Oooh, just saw your message on t'other fred, Orcs. Will give the Nappisan a go.

Scorpette · 01/03/2011 10:17

Oooh, forgot to mention: Pinch and Punch for the first of the month

I am utterly bamboozled by wot's best nappy-wise. Eco disposables, cloth, summat else, I dunno! HALP!

Medee · 01/03/2011 10:25

Have you tried The Nappy Lady website, Scorps? You fill out a questionnaire and get a personal recommendation of which reusable is best for your needs.

Thanks medear I have been pondering the same thing! My friend has offered me hers but they have been on two babies' bums already. Would that make be a bad mummy? It would certainly reduce the carbon footprint of the nappies themselves? I have been thinking about going for a mixture at first to see which works best for us. Having a summmer baybee at least offers lots of line drying opportunities

I am going to have the rudest of rude awakenings aren't I??

LadyGoneGaga · 01/03/2011 10:41

I used theNappylady too. They are great. I just bought everything they said and it was exactly right - saw us through from birth to potty training. And most councils give you about £50 to put towards cost of your cloth nappies. Feels like a biggish outlay upfront but if you add up the cost of disposables it is really worth it. And especially if you plan to have more than one child as they will last for lots of bottoms. And you get a good resell price afterwards too when you're done breeding.

Think we had Bumbles, used with Motherease wraps and nappy nippas (stretchy things that hold nappy on - better than poppers as infinitely adjustable). And a few Bimbles for when they have tiny bums but you can use the Bumbles from birth too - they just have big sumo bums. Very cute though.

Medee · 01/03/2011 10:42

My friend has three babies, and I don't think the batch of Motherease was new to her, so no, I'm sure it doesn't make you a bad mother!

LadyGoneGaga · 01/03/2011 10:49

No, Bitey - I loved seeing my lovely white nappies drying on the line! Made me feel proud (if a little Stepford-ish). Fine to use used nappies, they won't be worn out. You can always buy new wraps and some nice fleece liners if it bothers you.

Helps to have a tumble dryer for rainy days/winter though.

LadyGoneGaga · 01/03/2011 10:51

And def use disposables for first few days of meconium poo - no-one wants that on their nice new nappies! We also used diposables for holidays or long days out.

rocketleaf · 01/03/2011 10:54

i am a bit bamboozled by nappies as well. Although have been chatting to my cousin and she has given me a few different types to try out. She also said to use disposables for the first 3 weeks as the black tar stuff that comes out at first would ruin reusables. SHe said the one that worked best for her was weehuggers and shes given me one to try out but she did say every baby and mum is different. I love them tho cos they do really funky covers, and i also have loads of inserts left from when I did a nappy design project a few years ago.

yey for the pram and cook off antics, meds did you get the bee in the end? I have been watching loads of eBay at the mo but I think we want to get the 2010 modal as its been improved quite a bit (plus TB said the other day its the one thing he doesn't mind spending up on, hot wheels fpr our PFB :D) panicing lightly as miniscule size of freezer at mo!

nice to see you orcs!

rocketleaf · 01/03/2011 10:57

oh and happy Daffy Day to the welshies. St DavidsSt DavidsSt DavidsSt DavidsSt DavidsSt DavidsWine

(took me ages to figure our what those where :S)

Scorpette · 01/03/2011 11:09

Never heard of the Nappy Lady - will check her out now, cheers :)

We live in a 1st floor apartment, so no opportunities for endless washing and drying (open plan lounge-kitchen with deafening washer/dryer as well as no line-drying possibilities). Was just going to get some of those eco ones you can get in Boots/supermarkets, but still worry about the true eco-ness, the effciency and the price. And what's best for baby's bum, of course.

On that subject, I've had the runs for 48 hours. I think my eyebrows are the only part of my body still working properly!

Orchid12 · 01/03/2011 11:16

Thanks Rocketbomb Smile. Things have been crazy of late so have been reading but not posting.

We used/will hopefully use again Bambino Mio nappies. They worked a dream for us and a few other people that I know. Although a friend a mine also had them and didn't get on with them at all. Best to try a few types to see what you think when bubs is here (unlike us who just bought a whole load of the same ones and hoped for the best!). My top tip is to try Ebay - I bought most of ours off there from people who clearly thought they would use re-usables but then changed their minds and were selling brand new nappies for a big reduction Smile. If you keep the paypal receipt you can send it off to the council and use it to get your £50 or whatever you are entitled to in your area.

Ivegotmrbitey · 01/03/2011 11:18

Careful scorps hope you haven't just jinxed yourself into a pair of Dennis Healy brows!

Thanks for good advice orchard will have a nose at lunch time Smile

rocketleaf · 01/03/2011 11:25

Ohh good tip! I am loving ebay at the mo, although havent actually bought anything!!! I didnt know you could get money from the council for reusables either! Good stuff.

Scorpette · 01/03/2011 11:35

Too late, Bitey - my Dad has novelty brows and thanks to the wonders of DNA I have to use eyebrow gel on mine to keep them sane Blush

Am intrigued/excited about the £50 thing - do you get it for the first lot of nappies you buy or is it for cloth/special types? GIMME MY CASH!

rocketleaf · 01/03/2011 11:54

They make gel specifically for eyebrows? :o Shock Sorry to hear you have added another ailment to the list score Are you going for some sort of guinness record? Wink I am sympathetic honest (oh perhaps that wasn't a good idea) I was bemoaning to TB yesterday that I feel like I am just constantly moving fluid through my body, if I'm not drinking I'm weeing and if 'm not weeing I'm blowing my nose or crying :o But at least I'm not pooping through the eye of a needle so I'll quit complaining!!

Even more confused about nappies after looking on that site there are so bloody many different types! Oh well hopefully Nappy Lady will sort me out.

Scorpette · 01/03/2011 12:05

MAC brow gel, Rocket. A lifesaver.

I too cannot stop weeing - can't go more than 2 hours without pissing like a racehorse! At least my kidneys are in tiptop condition, eh? Grin

Re: growing list of bleh: perhaps it's not only my bump that needs to be part of my freak show appeal... Wink

laurielou · 01/03/2011 12:30

Nappies - are they complicated then? I just thought there was a choice of reusable & non-reusable Confused. Crap, something else to think about.

My weeing is odd. I always wee'd loads due to being a good girl & drinking my 2lt of water a day . I'm still managing the 2lt, but don't actually seem to wee as much. But when I have to go, I have to go quickly & then its just a little splish. Normally these symptoms would have me screaming "water infection", but I've been like this entire diffment, all samples are fine & I don't feel unwell at all. I think Bug must be drinking the water, & s/he's going to come out all bloated Grin

AlpinePony · 01/03/2011 12:35

Just a word of warning about washables. They don't fit well under clothes.

LadyGoneGaga · 01/03/2011 12:35

Only get money back from council for cloth, Score - to discourage the vast volume of disposables ending up in landfill sites and taking aeons to decompose.

To be honest though you wouldn't be doing "endless" washing with reusables. I did an extra wash every two days which isn't too bad. And you're doing extra washing with a baby anyway. Are you still hoping to move by the way?

Also washing machine noise counts as white noise which puts a lot of babies to sleep Grin

I must admit I find the eco disposable ones a bit leaky/crap, but so much depends on whether you have a fat/thin tall/short baby etc with thin/fat legs. I had a thin, longish baby and thus found my ones to be great. I prefer Huggies on the disposable front for newborn. Loads of people rave about Tesco's own brand too.

LadyGoneGaga · 01/03/2011 12:38

Interesting point, Alps. We never had a problem with MiniG clothes and reusables. He was slightly more cuter and fatter bottomed in clothes but they fitted fine. But he's skinny so prob more room anyway and in disposables I found the waist would be too big if the trousers fitted on the leg. If you have a big, chubby baby then maybe the reverse?

owlbooty · 01/03/2011 13:01

Laurie I know exactly what you mean - where the bloody hell is all the water going? I can only think it is making extra blood/amniotic fluid/snot/something else liquidy and useful.

I am in nappy denial. My baybee will not poo, no no no.

Bites I see no problem with using pre-worn nappies though - surely they will be softer and lovelier?

Thank you to those who pointed out that I am mental re. not feeling kicking for a couple of days. Today the little bugger (sorry, darling offspring) has turned around again and I think I can feel something again thus am calmer. Honestly, what a faff.

AlpinePony · 01/03/2011 13:04

gaga I had a very skinny wee boy - they were fine under sleepsuits, not so great with other clothes.

Anyway, if anyone is interested - carrots' website is having a closing down sale and she's selling them cheep-cheep.

Ivegotmrbitey · 01/03/2011 13:08

No movements here Sad might try and have a can of coke later see if that provokes anything!

My hideous ex-next door neighbours are still hated in the street for flushing their disposable nappies. It was twenty one years ago and they have now moved but people still shudder about them.
