A new thread for the bus!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

dont worry buballe they'll all come in. you will figure it out. just add socks, cardigans etc until you are sure they are dressed appropriately for the weather. i sometimes put a summer sleepsuit on isobel and just add tights if it is a bit cold. it will be fine. dont doubt yourself, you'll be fine.
its probably my fault for confusing everything! sorry!!!!!!

Leo4 · 07/09/2011 16:14

Bubalie Don't stress yourself out..you can put the baby in footless long sleeved babygros with or without socks..the short ones will be useful if the baby gets hot...although you probably only need to put vests under the babygros...This is my first baby...but I do have a young brother and my mum was very ill when she first had him so I had to look after him for a few months and that is how I know what is what...otherwise I would be clueless! O and if your LO doesn't get any wear out of somethings...ebay or bootfair it to get some money back or save for next baby!

Sassy To be fair I've bought a mixture of cheap and cheerful mixed with some relatively dearer bits..but I haven't spent vast amounts on clothes...Mainly because I don't know the sex!

Bubalie · 07/09/2011 16:22

Thank you sassy and leo - I'm sure I will use most of my clothes as the baby measures normal (although I feel massive, but am quite skinny normally and feel like I can't stretch anymore!). I haven't had any extra scans tho - so who knows, but i do hope that it's not a big baby..

I also have a younger sister and have helped look after her (12 years younger than me), but that was a loooong time ago! I've forgotten everything :(

sassy34264 · 07/09/2011 16:28

i said to my mum last night that this child is going to be the hsnd me down child. i havent bought anything at all clothes wise. but as i had a girl snd a boy last year, it seems daft to. to be fair its only isobel who has all new stuff as jacob has mostly hand me downs from sil's ds. although i have bought him some stuff as well. im absolutely shocking for dressing babies. i still have some stuff with tags on that where presents, cos i tend to just use sleepsuits for the first 6months. unless we are going somewhere, i just dont see the point. if im lying on my back all day, i'd much rather it be in pj's than jeans etc. is my lazy way of looking at it. so while yours are all in nice cute outfits mine are in plain white sleepsuits......poor children. Grin

right. im really starting to stress out now. dd1 is on her 2nd day of high school today. she has to get a school bus and she still isnt home. she was home at 3.40 yesterday. i think she has probably gone a friends house. but i am going to kill her.

Leo4 · 07/09/2011 16:32

My belly looks as though it is going to burst!! It is sooo big but I have excess fluid so might be why!

Yer my brother is 14 and a half years younger than me and this was 6 years ago ...and lots of my friends have had babies recently...so thats why I remember...

But although I know what I have to do, when an where....etc I don't think anyone is particularly 'ready' to have their first....! I'm so scared I'm going to be awful at it.! You can read a manual and know how to do something..but it doesn't mean you can do it!

BB3 · 07/09/2011 16:40

Hello ladies

Hope you are all ok.

Just on baby clothes - don't panic - the babies will be able to wear all of these things in the first few days as long as you have something that offers a couple of layers (e/g vest and all in one), hands (mittens although these are a nightmare to keep on), feet (booties or socks) and head (hat / bonnet thing which some hospitals insist on), you can mix and match to make the baby comfortable. I had DS in a heatwave and he was in a vest and all in one with feet and wasn't too hot I just didn't have too many blankets on him. And if it's cold you can use more blankets until you are able to get some warmer clothes from DP/H's. I only have tiny baby stuff which is up to 6.5lb - if these twins are more I will still put them in it (as long as they are not 9lbers) as they do stretch and fit until I can get some larger ones.

rebel any luck with annual leave?

Scheherezade are you crazy mucking out horses (out of choice!!!) - REST!!!

Bubalie you should be fine with newborn clothes so don't worry, it's unlikely your baby will be over 10lb unless they have warned you about it and if it is, it's still likely he or she will fit in the clothes and there will be lots of changes in the first few weeks so they will all be warn. Don't fret!! Also just ask everyone else to by you 0-3 or 3-6 so you can use up your ones when LO is born and then use all the gifts when they get a bit bigger.

Edward good luck with the potty training. I have given up and let him doing it in his own time as the more we tried to focus on it, the less interested he was!!

Cheshire try and rest the SPD otherwise it will be agony soon!

Just got DS from nursery he had a great time (i think) well he was pulling me in to go and see everything (although I was late picking him up as I got confused on times!!!) and was greeted with 'isn't he active' so think he has been keeping them busy!!!

BB3 · 07/09/2011 16:43

Crikey this thread is busy this afternoon, I missed about 4 posts while I was typing!!

Anyone brave enough to put belly pics up - I will if others do and reckon I will make you all look very petite!

Sassy does she have a phone you could call??

Mine will be in plain white Asda and Sainsbury's sleep suits unless we go out / have visitors as they are easier to manage!

Leo4 · 07/09/2011 16:46

sassy it's because you're experienced....unlike me who is in an idiot and am likely to spend stupid amounts on clothes the LO will puke on!!

PenguinArmy · 07/09/2011 16:48

wow, you lot are on a roll with posting atm

I was looking through DDs old clothes and saw that 0-3months went up to 14lbs, she wasn't even that at 9 months.

I've always assumed Nigel would be larger than DD, but externally I'm actually measuring smaller. I'm plumping for 7lb summit so will have largely 0-1 in my bag when I get round to packing it I have already put the same weight that i put on in total last time.

reflux here as well, started all of a sudden, but did sleep a bit better last night.

i was in the department when in labour last time finishing things, however the advantage of the PhD was that I could work when I felt like it. I found the pressure being taken off meant I was able to work till the end (although I took time off earlier in the pg)

sassy34264 · 07/09/2011 17:08

panic over. she had decided with a few friends to go and see her old teacher. school is very strict bb3 and they're not allowed to take phones.
we have new mums, 2nd 3rd and 4th timers on the sept 10 thread and even the 3rd and 4th timers post questions to us all. you can have 3 babies and not experience everything and then your 4th baby starts doing things or as signs of allergies, eczema etc and you havent a clue, so dont worry about not knowing things. im still muddling though some things. like- can i get them to stop biting each other? can i bloody hell! dd1 never bit ever. so no experience of what to do. sigh. the teeth marks can be horrendous.

sassy34264 · 07/09/2011 17:09

ha leo its not the puke you need to worry about- its the poo up their back!!!!! Wink try rolling a vest over their head when that happens. yuk

BB3 · 07/09/2011 17:13

Oooh sassy DS went through a horrible phase of biting - we just took him away every time and completely ignored it - took about a month to break - a month of looking like a heroin addict / battered wife with bruises all up my arm. Guess the hard thing is that by doing it to each other they get a reaction every time.

Glad she is ok - and oh yes, the poo up the back is a joy!!

bilblio · 07/09/2011 19:03

Wow, it's obvious people are starting maternity leave, everyone is posting now!

Got to go out soon so not going to scroll back to work out who said what.

Cutting feet out of babygro's. I did that Blush Not because I couldn't afford the new ones, I had plenty already, but because I didn't think she'd have grown enough for the 0-3 month ones to fit her. When we left hospital she was in a 0-3 month babygro and it swamped her! So how could it fit 5 weeks later?! I'm still cursing babybrain for that stupid error. It does mean that this LO will get some new clothes though rather than just hand me downs.

DD was a July baby, but it was a miserable July, even worse than this year, and our house is cold. She always wore a sleeveless body suit, and a babygro, with feet. We only had 1 babygro without feet, it was very pretty and she wore it over the top of another baby gro when we went out. So that's another option.

As for whether they're too hot, I always felt down the back of DD's neck to check her temperature, it's much easier to get to than the belly when they've got all their layers on. :)

This morning I dug out one of my maternity/breastfeeding bras from DD and thankfully it fits. This is good, because it means I don't have to buy any more just yet. But bad because I had lost 3 stone... so they should be far too big. Hmm My ribcage did expand lots last time, I bought these once it had shrunk back so hopefully that's why they fit... either way I'll be okay until a few weeks after the birth when I can get the energy to go shopping and buy some nice new ones.
So that's another thing I can put in the hospital bag... maybe I'll pack it this weekend?

traybake · 07/09/2011 19:18

Anyone out there stressing about their work load? with only 4 weeks to go and I haven't even time to think about the baby.Self employed and with no time off, this is not going to be easy.Doing a lot of crying (basically with frustration)and feeling guilty because even thats wasting precious time.

soundofherwings · 07/09/2011 19:30

I'm feeling slightly out of place on this bus now, looks like I'm headed for a September baby. Was up for 4 hours last night with contractions, just some backache and period type pain but couldn't sleep through them. They've carried on all through today, mostly painless but every 7-9 mins. And Tmi alert, but mucous plug gone too. Could this be the start of things? I've heard of people who've gone on for weeks like this!

Bumpsadaisie · 07/09/2011 19:34

To add my bit to the great clothes discussion!!

DD was 8lb and they reckon this one will be a bit bigger.

0 to 3 will be big on a 8lber but they still fit and do the job! Too big is still usable, too small is not.

I've got 7 bodies, 7 long sleeve bodies and 5 sleepsuits, all white, in Newborn size, together with one hat. These are all left over from DD.

I'm also going to get a set of three newborn boys sleepsuits say from M&S, plus two wool cardies in 0 - 3 from JoJo Maman Bebe. The cardies will be big at first but you can roll up sleeves etc.

I'm also getting a JoJo fleece all in one suit in 0 to 3 (though this will prob be huge on him at first, it will still do the job if he is in a sling/outside in pram).

When he is two or three months old then I will look at getting some pull on joggers/soft baggy trousers, some long sleeve tops/jumpers and some more bodies/sleepsuits in 0 to 3 or 3 to 6, depending on how much he has been feeding! I wont bother with anything but sleepsuits till he is a couple of months old.

I've got one grobag in 0 to 6 months (2.5 tog) which was enough for DD (could wash it and dry it in a day). I suspect he will be in that from about a month old. Until then I've still got a swaddling blanket and some nice cashmere blankets (if he's anything like DD though, he'll be sleeping on my chest till he is 6 weeks old and won't need much in the way of covers!!)

At the end of the day, you don't need much in hospital and DPs can always be sent out to the shops once you are at home, if there is desperate need (or indeed you can always strike out there yourself! with baby, pram and all the clobber. You can then marvel at how it took you 5 hours to go and buy 3 vests!)

Bumpsadaisie · 07/09/2011 19:39

Just to add further into the mix - M&S do a "1 month" size! Could this be the compromise solution we are all looking for!! Not so small as newborn, not so big as 0 to 3!

The other thing is the weight guidelines are not necessarily that helpful. You can have an 8lb baby like DD was - tall and skinny with very long legs, or and short chunky 8lb baby who never needs the feet cutting off but you can't do up the poppers!

DD wore newborn sleepsuits well towards 3 months but I had to cut the toes off because her legs were so long. They fit perfectly otherwise and worked fine with a little pair of Gap 0 to 3 stay on socks!

Jane4321 · 07/09/2011 19:40

Hello everyone. I haven't had a great deal of time to post on here, but I've just had a quick scan through and am glad to see many of you are experiencing/feeling/wondering many of the same things as me!
I have 10 more working days before ML, I'm desperately counting down, sitting at my desk is killing my ribs!

traybake Sorry to hear you've been doing a lot of crying and feeling stressed. I'm not self-employed so fortunately am able to write a handover for my replacement and just leave them to it. When you say no time off, do you mean you'll be working right up until you go into labour?
My advise would be, if at all possible, to grab as much time for yourself as you can - a nice bath with candles needn't take too much time out of your day...a walk...half hour of crappy TV...do you have someone who you can talk to and who can help you relax a little?

Penelope Leo My friend has convinced me to have a baby shower on 17th Sept...I didn't want one really as I thought they were a little naff, and didn't want my friends to feel as if they had to buy things for me/baby. But everyone seems really excited - most of them are child-less so say they love the excuse of going to buy baby clothes! I think they'll be having a few drinks on my behalf too!

Been feeling quite emotional this week, worrying about little things unnecessarily, getting annoyed with DH and snapping ... I guess it's the 4+ wees a night, and the general exhaustion I seem to be feeling at the mo.

Saw GP for 34 week check yesterday - he had no idea what he was doing, just kept saying over and over "hmm, all progressing"..?!

I was 32 cm yesterday - 2 weeks ago when midwife measured I was 31.5 - do you think it's normal to only have grown .5 cm in 2 weeks?

Gosh, long post!

Hope to be on here a little more when on ML.

Jane X

LittlePebble · 07/09/2011 19:43

Hey soundofherwings I'm sorry can't advise on how long it can go on for but how exciting! I'm sure you won't be the only one on this bus with a September baby so don't go! Keep us posted on how you get on fingers crossed it all goes ok Grin xxx

BB3 · 07/09/2011 20:03

soundofherwings ah you're firmly on the bus so don't worry about whether it comes in September or October! Im def having mine in september and sorry ladies but you're not getting rid of me now! Grin

My Dsis got her plug a week before baby but I'd say that if contractions are 7-9 mins apart and not dying off at all you're probably set for next couple of days!! Woohoo! How exciting! First baby here we come!!

Keep us updated - how many weeks are you now?

BB3 · 07/09/2011 20:08

traybake no time off pre or post baby? Is there anyone can help you out?

Jane think it's normal for growth to slow down later on as they are putting fat on rather than growing in length etc.

I'm very excited about the first babies coming!!

PenguinArmy · 07/09/2011 20:10

jane with DD I had no external growth for a month, but inside she followed her percentile

PenguinArmy · 07/09/2011 20:10

if it helps I scraped 30cm with some generous measuring at my 34 week appt.

PenguinArmy · 07/09/2011 20:11

I think newborn is effectively 0-1month, although watch MnS clothes because I think their sizes/weights tend to be a lot smaller than elsewhere

Jane4321 · 07/09/2011 20:35

BB3 and Penguin Army Thanks, that's good to know :)

Isn't it funny the things you worry about as a first time Mum?

I just stood in front of the washing machine for literally 5 minutes wondering whether I should add fabric conditioner (comfort pure) to the load of baby clothes that contains scratch mitts that I'm about to wash Confused
(Put in a little bit)
