Hi all - I've not been posting but I've been catching up with everyone's news pretty regularly. Got my scan on Friday and really can't wait! Especially as I had some bleeding over the weekend and although everything seems ok (baby's heartbeat good and strong Smile) the doctor told me to "take it easy" until the proper scan on Friday, just in case something's a bit dodgy with the placenta or something.

To be honest, it was hard to tell from the mumbling how worried I should be - and very unclear what "take it easy" is meant to mean! When pressed, they suggested I might want to not go to work, but they were so woolly about it.

So, I've said I'll work from home but my lovely boss said I should rest properly so I'm kind of half working from home, a quarter watching daytime TV and a quarter tidying/sorting/admin. I'm normally a great fan of taking it easy but it seems harder when it's been ordered by someone else! You'll have to keep me company or I'll go slowly mad... Grin

Anyway... on the antenatal class thing. We've booked NCT classes (I'm still friends with someone I met as a baby in my own NCT classes, so hoping to meet some nice people locally) and hypnobirthing classes - but to be honest they're as much for my DH as for me, as he's really really nervous about the whole birth thing. Midwife said there's no need to do NHS and NCT classes, and the NCT classes are much more local to me.

It's my first time so no idea whether either set of classes will be useful, but I like to feel as prepared as I can - a losing battle, I fear! Wink

HalleLouja · 07/02/2011 14:27

Seeing as the Oxon ladies are in danger of taking over the thread Wink. I was wondering if there were any Herts / North London mums around. I live in one but was brought up in the other.

Woo to scans though.

8rubberduckies · 07/02/2011 16:12

Hello new folks who have popped up over the weekend Smile.

I've had a pretty full on weekend - been potty training ds; we're on day 3 and only had 2 1/2 on target so far Hmm. I have spent most of the weekend scrubbing the carpet, and I can safely say this has been the most challenging stage of parenthood yet!

Thanks Humania for your comments about Ina May and Hypnobirthing - I am really getting stuck into the book now but not sure when I'm going to find time to practice the hypnobirthing techniques. I'm hoping that I'll be able to apply some of the stuff in the Ina May book effectively from a hospital delivery suite with midwives I've never met before...

To answer whoever was asking about whether people were going to go to any antenatal classes if not on their first, my area have specially designed sessions for 2nd/3rd/4th etc time Mums (NHS classes). I'm going to go along, as they are a good way of meeting people.

I went to my local NHS classes when pg with ds1, as felt we couldn't afford to stretch to paying for the NCT classes. I met some lovely people and we kept in touch by email, but didn't get much out of the actual classes. Apart from a memory I cannot shake off of having to practice breastfeeding using a doll and a hand-knitted booby Confused. I have moved into a different area since having ds1 so am hoping the classes might be better this time.

Jbells I'm a big fan of Moro for eating in London; it's in Exmouth Market which is really central. It does Spanish / North African food, mid-range prices, and is bloody delicious! They have just opened a tapas bar on the same street as well if you want something more laid back.

TTL and CMH well done on the scans!

CitizenOscar sorry to hear about your bleeding episode - I had a placenta bleed when pg with ds due to having a low-lying placenta; it's really scary at the time but all was fine in the end (and was a good excuse to not do much for the duration of the pregnancy!)

Clarkiee · 07/02/2011 17:36

I've signed up for NHS classes- didn't think to look into the NCT ones. Wish I had because the dates for NHS ones seem to clash with lots of different things.

Bit worried about weight gain. Googled 'twin weight gain by 24 weeks' and one site says 24lbs by week 24!! I've put on less than a stone so as I'm 23+1 I've got alot of eating to do this week!! Going to ask the midwife about it on Thursday. Bought a pregnancy mag with an interview with Myleene Klass and she says put on 3 stone in 6 months- yeah right!

mrswantstobeamum · 07/02/2011 17:37

Hi all, I hope everyone had lovely weekends. We did quite a lot of shopping for baby stuff, which is so much fun now that we know it's a boy and aren't confined to gender-neutral colours! We bought some things, namely a Medela Swing breast pump, some clothes on good sales at Pumpkin Patch and Baby Gap, and a few vests and rompers at John Lewis (have you seen the Green Baby and Organics for Kids ranges? In a moment of weakness, I couldn't resist). We also chose the nursery furniture and bedding, which I feel was good progress!

By the way, if anyone else is looking to buy a Medela Swing breast pump, at Mothercare they are currently £10 off in-store only, and if you register for the baby&me club, the welcome pack has a £5 voucher you can use for breastfeeding equipment as well, bringing the price of the pump to £75.99. Given that Medela doesn't often go on sale and many places charge around £100 for that pump, I thought that was a good price. Mothercare also currently has 10 percent off pushchairs and car seats, and the baby&me welcome pack has vouchers for £20 off pushchairs of £250 or more and £15 off car seats or bases of £130 or more, so now may be a good time to buy if you're looking for anything in that range. I'm thinking about getting a Maxi Cosi Cabriofix as they are compatible with Bugaboo Cameleons (which I'm still stalking on E-bay).

Also very excited about some great new maternity clothes which I bought on good sale on Asos, mostly mamalicious. I would definitely recommend giving their clearance page a browse: www.asos.com/Women/Clearance/Maternity/Cat/pgecategory.aspx?cid=6413.

BPrincess, I've got a bit of backache too, which I'm hoping pregnancy yoga will help eliminate (found a local class which I'm starting tomorrow).

Clarkiee, good luck with your offer on the house - let us know what happens! Good luck also with your decision about maternity leave and your discussion with your boss.

Sasamaxx, hope you're feeling better.

TTL, as a first-timer I haven't taken either the NHS or NCT classes before, but I've registered for both and can already tell there will be a huge difference. My local NHS course is a one-off four-hour session, but the NCT course consists of eight two-hour sessions over a six-week period, including two women-only breastfeeding sessions. I've consistently heard fab things about the NCT classes, and most mums I know still regularly keep in touch with the other mums from their classes, even years later.

Welcome to the newbies, and congrats to those who have had their scans. Looking forward to hearing the news about today's scans!

HalleLouja · 07/02/2011 17:42

Clarkie on one of the conception threads I was on we used to whack Myleene with wet fishes. 8RD might remember the wet fish brigade. She is annoying. My friend sees her in her local park. Wonder if she is no annoying "off duty".

I have a small bump and although the m&p jeans I bought are dead comfy they keep slipping down.

Am going on a NCT refresher course - I didn't make the original one as DS was premmie so can learn about birth now!

I used to love my Medela swing it was fab and much better than my manual one.

Clarkiee · 07/02/2011 17:58

ha ha halle Myleene seems intelligent, musically gifted, bloody gorgeous but really nice!!! So I want to dislike her but I can't (did anyone go to school with someone who was intelligent, sporty, popular, gorgeous etc but so nice that you couldn't even dislike them?).

Thanks mrsmumtobe waiting on vendors response to house offer. Nobody in the estate agent/morgage world seems to be in any sort of rush (been waiting ages for valuer to value our property before our sale is approved). But I'm in a bloody rush!!!

HalleLouja · 07/02/2011 18:00

We didn't like her as she kept going on about how hard it was to conceive number 2 but rubbing it in people's faces she was preggers. We were the thread struggling to conceive no 2 so she wasn't popular.

Clarkiee · 07/02/2011 18:14

hmm she does mention the 'finding it hard to concieve comments' in this interview too- I can see why it annoyed those trying tc at the same time.

MoP - I think they would tell you if there was anything to be concerned about wrt to the size/weight.

foetal weight guide I think according to the chart you are well within the expected range.

Yey on all the scan news!!

jbells · 07/02/2011 19:03

evening all, went to c the midwife today and got measured, i am 25 weeks and measuring 25cm which i thought was wot it shud be but on the graph it lies inbetween the 50 centile and the ninty centile so is above average, hope i wont be having a 9lb baby lol

hello to all the new posters

and thanks for advice on london places 8rd moro sounds delish

also congrats on all the scan news, i am desperate to find out for sure wot we r having for sure on sat at that 4D scan especially as im hearing more and morepeople knowing wot there having.

me and DP r having lots of name debates, i even put up a name thread on MN but the results r very varied so no help there altho most people seem to prefer either Luca John or Isaac John problem is DP wants to spell luca lukah for some unknown reason Confused which i am really not sure on, i also like Jackson John and Zachary John hmmm decisions decisions cast your votes lol

i didnt do the antenatal classes last time and would really like to this time problem is i think there daytime and i have DD with me all the time and no one to look after her on the day and second there is no way DP will take the time of work to come to them and im pretty sure everyone goes as couples Hmm

Clarkiee · 07/02/2011 19:15

Congratulations mumofprawn did you think that you were having a girl? I thought we were having boys (sonographer thought so too) only to find out three weeks later they were girls!
Both my babies are smaller than average but each time they check they have always grown, which is the main thing! If they were particularly worried they'd be doing extra scans so try and put it out of your mind xx

jbells my favs out of those are Zachary John and Luca John (agree with you that Luca looks better spelt that way too).

jbells · 07/02/2011 19:28

thanks clarkie- one of his stupid friends told him he knew a girl called Luca spelt like that...i have never known a girl name luca, told him i prefer lucas anyway..ahhh naming boys is so difficult Confused

Hallelouja of course I remember the wet-fish-slapping! I was worried about getting fish-slapped myself after getting upduffed within about 6 weeks of the the thread starting! Have you namechanged since? Do you still go on that thread? I sometimes think about popping in and saying Hi but is it a bit insensitive?

Jbells I like Zachary, Luca, then Isaac, in that order Smile.

Congrats Mumofprawn Smile.

jbells · 07/02/2011 20:15

thanks 8rd

i like jackson, zachary, luca and isaac i that order

DP likes luca, isaac, zachary and jackson in that order this cud be a difficult choice hehe

LisasCat · 07/02/2011 20:58

Evening all. Well had the scan and all is good. And we're having another girl. I'll be honest, my preference was a boy, just because it would be nice to have one of each, but another girl will be lovely. No ideas about names now though.

And the reason I hadn't felt movement was because I have an anterior placenta. Bit odd that it hadn't been spotted/mentioned before, but there you go. The weird thing was that, even watching her squirm around on the screen and try to get away from the sonographer who was pushing around to try and see the gender, I still couldn't feel a thing. That placenta must be huge!

DD is adamant it's a boy. I think she's just mucking about, as she doesn't seem cross when we say it's a girl - just laughs and says no, it's a boy.

Oh and maybe the Luca/girls name comment was in relation to the Suzanne Vega song. It's one of my favourites, so it's what I think of when I hear the name.

HalleLouja · 07/02/2011 21:13

I was Loujalou and still visit the thread to pass fish for them. Would never complain about symptoms but they are a nice bunch and I (hope) its nice for them to see someone who also struggled having some good news. Hopefully shows there is light at the end of the tunnel.

8rubberduckies · 07/02/2011 21:35

I remember you Loujalou, like the namechange Smile. And you are right, I should pop in and say Hi Smile.

sasamaxx · 07/02/2011 21:40

Just posted on the old thread - duh!!
I am really behind not - been feeling rubbish the last few days, but on the mend now. Off to catch up!
Hope everyone is good! Smile

MainlyMaynie · 07/02/2011 21:42

Scan went really well, we're having a boy. I have been convinced all along it was a boy (and I knew exactly when we conceived, late on the day of ovulation, which made it much more likely to be a boy), so I'm very pleased! Would have been pleased with either of course. He's measuring a few days ahead and has a massive head but quite short legs.

Lisascat I've got an anterior placenta too, only been able to feel movement the past couple of days.

Is anyone thinking of a home birth? DH and I discussed it for the first time today and both really like the idea.

BPrincess · 07/02/2011 21:47

What on earth is all this talk of fish and slapping Confused??!

What I can tell you is I spotted Myleen out and about near where I used to work (London South Bank) once and there were paps following her, and it was a cringe-worthy sight - her pretending not to know they were there, yet playing up to them something rotten, strutting around, swishing her hair, laughing in a really ridiculous, fake way with her friend... it was nauseating!

Good news on all the lovely scan results. Isn't it all so exciting these days!

And what is it with people wanting to know what names you've chosen. We want to keep it to ourselves, and fair dos I reckon. A friend of mine asked if we'd thought of any names today, and I just said, oh, not really, still thinking... 'Oh, I bet you have, you're just not telling me!' she said, quick as a flash. And so what?! And why should she have the right to know? And why not just let me have that one little thing to keep to myself? Aaagh! I was quite cross, as you can imagine. And as it happens we haven't decided yet anyway.

However, on the plus side, we are off for a week in the Canaries tomorrow so I'll be back in a bit. Hope everyone has a good week, and looking forward to lots more lovely scan stories when I'm back.

Bye!

moomin156 · 07/02/2011 22:03

Back from work......congrats on the scan results.
The meeting was half sh**e, could have been better, could have been worse. Didnt need to get myself in quite the state i did over it, must be these darn pg hormones, at least its done now and i can sleep well tonight ( well apart from the peeing, not being able to sleep on my tummy, the kicking and the heartburn LOL)
