Hi all,
I have had a very traumatic week indeed.
Had my 20 week scan on Tuesday afternoon where they found that my twins have twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. One of the babies was really quite poorly, no amniotic fluid around it, not able to move and heart appeared to be struggling. Other baby was swimming around in waaaaay too much fluid and heart / kidneys would have been struggling as well.
I was urgently referred to Birmingham hosp yesterday and met with a specialist consultant yesterday afternoon. He did scan and basically said the best / only option was to have surgery - laser ablation surgery - to laser through the placenta so each baby has their own half. Needless to say, many and varied risks involved - not least was both babies dying - but also waters breaking, early labour, potential cerebral palsy for any survivors.
Long story short, I stayed in overnight and had the surgery this morning. Horrible experience - much like CS, had to have spinal anaesthetic, proper operating theatre with about 15 people in, nil by mouth etc etc. BUT it went as well as it possibly have gone - surgeon was amazing - and we had a scan at 5:30pm which showed that both babies are still alive. Both had heartbeats and the smaller one started to have a bit more fluid around him /her. Obviously fantastic news for today (you can't imagine how much we were dreading the scan and preparing for the worst) but we're by no means out of the woods yet. Apparently the next scan - at 1 week - is the most important as if they're both ok then, then they stand a good chance. But I'm still at risk of waters breaking early now and also early labour.
I'm now back home and feeling very glad to be here - and that I get to sleep in my own bed tonight, but exhausted emotionally and physically :( . Thank god for my DH being a complete darling throughout the whole experience.
Sorry for very self-centred post!! I will read everyone else's news (although have already seen morningsmadness 's news - congratulations!!! and YAY I have a twin buddy!! Hope my news doesn't freak you out - it is VERY rare and only in MCDA twins so if yours aren't, then you'll be fine). I've been signed off for another week so will have plenty of time to catch up on news and will be on here all the time I should think!!
Hope you're all very well x x
