carlita I got the fabric from an American company called Spoonflower - the website says that delivery can takes weeks and weeks to the UK, but it actually only took about 10 days (maybe less) to arrive. There is a selection of videogame related fabric here and the one I got was this pacman one. They do each pattern in a range of different fabrics, so you should be able to find one that is suitable for making clothes! :) I'm waiting on my DP freeing my sewing machine (it's buried in the spare room at the moment) before I can make the wheaty bag cover. I bought the linen cotton canvas fabric as I wanted something quite hard wearing - i'm yet to put it in the microwave to check it is OK being heated like that, but it should be fine, I hope!
Mario Nursery - yeah - it's fab isn't it! DP and I debated doing a videogames themed nursery, but decided that we were going to keep away from brand related decor, didn't feel quite right to put licensed characters in a babies room somehow! If fuzzy loves mario when they are older we can always redecorate! :)
fools ouch at the tiger balm!! Extension sounds cool - i'd love to extend my house! (Well, I'd prefer to move, but can't afford that either!) What are you planning on getting done? Great that you can move in with your folks while the work is done - do you get on well? I think i'd murder my mother if I had to live with her for any extended period of time!!
Wheat bag - I make a plain cotton liner for it and fill it between 1/3 and 1/2 full of whatever I'm using (wheat, pearly barley etc), how full depends on whether you want quite a rigid bag, say for your lower back, or a floppier one to wrap around your toes, then sew that firmly closed (needs to be strong enough that the seams won't pull apart when it's used and let wheat/barley escape. Then I make an outer using the nicer fabric that the wheat filled inner sits in - I make it like a pillow case with the flap at the end so the inner doesn't fall out. I wash the fabric before cutting/sewing it. You can't use fabric with lycra in as it isn't safe to microwave - if you stick to 100% cotton you should be fine. I found some nice plain cotton velvet last year and made small pocket sized wheat bags for putting in coat pockets for walks/waiting at the bus stop in the cold as christmas presents...
You'll want to microwave it and let it cool a few times so the barley/wheat fully dries out - it will feel a bit clammy and damp the first few times you use it, so if it's a present you probably want to use it a bit before giving it away! I'd use this time to work out the duration to microwave it - large bags I do for 2-3 minutes (depending on how high powered the microwave is) small ones for pockets/inside wellies are more like 1 minute.
In theory you are supposed to occasionally microwave the bag with a cup of water in the microwave with it so it doesn't dry out too much and become flammable. That being said I have never done that, have used the same wheaty bag for around a decade and never had a problem with it... If you google wheaty bags you'll find all sorts of dire warnings about them catching fire "when covered with a duvet in bed" - as they supposedly "get hotter", but basic science tells you that isn't possible - wheaty bags "catching fire" in a bed would have to have been smouldering already when coming out of the microwave - so the key thing is to not overheat them. I personally find it hard to believe someone would set fire to it in a microwave, not notice when getting it out (they stink when they burn!) and then put it in a bed.. but as the darwin awards show, some people are a touch challenged in the IQ department...
To put smelly stuff like lavender buds in, I believe you need to properly dry them out first (if you're picking fresh lavender that is) by warming them in a low oven or in an airing cupboard. Best to google instructions for that as I haven't done it myself so can't give exact advice! If using pre-dried stuff then just add it into the wheat/barley mix when you fill the inner bag.
I found some basic instructions for making wheaty bags here if they are any use!
Alternatively there are some places online where you can buy kits e.g. here
I think you should definitely post a photo of you as boy george!!! I'm a total fancy dress hater - avoid it like the plague - but I love me some karaoke!! (I used to busk as a teenager though, so karaoke holds no fear for me). Your DS sounds super cute btw - "pay me nana" - hee hee, he will do well! :)
bats sonic over mario?! Good god, don't let my DP hear you say that! He's such a nintendo fanboy!!!
I am also welling up over adverts. And children laughing as they run down the street. And songs on the radio. I nearly cried when I had lunch on the beach yesterday as it was just so nice... I'm not used to being an emotional wreck like this!!
Davina I can't decide if I want it to snow in October or not! I love snow, but it does really rather screw up our life as our road doesn't get gritted and I end up housebound once the virgin snow gets crushed down into slippery ice... I'm not at all convinced that the weather predictions are worth listening to anyway - they so rarely get long range forecasts right... Now snow at christmas, that I can most certainly get behind! I would absolutely love a white christmas!
Bun WOOO - sewing machine! That's great - do you know what one she got you? You have no excuse now you know!!
And that's another whopping great essay from me - I really need to learn to be more succinct!!
Oh - and the plumber is here right now installing the new boiler. I AM SO EXCITED!!!
