I never bothered with disposable knickers - just used old ones and then binned them - its a good excuse to treat yourself to some new underwear.
I have bought some breast pads but not meternity pads yet. I have even thought about packing a bag - but not actually done anything yet!!

Morgan · 22/11/2005 19:15

Hi all,

Just been catching up on the thread. I agree about the disposable knickers and just used my own as they were comfy. My waters broke and i kept leaking (tmi i know) and i had to wear string ones with a big towel in for 24 hours before i gave birth so was desperate to wear normal knickers and i didn't actually ruin any! I just wanted something stretchy and comfortable (which my normal ones are - no g strings or anything! if those are your normal choice i would recommend something bigger and comfy)

Re the bag i packed mine last time the evening before my waters broke 5 weeks early. You need everything for you and the baby in 2 seperate bags one for labour and one for afters. I took my own pillows into hospital as well to be comfy - good job as ended up staying there for almost two weeks.

A couple of things to recommend - Bach rescue remedy which i drank in water - no idea if it helped but who knows and homeopathic arnica tablets (can get them in Boots) which you take after and are supposed to help with bruising etc and sore bits! Again no idea if they helped but i recovered quite quickly so would take them again. Also lots of baby clothes (well vests and babygros anyway, wdn't bother with anything else)as they seem to get them dirty quickly.

flamesparrow · 22/11/2005 19:20

Oooh yes, start taking arnica a bit before the due date too - it sort of buffers then

TheOriginalTicTac · 22/11/2005 19:24

ooo, I am loving reading all the advice...does it bring it home to you all that we are going to have our babies soon?????

Morgan · 22/11/2005 20:01

Tictac - not too soon i hope! still v paranoid about this !

Flamesparrow - i didn't know that - good advice!

Jasnem · 22/11/2005 21:02

Added arnica to my ever expanding shopping list.

Also going to start drinking Raspberry Leaf Tea soon. Anyone got any thoughts on it. Does it help at all?

TheOriginalTicTac · 22/11/2005 21:15

Jasnem - I have heard it is great...but I wouldn't know from experience. Is it menat to encourage labour or something?

Tabs - you been busy?

Tabs · 22/11/2005 21:26

Lol - just thought I'd better post as I've hardly been on all day, and there you are asking about me! Have been really busy with work again - just can't see an end in sight to it at the moment. Ah well, helps pass the time I guess. I was supposed to be at Slimming World tonight, but I weighed myself and realised that I've gained 3.5lbs in the last week , so chickened out of going! Was knackered so had a lovely snooze for nearly 2 hours - thought I'd better get up then or I won't sleep tonight!

You've all been incredibly chatty today haven't you?! There's a thread (or 2) on hospital bags with lots of lists of things to include - just do an archive search to find them - they're only a few months old.

Jansem - I think midwives recommend that you don't start drinking RLT before 37 weeks, as there's a risk of it bringing on prem labour, and we don't want that just yet do we?!

Jasnem · 22/11/2005 21:29

Its supposed to sort of strengthen your uterus, therefore making labour quicker and easier.
I did take it in my earlier pregs and had good labours, but of course I don't know what it would have been like if I hadn't taken it.
It doesn't seem to have any side effects if taken in last trimester, and to be honest after 6 months of drinking nothing but water, I'm looking forward to it.

Sorry about double posting(again)
I definitely took R leaf tea from about 30 weeks before . I believe it can induce labour/miscarrage if taken in first trimester, but I went over due date both times so didn't bring on anything for me.Will ask midwife when I see her next week though to be on safe side before I start this time.

tabs - you go to slimming world when you're pregnant. Surely you're not hoping to lose weight!

Tabs · 22/11/2005 21:42

Absolutely Jasnem - they've worked with the royal college of midwives to ensure that the diet is suitable for pregnant women - it's the only 'standard' diet that's recommended. I'm currently (even after this week's big gain) 8lbs lighter than when I conceived, but finding it hard to get motivated at the moment. Think my motivation is buried at the bottom of a pile of chocolate, and I'm having to work my way through the choc to find it . I do have plenty of body fat to spare though, so neither Pippa or I are going short!

ixel · 22/11/2005 21:51

Evening all. I'd agree not to bother with disposable knickers... not good for your self confidence, and I found they weren't stretchy enough to get on and off with a c section scar, so poor dh ended up helping out! Neither am I bothered about which pads I use this time either, as had 3 different sorts last ime and they all leaked!
Actually, I think I'm being far too complacant this time. I haven't even begun to think about hospital bags, as last time I didn't even open the labour one because it was all so traumatic! And we dont have any plans as to what to do with ds either. A friend has offered, but it might be hard logistically, and he doesn't really know her all that well. I'm still living in the dream world where I just have the baby alone this time, while dh stays with ds. Haven't quite worked out if I'm mad or not. I dont mind doing things on my own, but I might look back and regret it.

As for the potty training... how I'd love to get ds done before this one arrives, but I'm sure he's still too little. Its being traumatic enough trying to get him to sleep in a bed (and largely unsuccessful).I just think that if I dont do it now, it'll be impossible with a baby to look after too. He does follow me to the loo saying 'I wanna do a wee too', and he does sometimes tell me when he's done a poo, but there's not alot of understanding there really.

Jasnem · 22/11/2005 22:06

Ixel - if you're not sure about potty training yet then don't. The longer you leave it the easier it will be.

Tabs - wow. Just think how small you'll be when you've had the baby. I can't imagine tring to keep to any sort of diet, particularly now. Says the woman who has had four mars bars today .But then I'm lucky enough to have "thin" genes.

Morgan · 22/11/2005 22:11

Ixel - i agree re the toilet training my ds was nearly 3 and it was so easy - and i thought he might be very stubborn about it and i've only ever had about 10 accidents. So i'd wait if i was you.

Going to bed now - i have been staying up too late with dh away but i can't keep it up for five weeks - i'll be exhausted! Goodnight all.

Jasnem · 22/11/2005 22:13

good idea morgan, I can't stay up late evey night then complain because I'm tired.
Night all.

Morning All,

well after our chats on hospital bags last night I made a start!!! I bought some big baggy nightshirts from Primark last weekend and a cotton dressing gown which I thought were going to be too big but they look quite good on!! I packed those, maternity pads, breast pads, toiletries, nappies, a little bit of makeup (just powder and blusher as I'm very pale) and sorted through the baby's stuff to wash some vests and sleepsuits and his snowsuit, a couple of blankets, socks, mittens and a hat!! All in washing basket ready to go. Was getting quite excited getting it all ready, still have a few bits to stick in there and will add to it as and when I get them but hey it's a start. I know it's still quite early but one less thing to do.

How are you all today, my pains have quietened down, had a few in the bath last night and I think the baby has been eating spinich as I'm sure it's where he is moving and kicking etc, he has got quite strong all of a sudden that his kicks are taking my breath away. Think we also had some hiccups in the bath too but only for a minute or so.

Chloe55 · 23/11/2005 09:22

Morning girls,

Not had the most comfortable nights sleep, I am suffering pretty badly with acid indigestion combined with numerous bouts of BH. I also have a very grumpy DH because he is sitting exams and is stressed so is therefore taking it out on me, what with me being miserable too it doesn't make for a very happy household at the mo

I'm getting quite excited about packing my hospital bag but think I will still leave it a few weeks, I seem to have done everything before I was 'meant' to so am not gonna tempt fate now!

TheOriginalTicTac · 23/11/2005 09:42

3K - Wow..bag almost packed!! Please don't take offence by my quesiton, I am asking because of my lack of knowledge! Given your method of conception, is there anything different about your labour...as in, do a higher proportion of IVF pregnancies go into labour early/ late etc or is it all standard stuff for you?

Helen38 · 23/11/2005 09:46

Morning!

Bit slow and stiff this morning, sometimes being pg is a bit like turning into a little old lady Think am still a little sensitive as was getting dressed very slowly this morning due to sore ligaments and dh shouted upstairs asking if i had gone back to bed so i stomped down and grumbled about being slow cos it hurts then burst into floods of tears Felt silly after but it hadbeen building up all day yesterday.

3k, glad not hurting so much, did your mw get back to you?

Chloe poor you not enough sleep is not good. At least if you have lots of bh your body should be all practiced and ready by the time baby comes so it could be nice a nd quick

Chloe55 · 23/11/2005 09:58

I'm definitely liking your way of thinking Helen!

Helen38 · 23/11/2005 10:02

It's what i keep telling myself and at the rate I'm going this baby is just going to pop out Ihope

3k · 23/11/2005 10:15

Hi TicTac - funny you should ask that as I did ask my midwife the same question the other day and she said my pregnancy should be treated as normal and I should go full term if all is ok. Once you conceive via IVF I think you have a few extra scans in the beginning (so far I've had 5 and one more to go on 8th Dec because of low placenta)but then all should go as normal. Saying that though I have to see the consultant at the hospital in a few weeks because he sees me as a "higher risk pregnancy" than others although really not sure why. I tried to get out of it but my midwife insisted on me going because of my blood pressure.

Helen - midwife said to see how things go, they pains had settled down by the time she called me back yesterday but she said if they persisted then call labour ward and get them to check me out. Feel ok this morning, had a few twinges but not like yesterday.

Packed bag partly because of my pains and partly because of blood pressure, I am a really organised person for some reason but saying that the nursery still isnt done! I thought that I could add bits when I think of them too instead of doing it in a rush. I did get very excited putting everything in there and I have to buy a few bits and pieces too like cheapy knickers from Primark to put in there.
