Well, are we?

Has the sickness abated?
Are our locks shiny and luscious?
Are our nails long and strong?
Are we back on form in the 'ahem' bedroom?

No? Well we soon will be ladies it's The second Trimester*

Congratulations Esme! Fab news that you're having a boy. Very exciting, and a good excuse to buy a whole new load of baby clothes. Your little boy is going to be well mothered - my sister and I still mother our little brother and he's 24.

melliebobs · 13/09/2011 17:06

esme that's brilliant news! Yey for blue babies!!!

On the nappies front were braving it with re-usable. Got some TotsBots ones the other week. Watched some videos on the NappyLady website so understand it in theory. Got dh and myself to had a practice on my Zippy teddy and it's a doddle even with a dog who was Very interested in what was going on! Will be a different kettle o fish once there's a wriggly baby involved!!!! Lol

TheWicketKeeperIsDown · 13/09/2011 18:41

Puke puke puke today. Seriously Sad
I've puked my cyclizine up twice.

Thank God I never have to go through this again - 2 kids is our lot, and even if I'd wondered about a third, a second really sick pregnancy would have put paid to that.

Bloody 17+2 and still at it. SadSadSad

Xavielli · 13/09/2011 20:12

Congrats Esme!! How exciting! Grin

So sorry you're still having a rubbish time wicket :(

FundusCrispyPancake · 13/09/2011 20:35

Pam, Monkey and Sugar, I have no idea about looking after babies either, DH also hasn't a clue. I'm a bit panicked about it so I've been cornering friends and work colleagues who have children and interrogating them.

Wicket, I am also still puking. Sad Thought I would be frisky and glowing by now, dammit!

woowa · 13/09/2011 21:40

nappy changing advice: get some terry towels or muslins or small old towels or something to put on top of the changing mat. Babies wee and poo unpredicatbly at first and if they wee on the mat it will run all over the plaace and you'll end up with a ful chnage of clothes and mopping the floor if there is nothing absorbent on the mat!

Slings: i have a hoppediz wrap for the front and ergobaby for the back (as I cannot get the hang of tying a wrap on the back!) They are great if you need to get on a bus a lot, or have a small car and don't always want to be cramming the pushchair in, or if you just like wearing your baby! I would love to fathom how to bf in it this time if anyone can advise on that?! I had to stop when DD was about 9 months because our combined weight was too much for my feet - i get plantas fasciitis when heavy :( lookinf forward to having a teeny thing to strap to front again, and hope DD doesn't mind.

We won't be finding out the sex (next week!) as I love the surprise. MIL has a stash of white newborn, 0-3 and 3-6 month clothes in her loft which make their way round new grandchildren, so i don't need to know for clothes, and baby will be in with us, then with DD so don't even need to decorate! And we'll be moving house anyway so basically, can't even think much about anyone's room. They only poo over everything anyway (sorry). DD's nappy used to leak everytime i put her in nice going out clothes.

Can't believe we're all pushing the halfway stage now. hooray!

ReadRideABikeSwim · 13/09/2011 21:41

Congratulations Esme- as a mum of a lot of lovely boys i always celebrate when people are pleased with a boy as i feel boys get poor press these days!

Wicket and Fundus - i am miles behind you two but 'is there something in the water?' today has been awful for me too - just about to have some soup - had a lovely sandwich and coleslaw at lunch which quelled the nausea but not for long ....ewwwww this is tiresome!!!

15+6

woowa · 13/09/2011 21:52

o, also on nappies. Buy cotton wool balls (not as cheap as a roll, but a bit less messy) and use plain water. Take child, take nappy off, wash bottom, put new nappy on. As someone said, front to back wiping (so germs from bum don't enter, erm, other bits). If you are using water not wipes (better for skin) even more important to have a towel under baby bottom to stop drips also going all over clothes.

On cloth nappies. We love them! Have totsbots flexitots, happy to recommend wildly.

And buy large stocks of metanium nappy cream. No-one has ever recommended sudocrem, EVERYONE recommends metanium. It's fab.

erm, that's all i know about rearing babies. Our NCT classes did nappy changing and bathing baby. I am SO glad they did the bath, i had no idea how to hold a baby. Basically, put one arm under babies neck and with that hand take hold of the farside armpit in a pincer grip. Then you are suporting head with your wrist and they can't slide off you, and you have a spare hand to wash them with. There's probably a youtube vid. Or you can buy bath supports, but that's one more bit of plastic in your loft as you won't need it for long.

any other questions newbies :) ?

woowa · 13/09/2011 21:55

I retched when i emptied the bin, retched when DH retched at a bad tomato, and wanted to be sick when chopping courgettes for dinner. (we'vegrown them this summer and I'm so sick of them, literally, in fact even typing this makes my stomach startto churn!) So maybe there is something in the water!

PamBeesly · 13/09/2011 22:01

Thanks everyone! Thanks woowa for the tips. I'm sure I'll be back asking again when I have more moments of panic.
Congraulations on the boy Esme how lovely, boys are so sweet
Congratulations Bill on the girl! How exciting.
I can't wait to find out, not until the 26th of October, I'll be 22 weeks 5 days then so I really hope bubs is in the right position to see

ReadRideABikeSwim · 13/09/2011 22:07

Bill sorry MANY congratulations on your girl - my third boy (much wanted girl!!) is the most adored child in our household and he is not the youngest by a long chalk!!

Sugarkane · 13/09/2011 22:28

Oh yes best recommendation I ever had was metanium its amazing works in a matter of hours even on really bad nappy rash, but you dont need it every change just when you notice baby is a bit red or sore.

When I had DD i knew nothing but trust me it just comes when you need it.

m1nn1em0u5e · 14/09/2011 09:05

Congratulations Bill & Esme!....

Metanium, fantastic stuff, I kind of stumbled across it in my local supermarket as sudocrem wasnt touching my teething babies nappy rash, omg it works almost immediately!....

Another recommendation for baby colic is COLIEF! That is magic, expensive, about £11 for a tiny bottle, but its worth every penny!....Infacol....I wouldn't bother!....

Off to the Midwife today for my 21 week check....over half way now!....Need to get organised!....:)

Hope all you sickly ladies are having a better day, im so relieved my Hyperemesis has eased off, its horrendous....

Better go & do some ironing, both dc at school now, cant get used to this quiet house!....Wont be for long I suppose! :)

TheWicketKeeperIsDown · 14/09/2011 11:34

Metanium is magic! But it does stain, so we tend to use Bepanthen if things aren't too bad - I love it, and would really recommend it.

Awake most of the night with nausea which the 4am cyclizine did nothing for. Spoke to midwife and GP today and now have some more Buccastem (had some left over from tonsillitis earlier in the year and took some yesterday evening - it stopped the vomiting for 4 hours only but didn't help the nausea much). It's helping more today but I haven't been able to eat anything yet. DD has been parked in front of the telly in her jammies and big girl pants that she has insisted on wearing today - great timing. I have rearranged my clinic tomorrow morning so I can take tomorrow off sick. Rest is the one thing that does help and will hopefully see me through as I'm working this weekend.

deardear · 14/09/2011 11:47

i am still struggling with nausea as well :( only had a tincy bit with other 2 pregnancies so this is a bit of a shock! anything sets it off. Even the thought of sweet and sour for tea tonight. strangely i am loving pickled red cabbage??

Cant wait for next scan. not got much of a bump yet which is disappointing but baby is moving about. am pretty excited about it all now as are the girls. stressing about maternity leave and the dates but need to sit down with a calendar and work it all out. my annual leave is from 1/9 to 31/8 and i will be off from mid january so no way am i going to get it all in so planning on taking 3 weeks annual leave before my maternity leave starts and hope they let me take it.

hope we all feel better soon.

littlemonkeybix · 14/09/2011 13:57

Aww sorry there's still some sickies in the house Sad

on a brighter note, I am going for my 16 week appointment now... just logging off from work, but will be coming back later. YAY!! Grin

littlemonkeybix · 14/09/2011 15:23

ooh, I'm back.... How much nicer was she Grin

This one (in my local surgery) gave me the book, a bunch of leaflets, and advice on the antenatal classes available in our area. I got a vitamin voucher, and she said she'll organise a bounty pack for me Grin Grin Grin

She talked to me about my fears of.... (shhhhh) tearing *runs away and hides with eyes shut and fingers in ears.....

Anyway.. so much for the snotty lump that booked me in - miserable sow!! I think I am tainting her with time too though... the more I realise what she never bothered to do/give and the fiasco with her changing my consultant cos I am fat (but not fat enough as I found out from the consultant himself!!!) the more I think she needs a slap!!

Right.... back to my beautiful spreadsheet - sob sob

diedandgonetodevon · 14/09/2011 15:45

Haven't posted for quite a while as I haven't had much to report, have been reading everyone elses updates though.

Have just come back from my some-what late 16wk appt. Heard the heart beat loud and clear. 2yo DS was quite fascinated by it all.

It's taken until nearly 19wks but can finally answer 'yes' to all the questions at the top of the thread. Phew!
Now roll on the 20wk scan

18+6

littlemonkeybix · 14/09/2011 16:01

oh forgot to say... she didn't listen to the heartbeat as they often can't blah blah and not to worry mums blah blah... I didn't mind... well I did a bit, but not too much.

and even though now I am officially 15+4 I'm still sticking with 16+4 and still plumbing for a leap day baby!!!

InnocentRedhead · 14/09/2011 16:44

Thank you all for the tips, started to relax, and feeling a little better already. Still wondering where my bump has gone. I can totally relate to what someone said earlier about bump disappearing and just appearing flabby! Will book a doctors appointment because it is consuming everything!

It just seems to be one thing after another because further to this, I am having to look for a second job!!! I have had my hours dropped to 8 a week - suspecting that my boss thinks I am not physically capable of the tasks! I work at McDonalds for fucks sake. (Some of it is physically hard work - but I can do everything else) I have been taken off the full time rota and put on the part time schedule. So I am 18+ weeks pregnant and having to look for a second job. No-one will hire me :( I don't know what to do at all. Earning only £50 a week means i will earn £45 a week in Maternity allowance, as I am not even eligible for SMP! Bloody crisis mode for everything me. Anyone care to swap lives? Or care to suggest anything.

On a lighter note - I have got my scan in 2weeks 2days :) can't wait. Thats one thing I have going for me, the baby.

God I am in tears writing this, just looked at how much of a bloody shit hole my life is.

Need a Wine and I am going to bloody well have one!

Kayano · 14/09/2011 16:44

I feel like I haven't eaten in my whole life!!!! I'm starving! And I had an Indian for lunch Angry

Going to MIL for tea and if it's not served quick enough I'm stealing her fruitbowl Grin

Feeling baby moving now and I love it. DH has too and now keeps grabbing me to touch my tummy which I just go to mush over because it's our first and DH has never ever been so nice to me when FIFA or football manager are not die out anyway

ZhenXiang · 14/09/2011 16:45

Congratulations Bill and Esme lovely news :)

Sorry there are so many still feeling sick, mine has mostly gone, but certain foods seem to set it off again and just have to come back out. Maybe baby doesn't like them?!

I am 16+3, 16 week appointment is next Tuesday when I will be 17+1 as it was booked on my LMP dates and not the new ones from my 12 week scan. Hope that I will hear the baby's heartbeat, I am sure with DD I did but this time having an anterior placenta might make it more difficult.

Woowa - a few questions if I may about re-usable nappies, as I used disposables with DD and am seriously thinking about totsbots or the like for DC2. Do you use biodegradable flushable liners or the washable liners? How many would I need to start with? How big does baby have to be before you can start using them? Do they last the night/hold toddler wees well?

Kayano · 14/09/2011 16:48

Surely you can take action against them dropping your hours just cos you are pregnant? I used to work in mcds and never knew them to do that. Is it a franchise?

I took the piss when I worked there 'oh, sorry I don't work Friday nights anymore' while writing it in the availability book lol

ZhenXiang · 14/09/2011 16:57

I am not sure that your manager's decision is legal Innocent, it could fall under sex discrimination and also breach of contract, and would suggest that you seek advice from the Citizens Advice Bureau or a Law Centre asap.

Have you a contract that has set hours?

Some info here with good links. Also ACAS may be of help.

Get everything you can in writing x

littlemonkeybix · 14/09/2011 17:10

Sending you a big fat Wine innocent (obviously with all the alcohol only affecting your brain, and not seeping to baba)

What a bunch of arse Sad

Definitely get on the CAB route, and see what legal advice you can grab too... your boss definitely falls into the cockend category!!
