Congratulations Annie! I'm very jealous, 9 more sleeps until my scan [sigh]!

Well after OBEM I'm thinking a water birth looks good, however that girl looked far better in her bikini than I do now so not sure about that aspect Wink

Off to make a coffee now, you've all got me craving it...

LittleBeaut · 18/01/2011 14:06

I was thinking a water birth looked good after watching it last night and well I tried everything else so I may see if I can give that a go. I have never had a birth plan before, have any of you?? What did you put on it?? But I think even if I hunted down the same bikini top as that girl had on last night I doubt I would look any good in it... I swear I'm the same size as she was full term now!! Well maybe not the same size, but I feel it ok?? haha

hahaha betty 9 sleeps will fly by - honest!! I'm going to wait until I get home for another coffee... will only need to wee AGAIN if I have another now Hmm

ohanotherone · 18/01/2011 14:30

I can't believe it's nearly 12 weeks!!!!!

Rehune · 18/01/2011 14:59

Hi all!
Is it too late to join this? My EDD is 08th August and I am being refered to Queen Charlotte in London for my first scan. It's my first pregnancy and we found out on a 6 week long Christmas holiday in the sun (most of which was spent by me being sick. And weeing. Alot.).

I'm already 11 weeks and just a bit concerned that I havent had a letter from the hospital yet. Is this normal? It's all exciting and scary. I'm even worried cos the nausea seems to wearing off.

I have so many questions but don't want to be a pest!

Nice to meet you all x

CappuccinoCarrie · 18/01/2011 15:00

I've just caught up on last night's OBEM. I had a water birth second time around and it was wonderful, I wore my mothercare tankini top though, far less elegant than that girl. Didn't she do well despite the uselessness of her birth partners? It was almost enough to get me excited about the idea of giving birth again...only almost though Grin
As for the guy with the fan, I'd have shoved it where the sun don't shine!
Only 3 more sleeps til I get to see...the midwife Hmm

Leilandri · 18/01/2011 15:14

Hi all

Asking for a bit of advice here from those mums unfortunate enough to have suffered with SPD.
My SIL is 29 weeks PG and has been diagnosed with SPD, she is finding it excrutiating and I really feel for her. She has been referred to a physio, and as an NHS worker will get bumped up the list, but is there any thing else she can do/take to ease the symptoms?

bettyboo83 · 18/01/2011 15:26

Hi Rehune [waves] I wouldn't worry about not hearing from the hospial. Everyone on here seems to have had completely different experiences in terms of when they've seen midwives/had scans etc. You could ring the GP or hospital to check they're received your referral? My nausea seems to have improved (dare I say it??) this week and I'm 9+3 so maybe things just ease up a bit. It's my first though so prob not the best to give advice!

I agree Carrie they were crap! I think they should have made her vomiting sister leave! lol

MrsStevo · 18/01/2011 15:32

annie - YAY! So pleased for you! You can start to relax now and embrace being firmly up the duff :)

tel1 - I really feel for you. Is there any chance you could arrange a private scan in the interim to put your mind at rest?

Vis a vis the photos, DH has taken pics of me (side view) at 7 weeks and a bit weeks (when we had the scan) and again on 8 weeks, planning to do them every week. Haven't gone with the full blown naked photos like someone (can't remember who, but I remember thinking they were BRAVE!) but done the same as cappuccinocarrie and gone with the same clothes, same place each time.

I'd never heard of a doula before but having googled it, they sound awesome :) selina - I fear we will all be picking your brains in the next 7-and-a-bit-months so brace yourself!

I too watched OBEM last night and just found myself to be Envy of the gorgeous, toned, calm-and-collected lady (girl really) having the water birth. She did make it look dead easy. I would look, and probably sound, like a whale. Would love a water birth though :)

13 sleeps til my next scan ..... might as well be 13 months as it'll feel that long. I'm also feeling Envy about all you people who are due earlier in August. I was the 18th originally but put back to 27th after scan so I feel waaaaay behind you all again now :(

coastgirl · 18/01/2011 15:33

We've just been for our first scan! I thought I was 10+3 but the woman said I was 11 weeks - I was charting so I know exactly when I ovulated and conceived so should I adjust my due date or just carry on assuming it's what I first thought?

SelinaDoula · 18/01/2011 15:42

MrsStevo
Glad you thought Doulas sound awesome! I love being a Doula!
Happy to answer any questions!

SelinaDoula · 18/01/2011 15:47

coastgirl
I would adjust your due date (the hospital will)
But be aware around that date that you could go a couple of days earlier (it is actually to your benefit as it gives you a few more days before you are classed as oficially overdue and the hospital suggest induction)
Due dates are very questionable really, I think we should have due months. Whilst some w9omen give birth at 40 weeks, its normal for others to birth at 37 or 43 without anything being wrong (it can run in families so check out your Mum's births if you can)

Rehune · 18/01/2011 15:47

Thanks betty and also, please do give advice! The more the better. It's just good to here from other women who are where you are.

The last advice I had was 16 mins ago from the cleaner at my work who told me not to watch Criminal Minds as serial killers were bad for pregnant women (although I am sure they are bad for anyone generally). She told me this although I have not actually told anyone I am pregnant so I am wary about dismissing her advice just in case!

Also, none of my clothes fit. Is it usual to start 'showing' so soon? I have been a size 6 all my adult life so my work wardrobe has shrunk to three items. Is it too early for maternity clothes?

coastgirl · 18/01/2011 15:49

Selina, I was really very overdue - about three weeks! My brother and sister were twins and they were overdue too so I'm not expecting an early baby.

LittleBeaut · 18/01/2011 15:54

I would change your dates to their coastgirl because the hospital/midwife is going to use that date from now on so... you might as well to.

Selina there is a pregnant girl on the lone parent bit that has no family over here and dont want to put on her friends when she goes into labour... can I put her onto you please?? I know you probably wont be able to be her doula like as you may not even live near never mind being due a few weeks after her, but you maybe able to put her mind at rest about a few things. She is in a right two and eight bless her!!

Leilandri is SPD when your pelvis moves?? If it is I had that bad in my last pregnancy. I had physio and they gave me a really attractive bandage thing to wear to try lift a bit of the baby weight (think you can buy a better one in mothercare now like), but from what I remember it eased up soon after I gave birth... or maybe I was too busy to think about it after Hmm

bettyboo83 · 18/01/2011 15:57

Ha ha Rehune I think that's the best bit of pregnancy advice I've heard to date! If only more people knew...! Grin

Don't worry MrsStevo, come and join us at the back end of the month Smile

LittleBeaut · 18/01/2011 16:03

Oooh not my mum was induced with both me and my brother... but not my sister who she had 10 years later!! And my two boys were both bang on their due dates... god I hope this one is, dont think I could wait Grin

tel1 · 18/01/2011 16:10

rehune I phoned the hospital today for my scan date, as I hadn't heard....

selina I wish you lived nearer so I could borrow your dopplar thing !

going to book a private scan I think, as I've completely lost my appetite now... hopefully coz I'm stressed... now got to build up the courage to call them...

I don't have a bump in the morning, but it grows during the day...

my babies were both early, but then I always had a short cycle of 24 days

Rehune · 18/01/2011 16:13

Selina I just had to google Doulas as well and how awesome. What a lovely thing to do. And also how lucky for all of us on here Wink.

betty in the last hour I have realised that the cleaner is full of good advice including this lastest gem 'stay away from wasp - no good for baby'. I suspect that she is just taking general practical advice (wasp avoidance) and repackaging it as mum-to-be advice

Rehune · 18/01/2011 16:14

Thanks tel1 I'll do that this evening. I don't know why I am nervous about it!

LifeOfKate · 18/01/2011 16:15

I've just watched OBEM. Very Envy at waterbirth girl, all calm and collected (I was a screamer :o). I would have kicked her sister out though, if she felt that uncomfortable, why was she there?!?!? Good job she had a straightforward delivery though, the sister would definitely have had to leave if it was a forceps type intervention!

DS was induced at 12 days overdue, so not expecting this one early. Am kind of hoping to be induced if I'm brutally honest, my induction went like a dream, and I would prefer not to have to make a 20 mile journey to hospital whilst having contractions :o

Great to hear your scan went well, Annie, have been thinking about you :)

SelinaDoula · 18/01/2011 16:22

LittleBeaut yes, do get her to PM me, no problem.
Rehune glad you think Doulas sound lovely. I totally agreed with the advice re serial killers and wasps!
tel1 you can get them on Amazon-
[[http://www.amazon.co.uk/AngelSounds-Fetal-Heart-Detector-Doppler/dp/B001NWDUE2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1295367711&sr=8-1}
The heartberat can take some finding, but I'm getting good at it now!
I don't have a scan date either, they'd better hurry up as I'm 12 weeks now!

littlemissw · 18/01/2011 16:49

Great news Annie!

Welcome to all the newbies & how exciting that you are a doula Selina. I planned a homebirth with my first (they really encourage it in my area which is great), but unfortunately I ended up in hospital due to complications (that I won't scare the first-timers with). Needless to say I was gutted and subsequently they have not been so keen on letting me have a homebirth again. Luckily with my second I was allowed to go home just 2 hrs after giving birth, so it felt a bit like she could have been born at home. Hopefully it will be the same again this time. Fingers crossed.

My symptoms are finally starting to ease off a bit, but like most of us I'm still awaiting my scan date & need to know bubs is ok. So, I've decided to get myself a dopler rather than spending money on an early scan. At least then I can check on baby whenever I feel the need all the way through. Question for Selena (or anyone else in the know) I've heard that the ultrasonic doplers are the better ones since they pick the heartbeat up at an earlier stage - is this right?

SelinaDoula · 18/01/2011 16:59

littlemissw
Yes, I think the ultrasound dopplers do work earlier. I picked up the heartbeat from 10 weeks, which is very early (they say not before 12 weeks). It is very noisy in there and it can be hard to find, its easy to pick up your own heartbeat and the placenta.
I used a Youtube video to help me, the babies heartrate is at least double your own, so you can tell when you find it.
I think it could worry you more if you are a worrier because it can be hard to find, but I seem to be able to pick it up easily now. Ultrasound gel is worth getting!

PS littlemissw and anyone else, I have experience supporting women after traumatic births, with previous history of abuse, twins, VBAC, previous third degree tear and diabetes.
If you want to contact me by PM I'm happy to talk through your history by e mail or on the phone if it might help or to post links to useful info and help with birth plans.
I have supported women to have homebirths after cesarean and other high risk births so if its something you would like to chat about, do get in touch.

littlemissw · 18/01/2011 17:10

Thank you so much for your kind offer S! I am really lucky & have a great support network around me, so feel really positive about labour & birth even after my experience and will certainly not be ruling out a homebirth this time. Bring it on! :o
