Birth centre shininess is probably the best compromise. There are "only" five rooms at mine, so it's feasible that they might have to send me away, but they say it's hugely unlikely. Guess they just have to give the warning? I was surprised at how few people were up for it in my NCT group - most were heading to hospital.

I'm planning to stay at home for as long as I can - like what Igs did - then head to the birthing centre down the road. So long as I get through the risk assessment next week.

Oooh, and I saw the midwife today and apparently am 4/5 engaged! Not, therefore, anywhere near ready to go, but Berwhale is warming up for an appearance!

PrincessBoo · 18/01/2011 18:11

Just wanted to come in and say that I wasn't suggesting anyone should call a contraction anything other than a contraction Boxy, merely commenting on Ina May's book which is great.

Muser · 18/01/2011 18:12

I think the birth centre is what I really want, because there is lots of space and I don't have to worry about anything - especially noise. I just like the idea of a homebirth, but I like the idea of one in a big house with no neighbours and lots of space. Not in my flat.

I'm thinking about it again as I have a midwife appointment tomorrow and they'll do the referrals.

Good news on the 4/5ths engaged. Go Berwhale! Hope you get your referral done ok.

PerfectDromedary · 18/01/2011 18:20

Fingers crossed.

I love, love, love the idea of a homebirth - it sounded so idyllic when my friend described the aftermath. Midwives cleared everything up, made friend and husband a cup of tea and left them nesting happily with their new baby. But I'd agree; in my own house, I'd be totally up for it. In our current flat? No way.

PrincessBoo · 18/01/2011 18:22

Do people mind that I occasionally post in here about my experiences and with my thoughts even though I'm not actually pregnant? I never mean to come across as irritating or patronising and only ever want to be helpful. Even if I am an oversensitive soul who needs to turn a DHB word like contraction into rush because I'm so weak minded Hmm

Scorpette · 18/01/2011 18:23

I'd never thought of that (birth centre being full), Muse Confused I shall put it out of my mind by telling myself it's just one of them there fancy Lundun probberlems.

Go Berwhale! 4/5 engaged, eh? (Disclaimer: I don't actually fully understand what this means apart from the laying time growing closer Blush)

I think I shall be taping a recording of last night's OBEM to my birth plan (when I write it, ahem) with the words 'One of these, please' written across it in marker pen Grin

I saw summat odd but cool earlier - when I changed my top, I saw a distinct pulsing at the top right of my bump. Was completely unrelated to the rise and fall of my breathing or my own heartbeat. The Lad must've had his back pressed up there with his heart near my skin, because I couldn't feel any kicking/movement and it was an odd shape too.

Medee · 18/01/2011 18:33

Speaking for myself, not at all, Boo.

I'm going for the Midwives Unit, which I assume is the same as a birthing centre and is in the Mat Hospital so near the labour ward should it be required. I do hope to see it one day before the big day itself.

Muser · 18/01/2011 18:33

It's unlikely to happen Scorps, so don't worry. It could happen with use of a pool in a hospital where they only have one. But I think my birth centre has 8 rooms, which ought to be plenty.

Boo I do not mind at all that you post here, is good to have lots of perspectives.

I have just done another bit of organising and phoned the bank to ask them to send paperwork so I can turn my account into a joint account. And I have opened another account just for me. Idea being my current account becomes a household one, and my personal one is just for me. I find the idea of a joint account quite scary.

Scorpette · 18/01/2011 18:36

Shurrup Boo, yer daft bugger I enjoy your posts, as a) you're cool and b) any advice from those who've been there, done that is always welcome, AFAIK. And whilst some of us might not have thought much about the meaning and implications of a word like contraction, I personally don't care what anyone calls them, so long as their choice is empowering for them. Hell, I'm probably going to lose my mind and refer to them as 'stretchy ow-ows' when the time comes! I think 'rush' is quite a cool alternative; gets across the urgency without the implications of pain and tightness that 'contraction' has. Also easier to say rush than contraction when you're having one Grin

I read the Gaskin book yeeeears ago, before I even met TYF (baybee-mad? Moi?). I might pick up a copy now; I remember it as being v powerful and reassuring.

PS Boo, you'll be in here bemoaning pukiness and cankles fo' real, soon 'nuff

PrincessBoo · 18/01/2011 18:39

Thanks loves.

Scorpette · 18/01/2011 18:42

Yeah, I think the only prob here will be the pool being in use, Muse. Think there's only one

We've been talking about doing that 3rd, joint account thing too. Also feels weird not having my own personal one - even though a joint one would benefit me most, durr.

PrincessBoo · 18/01/2011 18:46

At our hospital they have only one room with pool, so they have some 'birth pool in a box' kits which they sometimes will set up there, but you have to ask as they don't tell everyone about them. Worth an enquiry though mebbe Scorps?

Scorpette · 18/01/2011 19:13

Good call, Boo, cheers Grin Am making a note of that.

PrincessBoo · 18/01/2011 19:16
CluckyKate · 18/01/2011 19:19

Is that 4/5 in or 4/5 out Drom???? My midwife gives the former but has been around for donkeys years. Either way, you're not lining up for a queue jump now are you

CurlyCasper · 18/01/2011 19:20

There was only one birth pool at either of my two MW unit options. But both said they had never had to refuse anyone. Mind you, we are not in a big city, and there are satellite MW units throughout the county. I have never heard of anyone not getting one because pool was occupied.

I am loving the imagery of waving to passing boats while having baby. Might take your mind of it? Non? Wink

PrincessBoo · 18/01/2011 19:24

I occupied the only room with a pool in it at our hospital for 16 hours during my labour and wasn't allowed to go in the pool so I bet some poor bugger was disappointed.

PerfectDromedary · 18/01/2011 19:26

Wouldn't dare queue jump, CK. 4/5 out - just starting to get comfortable. I have to start doing optimal foetal positioning shiz, apparently. Anyone have any suggestions?

It's if the tourists wave back, that's the problem...

Scorpette · 18/01/2011 19:31

I am picturing the tour guides on the boats breaking off from their spiel to shout 'and breathe... BREATHE...' through their loudhailers Grin

What is optimal foetal positioning, pliz?

CurlyCasper · 18/01/2011 19:35

scrub the floors, snorkel in the bath (ask cheggers, sleep on left etc etc - all to get baby head down and on the best side to avoid breech or back-to-back.

Unfortunately, mine still did face first (instead of crown), which was ouchy enough.

ginhag · 18/01/2011 19:53

Hi honey I'm home :)

And fucking knackered.

Vaguely caught up, scorp good news re docs, and you may like amytriptalline, is quite a chill-outy thing which can help you sleep (doesn't make you drowsy but does nice calming thing which can help with insomnia, as well as other stuff) so maybe a good side effect for once??

Bah to you lot and your fucking shiny mw units and your bollocking waterbirths [sulkyface]
Nah, not really, though I am a bit Envy....but as mentioned before I plan to stay home for ages, nip to hossie, have a quick sneeze and come back home with the World's most mellow baby, so I shall be just fine.

Most of the rest of what I've missed seemed to be OBEM which is fine cos I don't watch it.... But oooo did a pesh have a scan? Was it BB? [woolly brain]

boo we love you, and your woo (poetic) :)

rocketleaf · 18/01/2011 19:55

bitey my thoughts exactly, wonder if the gas and air might give the illusion momentarily Wink

I was warned I might not get a pool birth if there was someone in it already, going to ask about it properly at next MW appointment, see how often this actually happens. I also wondered if you could set up a home birth pool in one of the normal rooms but don't think there will be enough room. hey ho, just gonna have to hope for the best!

CurlyCasper · 18/01/2011 20:24

I have found a new website I heart. rocket you might like this

ginhag · 18/01/2011 20:56

Going to bed. Mr gin still not back, has been taking apart the tradeshow stand and will (hopefully) be driving home in a big van now. Really wish he could've got back earlier, need cuddles + had yet another 'being dumped' dream last night which was obviously just the usual pg shite but still horrible.

CurlyCasper · 18/01/2011 20:59

Awwww gin you know I love you. Now come here and let me do some groping squeezing. Will watching hideousness help? If so turn to Channel 4 in two mins. Hope he's home soon and lavishes muchos love upon you. Have you sorted a date to finish work yet?
