Hello everyone! Aw, wonderful news about the new babies. Congratulations! Those of you who are still yet to give birth, hope you are enjoying your hours, days, weeks.
I've got about five minutes between running around trying to get things done (BB3 - how do you do it? You're amazing.) so I thought I'd tell you a bit about the birth and how we've been doing so far.
My waters broke just after 7am on my due date which I thought was quite funny, even at the time. Called the labour ward, was told to go to the MAU to get checked and there they monitored me and found a couple of drops on baby's heartbeat chart and asked me to go get my stuff from home and go to the labour ward. Which we did, and an hour later, as we were on our way, my contractions had started (quite far apart at that stage so very manageable). The manageable bit lasted up until about 3pm when I started having the proper one - it only took one walk down a flight of stairs (at the doctor's advice) for me to get to that point. Which was good but MY GOD it was also a shock. I was checked for the first time an hour later and was found to be 6cm dilated to the complete surprise of the midwives which started running around trying to get us a labour room ready. By the time they did I could hardly walk the 10 steps there! That was about 5pm and until then I'd only used my TENS machine for about 10 minutes (as I started on it way too late being the noob that I am) and a little bit of gas and air which wasn't really doing much for me, apart from keeping me focused on the breathing. Once in the labour room it was all low lighting, bean bags, birthing balls and that weird round seat, on which I gave birth with my hero of DH holding me, two amazing midwives spurring me on and no pain relief whatsoever because, well, I guess they believed in me and the baby/it was all happening too fast/they enjoyed my screaming. Seriously, I'd no idea I could scream so loudly...
Our daughter entered the world at 7:08pm, with a head full of hair and big cheeks and looking completely lovely. I only got a first degree tear and a few grazes, so didn't feel too wobbly or anything.
So it's all been fine and we are over the moon, apart from breastfeeding. She's really struggling and as a result I'm struggling too. She seems to be one of those Excited Ineffective babies who can't latch on easily because they get too excited, then frustrated, then proper upset. It's really really hard. My midwife is helping a lot but I think we'll need professional help from a specialist. I just wished I had the confidence to go see someone or go to a breastfeeding cafe round here because God knows we need it. But I'm finding it all a bit overwhelming right now...
Still completely in love with motherhood and our little wonder, and completely in awe of DH who's been truly truly amazing.
