just out of interest, has everyone decided when they are going on maternity leave yet? How many weeks before your due date are most of you leaving work?

I am thinking pre-Chrsitmas would be nice, that way I won't need to save any of my annual leave for the Christmas period to man the office for a day or two.

But that would mean starting Mat leave 5 weeks before due date? which seems a bit much, esp since I was 2 weeks overdue last time...

fishandlilacs · 16/09/2011 10:00

Hiya all,

I'm not bothering oing count the kicks-I haven't been given a pocket thingy, luckily I haven't had any cause for concern in that department. I'm glad that Abi is all good now Oiesha it can be terribly hard to stop yourself from thinking the worst when they go quiet.

Redhead-has your bleeding stopped? if not call your midwife.

giraffe I also have a GTT booked at some point-yuk, i have hated lucozade ever since the first one with DD. I really hope I haven't got Gestational diabetes, I didn't get it last time so i am hoping it will be the same. It seems like the GTT is really late in pregnancy to me-anyone know why that is?

I need to se my midwife soon I think, I have no idea, i'm pretty sure it says 26 weeks on my green form for the next appointment.

makescakes recipe please-choc cola sounds divine.

Anyone got a suggestion as to what to do with some fairly gnarly pears that my neighbour insisted on giving me. They aren't particulary good, hard and un ripe one minute then rotten the next. They have very rough pitted skin so aren't nice unless peeled and sliced. Be good for cooking with but I have an entire carrier bag full. The cake recipe I normally use for date and pear cake only uses 2 pears. I'm thinking of stewing them and bunging them in the freezer tbh. I can't be faffed with jam making or anything else right now.

Mind you I may stew some now in the hope that it will get me "moving" I've not crapped for 3 days and I'm feeling like it :( Sorry TMI.

The first of my new contracts starts this afternoon. This is just learning support work so nice and easy, just gotta sit there help someone fill in forms, make some tea and do a bit of art probably. As well as chat to them and make them feel comfortable. Nice work.

Fryn · 16/09/2011 10:05

Morning all!

Well, got through yoga without any embarrassing parping - although all hell broke lose when I got home! Grin

red I love the name James for a boy, but my DH doesn't for some inexplicable reason. Fool! Gosh, the combination of naughty boy + violin doesn't sound too appealing. Much along the lines of 2 year old with recorder... Although I'm thinking of digging out my trombone and getting DD started on that when she's big enough to hold it! I'm sure the neighbours will enjoy every second of that.

fish and oiesha - I'm a bit jealous of your marathon running babies. G2 seems to poke the odd toe out, but that's it at the moment. Although I know as soon as start getting the full blown kicks and punches I'll be less delighted.

shonno - poor you! It's when I hear stories like that that it makes me drop all thoughts of becoming a teacher (very small niggling thought in back of mind purely for the holidays!) I'm just not sure I really like other peoples' children!!

makescakes - go on, taste the cake! Put us out of our misery!

giraffe - lucozade makes me want to barf at the best of times, let alone with morning sickness and an empty stomach. Good luck with it!

Oeisha · 16/09/2011 10:08

fish prune juice and allbran (not together. The grimness would make me apass out). Mix about 1/4 of a glass of juice in with some smoothies (pear??). Them just sprinkle a small hand full off allbran on something - usually cereal, but I guess you do it on anything...or maybe ust blend it into the smoothie, the stuff disintergrates like cardboard anyway...that should do it.

Fryn · 16/09/2011 10:13

Crikey - I took so long writing my post another 5 had appeared in the meantime!

fish - stewing sounds like the best option. That or just post them back through your neighbour's door. I know what you mean about the, er, bungedupness. I'm really struggling with it at the moment, hence my dates and prune fest yesterday. If the pears work, let me know!

mia I'm not due until 29th, so I'll waddle in for the first two weeks of January. I'm also leaving it so late as I don't want to come back to work and have to go straight away for a week in October (big bookfair), and I have to come back within 9 months to get the maternity return bonus. I'm stuffed if this baby comes early!

GiraffeAHolic · 16/09/2011 10:15

Forgot to ask my weird question.

MW yesterday was doing paperwork and said 'your blood type is A positive, but I'm sure you knew that.'

At the same time the other MW was doing the heartbeat so i wasn't really paying attention and I didn't think about it until later and realised that doesn't make sense.

My labour notes from Dd say that my blood group is AB positive.

That can't be right can it?

SlightlyScrambled · 16/09/2011 10:39

Hi everybody.
I'm a bit hit and miss with getting time on the internet these days. I had my 20 week scan 2 weeks ago and chose not to find out about the sex of the baby. Everything else was great in the scan.

I don't know if I'll be diligent or organised enough to count and write down the kicks. Baby has been much more active than DD1 was and DH has been able to feel them too since week 19. I'm going to have a look at the link Oeisha posted though.

Fish - I find apples are great for fibre and help keep my constipation at bay. Ah, the things we have to endure...

Oeisha · 16/09/2011 11:40

Giraffe Nope, you can't have 2 different types of blood...unless you're an ALIEN...are you? Your blood type SHOULD be somewhere as an official printout in your notes - mine's in with all the other bloodworks they took at booking (mine's an a4 green booklet with a page with a row of stickies on it that you tear off and stick pages to). Says "Blood Transfusion" on it, it's purple and says:
"Patient's blood group: A RHESUS POSITIVE Antibody screen: Negative"...
Check that it is your details on this paper, and if in doubt, go to your GP and ge tthem to re-take the bloods.

Fryn hehe, it is nice that Abi's back to her usual nerfing self. She bashing about as I type. Haven't worn these jeans and bump band for a while, so she's probably not linking it (yes, it's taken me 'til 11 to get showered & changedHmm, did clean the bathroom though...). I'm going through a phase of loving them, though I'm sure what will wear off when she starts up at 4am again.
Apparently my BIL was all active like this. I'm now worried as he was climbing cliff faces and scaffolding at about 18mths...(literally, all the way to the roof/a good 20ft up the cliff)...this LO's gonna be in reigns and on a retractable dog lead thingy as soon as she can crawl...

Fryn · 16/09/2011 11:42

scrambled yay for another team yellow!

giraffe - well, it seems unlikely that your blood group's changed (cue Torchwood comment, but I suspect I'm the only saddo who sat through all 13 weeks of that...) so it's definitely something to speak to your MW about again. That's probably one of the most important things for them to have right on the day!

Fryn · 16/09/2011 11:43

oiesha another x post! And hell, yeah, I'm all for restraints!

abeautifulbutterfly · 16/09/2011 12:56

Fryn/Giraffe, don't know about Torchwood but the only time I know blood group can change is if it was A- at birth apparently it can change to A+ later in life. Don't know why/how or even if that's true, but my DD1 was born with A- and the MW said that she should get it checked at latest if she ever gets pg because A- can change to A+. Whether that's true of other -/+ or only A I don't know.

greenlady78 · 16/09/2011 16:19

mia sorry to hear about your stressful time with the consultant Sad hugs and hope you can find a way to relax and also a solution that will make you happy!

Hypnobirthing - a friend gave me a book and cd and the cd always makes me so relaxed I end up sleeping!!! Is that wrong?

red congrats on scan and welcome to team blue Grin now onto finding namesssss... I am finding quite hard Confused

I went to my first yoga glass last week with a new teacher and what did I get? A groin sprain....hurraahhh!!!!! That was on Saturday and it does not seem to be getting better, which is slowly freaking me out and actually really worrying me....anyone know what is good for a sprained groin? I read it can take up to 6 weeks to hear a Grade I sprain (which is I belive what I have, it hurts sometimes when I am walking and when I stand up sometimes....feel so angry at myself for straining myself for no bloody reason!!!!!!! Ahhhhhh)

Hope everyone is well and enjoying the sunshine! Yes, I should be outside but instead have my leg up (hoping the sprain will go away for my class tomorrow) in my bedroom in pjs....

xxxx

miamama09 · 16/09/2011 16:51

sunshine? p1ssing it down here! lol

no tips on the groin sprain unfortunately, I'm sure another yoga loving yummy mummy will be along soon to offer some words of wisdom! Hope it gets better soon!

Moobee · 16/09/2011 17:02

Hello from Geneva! Glad to hear your baby is behaving Oeisha. Counting the kicks sounds really important. I don't think Apple (my bump) moves enough yet for formal counting. Having said that, there's activity in the morning, at about 2pm and just before I got to bed usually.

Trying not to worry too much as I have only felt a couple of taps today. I think I'm worried about things going wrong while I'm away from home. I've been walking lots whereas usually I'm stuck at my desk so it's not exactly my normal situation.

shon I hope today was better at work, Mars bars sound a good solution to a bad day at work. I've asked my husband (who's flying out to meet me tonight) to bring some Wispas in his case for me. :)

giraffe I have to book my glucose test too - I hate lucozade and drinks like that, I'm really not looking forward to it.

Someone asked about maternity leave. I'm planning to finish Dec 5th so a month before my due date of 8th Jan. I have to walk to the train station and have a short train commute, but I'm worried about ice and snow etc. My husband and I are probably going to share the maternity leave - I'll have nine months and then he can have three. I'll be using annual leave until Jan 3rd as we have Christmas off automatically, but if baby comes before then, those 'extra' days are just part of my maternity leave, so I'd lose almost two weeks.

Moobee · 16/09/2011 17:04

Whoops, pressed send too soon, hope everyone has a good weekend!

Moobee · 16/09/2011 17:18

Ha, and after saying I'd not had many kicks, I've been lying on my bed and just felt several wallops - big enough to lift my hand. :) so cool!

GiraffeAHolic · 16/09/2011 17:24

Damn my secret alien identity has been revealed Grin

It is slightly concerning though, especially if my old notes are incorrect as I almost had a transfusion after labour (had canuler in ready etc) then my iron level rose a bit. That would not have been good at all.

I'm Envy of wherever you are that has sunshine, it's horrible here.

fishandlilacs · 16/09/2011 19:26

Hello all,

Nice to hear from you moobee I like the idea of you and your hubby sharing maternity-that set up would not work for us as DH is the only one working right now. I like the idea very much though-gives the fellas an appreciation of what us mums do and helps them be daddy. Nice kicks there Apple :)

greenlady I know nothing of groin starin but PLEASE be careful and don't go back to yoga unless it's better. Remember the old anacronym "R.I.C.E" Rest Ice compression elevation
Good for ankles-dunno if you want cold packs betwist your thighs though. :)

giraffe i'd chase up that blood group thing, sounds quite dodgy that they may have it wrong. Not all blood types mix can they?

Well the first of my new contracts started today-sadly no -one turned up for the class. The tutor and I sat having a cuppa in a community hall that was like the bloddy marie celeste. They have another week to get people on it and if not it will not run-no bad thing in terms of work load and time, It's a bit of a pain schlepping down the bypass for half an hour and getting stuck in the friday traffic on the way home, but very bad thing in terms of the old cash flow :(

Jago has finally calmed his activity down, the little monkey, he's still kicking but thankfully not the marathon grooving fest of the last 24 hours. If thats what I get for listening to grandmaster flash when i'm doing the washing up, then I better put on some mozart or whale music and calm the boy.

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 16/09/2011 20:49

Green lady , it can take longer to heal when you're pregnant cos the body directs most of it's energy towards growing a new person. Try not to worry too much.

The cake was delicious, especially with a ganache icing. Yum. Yes, the cola basically helps it to be nice and most. It was quite a dense, moist texture, a little like a sacher torte, but much cheaper because not full of ground almonds, and made out of store cupboard ingredients. Useful when you want chocolate but there's none in the house! Will post the recipe once i'm home again.

Gah, after a foul evening yesterday i'm feeling much better today, just a bit snotty still and very tired, but at least all the pain has gone. Hope you're all well, xx

ParsleyLion1 · 16/09/2011 21:12

greenlady it sounds similar to something I did that was made worse by the PGP. However after a couple of sessions of physio this week I feel like a new woman today :)

Because our ligaments are softer the muscles overcompensate and strain easier. You need to be careful how to sit up and down, stand up in a straight alignment (rather than stepping to the side) and engage your pelvic floor before you stand and again when you take the first step. Basically if a movement hurts change it to something straight and then engage the pelvic floor before making the movement. It is working for me so far.

I'm not allowed to do exercise that rotates the hips or transfers weight from one leg to the other (e.g. standing up spin) but otherwise everything else is OK.

fishandlilacs · 16/09/2011 21:44

Oh my goodness.

i have just seen my amusing typo in the above post-i'm terrible for typos, I type too fast for my own fingers.

"I know nothing of groin starin"

hahahahahhaa

I really don't go round staring at groins...no honestly I don't Grin

shonnomanom · 16/09/2011 21:51

parsley thats great that the physio has been working for you. Keep up the good work x

Today was a much better day at work, thank you. Its helps that my 3 hour day was only 45mins. Gotta love it when the parents finish early on a Friday! Said child did give me a written apology, she never said anything but did give me half a hug before I left.

Mat Leave - My EDD is 01/01 and im finishing 30/11. Im not taking the full 9 months so I dont mind taking that bit longer prior. Especially if this winter is anything like the last. BBBRRRRRRRRRRR!

Iv never heard of anyone changing blood type before. Well apart from on Torchwood - I really enjoyed the that series.

I think the rule of thumb when measuring bumps is the amount of weeks you are should equal to the amount of cm from top of bump to bottom. ie your notes should say at your 24wk check up that your measuring 24cm. But its not scientific in the slightest so cant be very accuarate. I dunno.

OP posts:
mummyzoe2012 · 16/09/2011 21:55

im going on mat leave on the 1st december as they are expecting me to work 12 hour shifts on xmas eve, xmas day, boxingday, new years eve, new years day so i have 11 more weeks at work and can not wait. Ame is due on 21st jan so its about 6 weeks before but im not going back after mat leave so it makes no diff to me. Ame is having very active days where she moves non stop all day and night.

Anyone else finding it realy hard to get comfy and getting a tight tummy feeling all the time?

ParsleyLion1 · 16/09/2011 21:57

Ha ha fish Grin

I only just spotted one before I posted. I nearly put groin stain.. Must be the word, can't be usWink

Moobee · 16/09/2011 22:29

I like that typo fish! :o

Zoe - it is getting more difficult to be comfy and definitely have a tight tummy sensation.
