Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
crazybutterflylady · 03/06/2011 11:29

Just a quick one highheels to say I went up one size in knickers and they were fine. I went to Matalan and got 2 packs of 5, high legs and shorts. The shorts were rubbish because they were too baggy for the pads (nice). So would defo recommend high legs.

I also got a nightie with button front and a cheap dressing gown in a size too big. It felt like a nice treat in the hospital to get into new things after my shower so I would recommend it!

Also make sure you get the big maternity pads. You'll definitely need them the first few days and they are better than the thin always type ones because they are more cotton like so you don't feel like you're sticking to them (sorry for tmi but needs must!). I found the always ones irritated my stitches more so am still in the big ones despite having very little blood loss now. I wore two on the first day, the midwife told me to and I found it really helped in terms of comfort and meant I didn't leak. I found them in Boots, hope that helps!

ToriaPumpkin · 03/06/2011 13:50

Tomboy I swear we must be in sync in some way, just one wipe for me today but definitely there. Have taken it as a sign to spend the afternoon eating chocolate and watching 4od! Hope you're feeling better today Brew

As a side note, I'm pretty sure it was caused by me climbing ladders and overdoing it painting

cherrycobbler · 03/06/2011 18:22

Just a very quick one to say very belated but huge congrats to crazybutterflylady on the birth of your gorgeous girl! And WOW re managing the whole thing on TENS alone, that is amazing, you must be pretty chuffed with your toughness!!

Still struggling a bit here - C is lovely but not a very settled baby and does not like to sleep. Hope to return to the land of the living soon and post properly.

crazy Love your birth story but am a bit :o that they sent you home 2 cms dilated, they kept me in when I went in and was also 2 cms and had him within 4 hours! I wouldn't have wanted to go home!! Well done on just using a Tens, I did too and almost punched the mf when she suggested I take it off as it was getting in the way in the end Wink

HH definately cheapo, I went up 2 sizes and was glad of them as I was really sore after. I think I got primark ones which were only something rediculous like £4! Agree with crazy about thick pads, the padding helped me sit down too Blush Don't get a thick dressing gown as the wards are all really warm. Also bring some really nice wash for afterwards, not too scented but something relaxing as a treat. Also lipbalm, I was so pleased I had that as the air seemed really warm and dry in the ward.

tomboy and toria hope the bleeding stays away x

TomboyWife · 04/06/2011 15:12

Toria I've just got a bit of pale red after cleaning out our car and putting all its contents in the garden shed (the car is going in for a re-spray). I was pretty tired by the end of all that and in fact made DH do the last little bit on his own. We really are bleed buddies. Hmm

highheelsandequations · 05/06/2011 12:22

Well survived the 'health promoting week' at work, not sure I felt very healthy after it though. Walking about on Friday in the heat nearly had me on the floor. Still very proud of myself as on top of running the orienteering for three afternoons (and all the traipsing about to set up and then collect in) I also managed to take my register class on a 4 mile sponsored walk :) Did spend yesterday completely useless though, got nothing off my list done so have to get on and get useful things done today.

Will definitely be on the hunt for big, high waisted, high legged pants this week. Thanks for the tips bunny, crazyb and mumnerves. Problem is there are no useful shops here so might have to resort to ordering online, or asking my mum to buy some and post them up! Don't know when I'll have the time or energy to head out somewhere with decent shops for the day! Have also started stocking up on big maternity pads from boots, am assuming I'll go through a lot so going to buy quite a few packs in advance to save having to run out to the shops after pip arrives. This might be a strange question but crazyb how did you wear 2 pads? Do you mean one on top of the other? And does that work? Any other tips on what to pack in my hospital bag very much appreciated. Have bought 3 cheap button front nighties, have yet to find a thin, dark coloured, long dressing gown that's not too expensive.

cherry hope you get back to the land of the living soon. I have to admit that I'm slightly terrified at the thought of the first weeks and the sleep deprivation.

toria and tomboy hope the spotting has gone away again. Think the two of you need to take it easy, hoping you are both sat with your feet up, cups of tea and lots of chocolate biscuits lovingly provided by your DHs.

Hope everyone else is doing okay. 3 weeks of work left and think I'll be counting the days by the end of this week. Also away next weekend to a wedding, which I am looking forward to but at the same time thinking it's going to be a very loooong day. Still when we get back from that it's only 2 more weeks of work, then hopefully I can finish all the little bits and pieces in the house that have been annoying me and spend a few days relaxing as well :)

ToriaPumpkin · 05/06/2011 19:24

HH My mum got a lovely thin, dark blue dressing gown from Matalan. Any good?

Tomboy It sounds like you're having the same as me then, everytime I overdo it I get a little bit of pink or red blood, terrifying, but it generally goes away when I calm down and take it easy. My MW said it's probably exactly that and just to rest!

Bleeding went right away and then I was properly thumped (made me jump!) several times and have had lots of movement since. All quiet atm but have just driven for several hours and am barely awake myself so can't expect her to be awake really!

crazybutterflylady · 05/06/2011 21:29

hh yep, one on top of the other. The midwife told me to do it and it worked, didn't leak through. I only needed that for the first day...the boots ones are great.

Meant I didn't ruin my new (cream!) dressing gown in hospital. I couldn't find a dark one and as it was only £12 - Matalan - I thought if it got ruined I wouldn't be upset...but am still using it!

I hardly used any of the stuff in my bag, but snacks are a must. I had flapjacks and lucozade sport and both were guzzled after the birth. Take your phone charger! Face wipes were useful too, put some nice bits in your wash bag for the shower. Make sure DH takes a clean top (Tabitha did her first poo on DH's hoodie!). You need your own towels, take a plastic jug for your first wee in case you need the loo before the shower (MW insisted I did mine in there as it would hurt much less and she was right! - in light of this take flip flops for the shower hehe), you need breast pads and a nursing bra, umm... buy some magazines and don't read them, put them straight in the bag! Think that's about all I used and I had a mahoosive bag! Apart from coming home clothes of course, I took maternity stuff as it was comfy and I knew it would fit.

Take nappies for the baby as they don't have a lot to hand out. Take a few changes of clothes, we had 2 changes in the 10 hours we were in because of sick - they can swallow a lot of mucus during the birth. You'll need a cardigan, blanket and hat to take LO home in too, make sure the blanket is coloured and won't get confused as being the hospital's.

If I think of anything else I'll let you know :)

highheelsandequations · 05/06/2011 22:40

Right, have just ordered 2 packs of granny pants and a dressing gown from matalan, dressing gown is light blue (no dark ones online) and will clash with my nighties but never mind, for 7 quid I can't complain!! Thanks for all the tips, will be re-reading your advice with my notebook ready to jot down suggestions tomorrow crazyb.

bunnygirl80 · 06/06/2011 00:52

hh another tip re maternity pads - if you feel a little bruised after the birth, put one under the tap then freeze it before wearing it. It loses its absorbency once it's frozen so you need another one underneath or just sit on an old towel. I never bled more than a normal period after the first 24hrs, but the big maternity pads made sitting down much more comfortable.

I took a massive hospital bag, and didn't use lots of the stuff in it Grin I definitely needed snacks (pack separate ones for your DH too) and energy drinks. You'll also need mat pads, breast pads, and lasinoh. I took a mix of trackie bottoms and maternity clothes to wear. The best thing I actually took was my make up as I felt so much more human with a bit of concealer and blusher on (it also meant I looked fab in all our photos Grin).

Definitely take clean clothes for your DH - William did his first pee, first poo and first vomit on DH Grin I took a mixture of warm weather and cooler weather clothes for William, in both newborn and 0-3mth size.

Don't forget your camera and spare batteries for it, your phone and charger, and a list of people for your DH to call in the order you want him to call them in once the baby has arrived.

I took, but didn't use, my ipod and a good book. I only packed the book at the last minute as I knew I was going to be admitted and not allowed to leave without having had a baby due to my BP being dangerously high, so I prepared myself for a long drawn out stay. As it was I had a fast labour and once you've had the baby you loose interest in books (I still haven't finished to one I took and William's 7mths this week!!!)

OneOf8 · 08/06/2011 15:37

Hi All!
Congratulations to all the new mums since my last post! As I have to soon return to work, I spent as much time as possible doing everything for my son, as feel bad about having to return to work - but know for us it is a must at this stage.
Hoping to go P/T in the future once we have a bit of savings behind us!!

Being a mum is such hard work - and riddled with feelings of love and guilt - but I wouldn't change a thing!!

I just wanted to add to CC I wish I had done a formula feed for one feed per day at the start to bulk my man up a bit as he was so weak and unhappy - This will give you the much needed rest, and if you combination feed you know baby is still getting your goodness as well as giving you time to get back into the swing of things.

There are so many things to feel guilty about - doing your best shouldn't be on the list!

Not sure I will get time to read back through all the posts - but will do my best!!

Bellaby · 09/06/2011 11:41

Hi All
Sorry for not being around but wanted to update you. I have been keeping an eye on the board and many congrats to all the new arrivals!

Our little girl was born by ELCS on 16th May weighing 6lbs12oz. Everything went really well and it was a wonderful positive experience. The recovery had been a lot quicker than I expected as well. Not quite sure where the last 3.5 weeks have gone though - a blur of seemingly constant feeding but we are starting to get some blocks of sleep at night.

Good luck to everyone else with their pregnancies. I will continue to lurk

Lots of love

Bellaby
Xxx

Congrats bellaby Come join us on the postgrads when you get time Smile

TomboyWife · 10/06/2011 07:28

Bad news from me. I think I'm miscarrying. Sad

On Monday I had bleeding that looked like day two of a period. After about five minutes, it stopped. Yesterday I had it again and it didn't stop. Same amount of blood as a normal AF, same amount of abdominal pain. It seems to be tailing off as of this morning, but I don't feel pregnant any more. I feel un-pregnant and on about day three of my period.

I have my (ha ha) booking appointment on Monday, so I guess I'll ask for a scan to confirm then. I doubt I'd be seen before then anyway, what with the weekend.

Damn it, I don't want to start over. Sad

haloflo · 10/06/2011 09:01

Huge congrats bellaby & fab to hear from you oneof8

tomboy Am so sorry to hear this, I really hope that somehow you are wrong and everything is ok. Will be thinking of you Monday.

bunnygirl80 · 10/06/2011 11:09

tomboy so sorry to hear what's happening. Sad I really do hope that you're wrong and everything turns out ok. Thinking of you x

raspberrytipple · 10/06/2011 13:24

Tomboy will be thinking of you and keeping everything crossed that you are wrong and it will all be ok. Perhaps you should ask to see a doctor before then to put your mind at rest over the weekend? Then if everything is ok you can at least rest at ease until your appointment on Monday?

Sorry to barge in, I always lurk in here!

TomboyWife · 10/06/2011 19:10

I don't think there's much doubt about it now. Felt pretty normal this morning, went to work today, but late this afternoon I started getting cramps that just got worse and worse. Shortly after I got home I started passing bright red blood with clots. I'm sitting on the sofa now in a lot of pain waiting for DH to get back with paracetamol and super-absorbent sanitary towels. If this isn't a miscarriage, I don't know what is. Sad

ToriaPumpkin · 10/06/2011 19:17

Oh Tomboy I'm sorry. I've got everything crossed that this isn't the end for you

TomboyWife · 10/06/2011 20:24

Warning: graphic post. Not for the squeamish.

That was not how I wanted to spend a Friday night. I was in really awful pain for about half an hour and just wanted to push. The same instincts that kick in when giving birth perhaps? In any case, the pain very suddenly lessened and a couple of minutes later the "products of conception" came out. I thought seeing this would upset me, but it didn't. By that point I was feeling really matter-of-fact about the whole thing and just wondered what was wrong with the bean that caused it to fail.

DH has gone back out, this time for ice cream so we can comfort eat, though weirdly I'm not particularly upset, at least not for the moment. I think I did my being upset in the run-up and now I'm just thinking about trying again.

What do I need to do now? I assume I should be checked out to make sure everything that should've gone has gone?

ToriaPumpkin · 10/06/2011 20:34

You do need to be checked out, but I don't know by who, sorry, I'm not much use. Perhaps call NHS24 (or whatever the English equivalent is, NHSDirect?) they should be able to advise you.

I'm so sorry this has happened. Enjoy your ice cream and I hope you and DH are ok.

raspberrytipple · 10/06/2011 22:27

Oh tomboy I'm so sorry. You should ring your gp out of hours, they won't mind but you need to tell them what happened. Big virtual hugs hunny. xx

LankyLegs · 10/06/2011 23:29

Oh tomboy I just logged on to have a lurk and saw this. Am really sorry this has happened and I can't imagine how you are feeling. Get yourself checked out and be really bloody good to yourself. Life is shit sometimes. No other words can describe it. Xxxx

mumnerves · 10/06/2011 23:30

tomboy I'm so so sorry! :( Do get yourself checked out as you could have an infection. I'd ring your GP surgery which should either put you through to an emergency Dr or give you a number to ring. Big hugs and do look after yourself x

bunnygirl80 · 11/06/2011 04:46

tomboy I'm so sorry. Sad
