Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
cep · 16/08/2011 20:56

hello ladies

hoo7 oh how frustrating, i'm sorry it was sorted for you. fx for thursday (and defo get a kitten don't forget dh will have to pick up the poo.)

alicat i have my growth scan on friday, am looking forward to it as well. Enjoy tomorrow. Hope your niece and family friends dd is ok.

Katiebeau · 16/08/2011 21:06

Hello All.

H007 - sorry you have more waiting time and worry but the biopsy wasn't positive so that's great news.

Re pads - I started with the big massive soft bricks, moved to Mothercare ones with wings and then always night and day pads. Over 8 weeks! The bricks lasted oh, 5 days I think.

17 days of work left. I can't wait to finish.

Hospital bag in attic, nothing purchased. Perhaps I should think about it now I'm over 29 weeks!

Cali I do hope you get decent support. Try and get your GP to make sure you see the right person again. I'm sorry you are suffering from this disjointed care.

Kate393 - twitchy eye here too. Very distracting. Mine is simply tiredness.

Oh and for 1st timers - don't try and sit on the hard chairs in the little kitchen most postnatal wards have the morning after having the baby. Bloody well hurts!!!

Also don't underestimate how much you and your DP will want to sit and stare any your baby and no MW, HV or GP ever said anything other than "you cannot cuddle a little baby too much". I can't wait. Snuggle time. Hmmmmmm Smile

Staceroo · 16/08/2011 21:23

katie can't wait fr the first snuggles!

I absolutely love all this advice, though my DH was reading over my shouler and I think he got a bit grossed out!

Think I'm gonna pack my bags ready for about 4 weeks before due date. Just in case!

Someone mentioned blood tests at 28 week appointment is that standard? I never know what to expect each week when I go!

Had some new maternity trousers delivered today! They're soooo comfy! £22 from Next!

I had promised DH that I wouldn't buy anything else this month, but I came home yesterday and showed him the red marks my trousers were leaving in my hips and he said " well you'd better by some new trousers then!" Love him! 2 skirts coming tomorrow too!

MooseyMoo · 16/08/2011 21:54

Staceroo Yes, 28 week appointment checks bloods (they ask your permission), blood pressure, urine sample, fundal height and heart beat.

Your poor DH, nobody really tells you about how gross it is. Luckily from our view you don't get to see much! I made a real effort not to look at my stitches. Have 2 comical images from that time of two midwives coming to my house and looking at my stitches with their heads on the side. And my husband walking in on me blow drying my muff to dry my stitches after a shower. He thought it was hilarious, so did I until I left the dryer in one place too long as I was laughing Hmm.

I think I used the brick pads for much longer than that but I did have a 2nd degree tear with lateral lacerations (no idea how that happened). I did use always with wings and a maternity pad as none of the maternity pads have wings - v annoying.

Realised haven't 'seen' juststarting for a while - hope you are ok.

Poppet45 · 16/08/2011 21:59

H007 So sorry you're in limbo. I definitely think you deserve a kitten.
Bumpandisaacsmum That is such a great idea of the identical bags! DH was not great at working out what to bring when I was in hospital. Or indeed on the way. He forgot the birth plan and hadn't remembered to get any cash out for the cab so had to take his whole sodding glass change jar!! Afterwards bless him he went out to buy me big apple catcher pants that went over the scar after my surprise section and came back with some prepregnancy size 10 ones . Plus a few small bags you can bring in as you need them is so much better than one big one, containing everything for labour, baby, and the postnatal stage. I can't tell you how irritating it is to try to direct your DH to which pocket something's in when you're in the middle of a contraction.
Can I just add maternity bags in general. Arrggggh are we at that stage already??
Knockedupagain You see, you say you have a daughter called Imogen, and I'm thinking ooooh what a nice name. I'm so in the middle in terms of my views on it that I think we'll be fine with it if that's what DH picks. I guess it's just not as new to me as the ones I've just read up in the books so I need to reevaluate them all side by side.
Ziggi Can I just second what Pamsco said, it's YOUR first baby, MIL's had her go at least once already and needs to back right off. And yep like lots of overhelpful PIL her info is actually very out of date. What an indictment on the power of advertising: Johnson's has an awful reputation in the cosmetics industry insiders as the last thing you'd want to put anywhere near a baby's skin. Even their nappy wipes are super harsh compared to other brands. DS is two on Friday and we've never had to use soap or bubble bath with him. He has a bath every night with Oilatum bath emoliant in it, and we use Oilatum moisturiser afterwards (both because he developed eczema in the past after we used a far too harsh cradle cap shampoo) and then a Nature Baby shampoo if his hair needs a wash and he's as sweet (smelling) as a toddler can be.
Oh and cakes and GTT and all that malarky... am v aware my super sweet craving is kicking in like last time. I don't think it's normal to down a litre of orange fruit juice a day and am trying to stop. I don't want another giant child.

voodoomunkee · 17/08/2011 07:43

Morning, got a mw appointment for bloods etc today. Gtt, do I need to worry about that, nobody has mentioned it to me! (just got up so not really with it yet!). Looking forward to having a couple of days off next week, woke up wishing it was today!

H007 hope you are ok and have some answers soon.

bumpandisaacsmum · 17/08/2011 07:48

h007 hope the mammogram provides some answers; as others have said they wouldn't have put baby undue risk.

Hope those with GTT get good results.

ziggi sorry you have an interfering MiL, as others have said listen-filter-ignore what you dont want to listen too.

Am currently running on minimal sleep here - two night running of less the 3hrs sleep; not sure how I'm going to function at work today. Nausea has also come back big time; if I dont eat I feel sick & dizzy but them when I eat I feel sick even if it just a mouthful!! Feels like back in 1st trimester all those weeks ago.

MW today; DS will be coming with so he can hear HB :) Baby has been really wriggling the last couple of days; seems to like laying transverse during the day (and bladder bounces) then wriggles head down in the evening (and rib kicks). Am loving knowing baby's movememts & patterns now.

Hope everyone has a good day x x

neverinamillionyears · 17/08/2011 08:54

Oh dear Bump hope you feel better through the day. I too have midwife appt today, going to the community one and not the hospital to try them out. I'm hoping they will be good. DP is coming straight from work so I'll be sitting next to a strapping 6'4" in uniform in the waiting room. Should I whack the handcuffs on just to see what reactions I'll get? ha ha ha.

Maternity pads - A friend has suggested I don't bother with those and just go with some Tena pants. I have bought a pack and they do feel like nappies but very padded where it's needed and VERY secure - no worries about a pad moving around or falling out!

Headboard - It hasn't come out too bad actually, It's very simple, you need:

MDF/ply wood (I used half inch thick) cut to size
foam - 2" thick cut to size purchased from an old place behind an upholsters.
spray adhesive - I used one for carpets
staple gun and staples
wadding (americans call it batting)
fabric
self cover buttons

  1. Sand the edges of the wood lightly just to take off rough edges
  2. Drill small holes if you are going to button it first
  3. Spray both the foam and wood with adhesive and stick together
  4. Lay the wadding on the floor then the headboard and then pull all edges taught and staple to the back. DO NOT overlap too much with the wadding or you'll end up with a bit of a bumpy edge like we have.
  5. Then lay headboard on top of fabric and do the same. I would suggest to do the corners first, it does depend on the fabric. We ended up taking out staples as we had done the sides first and didn't have enough excess to make a neat corner so out came the staples.
  6. Continue pulling the fabric taught as you can all the way round and whack in as many staples as needed to hold it.
  7. Nearly there just the buttons if you like them. I used self cover ones as no sewing needed so perfect for me. I then threaded some garden wire (doubled) through the button and threaded it through through the hole, it helps to use something to assist you with this, I also had to make a little incision with scissor on the fabric side to help it through. Then with me pushing the button into the headboard and DP pulling on the with push it back as deep as you want and then staple the wires.

All done, just now need to fix it to the bed, we haven't got that far yet. Alternatively rather than reading the above just you tube 'making a headboard'. very simple if I can manage it.

stripeymummy · 17/08/2011 09:12

Morning everybody,

H007 good luck with the results of the mammogram, though as the biopsy was clear fingers crossed that it will show up nothing.

ziggi I agree with what everyone else says. I would find it very difficult to put up with interfering MiL and own parents! Can you find away to firmly but nicely let her know that this is YOUR child, and you will bring him/her up as you feel fit - and get DH to support, not just kow-tow to his mum? Or you can do what my aunt said: listen and take on board everyone's advice, then do your own thing :o

Manchester cardiac appointment yesterday went well :) woop woop! BP good, proteins in pee good, fundus correct height, baby heart normal, wriggling=good. And the old dicky-ticker has not deteriorated, whoohoo. And if I am still in the same condition in 3wks (my next appointment) then I can officially have a natural childbirth - yay! (Rather then a c-section). The only thing is I have to have an induced labour at 38wks. Which sounds fine, we're all happy. Having an epidural, and I can only have 2nd stage of 1/2hour max, so I have to wait until the baby has dropped right into the cervix before I can start pushing - otherwise forceps :( Then, whilst sitting in Manchester Museum cafe having a cup of tea about 4pm, it hit me: that's only 10 weeks away Shock . It seems like 5mins ago that I was 18wks. And there is so much to get ready - argh! It's definitely time to start making lists.....

stripeymummy · 17/08/2011 09:13

Also: thanks for all advice on maternity bags - they will def be included in my lists Wink

Staceroo · 17/08/2011 10:10

Thanks Moosey but what does "Fundal height" mean????

Katiebeau · 17/08/2011 10:15

Its the measurement from your pubis to the top of your uterus (I think). It's where they measure your bump and by some miracle the number of cm is approx the same number of weeks you are (+/- 2). Which proves metric is the divine measurement system, how did this work in inches??????

Ziggimajiggi · 17/08/2011 12:48

Hi there,

Thanks all for being lovely. I'm sue MIL means well and it's all motivated out of love, just damned stressful and annoying. I'm going to try to explain to her that it isn't the 70s any more, and DH and I will ask for her opinion if we bloody well want it.

Stripey Glad it all went well and fingers crossed for a natural birth :)

Bump Hope you get some kip and feel better soon.

Literally can't believe there is so little time to go! Will seriously be doing some shopping at the weekend. Oooh I love a good list!

PMA: 35 working days until mat leave :) Huzzah!

Have a boss day
xxx
Ziggi

voodoomunkee · 17/08/2011 15:45

Had mw appointment. Am all good, bump all good too! Have put on just under 9lbs, pretty happy with that. Mw said to tell hospital I wanna home birth andnot to be put off by their crap. I love my mw she always explains stuff and puts stuff in perspective for me! Am measuring possible 2 weeks ahead but not worried. Had blood taken and gotta wait for results and collect them a week on Friday, assuming all is well and I haven't heard anything, as got anti-d injection then. Hope everyone is ok today

bumpandisaacsmum · 17/08/2011 16:57

MW appt went well; had a registrar GP in appt aswell, felt a little uncomfortable at first (would never say no though as I know how hard but valuable it is to learn with patients) was more uncomfortable due to talking about mood rather than physical issues but soon ignored he was there and just chatted to MW. Anyway, all is well for baby - measuring perfect for dates, HB 135bpm, cephalic position (head down). Up til yesterday baby was transverse and felt lots of movement through night so thought position change had happened. Mummy, not doing so well - physically ok as far as I know - didn't ask a couple of questions but nothing of great importance -but MW very supportive and reassuring.

katie I was reading that thread at some unearthly hour this morning & chuckling away.

voodoo & stripey glad all went well with your appts. Never hope your appt went well.

stace fundal height is as Katie says...MW sometimes do it the "old" way using their fingers to count - my MW was showing a registrar GP today!!

Am now going to snuggle down with DS and watch sleep through the film cars.

Folicacid · 17/08/2011 18:37

Gads I'm knackered. Cannot sleep.

Good to hear of good appointments and growing babies.
I'm being kicked a lot these days. Yesterday it was really low, other times high and also at side. Think moves around a lot.

Bumps post has reminded me of the old wives tail/ rumour that you can tell the baby's sex from the heartbeat. Is it higher it is, more likely to be a girl?

Every time, our baby's heartbeat has been 150bpm. Anyone on team blue or pink have 'matching' heartbeats to the sex?

Folicacid · 17/08/2011 18:38

tale not tail. Jeezuz. I AM knackered.

alicat10 · 17/08/2011 18:41

Voodoo, Stripey & Bump glad appts all went well.

Mine went well in so far as scan was great - baby head down as I thought with 1 hand up by face and other holding foot. Measurements all with normal range albeit a big head (runs in DH family so no big surprise) and estimating 2lb 14oz which seems like a good weight. Frustrating part was to hang around for ages to see 4th diff registrar in as many appts and to hear I am unlikely to see him at all. After stewing at work for a couple of hours I rang around and managed to switch to the consultant I had last time who I saw at all but one appts - fingers crossed I will get to see him this time!

bumpandisaacsmum · 17/08/2011 19:00

folic the old wives tale is higher heart rate (galloping horse in sound) for girl & lower heart rate (train sounding) for boy. With DS it wasn't accurate. With this one it has been around 145-150 at most appt but has been actively kicking the monitor & wriggling away whereas today it was 135 but baby was quiet & in an awkward spot!!

Folicacid · 17/08/2011 20:03

Aaah bumps so a girl then. It's definitely been horsey.

Right, who is brave enough to talk to me about vaginal discharge? I'm amazed on a daily basis. I've resorted to wearing panty liners as sick of wet knickers. It's not itchy, thrushy, dodgy, smelly. Just lots of it. Anyone else or am I a pregnant freak? books say you do get an increase but whooooah. It's been a surprise.

cep · 17/08/2011 20:15

evening all, glad appts have been going well, and good news all round. I've started trying to eat a bit healthier today, (although didn't succeed much) i've put on loads in this last week, just through eating rubbish and that worries me.

hoo7 good luck for tomorrow.

PamSco · 17/08/2011 20:30

Folic I've had no discharge until the last week and a half. It's not something I get whilst not preggers.

TMI WARNING

But OH brought the washing down and asked what exactly I had been doing with the Primula I've been buying!

It isn't loads but the odd day it is noticable. More often than not it is clear but occassionally white. I'm told it is to be expected...

TMI Over

Great to hear about the good MW appts - growth wise. I have mine on the 23rd.

On hb - our wee one had a definite train sound and the mw just said "boy" 6 weeks later that was confirmed... Boy.

Bump I've been ok with the juniors joining my appointments except for one lassy I asked to leave as I wanted to talk about risks I was concerned with involving my weight and age. I just didn't fancy the audience.

[here I go again] at hypnobirthing they were talking about a study done looking at length of labour and number of spectators. They estimated that for every person in the room you could add 1 hour to the length of labour. Theory being that most women don't like being watched when they are in a vunerable state. So they tense up. Result, prolonged labour. So I definitely won't be having spectators.

OP posts:
Folicacid · 17/08/2011 20:50

I think I just peed a bit there Pam. Hilarious.

neverinamillionyears · 17/08/2011 20:57

Folic I've been suffering with the same 'outage' and have been for a fair few weeks. yuk.

MW appt today, hb is 148, we don't know what we are having so we'll see if the old wives tale is correct and its a girl.
