And we're back......

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
redheadbedhead · 04/08/2011 17:03

no i couldn't cook (still havent tried actually) or even do any washing up...the smell of the kitchen has been too much!

ghosteditor · 04/08/2011 18:25

I haven't suffered nearly as much as some of you ladies but even now the smell of a raw onion in its skin makes me go funny. I have to open the fridge at arm's length with my breath held too!

Foot is not getting any worse thanks cakes! Swelling is going down a bit so I think i'm on the mend!

knittiekitty · 04/08/2011 19:02

Glad to hear you' on the mend Ghost, that sounded nasty. I just got a window mesh thingy from Lakeland to try and stop being dish of the night for local flying horrors.

I've been googling teeth and childbirth and the only thing I've found is an American site that offers mouth guards that you boil and bite to shape in advance of the birth. Their research says that wearing the "Joy birthing mouthpiece" mouthguard can shorten labour by almost 40% Hmm. If it's that good how come it's not standard advice to wear one? The world doesn't appear to be full of toothless mothers however so I'll try and add this worry to my list of things to decide to relax about.

I can recommend Delia's honey spice cake recipe, I had a slither (keeping my sugar intake as low as I can) and could scoff the lot. Freebie apple crumble sounds even more delish.

debs39 · 04/08/2011 19:04

Just nipping on, will read thread properly later!! Came home from hols to find doppler thingy I had ordered from the www had came to my house and not my mam's whilst i was away...and of course I've been away so got to go to post office on my next day off to get it!!!!!

As it was, had a nightmare trip home with terrible stabbing pains around ovaries / womb so ended up going straight from airport to dr and then quick referral to hospital...

They listened to baby then I had to wait for scan...when sonographer was scanning me 3hrs later she took for ever and then said 'I can't find anything...'...but when she heard me gasp with horror she said ' I am looking at your ovaries to see if there are any cysts that would explain the pain...not looking at baby yet!!'

So, all in all, an eventful trip home....and yep they think was just round ligament pain worsened by sitting in airports and on planes for 15+hrs......

Panic over...for today at least......I am sooo getting my ££££s worth out of NHS with number of bleeding / pain scares I have had since found out I was pregnan this time!! 22 wks 3 days to go...and counting.....

Deesus · 04/08/2011 19:48

Aw *debs"...what an awful trip home! Glad to hear you're ok though now Smile

Has anyone else had lower back pain? I've got a little bump but didn't think i was carrying that much extra weight Confused Also I keep getting sharp pains in my bum the top of my legs. Seem to be spending most evenings lying on my side at the mo! Otherwise I'm ok and looking forward to my 20 week scan in a couple of weeks Smile

Conchita · 04/08/2011 19:56

makescakes am also looking into hypnobirthing. Still undecided as I'm a bit of a rationalist, but have spoken to people who've had good hypnosis experiences generally and heard lots of stories about women who've claimed that hypnobirthing has helped them. If anything it will just give me a coping mechanism as I'm petrified of pain, and tend to panic whenever I feel pain (I've cried during a smear test FFS). But the courses near me are about £220 so it's choice between that or NCT claases. I'd like the chance to make friends at the NCT classes but otherwise I think the course may make me feel more anxious, not less. I find the more I find out about giving birth, the more scared I feel. It doesn't make me feel in control.

redheadbedhead · 04/08/2011 19:57

deesus I've got exactly the same, some lower back pain, and a numbish stabby pain in my leg when i lie on my back - i think it's the baby pressing on a nerve having googled it in a worried hypochondriac fashion earlier

knittie I just remembered reading about mouths and their connection with labour recently - don't know if any of you have read Ina May Gaskin, but she's my hero. Anyway, she notices a connection between women who try and relax their mouths and the loosening of things in the cervix/vagina (sorry for TMI) - it helps your labour along if you can keep your mouth as loose as possible. I think she has some ideas like buzzing lips or kissing your partner etc that are supposed to help. I think she would say that biting on something would maybe have the opposite effect. Worth a go anyway!!

redheadbedhead · 04/08/2011 20:00

conch and makescakes I'm also thinking about hypnobirthing - either of you in London? I haven't found out how much the place near me is yet but I'm thinking it might be more than £200, it looks dead swanky Sad don't know if i can afford that AND a doula. in fact pretty sure i can't.

Deesus · 04/08/2011 20:08

I'm glad i'm not alone redhead Misery loves company! Grin I think my baby must just like pressing on things....my bladder...my nerves....

Seriously though I hope it goes soonish. It sort of comes and goes but is usually there in the background, sometimes it's very painful but it's mostly bearable. Think I will see how it goes but maybe mention it to my midwife.

I have absolutely no clue what sort of birth I want yet....I didn't realise just how many options there were! Confused Will have to start doing some research.

ChocaMum · 04/08/2011 20:12

cakes I can't believe your day, what a nightmare. I hope your car gets sorted soon.

fryn i don't know why they do it when they know all you want is some help to actually bf and you don't want to try formula yet. Yes surestart has been amazing for DD so hoping they'll still be around next January onwards. On sling side I had a bjorn handed down and I use to get really bad back ache withnit after DD turned 2 mo. I've been doing lots and lots of MN research and the wrap ones seem to come out the best for mum and baby comfort, so I got one called a sleep wrap. Like i said I even managed DD in it now which I was amazed about! And although your DD is a bit relaxed now, 5 months makes a huge difference at this age so you never know!

knitty I'm hoping being a more relaxed second time mum will help establish bf too, I'm sure it will. On the clenching jaw side I did a birth workshop the weekend before DD was born and it just taught lots of relaxation techniques which did make a huge difference. DH actually almost fell asleep at the workshop when he was practicing them! So I though this time I'd try a hypnobirthing course because I think it would help to do it over several weeks to really get the hang of it. Also it may help you with doing labour alone. I'm lucky in that my sis will come over to look after DD when it happens this time. Or I keep pondering over the home birth idea to make it easier on everyone.

With all this baking going on would anybody like my address?! Any leftovers are very welcome! Well done redhead for managing to bake after all the puking. I still can't even look at food let alone cook it. But home made cakes are acrually sounding tempting, may have to send DH out shopping!

I think mum2be mentioned monitors. I have to really recommend the summer infant zoom camera monitor. It is expensive but it is just amazing. To start off we had the angelcare sound and movement one which is also very good. It's just when the babies start getting a bit bigger they start moving around in the cot a lot and often sit up or stand etc, and when you can actually see them rather than listening to all this rustling noise, it makes a huge difference in not going in inappropriately and accidentally waking them up. The summer camera allows you to move it around the room from the hand held monitor and it has a zoom feature. We have blackout curtains in dd's room and you can still see her very clearly, and follow her round and round the cot (she's a very active sleeper.) It's just great enerertainement watching your little dc, and any visitors are always fascinated at watching DD sleep too!

Pumpkin patch sales are a great buy too, they are a really decent price on sale and they last forever, you can evern wash them at 90 and they don't fade or bobble at all. But obviously I emphasise sales because normal price is very steep. In fact I buy nearly all of dd's clothes in sales for the next size up. But sainsburys are fab and I have loads and loads of baby clothes from there.

ChocaMum · 04/08/2011 20:20

Sorry x-posted as I've been typing while going backwards and forwards to DD who is a bit unsettled tonight.

redhead we were told exactly the same thing in the birth workshop we did about mouth relaxing allowing cervix/vagina to relax. Also lots about generally keeping your pelvis in an open position in lastbtrimester and during birth.

conchita I was actually very sceptical about it all. It was a literally a couple of weeks before DD was due I started looking into anything to help me as I hadn't done nct classes either. And the relaxation methods really made a huge difference, I was 8 and a half centimetres when I got to the hospital. While I know inwould have probably got there at 1cm without doing what the relaxation techniques. They don't take the pain away, they just make you so much calmer, and when you panic pain feels a hundred times worse. So I think I will try hypnobirthing this time. From what I hear it is all about relaxing again rather than actually being hypnotised if that makes sense.

debs39 · 04/08/2011 20:21

redheadbedhead Am laughing so much at idea of kissing DH whilst I am in labour to try and reduce my pain!!!!! But hey ho if it worked for someone else, who am I to diss the idea!!!

PS please don't anyone go on ebay and start bidding on size 10 skinny maternity jeans.....I WILL be the winner r else!!

ChocaMum · 04/08/2011 20:25

redhead I am in SE London and planning on doing a course called calm birth calm baby. HTH.

redheadbedhead · 04/08/2011 20:28

thanks Choca but I'm in NE. there seems to be one in woodford...gotta look into it.

I know kissing in labour sounds like a freaking mad idea but I guess whatever floats your boat....I'm definitely going to give it a go Grin

ParsleyLion1 · 04/08/2011 20:33

Sorry to hear about the bad day makescakes I hope it's getting better.

Debs39 what a panic you must have had. At least they've checked you out properly to make sure.

I was sick for the first time this morning. I had a glass of water when I woke up and threw it all back up again after I brushed my teeth. I'm hoping it was a one off...

OP posts:
Conchita · 04/08/2011 20:43

redhead the course I saw was in NW1 and as I recall it was £227 for a weekend course, there were some other fairly central locations too.
Chocamum thanks for recounting your experience- good to know you found it beneficial despite feeling sceptical before.

Oeisha · 04/08/2011 21:03

ARGH! FFS! Just lost a bloody post. Upshot:

Still being sick, some days I'm fine, some days sick all friggin day :(

Re: bf. Your health/mental health is way more important than bf, so if it isn't working and you've done all you can to try then it's good to give up. I'm disgusted by how badly some mums are treated, by both MWs and HVs, to the point that I've known 'at risk' mums develop very bad PND as they're made to feel inadequate. Oh, and I'm also shock about how little HVs have to know before they're let loose on very vulnerable people. Used to work with HVs and it's a bit hit and miss whether you get a good one or a bad one! Either way, if anyone does something stupid like telling me to get rid of my cats as they're a risk, or trying to guilt me about anything, I'll be having their jobs...incompetent fools.

debs39 What a shocker of a day! Glad everything's ok! :)

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 04/08/2011 21:15

eek - too many posts to reply to but here are most of the questions answered I think:

  • My hypnobirthing woman is in Reading, I've heard many good things about her from women I've met at baby groups.
  • It's £285, but that covers all course materials and quite a lot of additional support. Most qualified practitioners will cost about that much.
  • I decided to do this instead of NCT because I can make friends at other baby groups (and have already) and at the hypnobirthing, but no-one else can make me not scared and not feel pain. Also I've heard the NCT classes can be rather pointless as there's no new info. Plus there will be other couples at the hypnobirthing course I can make friends with.
  • The hypno CD that was sent as part of the course has already helped me in several ways - for one it guarantees I get to sleep quickly and I am so relaxed about the idea of giving birth that I can enjoy expecting my baby. Secondly it was 2 days after I started listening to it that my nausea eased significantly. It may be coincidence, but it does have a section on the hypno track about eating nutritious foods for your baby and I think it helped.
  • The book that comes with the CD explains the theory behind hypnobirthing and why it can be almost, if not entirely, pain free. It makes a lot of sense and if you're rational and need convincing I'd recommend seeing if you can grab a second hand copy and reading it.
  • Hypnobirthing doesn't just benefit the mum, but also the baby who is usually more relaxed and sleeps and feeds better. It also, and this is important to me, gives the dad a very clear and definite role in the process and involves him completely.

Sticking my head round the door............ I haven't posted for a while. Can't believe it's thread 3 already!!

Hope everyone is ok and welcome makes

Nothing too much to report here but I am finally feeling human again and not under a fog of toredness and feeling nauseous.

We heard the heartbeat yesterday which is the best sound, I love it.

Today I went to work (I have to do two full day's in the summer hols I work 2 hours per day in term time) and there was nothing for me to do so I got sent home after an hour! My mum was looking after ds and stayed all day so I got to relax today which was so nice.......it's a rare treat with a 3yo running around!

mummyzoe2012 · 04/08/2011 23:23

Not sure about protein in your wee, but the Drs should have explained it to you. Good luck on Monday.

redheadbedhead · 05/08/2011 06:55

blueeyedmonster · 05/08/2011 07:33

Hope the doctor can tell you whats going on mummy it sounds awful for you.

redheadbedhead · 05/08/2011 07:48

hello again everyone - posted this morning on a new book club thread, but am thinking I might as well ask you guys as well and see if you have any ideas, in case the book club receives nada responses. I'm getting a bit desperate for reading material. This is what I posted:

Hello. Having been at home with morning sickness for two months I have got through a lot of books. And I'm starting to run out of ideas. My favourite books are by Jonathan Franzen / David Foster Wallace / American 20/21st century - but then again I also just read Caitlin Moran's How to be a Woman and thought it was great! And I love non-fiction books about the mind/brain/psychology ie Oliver Sacks.

I love quality of writing and usually my favourite books are those with complex characters and family situations.

Can anyone help me with some more ideas?? thanks so much!!

addictediam · 05/08/2011 08:05

Mummy were you on a maternity ward (pre baby one!) Can you ring your mw today and ask about it, just tell them your worried and had a few more questions after sleeping? There should be someone around to answer questions.
