Morning all. Re Group B Strep, I've looked into it quite a bit as a friend flagged it up to me. It seems like some areas offer it on NHS and some don't but they don't generally offer it at all without being asked. It is not tested for as standard as the risks of passing it on, even if you do have it, are pretty low.
As I understand it, it comes and goes throughout pregnancy so you can't test for it until at least 36 weeks, to see whether you are likely to be a carrier during labour. The concern is that you'll have it when you go into labour and it can be passed onto the baby - esp if your waters break early. If you are a carrier i.e. positive (I know a few people that have been and it's nothing to worry about) it's absolutely fine, as they treat you during labour with antibiotics - it's just a bit of a bind as it means you can't have a water birth I think.
I felt very strongly about testing for it as I know someone whose baby did become infected. It's a simple swap that's back within two days of testing. I paid to have it done privately (£32) as I saw it as totally worth the money. It's a personal decision though. Many that have it don't pass it on anyway and never know, but it can be serious for the baby if you do. I believe you can test for it right up until the end of your pregnancy as it comes back so quickly (you just run the risk of not getting it back in time).
Sorry to write so much, it's just that a few people have been asking and I have read into it quite a lot. I don't want to scare anyone though. If you do want to read more about it / do a test, here's the website I referred to and found really worthwhile: www.gbss.org.uk/.
Again, I hope you don't think I'm scaremongering, I just thought I'd pass on what I know and then you have the info. Hope it helps.
Teladi I hope you're feeling a bit better today. It sounds like you and I are having the same pre labour experiences! I've still got an extremely dodgy tum but feel fine myself so don't mind so much. DD tomorrow !! Fingers crossed it will be on time!
