I will read the link on the VBAC stuff, I'm not sure how much they will want to monitor me, it has been five and a half years since my section, so the scar should be perfectly well healed by now (you'd think!!).
I am not too worried about having to be monitored, I just didn't like the idea of having to be monitored if it meant I was stuck on the bed for the entire labour, but they did say I'd be able to walk around and be mobile, so that sounded okay with me.
Community midwives were supportive if I wanted a home birth, but its just not for me. Am trying to leave myself fairly flexible as to what happens in labour, and whether it results in another section (I dont want to automatically have one, but am okay to have one if its necessary iyswim). My only hard & fast rule is that I want DH there no matter what happens, everything else, prepapred to be flexible.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 19/04/2011 13:04

Am at midwife tomorrow, only feels like five minutes since I last saw her! Wonder whether I can break the tradition and see whether I see the same person, which would be a first in this pregnancy, am def feeling the "community" aspect of the midwife service!

runningmonkey · 19/04/2011 13:10

Side by side loopy and that one looks fab (in fact I think its my buggy in the picture!)...

Best of luck vicbic - keep us posted!

Perpetuallypregnant · 19/04/2011 14:30

Monitoring was pretty much like that for me loopy - last May. It was a joke really, we kept losing hb and dh had to hold it on. In the end I told them I didnt want it as it seemed so pointless and I was in agony.

Rollercoasteryears · 19/04/2011 14:34

Yes good luck Vicbic hope things get going soon! Exciting to know it's the beginning of the end Smile

I'm trying to decide whether to ring my GP about getting some pethidine for my planned HB. I had always understood that you could have pethidine at a HB, provided you ordered it in advance from the doctor and basically held it in your fridge, because the MWs don't carry it. Although I'd rather not use it, I had planned to get some, because it's the only pain relief I had with DS and it worked for me - took the edge off nicely and really speeded up my dilation. I didn't have gas and air because I was throwing up already and the MW advised against it. So I'm slightly nervous about going into a HB with only water and entonox, as I didn't try either of them last time and have no idea how well they'll work for me... However, when I saw the MW last week to discuss the HB, I asked if I just needed to ring the GP to get some on prescription and she totally dismissed it saying no, they don't give it for HBs, she never has and wouldn't want to because you need to monitor the baby closely and they only have hand held dopplers. Then she proceeded to pass me an information sheet about HB which referred to being able to have pethidine at home if you want it! So am now not sure whether to ignore her and ring the GP anyway to try and get it as a back up plan on the basis she seemed very dismissive of the idea and may just have a thing against pethidine, or whether to trust that her dismissiveness is based on something e.g. a genuine concern about ability to monitor the baby... Any thoughts welcome!

Rollercoasteryears · 19/04/2011 14:36

P.S. Should also say the chances of getting that MW for my HB are quite low - she's one of 8 community MWs and she only works 2 days a week, so if I did get some, the others may well be more willing to give it than she is, although for all I know it could be the policy of all of them!

Bonkerz · 19/04/2011 14:43

thanks all for the support... Yes ds is sruggling with the idea baby will be here soon. I think he also knows im vulnerable so plays on it (who wouldnt! LOL)
Physio was bad news, my pelvis has dropped with the weight of the baby and no amount of stabilising or manipulation is gonna help now so i have been given crutches and exercises to strengthen and thats it now till baby comes.
21 days is all i have to keep thinking! 21 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rollercoasteryears · 19/04/2011 14:44

Oh Bonkerz you poor thing - you're getting it from all sides at the moment. Yes hang on to that 21 days thought!

Bonkerz · 19/04/2011 14:45

lol, what dont kill me and all that LMAO.........21 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DontWorryBaby · 19/04/2011 14:58

Rollercoaster I had pethidine during my first labour. I was 4-5cm dilated but my contractions were still over 5 minutes apart so the delivery suite didn't want me there and the labour ward don't have gas&air. There was no monitoring whatsoever - I got the injection, dozed off, woke about 1.5 hours later and my waters went, at which point I had to call a midwife. Unless they were checking on me inbetween while I was out for the count...? But no, I don't think they need to do continuous monitoring after pethidine.

Why not phone your GP to discuss it with them? Check what his/her policy is?

QwertyQueen · 19/04/2011 14:59

"LMAO" an unfortunate turn of phrase!

Rollercoasteryears · 19/04/2011 15:08

Thanks Dontworry, that's a good point actually, I wasn't monitored either last time - she gave me the injection, the next 4 hours passed in a bit of a trance and the next thing was I had an urge to push - I certainly don't remember any monitoring during that time...

StiffyByng · 19/04/2011 15:49

Roller I may be wrong but I think if you've had pethidine, you then can't use a birthing pool. Would that be a problem for you?

Bonkerz, ouch, you poor thing. I'm a fellow crutches user and it does actually help a lot, particularly on stairs, but isn't the greatest look! But 21 days... I'm due in 2 weeks and this baby is under strict instructions not to be very late.

Thanks Stiffy and Loopy. I'd very much see it as a last resort if the entonox and pool weren't cutting it for me and to avoid a transfer in for more pain relief, so I guess in those circumstances, getting out of the pool wouldn't be a problem.

I've actually just had a call back from the duty doctor (I followed Dontworry's advice and phoned earlier) and he was happy to prescribe it but did say to talk to the MWs as not all of them may feel happy giving it. I guess I'll pick it up and see who I get on the day - if I want it and they won't do it, so be it - I obviously can't discuss it with all 8 of the ones I may get! (No idea who 7 of them are for a start...).

I'd like to avoid using pethidine this time around as well but like rollercoaster, found that it helped me relax & sleep for an hour or so which allowed me to dilate from 4/5cm to 8/9cm so it was definitely of use first time around! Hoping this time to be more relaxed and not need it. Hoping. Grin

QwertyQueen · 19/04/2011 16:24

Loopy, I wish someone had told me about the transition thing first time round!
I was a classic case of "I can't go on. Get me an epidural NOW!" after a few hours of G&A.
About 5 minutes later DS was born!
