Evening all.

Jasmine - is your DH still talking about coming back or has he sorted things out with work?

Aww Moomin. My friend's DH who is in the RAF got posted a similar distance away from where they lived, she was really worried about it as she had never lived away from her family before but she adapted really quickly and made lots of friends Smile She didn't go back to work as where she is living is back of the beyond, but she would have had to pay for childcare where as back home she had free childcare on tap. So it probably wasn't worth her going back anyway. Is there a possibility of another posting coming up or will your DH have to take that one?

Glad its just not me that feels its such an upheaval. I could cope with 70min away and would even commute to work that distance for the 3 months required for maternity pay. We will lose about £5000 if i cant return and thats a lot of money! This just isnt even possible for a day visit and although my parents are fit and well they are just turning 70. I know im 39 but i love haveing my mom down the road.
The plan is that we will move after the bean is born. I will stay here for 6weeks or so and DH will commute for weekends like he does now........
Oh well, just need to accept it and be positive. I married into the army and i knew this was the way of life. It will be alright once ive moved, the thought is probably the most daunting

OP posts:
neenewps · 03/03/2011 08:10

The thought of moving is daunting. When we moved up here I had so many mixed feelings about it as we were moving over 8 hours away from my family and I knew that we were going to start trying for a baby.

I won't lie and say it has been easy, as at times I have felt really alone. Plus the fact that I couldn't work as soon as I found out I was pregnant and then waiting and hoping for an admin job, which I thought would allow me to meet people has just never materialised.

So I got myself involved with NCT and then went along to Bumps and babies groups. Started going to Aquanatal and have just started yoga. Also met up with one girl from the local board on here and also a group of girls from another baby board, who were also new to the area.

You are a lovely person moomin and I'm sure you won't have any problems making new friends. I am just as worried as you about not having any family close by to help me with the LO.. hopefully you won't be posted to Andover for too long and the next posting is back closer to your family.

Are you going to be in married quarters? I don't know much about army life even though my brother is in the RAF but is there a sense of community in married quarters?

Like you say stay positive... and sending you a cyber hug {{{}}}}

jasmine51 · 03/03/2011 08:16

mummy I like Lancaster...got stuck there once when I had a burst tyre on the M6 and had to hang around for a few hours whilst it was sorted...made myself sick on licquorice! Ah, happy memories!

Kara DH is still moaning and threatening to walk out..but he is a bit of a drama queen! I see his point because its a rubbish place to be and if any tiny thing makes his life more difficult out there it makes it even more rubbish...but he is prone to being a doom monster and overblowing the downsides of things!

Builders in da house today...must go and get more tea bags...and more sugar....

jasmine51 · 03/03/2011 08:23

Oh and super...yes, it shows you were doing it right! I love that stretched feeling I get the day after my yoga..makes me feel a bit righteous!

AlmightyCitrus · 03/03/2011 09:30

MummyOfPrawn Lancaster is really nice. Theres a canal to walk along (my friends parents live on a barge there), park with a butterfly house, Castle, museums, loads of shops etc. It's not a big place so everything is close together, easy to walk round. You're only minutes from the Trough of Bowland which is beautiful. Not far from Morecambe and not too far from Blackpool.
We go there loads.

I'm sure you'll soon settle in.Smile

Mummynumber2 · 03/03/2011 11:10

Thanks so much for all the congratulation Smile

Right ladies, we have a month to plan a wedding! I'm loving all the suggestions nurse HalleLouha and TTL. What is that dead crow cake all about?!!

Those dresses are gorgeous TTL but I don't think I'm actually going to get a wedding dress as such. I'm thinking more something like this Probably either in blue of green. I'm just not sure about a 7 months pregnant bride wearing white....

So, it's a 10.30 ceremony ( the only time they could do) with around 20 guests, including all of us. Then I'm trying to find a nice hotel that does brunch to take everyone to. We'll then all go back to our house for champagne and cake (made by DSD1). About as simple and hassle free as it gets I think!
Hopefully DSC's will go to their mums or to my parents for the night and we may get a honeymoon night!

Reading what else has been going on and will reply now.

CMH1stbaby · 03/03/2011 11:16

mummy that sounds like a very nice stressfree wedding! and the dress is beautuiful - haven't seen that site before but going to have a browse now!

jasmine51 · 03/03/2011 11:21

mummy sounds like a lovely plan. What part of the country are you in? I found a great florist wholesalers nr Birmingham which sells masses of nicnacs - I made my headband from stuff from there, and the table decorations...oh and the favours.

Mummynumber2 · 03/03/2011 11:29

Moomin and mummyofprwan I can see that this is a difficult time to be moving and am thinking of you both. As others have said I think that it can be quite easy to make friends when you have a small baby as there tend to be other people in the same boat, their lives having changed and not going to work etc.

Sorry to hear so many people have constant heartburn and indigestion. It sounds terrible. I'm very lucky not to have had it at all, I think this may be because I'm not able to eat anything with much taste, which may be the way forward for you all! Stick to pasta with cream, cottage cheese, salad, peas and toast! Grin

Mummynumber2 · 03/03/2011 11:35

x posts Jasmine and CMH. Thanks. I think I'll put a lot more work into the party next year! They have a shop in Kensington that I'm going to try to get to on Saturday. And I've just found out that they do a range in John Lewis too.

I'm in South London Jasmine so shop in Birmingham no good! But thanks for the reminder, I'll probably need some flowers!

neenewps · 03/03/2011 11:43

Oooh Mummy if you are in South London you can go to the New Covent Garden market for your flowers. Tons of flowers there and you can either DIY or there are florists there.

I got married in London last year and we had a picnic in the park next to the London Eye.

8rubberduckies · 03/03/2011 12:06

Moomin and Mummyofprawn I feel for you having to move when pregnant. I don't know either place, but I am sure there will be positives once you get there, and as others have said, it is a great time to make new friends when you have a little baby, so many things put on everywhere for new Mums, and you will already have at least one thing in common with all the new Mums you meet, so will always have something to talk about!

My Mum lived in family quarters in Plymouth when I was a tiny baby, as my Dad was in the navy, and always talks very fondly of the 2 years she was there and the really close friendships she formed moomin. I think you'll find there will be a lot of women in the same boat as you.

Your wedding plans sound great Jasmine. I have already come across those dresses on my hunt for a wedding outfit for April as a guest, and I think they are lovely, but my budget won't stretch to them. Brunch in a lovely hotel sounds perfect, and I'm sure you'll have a great choice of places to go living up there in "that London" Grin.

I wish I was craving some crazy foods - I am craving hot food like sasamaxx though, as well as sugarsugarsugarsugar, which is exactly the same as last time around. I can't get enough ice cream at the moment Smile.

We are having an allotment party this Saturday afternoon, and I am really looking forward to it, because as I tend to be collapsed in bed by 9pm every night it is the closest thing to a social engagement on my calendar! We have bribed persuaded 7 friends to come and help us clear all the weeds and brambles and dig over the plot, and creosote our shed, in return for a couple of cans and some nosh. I am in control of catering Smile. I have been wracking my brains for something really cheap I can cook to feed 10 hungry mouths, so any inspired ideas gratefully received. I have only come up with either chilli, rice and sour cream or a split pea curry with chapatis so far.

Oh yes, and had some great news yesterday - my SIL is due a baby in September, so little one will have a cousin to play with!

Supersunny I think a bit of gentle stretching sensation around your bump is a good thing, but if it is more painful than that maybe have a word with your yoga teacher to check you're not pushing things a bit too far.

Sorry if I've missed any other major bits of news from earlier in the thread, but my memory aint what it used to be 6 months ago!!!! Grin.

NurseSunshine · 03/03/2011 13:25

Wedding plans sound lovely MN2 and that blue dress is gorgeous. Though obiovusly my suggestion was far more classy and sophisticated Grin

Allotment party sounds great 8RD, for food I'd probably go with a big pot of chilli or curry like you said and then some dips and chips and things so everyone can just dig in and help themselves.

I am very happy today as my washing machine is FINALLY fixed so I can wash things! Am down to my last pair of jeans and t shirt so it's just in time! Hmm I'm actually happy at the prospect of spending all day doing loads of washing. I must be ill Confused

Got a question for all you experienced mums/more imaginitve first timers: What toys do you buy for a newborn?! I've got a couple of lovely teddies and am going to get a baby gym thing but other than that I am at a total loss Blush

8rubberduckies · 03/03/2011 13:53

Nurse, think colourful things for them to stare at and get their eyes focussed on, plus stuff to practice grasping at for when they are a few weeks old. We had a musical cot mobile for ds, and a string of big wooden colourful beads, and a couple of rattles (one with a bell on that really got his attention). Oh, and the string of toys you get to string across the front of buggies are lovely. The black and white baby books are meant to be very good for developing their sight too very early on.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh, I've got all excited about impending newborn-ness just writing that paragraph! Smile Smile Smile Smile

jasmine51 · 03/03/2011 15:04

nurse blimey toys? hadnt even thought of that..whoops. Have you seen the youtube clip of the baby laughing at ripping paper?...probably about as sophisticated as toys will get in our house for a while!

Builders now causing clouds of dust to rain down on my head and I'm in the room below them! So glad this is being done now and not later in pg

By the way...dough balls and nutella at Pizza Express...OMG...nutella had better be good for you or I'm screwed!

BarbieLovesKen · 03/03/2011 15:19

It is good for you, Jasmine - I means, its just hazelnuts and loads of milk (calcium!) and a tiny bit of cocoa. Wink.

Sick household. DD is on antibiotics, poor ds is so, so sick and dh is on the way to the Doctors with him. Im in work with a stinking cold and headache and I have to go to college straight after here Sad. On the plus side, my mums home!!! Smile and tomorrows Friday - yay!!

NurseSunshine · 03/03/2011 15:27

Oh dead Barbie, you've had it rough the last week or so haven't you :( Get better vibes to you all.

Jasmine, nutella is one of your five a day, didn't you know? My mum used to just plonk my brother down in the middle of the kitchen with all the pans and a wooden spoon and he'd be happy for hours!

Thanks for the suggestions 8RD, I think a trip to a toy shop is in order

NurseSunshine · 03/03/2011 15:33

Oh dear, not oh dead. Sorry!

8rubberduckies · 03/03/2011 15:51

A wooden spoon was ds's toy of choice for quite some time (good for chewing on sloppily when teething, good for hitting things with and making nice noises), in spite of all the pretty tat lovely stuff gifted by family when he was born.

moomin156 · 03/03/2011 17:26

well another day closer to maternity leave. I have no idea how i will cope at work when i get even bigger as its hard work now.......even my bump is weary LOL.
Trying to be more positive today......
Does anyone know if you can pay back your 3 months leave purely with annual leave that has been accrued whilst on mat leave?? If i reduce my hours, i will have more annual leave than days to work.......

Mummy that dress is gorgeous, prefer the blue it depends on your colouring!

Jasmine - poor you married to a drama queen! I hope he does sort himself out.

You can make yourself a treasure basket with lots of things in such as wooden spoons, natural sponges and loofahs, scraps of material to help baby explore different textures. Little plastic pots filled with dried beans and pasta can make baby rattles.
I used to take DS to a tiny treasures group and they had small plastic bottles filled with coloured liquid and glitter for babies to play with.
