Haha I had the same assumptions about Ghost, Davina and Piggy Grin

Trope I didn't try on the bumps, mine was huuuuge that day and as big as the fake bumps! Shock Has gone down again the last couple of days (think it was all water) so feel less whale like.
I dragged DP along with me because I'm an awful shopper, if I go in by myself I'll shuffle round the shop sulking then buy nothing Blush The woman there was great though she asked what I was looking for then breezed around the shop scooping up all my options in my size without me having to tell her what size I am! I should employ her as my personal shopper!

Piggy very happy to hear little Pierre (fantastic name!) is well Grin I had a guinea called splodge when I was little (along with a billion rabbits) and adored him.

Good luck with the midwife today! I'm off for my 16 week check this afternoon so will, fingers crossed, be able to hear the heartbeat! Can't wait! Hopefully will get a step closer to seeing someone about this hip pain too.

Baby movement is stronger and definately the baby rather than wind now Smile

PiggyMad · 16/08/2011 09:51

Hi ladies!
carlita do you remember those funny ceramic pig ornaments that used to be in different poses that you could collect from H Samuel or something?! Like those Liliput Lane little cottages etc?! My friend when we were at school had a windowsill full of them and they were hideous! I collect the real ones - have 4 at the minute. Ceramic ones are probably a lot less smelly Grin!

Also had the same assumption about davina! But hadn't really thought about ghost or trope - also have no idea what trope means!!

bun I'm really jealous of the fake-bump shop! Is it a chain? I wonder if they get randomers in on girly days out trying them on for a laugh!? Have you heard the heartbeat before bun or will this be the first time on a doppler? Good luck for it!

When is your first scan carlita?

ghosteditor · 16/08/2011 09:52

Good luck to those with MW appointments today! Bun hope you do get to hear the heartbeat - it made me feel all schmoopy when I did at mine. Don't worry if it takes a while - with me it took a good minute or two, and the heartbeat was eventually found by pressing the doppler sensor into my bellybutton Grin

Am loving the name analysis; I do it too. For what it's worth, editing is not my full time job but I wish it was! More of a bit on the side of my current position, which sounds more exciting but in actual fact is often quite dull. Also, I should clarify that in my sector of publishing the summer is deadly quiet (all the academics are on vacation and most other countries I deal with are on summer holiday) which is why I appear to be such a slacker at the moment. I do work hard, honest!

ghosteditor · 16/08/2011 09:56

oh and trope used to be my favourite term when analysing literature (I read English at university). It sort of means a recurring device or motif that's not actually a cliche. Like, for example, the changeling child always turning out to be descended from blue blood and being returned to their rightful position by the end of the novel/film etc. I like the name choice for MN!

BunMyOven · 16/08/2011 15:41

I'm back from the midwife and heard the heartbeat! Grin Piggy it was the first time I've heard it and it was fab, really strong and clear. It sounded like a horse galloping so it must be a girl! Wink Ghost I too felt all schmoopy!
DS told the baby to "Sssh baby! Shush!" which was very cute and a sign of things to come!

Those ceramic pig ornaments were the exact ones I had in mind piggy! Grin

I love the term trope too and try to use it as often as possible

ghosteditor · 16/08/2011 15:45

oh, now I'm feeling schmoopy on your behalf - pregnancy hormones are definitely kicking in now Grin. That's fab.

PiggyMad · 17/08/2011 08:44

Morning ladies!
That sounds fab hearing the heartbeat bun Grin!! Are you going to get a doppler do you think or just listen when the midwife tries?

ghost you brought back all of my literature modules with your explanation of trope - the term was tucked away there somewhere! What field do you edit/work in? Assuming literature, but don't worry if you don't want to say and 'out' yourself!

Morning to carlita, davina and trope - your ears must be burning Wink
How are you symptom-wise carlita?

MammaInTheMaking · 17/08/2011 10:09

Hi Ladies!

Been reading this thread on the train to work and remember many of you from the TTC thread. Has been lovely hearing everybody's progress and also reading about the baby things/mat clothes some of you have been buying. I can't wait to get my first pair of mat jeans! Also can't wait to get my first book!

Am now 6 weeks preggo. Only gave my registration forms to the GP surgery yesterday (we moved recently) so am leaving it a couple more days before I make an appointment. Do i just say i want a GP app or do i tell the receptionist that i need the app because i'm pregnant?

Have only had slight nausea and sensitive to smell so far as symptoms go. But expect i've not experienced nothing yet as super early. I don't have a bump but i do feel like there's something sort of 'solid' in my belly that I can't suck in. I'm a size 10. By 12 weeks do most women have a bump? Only one of my friend's has had a baby so it's all relatively unknown to me...

Don't want to bring a downer on things or anything because i'm super happy and excited...but this morning DP and I had a disagreement about this all because he says he cannot get excited/believe this is real until we get some confirmation from the Drs. He says he doesn't want to have to "pick me up if things go wrong" and says I shouldn't let myself get too excited. I've hardly mentioned it at all because I know how he feels and things but I feel like i do need SOMEONE to talk to about it. Not in an excited way, but like how i'm feeling, how my body has started to change slightly and things like that. Not all the time, but i can't pretend this isn't real until someone else confirms it! I know where he's coming from, but am feeling a little bruised from it and don't know what I can do to 'get' what i need without speaking to him about these things... So that's why i've jumped on here now to share all these things with you lovely lot. I hope I can stay? xx

MammaInTheMaking welcome to the list, great to have you here! Sorry to hear about your husband being a bit less supportive than you'd like - I think it's fairly common but it makes me want to give him a swift kick to buck up his ideas! It's completely natural that you're excited, and if you're not telling anyone else then you need your DH to be excited too. My DH has been supportive but was out of the country for the better part of weeks 4-13 so I couldn't really talk things over with anyone (hence the MN addiction!)

Boys are rubbish, aren't they? I just wanted to say not to get your hopes up too much about the GP appt - I didn't even see a GP (they weren't interested) so I just saw the midwife at 8 weeks, and all she did was take blood and urine tests and go through some paperwork. I phoned up and said that I was pregnant and who did I need to see - the receptionist said MW. The only real confirmation was at the 12 week scan, which made things very very real (DH had to miss it for work Sad). All I can really suggest if your DH is going to be like this until he sees a scan is that you pay for an early scan privately, but you won't see very much at 6 weeks which could cause a lot of anxiety - much better to wait until 8 weeks. Pregnancy tests are extremely accurate now so if they say you're pg, you're pg! Would it help to get a digital test that says 5+ weeks and let it develop in front of him? It's extremely rare to get a false positive with a digi.

Just got back from the 20 week scan with DH and it was the best most exciting thing ever - especially to see him seeing his child on the screen wriggling about Grin

ghosteditor · 17/08/2011 10:43

oh, and I did have a bit of a bump at 12 weeks but it's not really all that common in first pregnancies - all the books say nearer to 20 weeks is more common to start showing. I'm 19 weeks now and have been out of most of my trousers since about week nine (little fatty that I am...)

ghosteditor · 17/08/2011 10:45

piggy I'm in academic publishing - my main job isn't editorial any more but the books I do handle tend to be classics/history, as I can kind of pick and choose the few books I do edit. Having said that, I'm just taking a look at translating a French book on philosophy, so it's a bit of a mix.

PiggyMad · 17/08/2011 11:58

Hi Mamma and congratulations!!! You've skipped me on the dd list Envy!!
Me and DH haven't really been talking about it that much as we are both being cautious, although I had a midwife appt yesterday (5 and half weeks) and he seemed a lot more interested after that. I've been thinking about having an early scan just for reassurance, but not sure I can justify the £100 at the minute Hmm

Here I just rang the doctors and said I was about 4 weeks pregnant and who do I see and when. The receptionist said midwife at around 6 weeks, so she booked me in. She just took blood pressure, urine sample and family history and referred me for my 12 week scan. I've got another appt at 10 weeks for bloods.

ghost your job sounds really interesting. I love reading history texts. My PhD is in French (not written in French, but in the field of French!), though can't imagine getting my head around philosophical ideas well enough to be able to translate them - respect!

MammaInTheMaking · 17/08/2011 12:01

Hi Ghost. Thank you very much for your words of support. And also the tip with the Drs etc. I'll just ring up and say i'm pg and see what they suggest I do. Although it seems like a long time til 12 weeks, it's not that much really. I'm not desperate to have things 'officially' happening, not feeling the urge to buy loads of things or shout it from the roof tops. I'm really happy to keep things low key between DP and myself however it did upset me a bit this morning when he shut me down as he did. Although i'm not jumping around like an excited puppy, I really do need that support from him just to be able to talk about things. He said i've been tired and stroppy the last week or so but hasn't bothered to think that maybe I'm knackered because there's a little bean growing inside me. And i don't dare say the reason for me being tired if it's going to turn into another disagreement over how much I should be talking about this before we know it's really real. Have done 5 tests and all positive, so I know i'm not making it up. He's really happy and it's planned but he's cautious. I'm rambling!

Ladies - am really happy to be in your company and already have a weight off my mind that i can ask questions here. Thank goodness for MN :)

Love to everyone x

ghosteditor · 17/08/2011 12:08

piggy I've just re-read my post and seen how you could misunderstand - when I say I'm looking at a book to translate I mean that I will decide whether we want to do the book and then we will pay for an experienced translator to do the work! Funnily enough in my line of work, 'editing' is not really a big part of the job - we do the early, structural work (shape and outline of the book, whether chapters need to be moved around etc), but the production team do the copyediting and proof reading. Just a quirk of the academic publishing industry. I've actually worked in physics, economics, philosophy, history, sociology, and translation publishing so far, and believe me, I'm not smart enough to be able to comment sensibly on all of those fields Wink

PiggyMad · 17/08/2011 12:15

Oh right, ghost, Blush I did misunderstand! Do you a bit more reviewing-type work, then? I'm very nosy as you can tell Blush

ghosteditor · 17/08/2011 12:22

Sorry, it's my fault - in fact was talking to one of the interns yesterday about how much shorthand we use in publishing, plus all the acronyms and random names for things. And the terms vary quite a lot between different kinds of publishing (academic and trade for example). We're usually called acquisition editors or commissioning editors and we go out to find books by academics to publish, or come up with an idea for a book and find someone to write it. So we work with authors from first proposal to final draft and then we hand over to production (though in practice we do all sorts of work throughout production and up to and after the launch). In some cases we can be working with an author on a book for several years. Essentially, we remain the point of contact for the author throughout the whole process and oversee everything from paper quality to internal and external design, print quantity, release date, book launch, everything (even if we don't have final say on some of these issues). I like it because it's pretty varied day to day and there are lots of trips out of the office.

As I said, though, I've moved across from editorial into another department so I deal with translations now, which is a different issue, and just do a few books on the side.

Carlitawantsababy · 17/08/2011 20:41

Ooh, trope is a lovely term! Very exciting seeing/hearing your babies bun and ghost! Grin ghost I got your address and will get that book in the post for you soon. piggy just feeling sooo tired from 5pm onwards! I'm like a baby! Smile I have my midwife appointment tomorrow and my scan on the 2nd sept, can't wait! mamma hooray! Welcome! It is very hard for the men I think, they just don't have the physical feelings and connection that we do. My GP as others have said did not do a pg test, just believed me so don't think you'll get any more confirmation than your own test until your scan. It will sink in with him soon I'm sure! My DH said something a bit horrid, he said "it'll be really goo ld once we have the scan and see that it is actually a baby in there and not just a bundle of legs or something" !Sad! oh, right, thanks for that image!

OP posts:
Carlitawantsababy · 17/08/2011 20:42

goo ld = good BTW

OP posts:
MammaInTheMaking · 18/08/2011 08:48

Hi carlita yeah that image of legs is a little disturbing! Hehe. Nah it'll be a perfect little bubba!!

Well I'm much happier today. DP and I had a little chat about stuff last night and it turns out that he couldn't quite believe we were pg and he didn't realise that a BFP = baby growing in there for sure. When it clicked he suddenly got really excited and started being really normal about it all. This morning he's been jabbering about it too. So everything is exciting a good again! Phew.

Will give the GP surgery a call in a min and see what's what.

Thanks everyone, feeling a million times more positive today Grin x

ghosteditor · 18/08/2011 09:22

oh yey that's lovely news mamma. Well done you! Honestly, men are so rubbish sometimes!

BunMyOven · 18/08/2011 10:01

Hi!
Piggy was tempted to get a Doppler but I'd just obsess over it if I did! So going to leave it for MW visits. I find MW appointments so bloody boring apart from the heartbeat bit to it'll keep me motivated to go Blush

Welcome Mamma! So glad to hear your DP has perked up about it all Smile Think it's easier for the mother to get to grips with the idea of a new baby because they've got the physical connection. Is the saying 'A woman becomes a mother when she gets pregnant, a man becomes a father when he sees his baby.'? Obviously not always true but it certainly was for my DP with our son.

Ghost! Congratulations on your scan!!

Oh Carlita! What was your DP thinking?! Clearly he wasn't! What a thing to say - hope you made him squirm after! The plonker Smile

PiggyMad · 18/08/2011 10:32

Morning!
Glad you're feeling better mama I think I was in such shock when I found out that I wanted a positive reassuring reaction from DH, so can understand how you felt. Glad

carlita sorry to laugh but your dp's comment had me in kinks!! Where do they get these ideas from - and then feel the need to say them out loud?! Glad the sickness is staying away. I'm starting to get really tired now, too. Hope that's all I get! ps still waiting to see those dungarees Wink

bun how long to midwife visits usually last? I thought it would be a quick ten minutes in and out!? Hope it's not an hour every time Confused It's nice to have something to look forward to with the heartbeat. What's the old wives' saying about the speed? Girls have faster heartbeats?

Hope everyone's having a good day. I'm messing around with figures as panicking about finances - eek!

MammaInTheMaking · 18/08/2011 13:30

Off to the doc next Weds. Don't know what to expect but....YAY!!!!!! DP's completely beside himself now. He's talking about cracking open a bottle of fizzy tomorrow night to celebrate. Honestly - he's such a silly sometimes!

Still got the bundle of legs image in my head Hmm

Carlitawantsababy · 18/08/2011 20:04

Thanks for all the sympathy! I wasn't expecting that! Smile I told him last night that I'd just told you lot what he'd said (it was weeks ago and I can now find it funny) and he told me "ball". "ball of legs, not bundle!" Grin anyway, he's forgiven because he's so excited and so good but it was definitely one of those things he should have reviewed before he said it!
Guess what? I posted dungaree pictures this afternoon and was just dropping in to let you know!

Just had my booking in appointment. Nice to get things started. They'd run out of bounty packs though so I only have a sore arm to show for it! Getting my form for dentistry and free prescriptions sent out which is good, haven't been to the dentist in years Blush hospital is near my favourite (vegan) chinese so am waiting for mock duck and pancakes [tree-hugging emoticon] Grin
