Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Super-seal [hgrin] Good question Oi I wonder where it all went? Reabsorption perhaps [hhmm] Have to say that it just sounded like a bonus to me; the hormones from placenta are supposed to help increase milk production & reduce the risk of PND which is why I'm considering consuming mine. I just wish they looked more appealing [bleurgh]

mopsytop · 27/10/2011 15:15

Don't think I could. Feel sick at the thought. Think will stick to maternity pads!!!!

HoneyLovesCake · 27/10/2011 15:23

Definitely don't think I could fry it up with onions & have it for dinner but I think once it's in capsules I'll be fine. I wonder if my local chinese herbalist would do it for me [hhmm] I'm a veggie so not used to handling meat even...have a feeling I'll take one look at it & be too grossed out to touch it. Suppose I should put it in my birth plan just in case.

fusam · 27/10/2011 15:34

honey you look lovely in your pictures and your cupcakes look divine. Is that what you do for a living? If not, you should!! What is encapsulation?

cheep feel better soon.

I went in for monitoring yesterday but discharged myself before seeing a doctor after the monitoring bit in the evening. There were women labouring in ambulances outside and on stretchers as the ward was full. Maternity services in London seem to be creaking at the seams.

OiMissus · 27/10/2011 15:37

Hugh Fearnley-Whatsit-Arbuthnot made a very nice looking liver pate with one once on the TV. I always thought it a good idea. I am the opposite - a complete carnivore. But I'm too darned lazy to go to the trouble of collecting it and then preparing anything with it. And I'd gross out everyone around me.
I'll stick to some Foie Gras at Christmas to satisfy my murderous blood lust.

OiMissus · 27/10/2011 15:42

You ok fusam - did you go in because of the loss of plug bits? Did the monitoring give you any answers?

KateM77 · 27/10/2011 15:54

34 week MW appointment this morning, and all is well. Urine, BP and blood count are all fine, bump measured 34cm and baby is head down Grin

I've spent the first day of mat leave with my feet up, but sadly not for the reasons I'd like. DD has a fever and just wants to be cuddled and sleep. Poor little thing is really poorly and whilst I'm getting lots of extra cuddles and TV time, it's so horrible to see her unwell.

Haven't been able to get anything done all day other than seeing MW. DH has just gone to get his Dad from the station and I've done nothing to prepare for his visit, so DH will have to do it all. He's been really good so far today, fetching me food and drinks because DD cries the place down if I'm not cuddling her. Very lucky DH had the day off today!

fusam · 27/10/2011 15:57

Yeah was also having fairly painful BH but it's not escalating nor is it regular. I just decided to see what happens over the next few days by taking it easy. Baby's heartrate and movement still ok so hopefully it will cook for a bit longer.

HoneyLovesCake · 27/10/2011 15:57

Thank you fusam I wish I baked for a living I find it so calming but it's just a hobby. Really looking forward to kids birthday parties though...when DP & I first started talking about having kids I went straight to Amazon & bought a book on fertility & one on children's birthday cakes [hgrin] Hope the monitoring went ok...not just London that's overstretched unfortunately; it's the same down here [hsad] Encapsulation is basically just drying it, grinding it up & putting into capsules, some people steam it before drying.

Oi It would be kind of hilarious evil to make pate out of placenta & serve it to unsuspecting family members...ewww!

fusam · 27/10/2011 16:04

You guys are making me giggle at the idea of a placenta side dish during Xmas dinner.

kate enjoy ML, hope poor DD feels better.

OiMissus · 27/10/2011 16:18

They had a placenta party! All the local lentil-weavers came. [hwink]
Could a vegetarian take part? I 'spose so, because the mum didn't die to create it...
Oh I might send invitations to a placenta party to DH's family. They'll think I'm serious, and completely mad, oh they'd talk about it for weeks! They'd be so grossed out.
But I like the pate/side dish idea... maybe I'll make some homemade stuffing, and give it to everyone as presents for Christmas and tell them after they've eaten it that it contained my placenta. Now that would be funny.

msbuggywinkle · 27/10/2011 16:32

She bled normally for the six hours, then hasn't had a period since (baby is 9mths old). I have heard other stories of eating placenta stopping bleeding quickly, but usually in the case of a hemorrhage where the bleeding has returned to normal. I'd probably only do it if I was hemorrhaging, I'm not a fan of offal! Lochia for me only lasts up to a week, but up to 6 weeks is considered normal.

honey a vegan friend ate her placenta, her argument was that she consented!

plupervert · 27/10/2011 16:45

Hi, all

fusam and cheep, keep those babies baking! We need nice warm babies in the proper cold weather!

Please, everyone, do be careful with all the house-moves; my back and pelvis were in a dire state for ages after ours, and that was even with me being supposedly "careful".

mopsytop · 27/10/2011 17:04

I second that plu, I could barely move after I moved my stuff home there in August, it really affected my pelvic girdle pain. I was practically immobile for a few days. So be very careful!

aethelfleda · 27/10/2011 20:06

There is no way that eating a placenta (or eating anything) could possibly stop bleeding that fast- even taking tranexamic acid (used for stopping/relieving heavy periods) doesn't work that fast. I suspect she just had a stonking breastfeeding reflex (breastfeeding clamps down the uterus faster and so could stop the lochia bleeding a little faster in theory). Some women don't get periods at all when they breastfeed, other women drop one feed and then start ovulating again (so don't rely on BFing for your contraception, laydeez!)

Real nappy wise, I cloth bottomed my DDs (and for a "glorious" 6 months had two in nappies at once!) we used motherease birth to potty nappies alongside tots bots and many others: with no drier, I found 24 nappies worked very well: you use about 8 in 24 hours, wash every second day, and then on day 3 you use the spare eight while the other 16 are drying. Pm me if you want any info about cloth, we found that while some other types dry quicker then Motherease and Tots bots, it's having good absorbancy and good leakproofness that wins out over quick drying time. If you already have b-t-p nappies it may be worth trying a few size 1 little lambs/totsbots from Clothnappytree (preloved nappy forum) as they are dinky for newborns until they fit the onesize nappies, and are fairly cheap to pick up from there.

I am feeling a lot better after 10 hours sleep last night: need to cut myself se slack and stop trying to do so much! (I have No idea how you girls are managing to move house, it's all I can do to tidy the lounge!)

Ooh, and mat leave starts at 36.5 weeks for me despite DD2 being term+7: I'm going to be totally ready to stop then, and can't reduce my workload even a little, so it's better to stop then for me.

sevensevenseven · 27/10/2011 21:07

Hope everyone has had a good day, no way could I eat placenta, even liver grosses me out!

Street collection went well, I done 4 hours and raised nearly £90. I'm not appreciating the effects of gravity though, after standing all day the pelvic pressure is actually painful tonight. I keep holding my crotch when I move and DH is starting to look rather worried! :o

aethelfleda · 27/10/2011 21:13

ooh, well done seven, great job! Hope your delicate parts become less - erm- delicate - very soon!

plupervert · 27/10/2011 21:24

Oh, seven, go to bed, or sit in a bath! That really is a long time to be on your feet. (well done on what you raised, but.... really!)

Rather jealous of these people whose lochia just stops. Mine went on for a good five weeks last time, and then I got my periods back at about 5 months (even before we started weaning!), despite breastfeeding for 12/13 months. It must be my womanly figure - no amenorrh?afor me! Hmm

LittleMissFlustered · 27/10/2011 21:40

Brace yourselves...

I have central heating

[hgrin]

sevensevenseven · 27/10/2011 21:42

Thanks, I'm laying on the sofa under a duvet watching Love Actually with a tin of Quality Street.

sevensevenseven · 27/10/2011 21:45

Brilliant news LMF, so far ours has only been on twice this winter, this house is so much warmer than our old flat.

OiMissus · 27/10/2011 22:02

Congratulations lmf and seven!
Bedtime fr me now. Tummy and legs have doubled in size today. Sad rubbish. Will mn work from home tomorrow.

plupervert · 27/10/2011 22:10

Ah, how lovely, LittleMissFlustered! You will soon be LittleMissWarmAndToasty!

AheadlesswomancalledHorse · 27/10/2011 22:34

Thanks for the nappy info! DH was a bit Hmm at the whole reuseables thing, thought we'd need 30-50-ish to keep up with baby poop.

Well done seven! Bit jealous of your Quality Street, must send DH out to get something snack-y for me tomorrow (as I've got three parcels to wait in for, one being a maternity jacket, woohoo)!
Our windows are still open!! Is it massively cold where you are LMF and everyone else?

LittleMissFlustered · 27/10/2011 22:41

Not massively cold, but it's a 1950s council house with a large portion of 'end' and until today no central hearing at all. We've had a few bitter nights this year, and the last couple of winters have been awful with nothing but a gas fire in the living room. We can now keep the place temperate, which is going to be a luxury! Not looking forward to the bills though, but we can adjust our budget and hopefully cope:)

Hope everyone enjoys their rest and treats. My ankles feel swollen today, so I'm in bed resting up for the cleanup tomorrow. Got to love that bit of any major works.
