Hands around a mixture of V-shaped pillows, pregnancy pillows, and re-arranges the glittery vom buckets ready.

Gets the jelly snakes going, along with some Cadburys for good measure, and a strategically placed fruit bowl to disguise the unhealthy choices.

Flicks the duster round, sinks down into a comfy sofa and awaits the rest...

It's a shame you can't turn your dh's medical bit off sometimes Dream Grin

I know it wouldn't be ideal if any of our beans came at 24 weeks but at least you tick a different box at the hospital and I feel as though maybe they'd fight a hit harder for you? Who knows? Irrelevant anyway as we're all going to sneeze our babies out at the appropriate time - 37-40 weeks thank you very much. No going over due or any of that malarky.

Fact.

TooImmature2BDumbledore · 07/12/2011 20:44

So if 24 weeks gestation isn't great, at what point do babies become not only viable but likely to do well? 28 weeks? 32? Anyway, it took so bloody long between 20 and 24 that I am keeping it as a milestone!

Oh no, Dream, don't like the sound of a link between junk food in pg and fat children! Still, DH and I have sworn to turn over a new leaf once Bean is born and I've recovered physically. We intend to start a whole new exercise regime, stop eating like pigs and get uber-fit and skinny. I will do it!

My hips ache, grr! I limped through the house to feed the dog going ow, ow, with every step because walking sent shooting pains down my left leg. I am very very grumpy tonight Blush. This is because I ran to answer the phone earlier and a tiny bit of pee came out (not enough to have a wet patch, but enough to make my pants smell of wee). Blush Blush Have not unclenched since. And squeeeeeze!

jaggythistle · 07/12/2011 21:13

I am getting a bit nervous about my pelvic floor too I have a cough just now and that and vigorous laughing make me a bit worried about escapage.

dreamfeeder · 07/12/2011 22:07

well, there's no definites too, but some stats are:
After 26 weeks the rate of survival increases at slower rate because the survival rate is high already. The Mayo Clinic says that by 28 to 30 weeks, the risk of serious complications is much lower. And for babies born between 32 and 35 weeks, most medical problems are short term and may even have resolved by the time the baby comes home from the hospital.

Survival rate
26 weeks 80-90 percent
27 weeks 90 percent
30 weeks 95 percent
34 weeks 98 percent
Source: The University of Wisconsin

There were some stats on the Tommy's website, but they were more depressing so I'm not putting them on here!!!

I see mostly school age children, but have been out to assess ex-28 week identical twins at age 18 months with some queries over mild increased tone ??cerebral palsy with one of them- both were absolutely fine IMO and I discharged the one who'd been referred pretty quickly. For their corrected age they were bang on target developmentally, and seemed bright little buttons. My dh met ex-27 week 3 year old twin boys who had no developmental problems this week. A big one for me is 28 weeks. Or certainly more like 26-27.

And absolutely biscuits a 24 week baby is viable and would be treated! They do try with some 23 weekers, but survival is very, very low.

Blimey, I'm a bit morbid on here tonight, sorry!!!!. Have had a slightly depressing day seeing my typical- nice kids with some problems with parents who don't give a monkeys and don't want to do anything you advise or anything to help their child. I saw one pg mum, who openly said (her dd nearly 4 who I was visiting) that she wasn't planned, and neither was the one she's having in May! Shock. I'm not even shocked she thinks it, more that her dd hears it. Sad

OP posts:
dreamfeeder · 07/12/2011 22:13

took me so long writing that I missed loads!! biscuits, I find it best to often ignore my dh Smile. Unless he says something I want to hear.

HOT OFF THE PRESS!!! My dd has gone to sleep, in her cot by herself tobnight Grin Grin Grin.

I think it's only just sunk in she has!!!!!! Plus dh finally listened to her chest, not bronchiolitis again, just a cough. I am going to cheer myself up with that lovely, lovely knowledge (not that she deosn't need toddler taming, bossy little madam!!)

too, I am stuffing quality street in my gob and not thinking about junk foods and babies getting tastes for it and having an unhealthy lifestyle themselves. Ironic, as not pg I am a healthy eater, and was in my last pg!!! lets just say there's nothing in it lalalalalala

OP posts:
dreamfeeder · 07/12/2011 22:14

and too, 24 weeks still a milestone for me!

having a little chuckle at the pelvic floor chat

Biscuitsandtea · 08/12/2011 05:46

Yay for dd going to sleep by herself Dream Grin

Hope she stayed that way over night and a good night's sleep was had by all.

It sounds as though she's on the mend over all too if there is nothing untoward going on in her chest Smile

TooImmature2BDumbledore · 08/12/2011 13:16

Scan update: Bean has a multicystic dysplastic kidney, which is basically a kidney which didn't develop properly and has little or no function. As the other kidney is completely normal, she will probably be absolutely fine and won't need any medical intervention at birth. The paedeatrician will assess her kidney function (maybe scan her kidneys when she's a week or two old) but the chances are she won't need anything more than a little monitoring to make sure the other kidney continues to operate normally. She'll have to be careful with urinary infections and so on, but won't need regular medication or anything.

Her growth is fine - abdominal circumference on the middle of the growth chart, head a bit smaller, but I have a small head so I'm not too worried about that yet. It's probably around the 25th or 30th centile - I wonder if it says for certain in my notes? Ignores fact that DH has a big head and DD1's was on 90th centile

TheLittleFriend · 08/12/2011 13:25

Glad to hear your dd shouldn't be affected by the condition too, you sound really positive which is great Xmas Smile

scarletfingernail · 08/12/2011 13:28

Dumbledore I want to say that it sounds like good news, it sounds as though it is? Obviously it's not the best news, but as far as problems go it sounds very positive in terms that she hopefully won't need any surgery or medication? Good news about the growth. Don't worry about the head size, I don't think it can be measured accurately anyway and 25th-30th centile is still within average anyway.

How are you feeling about what you've found out today?

dreamfeeder · 08/12/2011 13:35

One of my cleverest friends who's a paediatrician, mother of two under 3 and doing an open university course has a tiny head!!!! Lovely she won't need regular meds and it won't affect her function or physically. Hope you're feeling ok about it, and glad it was nothing more sinister. Hope you feel on now too xxx

OP posts:
Biscuitsandtea · 08/12/2011 13:43

too that sounds like reasonably positive news, iyswim? I mean the fact that it doesn't require treatment just monitoring etc? How do you feel about it all?

A friend of mine had a kidney taken out at about 16 but it had never worked properly so may have been something similar - I guess they couldn't pick these things up in our day and it just never caused her any probs until se was 16? But she has not really had any trouble with it whatsoever since - Just has to be careful not to drink spirits, or not too many.

I think on the size thing, as others have said, they can never reliably measure these things and even 25-30 centile is pretty near average. We'll do some brooking for good growth!

What happens now? Do you have the next scan etc booked? Do you need any more?

MW was fine this morning. Think bp was ok, heard heartbeat etc. next appt in 4 weeks for the 28 week bloods to check iron etc. and that's the 5 Jan so seems quite soon when you've got Christmas etc to fill the time Smile

pommedenoel · 08/12/2011 14:18

Too - I'm glad that bean is doing well and that the kidney thing sounds something that shouldn't bother her too much. Sounds very much like both the doctors and you are feeling positive about it so that's good. Look after yourself. As for the growth thing dd2 is tiny and dd1 was big and so far I have been reassured by docs that as she is 10th percentile she is within average and is fine. It's hard not to panic but consultant said to me as long as you're feeling good movement all will be fine.

Dream - I think timescales are starting to look smaller suddenly now as the next few weekends are so busy. Next week it will only be 11 weeks until induction for me - that suddenly doesn't sound very long!!!

drfishcakefoxtrot · 08/12/2011 15:02

Hello, sorry for being absent for the last few days. I had my viva and I passed with only very minor corrections! So i really have pretty much finished my PhD! I thought this day would never come. I am so relieved that it is done. I think I have dreaded my viva since before I even officially started my PhD and I can't believe it has happened Grin
Please excuse my name change- I can't really use the Dr until after graduation but I thought I would have a day or so of it here. Don't expect any useful info from me though, I am definitely not that sort of Dr!

Too I am so glad to hear the scan was ok- is the sort of thing that lots of people might have and never know about because we were pre-decent scan babies? I was worried you might not be able to make it (you are Edinburgh way aren't you?). In this side of Scotland the weather is wild, schools are closed, DH's work sent everyone home, University closed. I was meant to be going to Edinburgh but had to cancel as I feared i would not get home. Given the travel warnings I think I was right! Am eating mince pies on the sofa and catching up with mumsnet. DH is actually working, conscientious man that he is.

Hope everyone else is doing ok. I am ok, quite looking forward to my follow up scan in a week or so. I am knackered though- the viva worry and prep was exhausting and then I was up till 12.30 last night catching up on marking. Did sneak in a wee nap earlier though, thanks to hurricane bawbag!

jaggythistle · 08/12/2011 15:28

Hi All.

Scan done, Babyjaggy2 is looking fine, seems to be the right size etc. Was nice to get another wee look. DS seemed to enjoy it and sat nicely on Daddy's knee. He then got so excited at the end he was given his own wee picture to take home Grin

Glad the scan went ok for you too too and baby should be ok with out medication etc.

It's bloody windy here, my very neglected mini greenhouse is now completely naked, as the cover is in shreds. Was fun trying to get DS in the car after the scan withough him blowing away! I think it is an awful lot worse south and west of here though.

Grin at hurricane bawbag drfishcake and glad you all but finished the PhD - well done :)

drfishcakefoxtrot · 08/12/2011 15:33

Glad babyjaggy2 is looking good. How sweet that your DS was so excited, and lovely that he was given his own picture!

jaggythistle · 08/12/2011 15:36

It is a very small world here - I was chatting away with the sonographer and it turns out I work with her BIL! She was very nice to DS.

He was in very cute and charming mode and didn't run about at all.

TooImmature2BDumbledore · 08/12/2011 16:01

Glad to hear all is well with babyjaggy2!

Congratulations, DrFishcake! Xmas Grin

I have calmed down a bit now - was totally freaked out to begin with. Still, the consultant was so calm - she clearly didn't think it was anything at all to worry about, and, in fact, dismissed it as unimportant until we started questioning her. I think I had convinced myself that it was all going to have disappeared so it was quite a shock to hear that it hadn't and that it wasn't going to, either. Still, it isn't the worst thing to have - as Fishcake says, lots of people will have this and not know because scan technology wasn't as advanced when they were in utero.

It's just as well the appt was at 9 or we might not have got there! DH got sent home at half past 2, and my office is closed because the windows kept blowing in (v badly maintained 7 storey block - windows blow in all the time, so what it's like now I shudder to think!) and the fire alarm kept going off. We had another staff email saying that people were to stay at work rather than try to travel between 3 and 6 - good thing most people had gone by then!

Biscuits, yay for a good MW appt! My next scan is 5 Jan, so same day as your next MW appt. I think you're just a couple of days ahead of me (I'm 23+6). I'll have scans every 4 weeks, but that's as precaution about growth, not because of the kidney.

JenFestive · 08/12/2011 16:15

Glad to hear your scan went well Jaggy and although the news wasn't quite what you wanted too, it's still positive.

Congratulations DrFishcake. We won't tell on you for using it early, you need to get used to it before it is official anyway.

The first week of Jan is looking busy for us. Hawthers will have a lovely new baby to play with, we have a run of scans 1 day after another and Biscuits has another mw appointment. There is probably something else I've forgotten but I blame Spud for that

GenericDietCola · 08/12/2011 16:41

Too I'm glad your scan is done and you're feeling OK about it. As everyone has said, it sounds like the kidney deficiency will be manageable. And re growth - my sister has two boys and one was always teeny and the other is at the top end of the scale, so I wouldn't read too much into the estimated head circumference. Be kind to yourself the rest of the day and a big yay that you will be getting to 24 weeks tomorrow!

Jaggy great news for you too! And lovely to hear how interested your DS was. Is he about the same age as my DD (2.3)?

And well done DrFishcake - wow! Great achievement!

Biscuits glad your appt went well too - what a good day for the brookers all round!

My booking in appt is 5 Jan too, although I know nothing much will happen at that, although I should be told my scan date - whoop!

ScarletFestiveFingernail · 08/12/2011 17:14

Congrats on finishing your PhD DrFishcake Grin you must be elated.

jaggy great news re your scan. Do we have another unidentified brooking bean?

Glad you're feeling nice and calm Dumbledore You have definitely had more heartache than anyone should ever have to have, here's to the rest of your pregnancy being completely uneventful.

Finally thought of a seasonal namechange, I'm not entirely happy with it as it seems a bit boring but it's all I could come up with for now. In other news Smokey The Fire Engine arrived today. Phew. £60 with free delivery from Hamleys in the end. Only ordered it on Monday so I'm pretty chuffed.

Wants3 · 08/12/2011 17:47

too my scan is also on the 5th Jan so it is going to be a busy day!

jaggythistle · 08/12/2011 19:46

yup another ubb :)

DS must be almost exactly the same age generic as he's 2.2 and a bit. :)

he has spent part of the evening listening to my tummy again and also attempted to feed my tummy button a biscuit. Hmm

is it just musical that we haven't had scan news from? or am i mixed up Confused

Biscuitsandtea · 08/12/2011 19:47

Tired.

But wanted to say yay for good scan Jaggy, and Wowsers and congrats to DrFishcake, And I've forgotten everything else.

Tired.

JenFestive · 08/12/2011 19:50

Scarlet your name change is similar to mine, I've had it for about a week now I think but nobody noticed it :(
