for DH's work's Christmas Party!!! Grin
