Just watched 'The woman who gave birth in a concentration camp'. She said she survived that and the aftermath because "a mother's love is the most powerful force in the world". I can't wait to feel that (is already v strong), SOB!

I'm with LadyG/medee - I think changing bags are a bit of a waste of money and it's just yet another thing they make mums feel like they need. We inherited one and hung it over the back of the pram and I realised I was taking out (for a 90 minute stroll) half the fucking baby paraphenalia. You don't actually need to take sudocreme when you go to the shops! Wink These days I do a LadyG and I have a slimline nappy-wipe box (free with last month's practical parenting magazine, just the width of a cigarette box I suppose) and a couple of nappies depending on duration of excursion. At first you will change the baby every time it pukes - after time you'll just wipe unless it's a poo explosion beyond all poo explosions, at which point you'll find yourself ditching clothes at Edinburgh Airport, I digress. Then there's a toy attached to the straps of his buggy and if he needs to eat then I'll put a bottle/food in the shopping basket of the buggy. If we're doing a trip out for an entire day then I'll pack more, but seriously, if you're just going to Tesco/cafe/walk in the park you really don't need to take much - if it's that bad you're going to head for home anyway.

Muser · 20/04/2011 07:59

I have a changing bag now, but only because my big handbag broke and I liked the changing bag more than any other bags. Otherwise I agree with Alps. And as I've been using the sling a lot I mostly just use a really dull rucksack.

CluckyKate · 20/04/2011 08:18

Yep - Alps is right and any old bag'll do. I bought this which holds nappies & wipes and is all you need for changing purposes.

PerfectDromedary · 20/04/2011 08:21

I bought a changing bag because it had Velcro straps that would stick properly on the buggy. I'm using it more as handbag than anything else, as Berwhale isn't a very pooey or pukey baby so the need to carry four sets of cloths/seventeen muslins etc is pretty non-existent.

If I'm only heading out for an hour, I bung a nappy, house keys and wallet in the front pocket of the sling and head out the door. Yay for portable baby age. I suspect that gets tricker as they get older...

Medee · 20/04/2011 09:31

I got that free wipe box too, though I haven't actually brought it into use. Our changing bag has about 3 x nappies, some wipes, nappy disposal bags, and a mini pot of sudocreme from the Bounty packs. Plus full change of clothing, and a spare blanket. It also had my nipple shields while I was still using them, and if you are FF then you need to carry the bottles etc for that.

And sorry, remiss of me, but Happy Birthday to the birthday PESH's for yesterday.

AlpinePony · 20/04/2011 09:34

medee Practial Parenting is my favourite of all the condescending parenting literature.

laurielou · 20/04/2011 09:55

I got sucked into the changing bag thing & ordered a black & green one to match the pram Blush. Even as I was ordering it, I knew I was going OTT, but Mr Loz had his credit card out & I went a bit bonkers. I don't think he really noticed the pointless bag in amongst the pram, car seat, cot, wardroble, chest of drawers with changing table etc, etc.

Well, my little friend head mole is no more. GP whacked a needle in my noggin which wasn't the best thing I've done on a Tuesday afternoon, dug the blighter out & burnt the rest for good measure. I'm now sporting a clump of stubble on the back of my head, so have engineered some kind of comb over display. He was a lovely, if barking GP. Told me it wasn't a brain cell, so not to worry. Also said I'd smell of roast pork as he was burning it. Then said if I could cope with that childbirth would be a breeze Grin.

Mum - bless her & all her craziness - said in all seriousness "See, after the anaesthetic you didn't feel a thing. So if you do need a c-section......" Thankfully she had the good sense not to finish the sentence when she saw my Shock face.

My lovely work colleagues are determined to make me cry in front of them. Nearly worked...... they've now just presented me with a baby bath filled with all manner of toiletries (which I may have to try out first) & the all important bag of nappies! Woo hoo - Mr Loz & I didn't know where to start with them. So I'm sitting at my desk with wafts of Johnson baby goodness filling my nostrils.

To top it off, I'm being taken out for coffee & cake again at lunchtime. In the sunshine. Does it get much better than this Grin

LadyGoneGaga · 20/04/2011 11:00

Lovely, Loz. I bet you cry on last day.

There is great excitement in the office today because a family of travellers/gypsies have set up camp on our car park. They look quite bedded in. Have not spotted any ginormous dresses yet but will let you know if this changes.

LadyGoneGaga · 20/04/2011 11:00
Scorpette · 20/04/2011 11:21

Can I come and work at your place, Loz? They sound bloody brilliant! But you deserve it :) Glad your mole could be removed. A bonkers Doc can sometimes make things easy to deal with! Your mum sounds like she went to the same charm school as my Dad, heheh.

I want a changing bag because I need a new handbag anyway and bloody love bags and am getting a classic handbag-style one. Not spendsy, as I couldn't afford one even if I wanted, but a decent, stylish one. I've not pampered myself at all during the pg, as have felt too ill to do owt like a babymoon or even day trips or a facial and have bought very few maternity clothes, so I feel justified in getting myself a nice bag.

Well, I am 36 WEEKS TODAY! If this was Oct 1972 and I was my Mum, I would already be in hossie in early labour with me Shock Am official nervous from today on in Grin

OP posts:
Scorpette · 20/04/2011 12:31

I'd like to point out that I never had massages, pampering treatments or fancy days away before I was pg, but the lack of them now is my excuse for a bag, mmmkay? Blush

OP posts:
laurielou · 20/04/2011 14:13

Scorps I may moan, but I'm lucky with my job & colleagues. Just don't tell them I told you that Grin

I am nervous on your behalf regarding your mum being in labour at this stage. Bloody hell!

I don't blame you treating yourself to a changing bag. I'm a bit of a shoe & bag whore myself. However I have also treated myself to some massages, day trips & a babymoon Blush. Whoops, I sound a bit high maintenance, don't I?

I meant to say, I too am suffering a bit with the stiff (fnar) knees. And fingers. I think the swelling on my feet has travelled to all of my joints. Most of the time it doesn't really bother me too much, but then yesterday I could hardly get my sausage fingers to bend & hold a pen. I'm hoping that when I finish work I'll actually be more mobile than sitting on my arse behind a desk all day, so the swelling should ease. Of course, in reality I'll prolly spend all day on the sofa in pj's just swelling & slowly seizing up.

AlpinePony · 20/04/2011 14:18

loz You are a shopaholic! Grin So glad all is going well and your colleagues sound lovely!

LadyG We have some travellers live near us - they seem to like us - dogs, horses, babies. :) Haven't seen a ridiculous dress yet but will lavish with praise when I do so I can wheedle a go on their horsebox! Grin

macaroonmum · 20/04/2011 14:33

scorps I gave birth to Thechild at 36+5

I have a small-ish changing bag which came with the buggy and which is fine but agree with the others that they aren't really the most useful thing ever - I am going to get one of these to chuck randoms in.

Muser That's PERFECT! Thank you so much - it's exactly what i was looking for! I might get the olive green one... or the blue one... or both....I will certainly dribble ice-cream or something down the cream one so that's out. I'm think the smaller one will fit without having too much extra length to tuck in, but am also wondering if it's work for TIS. Might have to get one in each colour in each size just in case Wink

Laurie What loverly colleagues. And you are just right to treat yourself to nice things because it's very difficult to do it guilt-free when baby is here, and that's when you have the time to do it. I regret not doing it enough when I had the time but am hoping that I'll manage it again in a few years' time! Glad mole has been sorted without issues too - lol at your mum's comment!

Scorpette · 20/04/2011 16:03

As if reaching my Mum's birf milestone wasn't scary enough, I've been having a v weird pain (really intense and agonising - was shrieking with the intensity) at the top of my bump (not spasms or tightenings, though - rang MW and she is stumped), plus lots of back ache and generally feeling weird, so am a bit waargh, even though I logically know it's probably just trapped wind or a gripey tum! I just hope the pain wasn't the baby turning breech, grrr.

Mac, you sound my kinda gal - more worried about what you will spill on a sling than the baybee Grin Slatterns unite!

On the bag front, have had excellent news - the swanky one I actually wanted is reduced to half price and is basically same price now as the 2nd choice one I was going to get instead, huzzah! The bad news is, I have just checked my bank balance... Sad

Am going to try to chill with my hippo CD. I fall asleep within 3 mins of it being on, so I will have zero idea about what to do when I actually lay Confused

OP posts:
Medee · 20/04/2011 16:13

ah, hippo CD reminds me. I have some stuff to give away...

  • The Hypnobirthing book and CD which has been doing the rounds, came to me from MsFC.
  • Two baby name books, which came from CurlyCasper
  • A packet of disposable pants, from Mothercare, sized 14-16. Pack of 5, unopened.

Shout whoever wants them and I shall aim to get them in the post as soon as possible.

LadyGoneGaga · 20/04/2011 16:15

You will have taken it in sub-consciously, Score. I don't think I've ever heard the end of mine Grin

The casual racism in this office re: the travellers who have taken up residence is pretty horrifying. Someone suggested (in jest) moving them on with some petrol and a box of matches. Had to say something - was a horrible thing to say - prob not very popular now.

Just had a row with MiniG's Dad re: MiniG's birthday. Apparently he couldn't possibly spend day setting differences aside with my family and his family. So they will have to do seperate things. And MrG's family don't count as his family because they are not blood. Grrr.

owlbooty · 20/04/2011 16:34

Score is that not the idea, that you put it on during the laying and sleep through all the gory bits until the sneeze? No? Damnit.

GG Grrr indeed. You'd think people could behave nicely for the sake of the little 'un, just for a day...or maybe not.

I think the olive green one or the blue one were lovely - pliz all to report on sizings when they turn up so I can work out which one I need. Grin

Muser · 20/04/2011 17:53

rocket the shoes arrived today and made me squee. Not tried them on yet as KateBob is very unhappy after her jabs. Once she'd calmed down I will get her modelling them.

Muser · 20/04/2011 18:41

They are ace! A perfect fit and strap seems in right place. Pics on FB.

Scorpette · 20/04/2011 18:47

GOOD FOR YOU, GG. I would've said something too. Angry Fuck being popular! Hope that idiot is rightfully feeling ashamed now.

And another grrrrrrr about MiniG's Dad. Is MiniG the most important factor or macho point-scoring?! Hmm And of course you have to swallow it all down to make sure MiniG just has lovely times. Arsehole.

I still feel v peculiar. Hope the hippo-birthing info is stored in my brain somewhere. I also have a relaxation CD done for me by a groovy gal from my NCT class which also makes me sleep like a log. But her husband is an influential thrash metal musician so I might end up yelling 'SATAN IS LORD!!!' during transition or summat Grin He was immensely chuffed and surprised that I recognised his name; my misspent youth wasn't entirely wasted it seems!

OP posts:
rocketleaf · 20/04/2011 19:42

Ooohscore how do you mean "odd"? We need details. I'd best crack on with your booties. Sounds like you might be needing them soon. (mwahahah)

muse thanks for the comments and the FB props. Great news they don't need tweaking so I can get on with everyone's without having to muck about with the pattern. I just hope they stay on :-) hope BK is feeling better now, she looks super cute :)

gg well done on speaking up. Feel a bit bad for my belt comment now as it's such a stereotype :-(

loz your collegues sound very lovely. Hope you have a great day tomorrow.

Got 34 week MW appointment tomorrow, need to sort out hospital tour (just in case)and organise home visit for HB chat. Been lots of movement from
sprout, not sure which way up she is but hoping that big hard bit at the top is a bum not a head!
