Hi there,

i'm so excited to have found this thread!

I'm due on November 12th...can I join? Wink

Folicacid · 25/05/2011 14:01

Welcome Ziggi take a pew!

Terry I said about getting a drier to dry resusable nappies as I don't want to dry on the radiators that we have. We don't have a drier now so currently have clothes horses up in winter which do my head in at the best of times (and I'm certainly no spotless stepford wife) Also when told people I was pregnant the advice I was given by more than one new mum was buy a tumble drier for all the washings of baby things- I suppose I'm adding in resusables to that. So that was my thinking around it...

Anyone else got heartburn already? I'm sore.

Folicacid · 25/05/2011 14:09

OOOh also, I've got a suggestion...

I feel like people have got fab experiences and recommendations for products and ways of doing things that worked for them, but it's getting a bit lost in the thread and it can be hard to keep up. Would it be a good plan to have a separate November 2011 good things what we have bought recommendations types thread where once we discuss something, any nice people who recommend anything could pop the details into a separate thread if they want to. So we can scroll through it easily?

stupid idea? okay idea? brillo idea?!

chipmonkey · 25/05/2011 15:16

Welcome Ziggi! Grin
Product thread sounds good, Folic!

PamSco · 25/05/2011 17:52

Woohoo hello Ziggi we are EDD Buddies! I'm the 12th Nov as well.

I haven't made up my mind about nappies yet. I need something OH is comfortable using Wink not that he realises this yet.

I think I'll start with disposal as I get used to it all but will try cloth after a few weeks just to see if it works well for us. I have awful memories of the pooh buckets when I was a kid, my sisters are 8 & 9 years younger than me. So double trouble with nappy volume.

lktoday5 · 25/05/2011 18:01

hello all ....16 week appt today, heard heartbeat :-) blood pressure silly low (80/40) :-( but generally all good ...happy days after the world of stress ...now ...if i can just stop eating ...

PamSco · 25/05/2011 18:09

lk great news on mw appt - though that is very low BP! Hope you aren't feeling faint or dizzy. Did they do more than one reading? I thought I was low with 105/60 and kept getting dizzy though I'm a big lass.

lktoday5 · 25/05/2011 18:12

hi pamsco, its always been low, although does seem to be getting lower, i do occasionally feel dizzy but normally only if i stand up too quickly ... i have to warn them all now so they dont ask the 'are you dead' or 'how do you stand up' questions (!)

juststarting · 25/05/2011 18:51

Why dont I get a 16 week appointment? 10 weeks and 20 weeks! And why when I dont get on the computer for a few days does this website tell me I'm not on any threads?
We used re-usables for a while. And stopped. Partly I got pretty ill and we needed to make things as easy as they could be, and partly we decided the environmental arguement was debateable either way, and partly we spent half the time using disposable anyway because we'd run out of the nappy covers cause my son leaked A LOT. And partly we did one of those things where a company come and collect every other week and drop off fresh - and they forgot to pick ours up. But either way, we bought a dryer having hardly ever used one in the past and now I would say we use it a good once a week in the winter. It was more when my son was younger and leaked more!

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 25/05/2011 18:59

Folic great idea about a separate thread for bright ideas/hints&tips. Off you go then, set it up! Grin

And I'm not looking forward to the joys of heartburn come about 20 weeks. With DD I was going through a bottle of Gaviscon a week - it really is the only thing that works (the liquid). I ended up simply swigging it from the bottle. Shock

Caliphora · 25/05/2011 19:17

Yup - swigging Gaviscon already. Bought it from a 30wk pharmacist at Boots wit hthe "It's the only thing in here I can actually take" comment and giggles. I get really bad heartburn without being pregnant, so I think I'm on for joy!

Had a weepy moment today when my mum gave me the best advice on my fear of birth. I never bonded with my mum very much when younger, and it just felt... Close!

OBEM - it just freaked me out - the pain, the tools, the hospitals, the midwives, everything. This baby better come out in time - I'm not doing the induction -> ecs thing! No way!

juststarting · 25/05/2011 19:22

Ah, praise be to Gaviscon. Though sadly gaviscon and ongoing morning sickness clashing somewhat. And yes, I too am having raging heartburn. Though I am prone to it when not pregnant to be fair. In my complete revulsion at the prospect of bringing Gaviscon near my mouth earlier, i tried half a glass of milk, only marginally more palatable, but on this occassion, in combination with twenty minutes sat comfortably, only marginally less effective.

bumpandisaacsmum · 25/05/2011 19:24

pamsco & lk hope your low bps don't cause to much trouble!!

mrsa yay for good mw appt, glad they are looking at homebirth as an option for you & that they are allowing you to use your home bp readings - I too suffer from white coat syndrome (despite being on the other end more often than not!!) my bp is normally low at home so get a "normal" reading at appts!!

folic sounds good with an additional thread- will make it easier to see recomendations clearly!!

sunshinehugs · 25/05/2011 19:40

Folic product thread sounds good to me!

I think I will use disposables for the first few weeks while I get used to the little bundle of fun before trying the washable ones. PamSco yes important to get something that the DP would be comfortable with - he is adamant that he will not change nappies (or watch baby eat when weaning) as he has a weak stomach, ummmmm, me thinks he needs to man up :o Does anyone else have that trouble? Will he just get on with it when LO comes?

About to watch an episode of One Born Every Minute, MooseyMoo they are repeating it on More4 on Sunday nights at the moment. Caliphora I found them difficult to watch at first due to the pain, blood etc. However, its really helped me as I have an idea of the sort of things that can happen and become desensitised to the more gory bits the more I watched! I'm hoping that will help me keep rational at the time! Maybe I should force DP to watch!!

cookie9 · 25/05/2011 19:59

Good idea Folic.
Glad your appointment went well lk. I have low bp too so know all about dizzy spells. I am waiting for husband to get home so I can have a bath as been a bit dizzy today. Still in pain and on bed rest. Yesterdays visit to hospital made me feel quite I'll so was up at 3 am taking pain killer.
Caliphora I am worried about the pain too as it is my first baby but trying to read lots of birth stories as I think the more you know what to expect the better. Our bodies are designed to give birth and there are no prizes for being a martyr to pain. Personally hoping for birth centre for natural birth but want option of epidural if just gets too much for me.
Asked my mum what she felt as was told I was a fast birth and not painful. Then asked what painkiller she had to be told didn't have any just an injectoin her back.......yes mum that would be an epidural!!!

Caliphora · 25/05/2011 21:04

My mothers brilliant advice:
"It always looks worse on TV. It's more hard work than pain, but obviously not pain free. You'll shout abuse at everyone when it's happening, but you make it through and forget within days."

As for OH's refusing to change nappies and wean LO's. .. Though luck! Sorry if it sounds hard but if my DP turned around and refused any of those two blaming his "weak stomach", I'd tell him he should've thought of that when he got me in this trouble in the first place, closely followed by "Man up!" and "Get on with it!". I'm sure he didn't have a weak stomach with bodily fluids etc when you were making little one?

Poppet45 · 25/05/2011 21:22

Hi all!

Well I had my mw's appt to check Bunnie's okay and bless her heart, after a warning at the start that 14 +5 was pretty early to search for a HB so it could take some time and not to panic, after a 10 minute search and going off to find a colleague she did find a HB! I can't rate my community midwifes enough, they're lovely. DS looked highly bemused while he played with one of the surgery's jigsaws on the floor, and a huddle of women searched my belly with a doppler Grin. Oh I'm another one who doesn't have a 16 week appt, just 12 week scan then 19 week scan - hence I wanted to find out Bunny was okay now and not have to wait til the end of June.
Well I'm one of those mums who used cloth and disposables. It really dosn't have to be either or, because any reduction you can make in disposables is one less nappy that takes a 100 years to degrade, although certainly from an environmental point of view cloth kicks arse scuse the pun as soon as you think about using second hand nappies and also having more than one child. By using second hand with a few new bits we got DS's first two sets for about £50! Go on eBay and there are vast numbers of listings. It gets bizarrely addictive and my DH became a cloth nappy evangelist with the other dads. We don't have a tumble drier either but I'm hoping DH will be building a lean to this summer for us to store firewood and also for all weather clothes drying. For those worried about leaks, getting the right nappy cover is probably even more important than any particular nappy and you don't have to use the same brand as the nappy itself. I don't know what other users thought but I always really rated Rikki Motherease, v v rare to get any leaks with those. And as for disposables, which we tended to use at nights because sleep became sacred in our house given DS decided not to do much of it for the first 16 months, I can definitely recommend supermarket own brands - Asda's are brilliant and tend to win more parenting awards than the big names. Plus they are much cheaper Grin. I found Pampers smelt v chemically and also gave him his worst nappy rash TBH but I think it depends on the baby. Also loved hte naturebaby biodegradable ones but can't get them locally any more.
And for those worrying about the birth. Please don't!! If things go wrong at the time it feels so much calmer and more businesslike than watching it detached on OBEM. You're in such an intense place you'll be surprised how much you take it all in your stride. Later yes things might play on your mind, but at the time you just get on with it. With DS's birth I got to try everything from NHS refleology to the high dependency unit, and you know what? There's a crazy part of me really looking forward to labouring again Grin

Poppet45 · 25/05/2011 21:25

And Caliphora, hear hear on the men and nappies pep talk!! Damn right Grin Once your DH has watched labour he'll be just fine to man up to a nappy.

MooseyMoo · 25/05/2011 21:26

Caliphora I was going to say they prob put the more 'sensational' births on tv. I'm still not going to watch it. I was quite happy with the obstructed view I had when giving birth Grin One plus of having a huge belly!!

Cookie Bless your mum!

Welcome Ziggi - how are you feeling?

MrsA Good for you getting your homebirth. Glad your appointment went well.

I went for a chiro session for the first time yesterday. Felt amazing afterwards. It wasn't until last night that I realised since giving birth I'd had a slight bad back and couldn't get comfy in bed (on my lovely memory foam mattress). Just thought it was coz my pregnancy size had knackered it. In fact it was my DH's enthusiastic massaging (with knuckles) in my back whilst in labour prob put it out. I hadn't realised how hard he had been massaging me until I looked at my back the next day and saw lots of bruises!

MooseyMoo · 25/05/2011 21:32

Poppy Glad your appointment went well :) Couldn't agree more re birth :)

Caliphora Forgot to add Dh and I worked as a team for the first few months when DD woke at night. One of us would warm the feed (I was expressing at this point) and the other would do the nappy. Could take in turns as bottle fed but my friend who breastfed made her husband get up to change her DS and bring him to her to breastfeed.

PamSco · 25/05/2011 21:42

Ok ladies, wait for it. OH has just been asked what his opinion is on him nappy changing, a quote for public consumption, his reply.... "You know my feelings it is woman's work". What I put up with eh?

All talk believe me he is an angel around the house and I'm the messy one. So I reckon we'll be fine Wink

bumpandisaacsmum · 25/05/2011 22:03

poppet yay for good appt news :)

cal I totally agree with you & telling DP/DHs to man up! My DP has very weak stomach (just mention sick whilst eating & he is of his food ready to vomit) so prob won't be at birth, though will be close by. But nappies are a different matter, he got told to "man up" when we had my nephew to stay & it was changing a wet nappy & doing the bedtime routine that cemented us trying for baby!!! Once he has the confidence in nappy changing he will be made to do a dirty one- he's not quite ready for that yet. Every time we're around my nephew everyone bullies DP into nappy changes, once we all thought it was just wet...turned out to be dirty, DPs respnse waas to close the nappy back up turn to me & say "this ones yours". Cue fits of laughter!!

bumpandisaacsmum · 25/05/2011 22:14

Oh amd anyone in Reading area, or willing to travel, there is a baby event 18/19th June that is free if pre-booked (or £1.50 on day). Not sure what exhibits will be there (haven't got it on website yet) but there is lots for DCs to do between the stalls!!

Folicacid · 25/05/2011 22:21

hokey hokey hokey roll up roll up

Recommendations thread has been started here:

Staceroo · 25/05/2011 22:23

Evening all!

My dh thinks he's getting out of nappy duty, but I don't really mind as he is cheif incharge of poops when we go dog walking! So probabably a fair trade (until I heard that babies go 8 times a day!)

Sunshine I like watching OBEM for the same reason. Dh thinks I shouldn't watch it as it will scare me, but I actually think it's great because it prepares me for the things that could go wrong, and to know that they're not always the end of the world!

Ziggy and Pam snap on the due dates! 12th November!

Juststarting if the thread disappears after a few days you can change your settings so it remembers them for longer, or what's even easier is to click watch at the top!
