Hi All,

Have been away for a while but I am going to have another go at keeping up with you all. I usually go on mumsnet on my kindle and it is harder to post stuff and read long threads.

Have had my 20 week scan finally - at almost 23 weeks, which prompted me to come back on. All fine with the baby, but I have been classified as a high risk pregnancy and put on meds and monthly scans :( - have to kiss goodbye to the thought of a home birth, which is a bit disappointing.

Will try and read through the thread now and see how everyone else is getting on!

BArbielovesken have seen some of your name threads. Just wanted to say I think the idea of using your mum's name is a lovely, meaningful one. Plus Anne is a lovely name, really elegant and understated :)

Jer79 · 08/02/2011 18:38

Supersunny Yay, so it's not just age!
Clarkiee All of it will hopefully come together really nicely - good test results, a nice nod from the vendor, and a lovely half term.
Tabitha I am relatively new here, so forgive me if you've already gone over your concerns on here, but what is making them categorise you as high-risk? Try not to be worried, which is probably so much easier said than done.

I'm with Moomin, keep any iffy comments about your baby names well at bay whatever way you can. We are telling no-one. Now I know why people say 'we'll see what he/she looks like and decide', which always seemed quite bizarre. It's just a nice way of saying 'sod off, you'll know when the kid does because then you can't annoy me'.

But on here, is a totally different thing, it's a bit like talking to yourself if you were someone who actually knew what they were talking about. So bring on baby names those who have them and want to share Smile

Jer79 · 08/02/2011 18:45

Sorry Sarah, forgot to say yes, watched OBEM and the heart lady was really strong, but the forceps delivery was terrifying looking. It's even got its own thread on MN today.
Every time I watch it I think, 'Ok, so don't be a moany bag screaming madly even when you aren't having a contraction and just want attention' which one or two (hardly any) seem to do when they get on the gas and air, but I know I'll be the one moaning like cattle in a field when the time comes, pain or not. Some of those women are just so dignified and amazing. Not me, I'm betting.

8rubberduckies · 08/02/2011 19:17

Sarahmumtobe are you booked into the unit at Paulton? If so I am v jealous; I looked into it when pregnant with ds, but it was just too far from Bristol.

Sorry to hear you're classed as high risk Tabitha and can't have a home birth? Is there absolutely no chance?

Looking forward to seeing OBEM, am sky-plussing them and am a week behind at the moment.

jbells · 08/02/2011 19:38

hello all, hope everyones ok i have just got back from pg yoga i am another who wud def recommend it, i have always suffered with the top of my spine and among other things it has helped so much with this

clarkie- i get asked constantly have i ate and am i feeling ok and told i look grey, normally by my mum who also told me the other day u dont ever glow in pregnancy do u, u always look grey and ill (thanks mum lol)

tabitha im also being nosey sorry and wondering wot reasons they wud class u as high risk, hope your not to disappointed u cant have the home birth

as for names i cant keep anything to myself lol, i had originally thought i wud not tell anyone gender and then i thought hmmm but then i will be bought loads of neutral clothes i doubt i will be able to keep names to myself either, we had decided on DD being mia b4 she was born and then the day after she was born changed it to Miah and added the middle name jasmine, i will prob keep changing my mind up untill afta this one is born to Grin

takethatlady · 08/02/2011 19:43

OBEM was brilliant ... though it put me off the pethidine for definite (well, I say for definite .... Grin). That woman was so out of it! (Plus my mum had too much pethidine with me and basically forgot to keep giving birth, and I wasn't making much of an effort either and it all took so long they thought I was stillborn. My dad says that one of the nurses was humming the death march Grin under her breath in an attempt to signal to one of the other nurses! I know this is not the usual way with pethidine, or with nurses, but it has made me think twice about it!!)

Both ladies did brilliantly in the end, I thought.

Yay for all the other ladies who had scans yesterday! Congrats on your boy mainlymaynie and girls for the rest of us?

We're keeping the name secret in RL too ... we told people we were thinking about Edith when I was pregnant in August (for all of a few days) and the raised eyebrows and 'tactful' suggestions of alternatives put me off doing it again.

Sorry to hear you're high risk tabitha - at least it sounds like they're going to monitor you carefully and give you lots of support, and you'll get to see the baby lots of times before he/she is born.

Woo congrats on the buggy jasmine. What did you get?

gdmts1981 · 08/02/2011 19:55

Evening all - am finally getting round to a catch up and post :)

Nice to read about all the scans etc - we are having a boy as of the scan last Friday so I can happily confirm to friends etc that yes as suspected I am growing a penis Blush

Have finally bought something for baby - he now has a moses basket and a pack of plain sleepsuits.. am starting to stress that there seems to be so many things that need to be bought but the amount of choice for simple things like bottles, nappies etc is a bit daunting Confused

Are you working from a shopping list or are you just trying to go for things as you see them?

8rubberduckies · 08/02/2011 19:58

OBEM minute will be interesting viewing for me... I had pethidine and forceps Shock.

moomin156 · 08/02/2011 20:08

Just watched it on replay.........Mmmmm forceps looked a bit scary.
TTL i love the name Edith.....dont listen to anyone.

me to 8rd it did make me wonder was i that spaced out Hmm and also made me realise y i was in so muchpain after them toture instruments were used lol

TabithaTwitchet · 08/02/2011 22:34

Thanks for concern everyone :). I have a problem with the blood supply to the placenta - as the baby gets bigger there is a risk that my blood pressure will go up to provide the placenta with enough blood - therefore risk of pre_eclampsia. And also a risk that the baby won't get what it needs, so possibility of growth retardation :( Bit scary but at least they are monitoring things. Agree Takethatlady it will be nice to keep seeing the baby so often.

Merlion · 09/02/2011 04:36

I can't remember who was asking about the Tiger girl thing I think it is mainly because they are supposed to be pretty fierce. It's all very strange as I personally fail to see how a whole bunch of people born in the same year can have the same character traits Hmm. There are way too many traditions/superstitions and I get very Confused. After birth is a whole other story as the Chinese generally employ confinement ladies for a month after birth they generally allow the new Mum time to rest (not a bad thing), cook special meals for them that is supposed to help your body to recover plus for the real traditionalists you are not supposed to leave the house for the first month or bathe or wash your hair (ewww)!

Tabitha I hope all continues to go well. I also have monthly scans although that's mainly down to the practice here rather than anything else but all those extra views are nice to see and can be reassuring. Great news on all the other scans.

Mumofprawn I'm with you on the gender expectations. I have an older brother and DH has a younger sister so it seemed perfectly 'right' to me that we should have DS followed by a little girl. I was delighted when we found out we're having a girl as it is exactly what we are both used to from our families IYSWIM.

Barbie argh. My SIL is due about 3 weeks after me too and am hoping we don't have an issue over names. She had her 20 week scan yesterday too but they weren't able to tell her what she's having so we may not have an issue in any case.

I had some bad news from home. My Grandma has managed to fracture a vertebra. We have no idea how as she hasn't fallen or anything - I suppose just old age. The pain killers don't appear to be working so she is in a lot of pain and they have left her horribly constipated. I know she will be putting a brave face on it but deep down panicking as my Grandad died (although a long time ago now) from a tumor in his back so I'm sure that'll be playing on her mind. We had prior to this decided that dd is probably going to be named after her - using her middle name as first name. DH though has sworn me to secrecy but I'm now wondering whether I should tell her mainly because I know it will cheer her up no end.

Sorry that was a bit longer than intended!

KaraStarbuckThrace · 09/02/2011 07:02

Merlion - aww your poor grandma! I think it is lovely you are going to name your dd after her!
I had a gender expectations to - I figured there would be a nice symmatry if we had a girl, as DH's DB has 2 girls and a boy, and now DH will have 2 boys and a girl!

Did I mention the travel system arrived Monday night?

LisasCat · 09/02/2011 07:25

While thinking about the forceps delivery on OBEM, reminded me about something annoying I recently discovered from my first birth. DD was being a stubborn little moo (two weeks over, had to be induced twice, still not keen on seeing the big wide world), and towards the end they got out the ventouse machine to suck her out of there. Well she clearly decided a cone-shaped head was not the look she was going for, and shot out seconds before they used the vaccuum cleaner on her, but some daft bint in that delivery room had already written it on the notes, and didn't want to scribble it out. So when I booked in this pregnancy, low and behold my medical record says DD was delivered ventouse. The medical professionals all look at me a bit suspiciously when I correct this, believing me to be some crazy mummy who is in denial about the use of the ventouse.

jasmine51 · 09/02/2011 08:53

Merlion sorry to hear about your grandma, I hope she gets some good care. Me and my 98 year old grandad are both on lactulose so when I see him I take him a 'bottle of something strong'..always makes him laugh.

TTL I got a Baby Jogger City Elite - I'm not sure why its called a 'city' because its possibly the last buggy you would want to take into a crowded area and lug on and off busses..but it fits well with our off road lives. DH is trying to work out how to adapt the chassis to take snow skids. It was the folding mechanism that sold it to me, I cant do catches and peddles so one handed/one handled system works for my blonde brain.

Clarkiee Have you not got your parvo results back yet? I am guessing it must be negative and they have forgotten to tell you because it should take this long surely? My goddaughter has a blood test last week and was confirmed yesterday.

Jer still no response re the Bugaboo - will chase it for you

Kara what travel system did you get...and have you played with it yet?

Excited today, the colour swatches arrived yesterday for the bubs room curtains (how posh do we sound!) Now its daylight I'm going to be up there all day trying them out for size.

Have a good day x

jasmine51 · 09/02/2011 09:25

Me again, sorry - I had a question re sterlisation...I mean bottles here not the DH. Do I need a sterliser or is there a simple alternative? I cant stand the thought of yet another kitchen gadget but I dont like the idea of boiling pans in the kitchen constantly. I have been offered most other stuff by friends but for some reason noone has a sterliser..is there a trick I'm missing here.

Jer79 · 09/02/2011 09:36

Jasmine Experienced hands might have a good answer to this one, but as I understand it, the Avent Microsteam Steriliser tops a lot of polls - no boiling pots or other messiness.

8rubberduckies · 09/02/2011 10:03

Jasmine I would go for a steam steriliser if I were you, no boiling saucepans when first awake and stumbling around rubbing sleep from your eyes etc. Most of them have settings that keep things sterilised for 6 or 12 hours, so you can set it to have everything in it sterilised for when you wake up, so it's all ready to go. Well worth losing a bit of worktop space for.

You could go down the sterilising tablets route, which you use in a big bowl of cold water, but it still means having something hanging around on your work top. You can also get some quite compact microwave sterilisers if you have a microwave, but the length of time the stuff inside stays sterilised for is shorter than the electric ones.

moomin156 · 09/02/2011 10:26

Just had a play with the 'customise settings' on my mumsnet.........all a bit confused now Confused

NoMoreChocBiscuits · 09/02/2011 10:51

Pleased to see I'm not the only one wanting to keep name ideas to myself Grin We have middle names picked out as they are family names, but our first name list will probably go out the window when we meet the LO, so it's just easier to keep quite.

Had 20 wk scan take two yesterday and all is well. LO decided to moon us Grin.

And my goodness I don't think i've ever seen the word forceps used so many times in one place. Def a good thing I avoid OBEM!

Good to read about all the good news people are having with scans, shopping etc. It really brightens a gloomy day Grin

Advice please.......i am usally a size 14 ( pear shaped) and have been thinking about leggings to wear. I would normally never dream of wearing them as i have chunky legs.......can i get away with them in pregnancy with tunic tops or would i just look fat and feel self concious

OP posts:
jasmine51 · 09/02/2011 12:31

Im sure youll look great Moomin - team with shirt dress...seems to be more flattering than 'hey look at my bump' tops! sounds like I'm a similar shape and my leggings will be surgically removed when labour kicks off!

KaraStarbuckThrace · 09/02/2011 12:45

Jasmine I got that Graco Vivo system that Banarama linked to, haven't played with it yet going to do so at the weekend - want to make sure it is okay and no bits missing or damaged!

8rubberduckies · 09/02/2011 12:53

Moomin I am a size 18, although tall, and just like Jasmine51, my black leggings have become grafted to my body since pg. I never wear them with anything shorter than about 1/3 of the way down my thigh, so as not to shock the general public, but they are soooo comfy. In the summer, the shorter ones are great under dresses if you are paranoid about flashing dimply thighs like I am.
