Scorps I think that's why I have so many, sleeveless, short sleeve, long sleeve - ARGH! Plus most of them are 0 - 3 months anyway, so if I have a smaller baby Mr Loz will have to buy more, else Bug will look like a bag lady/man.

Muse Thanks for the advice re temp. It doesn't help that the British summer can be chuffing boiling to freezing, so who knows?

Rocket I gave up on the hospital bag for the same reason you mentioned - I'll be using most of my stuff over the next few weeks. So far it consists of a toothbrush & some paper knickers. But as always, that is a good idea re samples, Scorps. May try again later.....

CurlyCasper · 03/05/2011 13:06

WRT to regulating their temperatures, they usually do. I say usually because Squeaks had to go in an incubator and have transitional care due to being that wee bit prem. During a June heatwave she spent from birth at noon until 5am the next morning in an incubator in a vest and babygro and hat (possibly also cardi). Then when she got out she had to wear about five layers including a fleece jacket. The other baby on the transitional ward looked like a woolly gnome Smile. But once the MWs were confident she could hold her temperature (and blood sugar levels) she was dressed "normally". But a few days later, when she was readmitted, she was roasting in just a vest.

So if you have a full term baby, in good health, you should be absolutely fine with the "one layer more than you" rule. Unless you are cold blooded like me (baby usually wears fewer layers than I do these days).

I'm getting very excited for the imminent laying! And great to see kimdeal in these parts.

rocketleaf · 03/05/2011 13:15

Toiletries arent really the problem score I am just going to grab the wash bag from my swimming bag and transfer it as have packed everything i need for hospital in that. It's more nighties/dressing gown etc. I don't really wear them at home so don't really want to have to buy them especially for hospital, especially not ginormous ones that will cover the bump. I am currently using TBs japanese one as mine won't go over my belly so i think that will just have to get shoved in at the last minute and i am going to nick some of his old teeshirts to go in for nighties.

Like i said, if I knew I was going in to hospital to have the baby I wouldnt mind but doesnt really make sense to buy a load of stuff that hopefully will never get used.

LadyGoneGaga · 03/05/2011 13:27

That's why my hossie bag packing was rubbish last time - there were loads of stuff i couldn't take out of service for 4 weeks. This time I will have a toiletries bag packed as per Score - I may just not unpack my holiday toiletries bag as that is pretty much all miniatures so will do me.

I was only in for 24 hours anyway so didn't need much stuff. But do get more maternity pads than you could possibly think necessary. You will bleed. A lot. And do get the maternity ones, not the heavy Always ones or similar (they pull on your stitches and don't let you/your midwife observe amount of blood loss etc). And don't fanny around with slimline. You need the big bricks for first few days and they are also nice and cushiony on any sore bits.

Excellent advice from Muse on baby temps. Don't underestimate how hot they get in slings either. And for later you can get cute little legwarmers for use in slings as their little trousers will ride up and get cold legs otherwise. Like this. Maybe a new project idea for Rocket?

LadyGoneGaga · 03/05/2011 13:29

Rocket I just got a cheap massive one from Primark just in case - needs to be front opening for the breastfeeding. So worth getting one cheapo one. And when you get to hospital they put me in a gown to deliver anyway so no mess on that.

Orchid12 · 03/05/2011 14:55

Afternoon all. Good to see all the talk on the hossie bag front. I have been thinking about this, but can't remember what I packed last time as I didn't use it 'cause had the homebirth. Would anyone mind sharing their list of things that need packing/did pack and found useful? So far I have:

  • some maternity pads (the huge ones like LGG recommends)
  • breast pads
  • baby's first outfit
  • some nappies
  • my tens machine

I LOVED reading Poos stories about Boo's adventures. Gave me a good old belly laugh. We are just potty training mini O at the moment so I can see the developing interest in toilet behaviour and it concerns me that I am going to find myself in a similar position at some point fairly soon!!

rocketleaf · 03/05/2011 14:55

Oh god, does that mean I have to go shopping before D day? Waaaah! Oh i know i have a couple of those shirtdress things which would be fine to sleep in so will bung them in.

Loving the leg warmers, they would be the easiest thing in the world to crochet (just need dimensions)

Muser · 03/05/2011 15:30

I got a dressing gown from Primark as well. And a nightie from Next that had drop cups for feeding. I gave birth in an oversized long sleeved t style pajama top that I already had. I think I had ideas of wearing something else but when contractions started I couldn't be arsed to change.

Get a dark coloured dressing gown/pjs, not pristine white. And definitely what LadyG says about maternity pads. Buy more, buy thick.

LadyGoneGaga · 03/05/2011 15:35

Erm, here goes from memory

Toiletries
Cotton wool and little bowl for changing baby
Nappies
Nightie
Book/magazine for when visitors have gone home and you're bored.

Snacks - I took cereal bars and cartons of juice
2 or 3 babygrows. vests, hat. cardie?
Your going home outfit (prob leggings and long top or similar)
Either cheapo massive primark pants or paper pants
Mat towels
Breastpads
Nursing bra
Camera
Some make up (so as not to scare small children in the photos)
Hair bobbles
Flip flops for skanky shower
Flash wipes in case shower really skanky
Can't remember if I needed a towel - prob not.

Just got back from midwife. All is good and she is very nice. Bump measuring as normal even if I look massive! Baby is head down but not engaged which I wouldn't have expected at this point anyway. She did scare me though - "let's see you again at 32 weeks, then you'll see Consultant at 34 weeks and then we'll come and deliver your homebirth pack at 36 weeks". Eeek, doesn't sound long away when she puts it like that!!

laurielou · 03/05/2011 15:43

Oh, I thought I was doing OK on the hossie bag front, until I saw everything I'd missed off LadyG's list.

laurielou · 03/05/2011 15:43

Sorry, LadyG good MW news.

Ivegotmrbitey · 03/05/2011 15:48

Me and the FDH howled laughing at that too pol. You were lucky my sainsbury's has smack users in the toilets!

I still need to get maternity pads and mahoosive knickers. I am strangely reluctant to buy the knickers becuase the size of them makes me want to cry.

In the baby's bag I have two in hospital outfits and two going home outfits, a packet of nappies that make me go squee a lot, cotton wool, muslin squares and baby wipes. He still needs a hat and a blanket too. I have no idea why I have muslin squares in there, they are the most mysterious to me of all the baybee accoutrements! Anything else? I will be taking my buzzwams in with me.

I have packed mini versions of my usual toiletries in a wash bag and made a list of the other stuff I want to take. This includes plastic champagne flutes and a thermal bottle bag (for champagne not milk, I have my priorities).

I know that it is pretty early still but I am list-dependent in that if I don't have a list I panic. I find a row of ticks on a to do list immensely satisfying! the FDH could use a nicely ticked list as foreplay I also like spread sheets and have set up a lovely one with every single thing I want to buy, how much it costs and where from (sometimes with web links). You can do running totals on it and everything.

I have finally found a use for baby powder, and it's not for baybees. It's for giant sweaty differs to dust themselves with to stop bras rubbing and thighs chafing. On the plus side no more rash, on the down side I used to smell of perfume and now smell like babies.

Ivegotmrbitey · 03/05/2011 15:50

Good midwife news but still eek GG! That sounds very soon!

How many maternity pads is it worth stocking up on? There are somethings I do not trust the FDH to buy!

Muser · 03/05/2011 16:13

I'm not sure how many packets I got through. Maybe 4? Maybe more. It was a lot. I think I needed them for about 3 weeks after birth, but by the end a slimline one will work.

I did need a towel for my hospital bag. I would also recommend an eye mask if you want to get any sleep on the ward if you end up there. And food. Lots of food.

Best things I took were:

A flannel, it was boiling in the hospital and giving birth is hot work. A cold flannel on my forehead was most pleasant.
Cartons of juice with straws, TBG could administer these to me while in labour
A large box of biscuits, meant to be there to share with midwives so they like you. Actually ended up being eaten by me through the night as I got no dinner.
Flip flops, floors are skanky.
My phone. No wait, I forgot to pack that. DON"T FORGET YOUR PHONE!

owlbooty · 03/05/2011 16:38

Fuck! Why are you all so organised??? I am only 26 weeks, surely I can think about this sort of shit in 3 months' time?

Scorpette · 03/05/2011 16:46

I hadn't thought of flipflops - but seeing as they're the only things I can get on my trotters, I'll be wearing them anyway. Should I take a spare pair anyway?

I've packed a jumbo pack of maternity bricks. With wings, no less. Am sure these will make me feel like a sexual dynamo when slapped on my size-wtf paper granny pants Grin

I hadn't thought of some cleaning wipes, either. God, as if my menkul wasn't at Amber Alert already!

Got juice, not thought about a flannel. Hilariously, I have a natural sponge packed, because the NCT lady said these can be good to fill with water and suck on Hmm Have breast pads, my own norks, normal jumbo pants if paper ones are rubbish, some new massive cheap nighties and a chic 'n' sophisticated Snoopy dressing gown because it was literally the only dressing gown they had in Primark when I did my Big Shop. It's not too bad if you ignore a frolicking Snoopy on the left breast, ahem. I have been so anal that I've also packed peppermint tea in case of a emcs, as I've heard a cs can give you terrible gripey wind.

I have a nightmare that we'll forget the car seat. We haven't fitted it the back of the car yet (though we have practised). We have fitted back seat blinds, for the full PFB effect (not ones shaped like animal faces, though).

  • I have several lovely lists for all my preggo/labouring/baybee needs on Google docs and get immense satisfaction in doing strikethroughs of everything I complete/purchase/pack, etc. I'm sure we control freak PESH will not find motherhood a shock at all Hmm
OP posts:
Ivegotmrbitey · 03/05/2011 20:20

Exactly! We could co write a guide bok, how about the contented little spreadsheet whispering way to being a perfect parent? Or, how to excel at motherhood?

I bought a White blanket with an embroidered duckling on it in m and s it's most cute. It needed to be as was a comfort purchase after a scrap in mamas and papas over a faulty dress. I am still vay cross with them but too tired to fight the consumer rights fight.

Truffkin · 03/05/2011 21:10

Hello Haglets, have had fun catching up on toilet-related amusement and am Shock at the thought that needs to go into packing hossie bag - eep. I am still chanelling the spirit of vom-PESH in spite of my GP being absolutely convinced that I would be all puked out by now and wouldn't need to try any more drucks. Ha ha, little did she know I'd be back and begging for something that will make it stop. Today I have managed to throw up plain toast, a ham sandwich (homemade), 6 fruit pastilles and a glass of water. I am concerned that I may need a stomach lining transplant when this is all done.

Soz, went a bit ranty ranty there on your asses Blush In better news, I am very excited for our 12 weeks scan on Saturday! TGB is very much looking forward to people knowing, I think so he can tell amusing (to him) stories of the random things that have set of a bout of vomming over the last 6 weeks. Bless him, he is feeling a bit helpless but is becoming quit accomplished at bringing me Waitrose fruit ice lollies (like little mini milk shaped ones) which is about all that I seem to be able to stomach regularly. Such fun!

Am already looking forward to making every effort to get the weight back on that I've lost and enjoying being the same weight as I was pre-pg, once the sickness gives over (I'm not sylph like in the first place but am fairly certain I would have used 'eating for two' as an excuse to pig out from very early on if I'd been able to face food for any length of time.

Enough of my moaning (again!) now. I am loving the talk of tiny lickle outfits, snuffly blankets and nesting! By the way, has anyone seen Wol about recently? It seems like ages since she posted - Woooooooooleeeeeeeee come back and play with us pliz.

Orchid12 · 03/05/2011 21:23

Cheers for all the hossie bag advice Smile You lot are a wealth of info! You also make me feel better about having lists and enjoying the satisfaction of ticking things off.

Truffles sounds like you have it bad my friend! I can remember the feeling of only wanting to eat ice lolly's all too well - they were pretty much the only thing that I kept down too. I munched through packets and packets of rocket lollys (and drank copious amounts of lemonade). Am hoping it passes for you soon and you can start to enjoy all the squeeing over cute clothes without feeling crap.

MadameBoo · 03/05/2011 21:30

I'm glad I didn't read The Baby Whisperer. How can you sort babies into types? They're people FFS. Sometimes they're grumpy and sometimes they're happy. Utter TOSH.

Sorry.

Ariesgirl · 03/05/2011 21:40

You poor cah, Truffers :(

MadameBoo · 03/05/2011 21:42

Truffs Look up there ^

She has posted - she'd been on her hollibobs :)

Truffkin · 03/05/2011 22:05

Oh Blush so she had (and I thought I had checked properly!)

Forgot to say that I got a letter on Saturday saying I'd tested positive for Strep B (GBS) and of course, Google myself silly over the bank holiday weekend. I spoke to a MW today and they are not overly worried, I am seeing a consultant next Tuesday and they say she will discuss it with me then. As it showed up in a urine sample they think it's likely I'll need to take antibiotics now and then if it's still showing in a swab within 4 weeks of my due date, I'll need intravenous anti-Bs during labour. I was a bit Hmm about this affecting my chances of an active birthing-centre experience but the midwife was very chilled and said, all else being well she didn't think this alone should stop me having that kind of birth.

I luffs her!

Thanks for sick-related sympathies, and am really trying not to be a moany moanerson as would much rather be here with vomming than not of course. I just underestimated exactly how yuk I would feel trying to go about my normal life whilst concealing stealth-vomming so often at work Grin Orchid I was getting on ok with lemonade until I had an unfortunate incident with a bottle of still lemon-aid from Pret a few weeks back, cannot even look at the stuff now! Poor TGB is a bit Sad that I don't ever fancy a nice takeaway as it's not quite the same having something 'nice' or 'treaty' on your own. At least we can both enjoy the pigging out together once it stops.

Ivegotmrbitey · 04/05/2011 07:45

Poor pukey truff! it will stop soon! If you are getting on with ice lollies can you stomach very icy drinks? I was you comrade in arms around the bowl last night, no idea why but recoveredsufficiently to eat Sunday dinner pie later.

So, anyone having a starwars baybee?

laurielou · 04/05/2011 08:53

Bitey am not having a starwars baby, but that is the reason Mr Loz asked for our Mamas & Papas delivery to be today . He has also threatened to register Bug's name as Chewbacca if I don't get my arse out of bed within a nano second of sneezing Bug out Grin.

Poor Truffs & the vomming. I was about to whinge about feeling ever so slightly nauseous again at this stage, but you've made me realise how damned lucky I've been. I really hope it stops soon, vomming is the worst. Good luck for the scan.
