Hi ladies, I've had a few days away from the computer, so I need to go back and catch up! Meanwhile I've got my GTT this morning - pity me! Hmm

voodoomunkee · 16/08/2011 08:10

Morning all, just a quick post as dashing about! I bought cheap nighties and pj's from primark along with slippers and dark towels. Called into boots bought mat pads and cotton wool! Have about 6 sleepsuits/vests ready to pack, hat, nappies and some travel size bottles of shampoo, conditioner etc for me. Still got loads of little things to get but am going to split up the nappies, cotton wool, clothes etc into other piles, Ome in a bag which will become emergency staying in hospital longer bag that either goes in the carnor is by the front door for OH/dm to collect. I distinctly remember not buying enough mat pads and not feeling like I wanted to go out and get any a cple days after my 1st one so am buying a canny few packs. I also need to make sure to buy some cheap yoga type pants and tops for travelling too and from hospital! Do I sound super organised? It's all a myth haha. I did get given a travel cot and spare blankets yesterday which was really kind, did chuckle at OH trying to put it up! Hope everyone well, am off to do 2nd last big activity of the summer yay! Mw tomorrow and am exhausted already and it's only Tuesday!

alicat10 · 16/08/2011 08:14

Good luck H007 & Stripey x

PamSco · 16/08/2011 08:39

Gah! Lost my post!

Good luck Buffy I have mine this morning too. You'll be grand - I'M HUNGRY

Thanks Missy for link to Mothercare I'll check out the local store.

Bump huge thanks for double bag idea - really useful. The lists are great too thanks. I'm taking some food as well for both of us and my own swiss ball - if I'm only 4 or 5 dilated I won't get into the delivery room so I'll want my ball in the waiting area. It can stay in the car until needed.

Can't help with birthing pool either but we covered water birth in hypnobirthing on Sunday and teach said that the decreasing temperature is often a really good thing because you give off so much heat when in labour.

I can see it is easy to fill from a hose but how do you empty it???

My boss has just realised it is only 10 weeks until I'm off and is having kittens all of a sudden. I'm staying in work as late as I think I'll be comfortable 36 weeks. But now he has turned into a stress monster, I had to take a firm calm tone to him yesterday. Career limiting?

Well results came back from biopsy and didn't show anything, so today had to have a mammogram which I feel really bad about due to radiation that Bean may have received she kicked me half way through as just to remind me. Consultant is taking all my results to a meeting with other specialists on Thursday to see if any of them have any ideas and to decide upon a diagnosis and treatment.... Stressful times treated myself to a chocolate cookie and trying to peruade OH I deserve a kitten ha

Ziggimajiggi · 16/08/2011 12:34

Awww, H007 really hope you get some resolution soon. Sure it is nothing, but better safe than sorry. Big hugs to you.

So glad for the hospital bag chat. I was starting to panic about what to take.
I got some slimline maternity pads yesterday which aren't brick thick like some of the ones I've seen. No idea if they're any good though.

Fell out with MiL over the weekend about baby stuff. I know it's her first baby and all, but she is soooooo controlling about literally everything from names to nappies to sleeping arrangements to what products we bath the baby with (actually made DH promise we'd only use Johnson bath stuff). I really don't knwo how I ended up in this position. I give up!

Anyway, much better for rant :)

PMA - swimming tonight.

xxx
Ziggi

Ziggimajiggi · 16/08/2011 12:35

Meant to say slim line pads are from Boots.

Ziggimajiggi · 16/08/2011 12:37

Ooh! And Pam no stall last weekend, only once a month and then ad hoc orders in between. Thanks so much for asking! :)

Staceroo · 16/08/2011 13:22

Ziggy My MW said NOT to use Johnsons stuff for newborn as it's not good for their sensitive skin! Tell MIL to put that in her pipe and smoke it! haha!

Cookie So sweet with you walking baby around singing flower of scotland!

Thanks all for the hospital bag advise... off to check out the other thread now. (I spend so long on here keeping up I never look at the other threads anymore!) x

Staceroo · 16/08/2011 13:26

BuffyFan · 16/08/2011 13:42

H007 I'm sorry it's not clearer news. I can definitely vouch for kittens being an effective treatment for many things.

GTT all done! They said I'll hear some time this afternoon if there's anything wrong (if I don't hear, all's fine). So I am of course now checking my phone every 5 minutes in case I've missed a call.

Talk about the most boring morning! I wasn't as hungry as I expected, but sooo thirsty! I felt guilt with every sip of water I took. An interesting demographic in the room - a few who's reason for needing the GTT wasn't immediately obvious (not massively overweight, etc), more than half who were Asian (I think there's an increased risk of diabetes in Asian women) and one woman who was very very obese. All looking just as bored as I felt...

PamSco hope yours has gone OK today.

Well DH is making progress at home - he stripped the wallpaper in the room that will be the nursery yesterday, as well as putting up some shelves in the other room to house all our crap I feel quite guilty just going to work and doing my job, really. The rest of the house is a tip but I think DH won't be happy until he's got that one room sorted.

Caliphora · 16/08/2011 13:44

Ziggi Sounds like a firm "Thank you but f* off" is in order. That's too much stress for a pregnant lady!

Cookie If you're near your 28 week appt. they'll try and do them all then - 6 phials, so be prepared to lie down. But you'll be fine!

I'm starting to worry that I won't see a consultant now until after birth - the one who said I didn't need to see them was the one who told me to think "Happy thoughts" to get rid of my depression/anxiety. Not the best of medical confidence, there... How do I ask to see one before then?

Caliphora · 16/08/2011 14:04

I just stumbled across this - alternative baby onesies! So cute!

MooseyMoo · 16/08/2011 14:16

h007 finger crossed the mammogram results also show nothing. Baby will be fine, they wouldn't have scanned you otherwise.

ziggi agree with staceroo re johnsons. As DD had flaky skin (only 5 days overdue) we put olive oil in water. Just have to be careful as then v slippery! I've just discovered halos and horns shampoo and bath products and they are much more kinder to dd's skin than johnsons

Also re maternity pads, i had the slim line ones but didn't like them as they were not padded enough to cushion my stitches. Kotex black were the best for me and they are on special at lloyds at mo.

hospital bag I had 2 bags, 1 for labour and 1 for ward (me & baby). I was in 4 nights but only wore nightie. I did need DH to get more baby clothes and nappies. Was entertaining trying to remember where I had stored them!

Had my 28 week appointment yesterday. Everything looks fine. DD was fascinated when mw took my blood but cried when she heard the heartbeat (it was loud and she was in pram facing away from me). Was told to count 10 kicks a day. Mini moo already has a routine so I should know when something is not right. Generally get kicked morning, lunchtime & eve. If really energetic, I don't get kicked as much next day.

caz thinking of you & Jon. Have you two planned any time together like meals out, pub or cinema? Or doing something that relaxes you? I love facials and massages. Will book one soon for a little me time.

Anyone else tried putting a maltreat on their belly to see if baby will move it with kick?

MooseyMoo · 16/08/2011 14:17

Malteser!

PamSco · 16/08/2011 14:18

Ziggi I don't like to contradict but..... This isn't your MiL first baby it is YOURS! Your wishes and that of your OH is paramount. Smile sweetly, nod then ignore - I do that a lot!

I'm not going to use any soaps or none natural creams on The Baby for a good few months. My sister has used water for basic cleaning and a bit of olive oil for moisturising and her DD has the most beautiful pure clear complexion all over. I may look at some Green Baby stuff after a couple of months if they are needed.

Thanks Buffy GTT was ok. They never told me I had to stay so I didn't have any water with me and bored as anything. Managed to get 2 glasses of water out of them, so now I'm concerned the glucose won't have cleared as quick as normal as I normally guzzle water all day. Don't think I'll hear until next week when I get my growth scan.

Cali that's a real tough one. Can you take strength that they believe you to be dealing healthily with your pregnancy? You really are stronger than you believe - we all are. Tapping that strength is tough when you are anxious but is there.

I'm going to start writing my birth preferences today ready for the showdown next week. All good fun.

Hello everybody. I'm having a lazy day. I was going to cut the grass... but it's raining. What a shame!

H007 I'm thinking that no news is most likely good news, though it's inevitable that you will worry till you get a more definite answer from the mammogram!

Good luck to Pamsco and Buffy with GTTs.

Also good luck to Mr Voodoo! Hope he gets the one he wants... or even gets offered both, so they both feel they should up their offer!

I hated maternity pads. Found then very uncomfy, and was much better off with Always nighttime pads, though did go for the regular ones which have a bit of padding - no ultra in those long ago days! I also hate disposable knickers and found that a selection of old gray tatty pants which I was happy to throw away was much more comfy and finally got me to chuck them out! I needed several nighties (I second the getting them from Primark idea. I bought 5 at £6.50 each that button down). I found that milk leakage tended to make them like cardboard after a few hours. This is because I don't like breast pads . I found that because they are absorbant, they instantly draw the milk out, and then because of the plastic backing I was stuck with soggy pads keeping my nipples wet, no matter how often I changed the pads. This soon led to sore nipples starting to crack. I then ditched them and used very thin single layer seamless maternity bras. I found that if I pressed on my breasts whenever the letdown reflex caused a gush of milk it would stop within seconds, and although the bra would soak through, it was so thin body heat would dry it within minutes and the open weave meant that some air could get to my nipples to stop the rot.

I think we are all different, and will swear by different solutions so all we old timers can do for the newbies is to set out a variety of options so's they can use trial and error to see what works for them. I'd advise getting in at least two types of sanitary/maternity pads to see what works best. You'll be fussier in the first week when swelling is an issue, but happy to use up the not-so-good ones in the following weeks, and whoever said to buy lots is so right! Men always seem to get the wrong ones, and have no idea what is similar if the asked for ones aren't in stock, and we will be bleeding for weeks and getting through a lot of them!

What else? Never really understood what cotton wool balls are for when it comes to nappy changing - far too small to be any use in my view. Although I did use them for cleaning slightly gungy corners of baby's eyes, as you want a clean ball for each swipe so small is fine. I used a squirty can of saline solution meant for contact lens wearers to dampen the balls as it is handy, sterile, and the right amount of salt not to be stingy as plain water would be. I didn't use any nappy wipes (or soap in the bath) as we are allergy prone, and used either a roll of cotton wool I could tear big chunks off, or the large cotton wool squares out of Waitrose (with a picture of the most contented baby ever on the pack!).

Having looked at the opening post in the hospital bag thread, I would recommend buying another toothbrush if necessary, as I wouldn't want to rely on remembering to pack one at the last minute when in labour! I also second the bag #3 idea for a swapover if necessary. I'll be doing that! I think I'll take 2 bags into hospital. One for me, and the change bag for the baby for ease of finding stuff.

I'm huffing and puffing these days. Glad to see I'm not the only one to have put on two stone. Mostly in 1st trimester when I ate continuously, and was only sick twice, so it all stayed down! I'd hoped weight would now remain steady, but it isn't, although it's now only incresing by what it should be for the baby week on week. I was struggling up the second (narrow) set of stairs in my house with legs feeling like lead, and DD2 (who is an Imogen btw Poppet!) who was behind me said " FGS, it's like being stuck behind a tractor!"

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 16/08/2011 15:38

Totally agree with the Johnsons comment. Marketing spin to get you to spend ££! All a newborn needs washing in is water. After a few months, we started to use Johnsons top to toe, which is the only one midwives recommend as it's very mild. Almost 3 yrs on, we're still using it! DD has amazing skin and never had a patch of dryness or nappy rash.

And make sure you get the horrible maternity pasds (yuck) not Always/Alldays as for the first few days you need ones that don't absorb so well so you can see what you're passing (bluegh). I also recommend cheap antibac wipes for the loos I am ashamed that other new mums could leave the loo in such a gore filled state. No excuse. I wiped before I went and after (painful memories of first post c-section poo.....)

007 hope it all comes to nowt.

PamSco · 16/08/2011 15:49

Ew MrsA that's the kind of realism us newbies are currently ignorant of! As much as I find ignorance is bliss I have made a note for bathroom wipes to go in the bag!

OP posts:
voodoomunkee · 16/08/2011 16:31

Yep, wipes and hand sanatiser. Buy as many maternity pads as u think then some more. I preferred chunky for comfort as had forceps 1st time and the stitches hurt! 2nd timenot a tear but just for the bruising the softer ones were comfiest, I changed to the thin ones when the bleeding lessened. I'm going to secod the brand new toothbrush as u don't wanna forget as sometimes a wash and teeth brush can really perk u up. I've been collecting samples and freebies so don't have to carry too much bulky stuff. I wouldn't trust mr voodoo to work out what clothes or stuff I wanted so just going to pack as much as I can and label them all!

MooseyMoo · 16/08/2011 17:57

Oh yes, cotton wool balls were a pain. Beardy bum & foo foo for DD. Use the same waitrose cotton pads as knocked. Also agreed with knocked that we will have diff opinions to look after baby. It's all trial and error.

The main thing I had issues with is breastfeeding. I didn't buy a pump or bottles until we left hospital and knew we had issues. Got in-laws to go boots for us. I would suggest to first timers to research into pump & bottles but not buy yet. I know quite a few mums who bought before baby arrived and haven't used.

I'm also still learning to bite my lip when my mum and mil give opinions on how to look after DD. Current 1 is to get rid of eve bottle as I dont want to be feeding 2 babies. She loves it at mo and am not going to force her to it.

Urgh, just had to remove dead ladybird from dd's mouth. Gross.

SnoozleDoozle · 16/08/2011 18:34

H007 so sorry you haven't got a definite answer, the waiting must be terrible, but at the same time, as someone else said it definitely sounds hopeful that nothing showed up in the biopsy. And don't worry about baby either, they will have been very careful, knowing that you are pg. Its similar to the ladies on here who have been ill in their pregnancy and are worried about taking medication - when its necessary, its necessary, and they won't take any risks.

alicat10 · 16/08/2011 20:16

H007 - just echoing everyone else really, biopsy result is positive I guess so fingers crossed for mammogram.

Voodoo when will OH hear about jobs

GTT ladies - fingers crossed for clear results all round

Having an emotional week - one of my Mum friends has her DD in hospital with e-coli and complications with her kidneys - she's had platelet and blood transfusions so hopefully on the mend now. Very scary as it just started out like all other sickness bugs. Also our new niece was born in NZ last Thur 16 days over - heard nothing for days so were very worried and have now heard she was only 6lb 12oz and is in hospital as has breathing difficulties :( seems to be on the mend but it is so hard being this far away.

I have another growth scan tomorrow so looking forward to seeing baby Bear again and hopefully getting to speak with consultant. As far as I can tell he is head down but folded double - I don't really get the sharp kicks and punches I remember from previous pgs - feels more like wiggles and rummaging - all low dowm either side at top of legs - a bit like being pawed by a kitten!

Caliphora · 16/08/2011 20:27

PamSco I'm just concerned that the consultant I usually have said we needed to wean me off the medication before birth, and that she wanted to see me regularly... It feels like I've slipped through the cracks of inconsistent staffing... The midwife didn't even know why I was there!

Also, I'm not seeing a midwife now for a month, so I'm getting cranky. My GP is seeing me, but I don't expect them to have obstetric specific knowledge.

kate393 · 16/08/2011 20:32

h007 sorry things weren't made clearer for you today...you definitely deserve the kitten I think!
Thanks for all the hospital bag advice guys, have started chucking the odd bits in a carrier bag now in prep. Re maternity pads, loads of ppl have recommended the kotex (black pack)... But I've heard that normal st's are not good because of the plasticy top layer being sweaty and catching stitches etc? But most of the proper maternity pads don't have wings...surely this would be better? And will the slimmer ones be good enough initially? Oh the joys of birth eh?!! Wink
Have got quite a good pile of baby stuff now, finally started buying so feeling less panicky now! Although my argos order came today and they'd sent me some random bed sheet instead of the baby monitor I'd ordered...cue 10 minute phone call to customer services!!!
FiL has ripped out the old (and frankly dangerous) wardrobe in nursery now so we can put the new one in and bought paint at weekend.
Have felt a bit crap today and had weird flickery eye thing this morn which I'm sure was just tiredness but going to mention to MW in morn as have app anyway. Feeling much better since got home, had nice warm bath n slobbing on sofa with curry cooking...mmmm.
ziggi I heard same thing about johnsons as a few others have said. Water n a bit of oil if necessary is best thing apparently. I have a friend who absolutely swears by aveeno baby too so I've just got some of that but will just start with water etc I think.
Sorry for mammoth post!
