And we're back......

OP posts:

I'm definitely keen on a water birth - in fact that's plan A! I just need to figure out whether to plan to do it at home rather than at the birth centre - still not sure about that bit...

ghosteditor · 03/08/2011 09:35

Oh, and just reporting back on last night's meal - it went really well; DH was thrilled; the food was excellent and the service was amazing (I'd go again just to listen to the friendly young sommelier prattle on about the wine choices - he was brilliant!)

Super expensivo in the end (because we both had the taster menu) but it will be the last big meal we enjoy for quite a long time, I should think! And DH really loved it so it was a good birthday present. They actually do a really reasonable set menu for £20 for three courses, so it wouldn't have had to be nearly so costly either. I highly recommend it (The Nut Tree in Murcott).

ghosteditor · 03/08/2011 09:41

and one more post this morning - I have a mystery ailment that I'm blaming on the pregnancy! I think I was bitten on the ankle on Monday night, because on Tuesday morning my whole ankle was an angry red colour and quite swollen. I've been using ice and (topical) anti-histamine but it has continued to swell and is now inhibiting the movement of my foot.

It's still very red and when I press down I can see what looks like an insect bite, which this morning started seeping clear goop. I do react to bites but I've never ever had anything like this, so can only assume that my immune system is going bonkers because of the pregnancy. I woke up at 3am in quite a lot of pain (think throbbing hot foot) so had to apply antihistamine and ice to get back to sleep. I'm in two minds about whether to go to see the GP - on one hand, it's clearly reacting very badly and the heat must mean there's a bit of an infection. On the other, the heat and swelling must mean that my body is fighting it. I think I'm going to leave it one more day and if it's still bad, see what the GP recommends. I have my leg raised at work and will ice it through the day.

But how random and gross is this??!

redheadbedhead · 03/08/2011 09:41

glad you had a nice meal, sounds great :D

I'm DEFINITELY going for a water birth, at home, sounds great to me! just wish it could be a jacuzzi type thing and I could drink champagne all the way through Grin

redheadbedhead · 03/08/2011 09:42

ooops x-post

eeeek to your gloopy foot!!

Fryn · 03/08/2011 09:51

I think a water birth sounds lovely - although with DD1 when we did the tour of the wards and we got to the birthing pool, the first thing the MW showed us was the sieve with a cheery "guess what this is for?"! I think once the penny had dropped, DH failed to see any benefit in it! As it was, I didn't have time to get in the pool when I got there.

Eugh to gloopy foot! Hope it calms down today - pregnancy does some weird things. I get mosquito bites all the time usually, but they avoid me like the plague when I'm pregnant, so I think it is all to do with hormone stuff that I don't understand!

Fryn · 03/08/2011 09:56

Meant to say knittiekittie - loved the socks story! (well, apart from being struck off). That's exactly the sort of story that would dissuade me from ever going pant-less/or wearing pop socks with a skirt.
choca and bun - I'm glad it's not just me who's sprouted long before I did in last pg. I've been in mat clothes for the past 2 weeks already (only 14 weeks!)
oeisha - glad it's all ok, but how awful. Can't believe the dr didn't warn you about that one. Grrr.

Capybara · 03/08/2011 10:04

Ooh, I've been to the Nut Tree! Lucky you Ghost :)

On a related theme, re. weight-gain, my OBGYN weighed me yesterday (I'm about 15.5 weeks) and I've gained exactly one pound on my pre-pregnancy weight. I look much fatter, at least round the mid-section, but I suspect I've lost weight everywhere else due to being a bit off food and - blush - no booze (!) She says it's nothing to worry about - apparently there's a lot of diversity in the rate at which pregnant women gain weight, and as long as you're eating healthily when you eat it doesn't matter that you're not gaining much (or even losing weight) She said that in all likelihood I'll start gaining weight later in the second trimester. Anyway, just thought I'd put that out there in case anyone else was worrying about it (I've taken to scrutinising my tummy first thing in the morning to see whether I can detect any growth :)

BunMyOven · 03/08/2011 10:10

I had a water birth with DS and would definately want to do it again if it's available to me. I can't say it had any pain relieving properties for me though, unfortunately! I found it a refreshing transition from pacing my room like a loon and it was lovely to take a bit off pressure off and allowed me to focus more Smile

Off to register with a new GP as we've recently moved - really gutted because I had a lovely MW that I would see everytime at the last place. Oh well, as long as this one isn't evil I'll be fine Grin

Oeisha · 03/08/2011 11:21

Just to warn you guys re: gushing she said it was a 'normal part of pregnancy, really common', rather than something specifially related to the thrush or pessary...though it IS more likely with thrush..so, if it happens to you it isn't necesserily bad...just get checked out.

I want a water borth if possible. Part of the reason why I chose Stockport...but from the number of women I see pregnant with wee-bumps in my area I'll be lucky not to be queuing to get in to the hospital (that and all the weird security checks the hospital is currently going through). I can probably cope with the pain, but water has always helped with period pain (I get it bad, people try and call me ambulances), so I figured it might be worth a shot as I'd ideally like to be drug free.

Capybara · 03/08/2011 11:41

Gushing?? Wow, that's something to look forward to :)

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 03/08/2011 11:58

Hello all, may I join this thread please? I'm 16+6, due on 12 Jan. I have my next MW appt on Monday and my 20 wk scan on the 25th Aug.

Just started showing this week, exacerbated by all the lovely maternity gear I have been sporting (thanks to Freecycle!) but not enjoying this heat much! Hugely jealous of DH and his icily air-conditioned office.

Hello! Fancy seeing you here :-)

Ghost is my EDD buddy and we're both in the same county, too, so are hoping to actually meet up at some point!

ghosteditor · 03/08/2011 12:41

[waves at *cakes]

ghosteditor · 03/08/2011 12:45

oeisha that's... unpleasant! Will hope to avoid the gushy pg symptoms - and all the more evidence that pants should be worn at all times Grin

I know you're all dying to hear about my gloopy foot Grin. I called NHS direct and had a lovely chat with a nurse about my upcoming scan before she advised that I should probably see a GP today about foot of doom. Mostly because the GP will need to check that I'm ok with oral antihistamines or possibly prescribe antibiotics, not because it actually sounds that serious. But the swelling does now cover about 20cm x 15 cm on my foot, which is the worst reaction to a bite I've ever had!

ParsleyLion1 · 03/08/2011 12:53

Welcome MakesCakes :)

Capybara I think I'm in the same place as you re the weight. I look big round the tummy and have a definite pooch but was thrown because I look fatter but weigh the same. Maybe I've had the same as you and I've lost it elsewhere to make up. I didn't consider that. Either that or it's just wind!

I quite fancy a water birth but I don't know if it will be available outside the birthing unit at my hospital. I will have to check with the MW as I don't think they will let me use the birthing unit as I am defined high risk. Though with any luck they will decide whether I am actually high risk nearer the time rather than just automatically lumping me in the "aged mother" "will be a problem" bracket!

OP posts:
ParsleyLion1 · 03/08/2011 12:57

ghost it might not be pregnancy related. It could be a specific reaction to whatever bit you. I once had to go to A&E with a bite on my foot/ankle because suddenly I could barely walk it was so swollen. They thought it was probably a specific reaction because I hardly ever react to bites normally.

I had to have the largest antibiotics I have ever seen Shock

knittiekitty - proper French knickers - dems de answer. I have a couple of pairs and they're very pretty, one's silk (got it in the sale for £3) and one that are cotton and silk (also bought in a sale for my wedding). Both pairs now mostly get worn when I'm suffering and in need of some kind of underwear (which, since I work from home) is rarely necessary! :-) Then you have coverage, but lots of air circulation...

GiraffeAHolic · 03/08/2011 13:34

It's too hot to be sporting a bump :) The walk to and from nursery this morning damn near killed me Blush I shall be picking dd up in the nice air conditioned car.

Welcome MakesCakes, I can't believe how many of us there are!

Definately see GP ghost oozy pus doesn't sound good Envy

ghosteditor · 03/08/2011 15:28

parsley you may be right - I just read about Blandford Flies (I think) that are common in my area and can lead to exactly this kind of reaction. I didn't feel the bite/sting but from the nasty oozing hole in my ankle it's pretty clear what the problem is!

I just got back from the fastest GP appt ever (15 mins from calling the GP to leaving with a prescription!) and they've deemed the swelling nasty enough to need antibiotics, which makes me feel a bit less of a pansy about it all. Hopefully the drugs will prevent another night of waking up fretting that my throbbing foot is about to fall off Grin

falabalamb · 03/08/2011 15:28

Choca, Red and Parsley, I can't compare water birth with with an epidural as never had an epidural but I will say that for me, being in water takes away all the extra pain and I was just left with actual contraction pain rather than the all over your body pain. It also stopped any pain between contractions, whereas out of water the pain was pretty much constant! It meant I could rest between contractions. I didn't give birth in water as dd2's heart rate rose and they made me get out, and I tell you, the pain when I got out and gravity kicked in again was much, much worse. I really hope I can stay in the water the whole way through this time round.

Oeshia, that made me laugh, I ended up in hospital when the exact same thing happened to me with dd1. I thought I was leaking amniotic fluid but it turned out I had thrush too!! Why does noone warn you Grin

Is anyone else still getting their BMI wriiten in their notes at appointments? 3rd time today I've been weighed and height measured for BMI. I can understand they need to do it once but I know I'm getting bigger and at nearly 17 weeks, does the BMI measurement really tell anyone anything!?

ghosteditor · 03/08/2011 15:33

falabalamb - I'm with you on that one - BMI is a dodgy measure of health at the best of times, but it's next to useless in pregnancy. I can only assume that they want to keep track of your relative BMI (before vs during vs after) but it baffles me why weight won't suffice for that purpose, since your height is not likely to change!

I just close my eyes and try not to look Grin

falabalamb · 03/08/2011 15:35

Wow, I posted and suddenly loads of new posts appeared! Sorry to hear about your foot Ghost. Welcome makescakes.

redheadbedhead · 03/08/2011 15:39

aaaarrrrrgggggghhhhh can i vent please?????

Took me 2 days and ALL MORNING to try and get my 16wk appointment (since I don't have a midwife any more and the GP has stopped doing appointments) No-one would bloody answer any phones!!!! and they can't see me til 18 weeks now anyway!!

And I haven't had any news of my next scan or my blood results. I wish i still had a midwife to ring up Sad

sorry - just hot and bothered and ranty. Angry I'm over it now....breathe....breathe....

and yes BMI is stupid fat waste of time!! like my morning!!!! aaarrrgh!!!

hope your foot recovers soon ghost!

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 03/08/2011 16:08

That sucks RedHead - what happened to your 'old' midwife?

Thanks for the welcomes, guys :-) Nice to have another place to chat in when procrastinating taking a well deserved rest from work!

ghosteditor · 03/08/2011 16:10

redhead how frustrating and sucky of your GP, I'm not surprised you feel ranty! Let it all out... (and then let go and be all zen for the sake of the bump Grin )
