Thought I'd take the plunge and go for it.

Folic why do you think you would need to use a tumble drier? I don't have one and all my nappies are dried on radiators or airers and on the line in the summer. I don't think you need to dry them, especially as it negates some of the environmental benefit but it does mean you need 2/3 days worth of nappies as some do take a full day to dry (if not on a warm radiator).

busyboysmum · 24/05/2011 12:40

If you fancied trying reusable nappies why don't you see if your local council has a free trial scheme? My local council Trafford had one when I was pregnant with my first son - you got the first month of a laundry type service free - there was no obligation to carry on with it and in fact I didn't as I found them too big for a delicate newborn. Just my personal experience and I might try them again this time maybe from 2 months or so.

I am having the sensual dreams still, its lovely, and my hair is really thick and growing really fast - anyone else? On the down side, I have put on at least half a stone already and I did think you weren't supposed to put any weight on yet, ooops! I am just hungry all the time though and can't deny myself - I seem to remember this happening in my other 2 pregnancies and I always end up about 2 stone overweight after the birth.

busyboysmum · 24/05/2011 12:42

This might help for the free trial:

There seems to be a list of places who offer it.

Bluetinkerbell · 24/05/2011 13:40

busyboys thanks for that link! I'm starting to change my mind and thinking of using cloth nappies now Wink it is just knowing which one will suit you best and where to start. I liked the price of the Econobum birth to potty kit, which is only £120.

bumpandisaacsmum · 24/05/2011 17:20

It largely depends on the type of washable nappies you get as to drying time etc, the ones I had (can't rememer the name but made from bamboo fibres instead of cotton) would largely dry overnight without trouble!! If you are unsure as to whether you want to go washable then it is worth checking out if there are any local companies that "rent & launder" you get to try them without the outlay of buying them!!! I would recommend going to smaller boutiques rather than large stores (e.g mothercare) to look at & discuss the different types & what would suit your lifestyle - I found the people at the 'one off' stores far more informative of the practical aspects as opposed to the spec!!

Was taken aback at work today, was chatting to a patient & my stomach rumbled (embarrassing as it was only 10am) I appologised as hadn't put a snack in the car - we chatted about how we need to listen to our bodies etc & give it what it wants (my advice to her last week re: rest) then she turned round & asked when I was due Shock it has been the first person who has asked who hasn't been told I am pg!!!

TwoJackRussellsandabean · 24/05/2011 17:35

Afternoon all,

cookie, hope you are feeling better, was supposed to be away for a long weekend this one coming and with the ash cloud Glasgow is mostly closed so made the decision to cancel what we could to get our money back and bin off our time in London till later, bit gutted though was really looking forward to it Sad hopefully your mum will be able to get down to see you soon, the flights might be on in the next couple of days.

I always expected that I would use reuseable's but haven't really done much more about it at the moment, have arranged to buy a friend's travel system buggy thing, would have liked to buy new, but can use the rest of the money for a cot bed :)

CazandBelle · 24/05/2011 19:17

Had a mw appointment today and got to hear Bows little heartbeat. Really magical.

Hope you're feeling better cookie

chipmonkey · 24/05/2011 21:59

OK, I am now going to get some of you hooked on reusables!

Check out these! That's my favourite cloth nappy site. Now that's not all I have as they are pricey, I also have a lot of coolababies mainly for nursery as I don't want my nice ones going missing.

wrt drying. I have found that for pocket nappies, microfibre nappies dry the quickest and bamboo is much more absorbent but takes ages to dry. I try not to use the dryer but as I have four kids and work FT, I do sometimes use it in an emergency.

No naughty dreams here.Sad Weird ones but not smutty at all.

Caliphora · 24/05/2011 22:21

Just watched One Born Every Minute, and now seriously considering getting DP to bat me over the head repeatedly during labour so I'm not awake for it.

What have I gotten myself into?!!?!

Bluetinkerbell · 24/05/2011 22:27

so have often do you wash the used ones? every day? do you just stick them in with other clothes or wash them separately?
it is the cost of getting them initially that is putting me off at the moment, and the thought of having to use our very noisy washing machine more often...

SnoozleDoozle · 24/05/2011 22:31

I'm all amazed at how much interest there is in reusable nappies now - when I had DD five years ago, I had never come across anyone else who used them. I must be such a trendsetter, because they seem to be much more popular in my area now Wink

Another thing about them that I don't think I mentioned in my earlier post was that I found that DD never got nappy rash in reusables - the only time she ever got nappy rash was in disposables, particularly when she was very young. My reasons for using them weren't really environmental (although having read a fair bit of research on the topic, I think that the argument about disposables being better for the environment has been pretty discredited now) but I am really icky about putting chemicals on DDs skin, and the gel stuff inside nappies gives me the creeps. Although, having said that, I am a hypocrite too, because I used them on holidays and suchlike.....my principles were not so strong that I would attempt to drag nappy washing paraphenalia on hols !! Blush

chipmonkey · 24/05/2011 22:33

I keep them in a nappy bucket and wash them separately every other day or sometimes every third day. With ds3, I started off with eco-disposables and gradually bought the cloth nappies one by one. I found this better than getting a huge birth-to-potty set as you got to try out one and see if you liked it before buying a lot. I did make mistakes ( Kushies, anyone?) but ended up with a collection I was happy with.

chipmonkey · 24/05/2011 22:37

Snoozle, ditto re the nappy rash.
Ds1 and ds2 were in disposables and ds1 used to sometimes get horrendous nappy rash. I never, ever thought to blame the disposables, but ds3 and ds4 have never had anything like the rashes he used to get.

I have brought my cloth nappies on holiday but only where there were decent laundry facilities. In Center Parcs in France, the ladies in the laundry actually washed my "couches lavables" for me!

Caliphora · 24/05/2011 22:46

As we are by-passing the fears of childbirth - has anyone tried the Mothercare system? The starter set is £39.99 - very affordable imo, but not worth it if they're poo (pun oh so intended)

chipmonkey · 24/05/2011 23:32

Haven't tried the latest mothercare system but any previous ones of theirs that I tried were rubbish!

Ds1 at 14 is not impressed at me discussing the comparative state of his bum to his brothers' bums on t'internet!

chipmonkey · 24/05/2011 23:37

Oh, by the way, whoever said they were still sick ( sorry have scanned thread and still can't see who!) Join the club. I am still puking most days and have nausea when I'm not puking. I am currently lighter than I was pre-pregnancy which is probably no harm anyway but I am getting fed up of it!

TerrysNo2 · 25/05/2011 00:25

Ditto on nappy rash - never in reusables for DS.

As for buying nappies I would echo chips suggestion of buying one by one as there are so many out there and some of them aren't very good or might not suit your LO so this is a really good idea. I have tried Tots Bots, Blueberry, Itti Bitti, Bambooty and more I can't remember but I now stick mainly to Itti Bitti's - they just suit me but to start I bought one of each and then bought more of the ones I liked and sold the others. There are lots of places online to buy/sell used reusables so its not so bad if you change your mind.

TerrysNo2 · 25/05/2011 00:28

Oh and when we go away anywhere overnight we use Nature Babycare nappies - sometimes convenience wins over conscience! Smile

PamSco · 25/05/2011 00:32

Hey chip I've list 10lbs since I got pg. Mostly due to sickness and what I can eat has been mostly healthy. Still spewing thanks to bad cold.

PoppysMom · 25/05/2011 02:57

I am losing weight still as well, but none of my clothes have fit for the past 8 weeks!! How does that workConfused?

I do have a very noticable bump as well, so not sure where the loss is

I also still have nausea on and off. Only actually been sick twice

bumpandisaacsmum · 25/05/2011 06:53

Ditto here for nausea & still being sick :( although for m the actual being sick has reduced considerably to only 2-4 times per day!!

I'm currently having to balance eating enough to prevent sickness & not eating to much to prevent sickness!!!

I'm a healthy weight though lost about a stone between discovering I was pg & booking appt, then lost a few more pounds all due to ms :( think my weight is slowly going back up but still not at pre-pg weight, my diet currently based on a lot of granary bread & potato with fruit!! Veg I have to almost sneak in but often = ms which is really frustrating as I love my veg & salads esp but caanot eat them atm.

Am just thankful I'm not poorly on top, hope you feel better those that are/ have been.

I agree with the try one at a time with different nappies to find the one that suits you! Although I would say if there is anything that you are able to tru before spending the money it is worth it (thankfully I had quite a few bits given/leant to me with DS which meant I could try something & if I didn't like it find an alternative which didn't have the aspects I didn't like- it saved a lot of time & money!!

PamSco · 25/05/2011 07:47

Bump I know what you mean about salad, my tummy turns at the thought of lettuce. I set up a salad garden about 2 mths ago as well.

MooseyMoo · 25/05/2011 09:31

Am I the only one using disposables?!? We don't have a dryer, not a lot of space to dry nappies (and don't like drying clothes on radiators) and would have thought the cost of using the dryer to dry them would be just as bad as using disposables.

I really wanted to use reuseables but just too much effort when DD first born. My DD only gets a slight red bottom when she is teething but no nappy rash any other time. Pampers Baby dry are absolutely amazing. I now use these at night and Pampers active fit in the day.

Caliphora I've never watchd OBEM so what was shown that has freaked you out?

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 25/05/2011 09:47

Morning ladies.
Just popping in to catch up. I had a fabulous mw appt on Monday. After all my fears, she was happy that the consultant, whilst not supporting a homebirth (as I fully expected her not to) she had said as long as I know the risks and I have support from my local mws, it should be fine.
My local mws are very pro-homebirth and the biggest issue for me is blood pressure. It rockets in hospital (like 160/105 etc) but at home, it's perfectly normal. Today for example, it was 117/75. Well, as I've invested in a home bp monitor, the mw will use these readings to support my normal bp, and the upshot was that provided nothing goes wrong, it looks like I'm on track for my homebirth!!
On a high.

Oh and whilst I support the idea in principle of reusable nappies, I used disposables on DD since she was born. I don't beat myself up. the environmental impact of both types of nappies are more or less the same due to the energy use for washing nappies, and for us, disposables are fine and DD has never had nappy rash ever.
She started off in the super cute pampers new baby and is now out of nappies in the day and only in pull ups at night. We didn't go onto active fit and stayed with pampers baby dry as I felt active fit were a marketing ploy as they cost more. DD was fine staying in baby dry - only ever reached size 4+ bless her, and at almost 3 she wears size 4 pull ups. She's weeny!

Whilst I was lucky enough to not to be sick, I still occasionally get nauseous/no appetite if I haven't eaten.
I've not lost weight but not put any on but I was big to start with Grin

Staceroo · 25/05/2011 13:23

Where to start, it's been a while!

Have been really bust at work etc the last few days, but reason for not coming on is more because when I do get home, really enjoying sofa time with DH at the minute (awwwww....)

I've just read through the last 6 pages or so to catch upm so forgive me for not remembering wo said what!

Re maternity leave, I'm going to work right up to 39 weeks if I can, want as much time with baby as possible! And the last three weeks of work, I'll be at a client close to home anyway!

I've not put on any weight yet, though I keep fluctuating between 8st3 and 8st7, but none of my clothes fit me any more! Like someone mentioned above, I've got a fat belly, but not sure where ive lost the weight from elsewhere!

I got a couple of pairs of maternity trousers from New look, but agree the choice everywhere is pretty crap!

I'm set on using reusuable nappies! Not sure why, just can't stand the thought of throwing so many in the bin! DH and I pride ourselves on one bin liner of rubbish every 2 weeks, so don't want that to change when baby comes!

MrsA I think it's brilliant you stood up to your drs etc about home birth and will hopefully get the home birth you want! Grin

Well must crack on with work, wish me luck for Race for Life tonight! Under strict orders from my mum not to run though! So a brisk walk/light jog it is!
