Hi All,
Been a bit AWOL since the arrival of Tom - who will be 8 weeks tomorrow
Have debated putting an edited version of the (long over-due) birth so not to worry anyone due, but despite everything shows there is nothing to be nervous of.
Was booked into the "home from home" until as wanted the birth to be as natural as possible, with limited pain relief (was terrified of epidural) and limited intervention, as units run by midwives.
Waters broke on New Year?s Eve in the middle of a meal with family. Trip to hospital to check us and they done a trace on baby - all fine, no contractions
24 hours, check up again - still no contractions, but baby had a good heart beat.
48 hours since waters broke return to hospital. As still no contractions am no longer allowed on the unit, and get transferred to the ward for an induction the following morning.
3/1/11 - Was told to eat breakfast as not able to eat once the induction starts as there is a higher risk of needed further intervention.
Had a maccy d's (something comforting about crappy food!) and then the midwife sets the drip. There is a problem getting the drip to flow - despite the saline going straight through, the oxytocin wouldn't flow. After fiddling for a bit finally starts flowing. 9.20 am told I could expect to meet baby in roughly 12 hours.
All this time we have been on a monitor (since being admitted the night before). I had one mild cramp then baby's heart went from 140 bpm to 40 and then nothing.
The midwife was moving the monitor around on my belly trying to pick the beat back up, and after a few moments hits the emergency alarm
The room quickly filed up with various staff, all talking at once. The original midwife talks to me explaining what people are doing and who they are - but I was trying to focus on remaining calm not to affect the baby's heart further - which was still not being picked up.
As I was still not in labour, and baby's heart had been down for 8 minutes by this point I was told I needed a crash c-section.
The theatre had already been prepped for a planned section, so I was wheeled straight in.
I had not had any pain relief as wanted to see how I got on - due to the baby's heart having remained low they wanted to do a GA - but as I had eaten they were not happy to do this, so set up the epidural.
The hardest thing was trying to keep calm to not distress baby further.
I lied about the local being active - they do a local on the site for epi so it doesn't hurt so much as I wanted them to get on with it ASAP - so can confirm when push comes to shove it doesn't hurt that badly (which was one of my fears)
The second I was numb they started - 1st cut at 9.51 am, and Tom was born screaming at 9.54 am
I was a bit sore once the epidural wore off - but was moving fine by Tuesday evening, only slightly tender but could walk around ect without any issue. Just needed to be cautious lifting and bending - keeping it to a minimum.
Although it was not a bit how I'd planned - I can not praise the staff enough. My son was born healthy and I was ok also.
We did end up back in hospital a week later but this was un-related.
If I had known how it was going to go, or had thought "what if" scenarios when his heart beat dropped I would have been a mess - so have told my experience quite bluntly to show no matter what happens so long as you are well looked after, it will be a positive experience.
Can see we have had a couple of BFP's since my last read - so congrats!
Glad everyone?s pregnancies are going well - I do miss having my baby safe in my tummy as he was all mine - but nothing beats having him here!
I seem quite detached from the birth - and to be honest until I heard him cry I tried not to feel anything at the time - so if anyone wants to ask anything I am happy to share but dont want to worry anyone as with details unless requested - as the most important thing to remember is you will be with experts!
