I'm going to watch the Panorama thing tonight - got a vested interest as half the midwives on my team have left my hospital in protest at working conditions, and now I don't even have a midwife Sad

because of this, and other things, I've decided to hire a doula to help us out, so at least there's always someone around that knows what they're doing. I'd love to hire an independent midwife, but sadly the cost is prohibitive. The cost of a doula is pretty prohibitive too, but I'm so worried about the midwife shortage at my hospital that I'm fairly sure when it comes down to the birth, which I want to do at home, they'll say 'we're too shortstaffed, you'll have to come in to hospital' and the doula will be there to help me say 'NO!!!!!!! we're staying right here!!!!'

and just help me generally not be a scaredycat..

and show me how to hold the baby without dropping it on it's head.

and help my DH if he falls over in a dead faint...

emmyjj · 26/07/2011 09:35

Hi All,

Great to hear some us are starting to feel a bi better, though poor Oiesha and Redheadbedhead still suffering quite badly! I'm still getting the odd bit of feeling sick, but it's so much better than it was, though travelling still not good - I can be sick in the space of just a few miles unless I'm the one doing the driving!

Finally got sorted with some maternity clothes at the weekend - wasn't sure when to make the transistion but even pj bottoms/yoga pants were sitting a bit too snuggly. Had been managing by using bump bands and holding my fly buttons together with a hair toggle but it was getting so annoying - at the end of the day you are walking around with you entire flys undone and they just kept slipping down!

Good sale on in Mamas & Papas and Mothercare (2 for 1 on sale stuff), so got some chino type trousers and some leggings, plus some long vests. Also picked up a "going out" top from Mothercare, as have mostly casual stuff and thought it would be good to have something glam tucked away.

Also 3 for 2 in Mothercare on toiletries, pregnancy aids like support pillows etc.

H&M came up trumps for jeans - lovely skinny fitting over bump ones - they are literally so comfy! Haven't taken them off since buying!

Still no baby purchases yet, really want to hang on until after the 20 week scan/house move, but feeling like I'm ready to window shop so will probably go for a mooch with my mum one day this week or next.

Some good friends are getting married this weekend and then having the reception on our farm - am going to wear a non-mat empire line dress that looks ok with bump, and dress it up with a hat and heels. Empire line makes the bump look huge!

Anyone thinking about hypnobirthing? I'm thinking about signing up for a course, it's supposed to be great and as i want a home birth the techniques sounds really useful for pain management.

redheadbedhead · 26/07/2011 09:42

Hi emmyjj, I was thinking about Hypno too, and doing a homebirth, but haven't really looked into it yet as I'll probably explore all that kind of thing with my doula when we have our antenatal sessions. Will let you know if i find out anything, and let me know if you find a course and are enjoying it. Smile Anything that helps the pain and doesn't hurt the baby sounds good to me!!

redheadbedhead · 26/07/2011 09:43

oh and I'm definitely off to H&M to get those jeans, thanks for the tip! Have fun at the wedding!

abeautifulbutterfly · 26/07/2011 10:37

Yep, maternity clothes have given me a whole new lease of life! Now have 1 pair trousers, 2 pairs leggings, 2 new flowy shirts/tunics and a maxi dress, not strictly pg wear but beautiful and will do even next year when no resident tapeworm baby to explain away fat rolls Grin.
We are due off to Austria camping on Friday and DH came home yesterday with the report that near Graz, where we are going, they've just had their first snowfall!! Great!

redheadbedhead · 26/07/2011 10:57

pregnant camping in the snow!!!!! jesus!!! have fun.... Shock you're much braver than me. I've got to go to a wedding in Hungary in a few weeks and I'm already just worrying about getting on a plane and being able to eat the food in my sicky state!

mum2supercharlie · 26/07/2011 12:59

Hi all and congratulations, I'm due 16/01/12 with my second child. I am starting to think about double buggies, my son will be 2yrs + 2mths in January. Has anyone else been double buggy shopping or have used a double buggy already? I looked at the mn reviews quite a few weeks ago but didn't feel inspired. I can't use a Phil & Teds or other lower second seat conversion due to back problems. Plus I think my lo is far too inquisitive and would miss the view he has! I hope this is ok to ask here.

supadupapupascupa · 26/07/2011 13:00

i'm going to get the out and about nipper if we decide to get a double buggy. It comes highly recommended....

OP posts:
mum2supercharlie · 26/07/2011 13:08

Ooo thank you supadupapupascupa :) I have also heard great things about the o&a nipper. Thanks for the vote, last time I was expecting I knew exactly what I wanted and this time.....well I hardly get time to think what I want! I must have been really bored before I was a Mum!

Moobee · 26/07/2011 14:09

redheadbedhead - On the plane, make sure you take lots of snacks (and they have a sick bag in the back of the seat if things get too much). You could pack some biscuits too and I think food in Hungary can be quite plain so you'll be fine.

abeautifulbutterfly - I'm amazed that you're going camping in the snow! I'm planning on going camping next week but snow?! (P.S. I wasn't sure whether you were pleased about the snow?)

mum2supercharlie Hi! I haven't got any children yet - the whole subject of prams and buggies flummoxes me!

I had my 16 week appointment today and heard the babies heartbeat. :) It was great! It was about an inch down from my belly button and a bit to the side. It's pleasing to know that it's not just chubbiness on my tummy. We heard two or three kicks too - they're still active in there!

By the way, I was told that headaches are normal at this stage, but at 24 weeks and beyond, if I get a headache that doesn't go away with paracetamol, a pint of water and a rest, I have to go and see them, even if my last blood pressure measurement was normal. Oh, and I had had a dodgy blood pressure reading last week or so from a gym who came round to our office, but my reading was 107/70 today so perfect and exactly in line with my normal readings! All good!

She advised against getting a foetal heart monitor, she said as I'm not sure what to listen out for, it'll either case unnecessary worry or give reassurance when I should get something checked.

Thought it might be useful to share that.

addictediam · 26/07/2011 14:14

My fav double so far is the bugaboo donkey. It's a side by side and even turns into a single!

supadupapupascupa · 26/07/2011 14:35

addicteddiam very nice, but WTF £1,200????? you must be mental! (or very rich)

article

they certainly are popular though

OP posts:
redheadbedhead · 26/07/2011 15:05

£1200?????????? jesus christ.

addictediam · 26/07/2011 15:18

Actually all in its £1300

But, dd will be 14mo so I will need it as a double for at least 12-18 months then as its also a single I'll use it for a further year for youngest dc. then i can put it away and use it when (in the far distant future) I have anymore dc.

Also I bought a silvercross halo for dd, hated it then bought a quinny so I have both of thoes to sell and put the money towards it. So all in all for us it won't be that expensive...more like an investment!

supadupapupascupa · 26/07/2011 15:23

i am jealous, it looks really nice, just wish i could afford that kind of price level. Envy

OP posts:
Mum2be79 · 26/07/2011 16:08

Okay! I've just had to have a two-hour nap. What's that all about? I NEVER nap (unless I have a tummy bug like I did the other week).

I bought a silver cross classic linear (pistachio) second-hand when I was 6 weeks pregnant. It cost me £64 and is in excellent, almost new condition. Only the wheels give it away it's been used. Other than that, not a scratch or mark on it.

Bought a Winnie-the-Pooh book today. It's a counting rhyme book (for babies and toddlers) about bees. Very suitable as DH is a beekeeper.

I'm not buying any baby clothes, accessories or otherwise until after the 20-week scan which is 2 weeks on Friday!!

redheadbedhead · 26/07/2011 16:12

where'd you get your 2nd hand pram Mum2be? good bargain there, well done! Smile

re earlier topic of QUICHE - I've just eaten quiche and salad for lunch!!!!! this is a miracle. I feel close to human.

the better days are getting more numerous........... come on Oeisha we can do it!!!!

addictediam · 26/07/2011 16:20

Supadupa, don't get me wrong its not like we gave the money just lying around, were saving quite abit each month and as a result cutting back on other things eg nights out, food bills etc.

Well done red on rhe normal food eating! Today is a bad day for me. Im exausted so feel quite sick :(

Oeisha · 26/07/2011 18:27

So, I've managed to keep everythign down today so far...so far...a few moments that were very close. Lots of controlled breathing etc...
...but then I'm always worse late evening. I've gone for lamb tonight.
BUT I WILL NOT BE SICK. Positive thinking....

redhead My experience of Budapest was that on the whole food was great. BUT they don't always believe in thoroughly cooking pork (it was still pink very often) and they don't exactly trim off the fat. I found the food not exactly 'spicey' but warm...paprika, some ginger lovely warm feeling stuff. But, well, you can always ask if you're unsure about anything. Most places/people speak very good English.

Moobee good to hear your 16wk went well. Mine next week. I'm still awaiting my 12wk bloods and now my swab tests too...

butterfly good luck with the camping. I can't even imagine camping. Not sleeping well as it is!

ghosteditor · 26/07/2011 18:40

I second the vote for H&M jeans - I bought the cropped ones recently and have lived in them since. The full length jeans looked lovely but sadly they were too skinny for my calves (lots of calf-bulking sport in my life)

addictediam · 26/07/2011 18:41

Oeisha I just wanted to say don't stress too much about your swab results. Streap b is only dangerous if they don't know you have it. (I found out I have it during dd's preg) it will be ok.

Oeisha · 26/07/2011 21:22

Thank you addicted i'm not all that stressed about the swabs. Not like me at all frankly. Dr kind of indicated that the swab wouldn't just be for strep b but he didn't mention anything else, and I can't seem to find anything else, so, well, I guess I'll just wait and see. It's more that it's driving me bloody mental with irritation. They don't want me to use the thrush cream til we know what it is...
I've read up about strep B, and have elected for a hospital birth anyway, so, well, even if it is strep b it won't change my plans much.

No sign of pukng yet, despite a large dinner...feeling a little nauseous, but ok. Fingers crossed!

shonnomanom · 26/07/2011 21:25

Hi Ladies.
Its sounds like everyone is starting to feel semi-human again. And feeling the babies chapping at the tummy saying 'hello'. Fantastic!

Iv got my postponed 16wk check tommorrow. Soo looking forward to hearing the babies heartbeat!

Bugaboo Donkey - love this pram!! I put the lottery on in hope of winning enough money to buy this for my sister who is expecting twins. She wont be getting the pram from me Sad

Been feeling ok lately. But I am now really starting to struggle with clothes. Had to buy new PJ's today, I love buying new pj's!

Hope everyone is feeling better and happy x

Oeisha · 26/07/2011 22:01

Oh! Now I'm pissed. I emailed an NCT coordinator as I was interested in signing up to their antenatal courses, but had a few questions (costs etc) and this is the response I got:

"Many thanks for your message, Heather.

NCT antenatal courses are priced by the hour so the fee will vary depending on the format chosen by the antenatal teacher offering the course. Typically, an 18 hour course costs £159.00 excluding membership.

Yes, you are very welcome to take along a friend or relative or even attend alone, as many people do, if your husband is unable to join you for any or all of the sessions.

There are currently spaces on course 2A/C703, but I should make you aware there have been no other bookings yet so there is a chance the course will be cancelled if there is no more interest by early September. (If you had booked by that point and the sessions were pulled, you would receive a full refund.)

Best wishes,"

So, I'm currently reading into this:

  1. whoever does your class can fleece you out of as much money as they feel is appropriate...
  2. The classes could contain anything said person feels like including, as there is no standard...hence the ability to fleece you out of as much money as they choose
  3. Even if you have paid, we can just cancel on you and it'll be too late to sign up to anything else. (I've just noticed the Nov/Dec classes are no longer showing in my area).
  4. You get no help from their website that doesn't really outline anything in the classes, and is so very vague about pricing it's unreal.

...but on the plus side, we will give you your money back! Oh and I can take my MIL if DH is away.

Now, I know ppl that have a lot to do with NCT and family have attended NCT courses in the past and been very please, but is this not totally the wrong way to go about things...if they want to be seen as professional!?

Belini · 26/07/2011 23:08
