What is the FMC?

knittymum · 08/03/2011 11:52

Just made my appointment for booking appointment and scan - nearly 5 weeks away! I'll be 12 weeks by then, but it feels like a lifetime to wait! I wish I could go to sleep for four and a half weeks, that would be lovely!

Hope everyone's keeping well, and managing the waiting better than me!!

LittlePebble · 08/03/2011 13:01

Sorry not been on here for a while as had the worst nausea/ stressful days at work etc. etc.

anyhow so sorry to hear your news, thinking of you.

hello to all the newbies - how exciting!

Last night I had acupuncture for the first time - recommended by the midwife and so far today (touch wood) I seem to be feeling ok....it better work it's not cheap Shock!

I just cannot afford to be useless at work anymore Sad too much to do and as DP's business I need it to be successful so we can support the baby.

Am now 9+2 and finding my worries are increasing daily - I'm now convinced I'm giong to MC or there will be something wrong with the scan, but glad to read I'm not the only one feeling like this.

KnitterNotTwitter · 08/03/2011 13:07

rebel the FMC is the Foetal Medical Centre in London I think... Google it and you'll find it.

sunface I'd take the job...

I got my letters with appointments for booking in, bloods and anomalie scan, through the other day... Will all be complete in less than a month which actually seems quite soon :)

rebelwithoutababy · 08/03/2011 13:32

sunface me too: take the job! They obviously think you are the best person for the role, or they wouldn't have given it to you. I had a similar situation in that I have been given a project for two years that is my dream job, funded by an outside company.I knew I wanted to get pregnant, and I really respect my boss and didn't want to let her down. I explained that I could plan around a period of mat leave, to ensure there was a way to make the project sustainable during that time. I think that when you're ready to tell them, you just need to do that: emphasise your committment to the job, come up with a plan for how you would ensure your absence would be effectively covered (e.g. getting someone else up to speed, setting things up so they can run on their own, etc)and it should be fine. Even if not, just having a baby does not mean you are not still the best person for the job, and they just need to get on and realise that!!! Good luck

rebelwithoutababy · 08/03/2011 13:32

p.s thanks knitter! Found it...

sunface · 08/03/2011 13:44

thanks rebel and knitter. i'm just seriously doubting accepting it to be honest now as it looks like the salary will be the same for a lot more work and a lot more travel. I need to weigh up if it's really worth all the additional problems that it'll create on the home front side of things before i commit..... xxx

happymummytobe · 08/03/2011 14:16

rebel FMC is the Fetal Medical Centre in London.

happymummytobe · 08/03/2011 14:20

Sorry knitter just seen you beat me to it! X

dribbleface · 08/03/2011 14:24

sunface - like you said you need to weigh it up, but if you want to do it I personally would tell them, but thats based on the relationship i have with my boss.

My lovely GP has done me a letter so course postponed til May, thank god, feel like a weight of my shoulders. Stil sick as a dog though, might look into acupucture.

mpops · 08/03/2011 14:24

happymummytobe, I was at FMC this morning too! A bit later than you maybe. Glad to hear yours went well!

Aw, we had a viability scan too and it was completely amazing. I was so relieved. Loud heartbeat, loads of moving around, a health 3cm. I can't believe I've finally seen our bean. Can't wait for the neuchal scan in two weeks. I'm glad I did this now because I can relax. I was so nervous the whole time.

daimbardiva · 08/03/2011 15:52

Hello all, I keep forgetting this thread is here! 11 weeks now- only 9 days till 12 week scan. I just can't wait to see my wee blob again (already had scan at 7 weeks) and to be able to go public!

Hope you are all getting on OK, and not feeling as knackered as me...

happymummytobe · 08/03/2011 16:08

mpops wow, glad to hear yours went well too! It's amazing isn't it?! Makes it all seem real. I was assuming I would just have the normal 12 week scan at my hospital, but the FMC 11-13 week scan seems more detailed. Are you going to have both done?

mpops · 08/03/2011 16:23

happymummytobe, we had ours at 9+5 weeks, so it was a viability scan rather than a proper neuchal one. I'll get that at the hospital in two weeks' time. Just couldn't wait so long to know if baby was alright because I'm a nervous wreck by nature!

Was yours a neuchal one then? That must have been really great.

sunface · 08/03/2011 16:35

this is going to sound a bit mad.. has anyone felt anything like movement yet??? i'm convinced i feel the odd flutter, but keep thinking it's wayyy too early for that (10wks) - tis my 3rd if that makes any difference??

emmazed · 08/03/2011 16:41

happymumtobe & mpops i am going to the FMC for the 11-13 week scan as well. i have the nhs one at the end of this week (10+3), but we are going to pay extra to have the full scan done at 12 weeks as well. our hospital only does the basic checks.

i am pleased you both liked the place & would recommend it.

i am trying not to get myself too excited about the scan (as i know it could not be good news) but just the thought of hearing the heartbeat brings me to tears

happymummytobe · 08/03/2011 16:46

mpops No, mine was just a viability scan too. But I'm considering going back to the FMC for a 12 week scan too (as well as my normal hospital 12 week scan). Is that bonkers?! I'll ask my midwife tomorrow...

I'm also a bit of a nervous wreck and seeing the baby today was so reassuring and incredible. It's made me feel even more protective!

happymummytobe · 08/03/2011 16:49

emmazed I have to admit I cried a little bit when I heard the heartbeat Smile

KnitterNotTwitter · 08/03/2011 17:39

sunface its entirely possible that you've felt movement. I felt my DS (1st baby) from about 8 weeks. MW didn't believe me but it couldn't be anything else.

OP posts:
mpops · 08/03/2011 17:43

I cried too! But also giggled really hard and the sonographer asked me to stop so she could get a better view. Blush

My local NHS hospital is very good and it's actually the place where the FMC people do all their research work - so they'll give me the same sort of scan that the FMC would give me at 12 weeks, and the full set of tests. Which is lucky, I suppose. happymummytobe, ask the midwife exactly what tests you'll get at your 12-week scan and see if it's all the ones you need. No point paying extra for exactly the same scan.

emmazed, best of luck with your scan. x

rebelwithoutababy · 08/03/2011 17:44

Oh need help all. I am sure something is going wrong: for the last couple of days I have felt worryingly close to normal - not sick, boobs hurting less, just tired. No bleeding or pain, but am 8 weeks and really worried I am having an MMC. Should I ring early preg unit and ask for a scan? Am I just being paranoid and mad? What should I do? My DH is away on business and I don't want to tell him....

mpops · 08/03/2011 18:02

Hi rebel. I don't know about anyone else, but I've had days like that. They have made me feel really really worried (hence my paying for an early scan today) but it all seems fine. I guess what I'm saying is, don't worry! If it's going to make you feel better by all means ask your EPU for a scan but as far as I understand, having days when you're not on full-on pg mode is normal.

Tamashii · 08/03/2011 18:29

rebel I had a couple of days like you where all my symptoms seemed to disappear and my boobs totally eased off but were still kind of tender and I had slight low down cramp. I really got down cos I had very early MC last time but then a couple of days later I was into week 9 I think and all the symptoms came back along with the hellish MS and constant vomitting! I am nearly 11 weeks now and the main symptoms are constant nausea, occassional vomitting, slightly tender boobs and still pretty low energy levels.

I guess if you are really worried there is no harm in phoning up EPU for reassurance and ask if there is a chance of an early scan. It is impossible not to get worried - especially if you are on your own just now with your DH away and no one in RL to talk to :( Hope you are ok.

kateepie2 · 08/03/2011 18:59

Hello all,

Had my booking appointment with the MW today, she asked lots of questions about my medical history and all seemed fine and straightforward. Had to have the what-if conversation with DP about the nuchal scan/downs screening, I feel very ambivalent about it - how do you all feel about it? I definitely don't really want any invasive tests.

In other news, I have been kindly contaminated by cold germs from one of my work colleagues, so now have a ever dripping nose to add to the nausea/dizziness... joy.

Hope things are ok with you rebel

sodthehousework · 08/03/2011 18:59

hello all. hope everyone is feeling ok. Can't wait for the nausea and hunger pangs to ease off - it is annoying to be so hungry and then not able to eat much! Scan is 12 weeks to the day on 1st April. had an early scan with my DS (due to having high bp when not pregnant) so it feels like a long wait!!
