Sorry, brie is a runny cheese (runs for cover)

moomin156 · 18/01/2011 11:20

but then she is quite laid back......also said it was fine to have the occasional alcoholic drink, rare steak as long as its sealed well :)

moomin156 · 18/01/2011 11:25

The risk of listeriosis is very low in pregnant women about 20cases per year ( and they cannot say wether they all come from food consumption, its all good advice and im sure as long as people are sensible and make an informed choice its ok

jasmine51 · 18/01/2011 11:29

Absolutely agree - as long as not taking stupid risks then not worth getting het up over it. I think the cases of listeriosis in this country were down to pre packed salads werent they?
Have taken the view that good quality products from good quality places are fine..but not to take risks where prep or storage or provenance is not known. Would avoid coleslaw from deli counter or market stall or cafe for example...but prepacked coleslaw from supermarket = ok....having said that I'l now porbably get some horrible bug from my Waitrose stuff!

NoMoreChocBiscuits · 18/01/2011 11:35

Oh well just don't tell my DH. It's to late now because some of the brie is in my stomach (along with some cheesecake Blush). I've been eating peanut butter and last night had a runny(ish) egg. The guidelines change so often that it's hard to keep up and like moomin says I make an informed choice about what I eat and am pretty well behaved oh 95% of the time.

Thank goodness Mothercare has a save for later function because now I've found a pair of togs I like there I've taken to looking at the unisex baby clothes and there are a couple of REALLY cute things. Can't afford to impulse buy.

jasmine51 · 18/01/2011 11:40

Nomore - stop the shopping...you'll get me back at it!
I just took delivery of my Maxicosi car seat..but annoyed that I had to read the instruction book to work out how everything works..grrr. Its fab though...if I could fit in it myself I'd be in there now having a snooze, it looks so cosy!

Nice to have a scan buddy crumble 8 days to go! We're not finding out the sex (although I am tempted). Are you?

Congratulations on your baby girl Merlion.

On the food discussion I ate carbonara last night where the eggs aren't properly cooked... probably not supposed to do that.. and can I just say I really miss wine!

Sarahmumtobe · 18/01/2011 12:16

Hey all, congratulations merlion-how exciting-a girl! One more week to wait for me. Have you thought of any names? Congratulations to all the happy scans yesterday!
Hope you feel better soon kara. All this talk of yummy cheeses is making me very hungry! I have been eating slightly runny eggs and have also had cravings for smoked salmon which I ate quite a lot of after Xmas when it was cheaper-not sure whether this is safe since it is only smoked?
Waiting to hear from Doctor about lepto thing-had appointment yesterday but the GP didn't know much about it so is waiting to hear back from the microbiologist. In the meanwhile I've been very naughty and been shopping at a local maternity shop-I got a dreamgenii pregnancy pillow and some maternity trousers in sale. Think I should have my cashcard confiscated now!

8rubberduckies · 18/01/2011 12:22

Hi all

I love talking about food in pregnancy - if I was on Mastermind it would be my specialist subject!!! Peanuts are fine now, and runny eggs are apparently fine as long as they are lionmarked (i.e. from a supermarket rather than freshly laid organic ones straight from the farm).

It is the way the cheese is ripened that matters when considering the listeria risk. Basically, it does not matter whether the milk used to make the cheese is pasteurised or not, as it is during the ripening process (i.e. when a rind forms or blue veins) that listeria grows. The good news is, any hard cheese with no blue bits and no rind is fine, as listeria cannot thrive in a hard cheese environment; it needs to work with soft and squishy Smile. That means that unpasteurised artisan hard cheeses are fine.

And Yes, most listeria cases in this country are from prepacked / unwashed foods like salads.

Congratulations Merlion on your girl. We are getting increasingly certain we're having a girl too Smile.

8rubberduckies · 18/01/2011 12:23

PS - I am a daredevil - I have been tucking into smoked salmon, runny eggs, and a glass of wine twice a week Grin Grin

jasmine51 · 18/01/2011 12:36

Smoked salmon is a safe food - I was surprised about that but have been eating it constantly. Now stop talking about food!...shopping and food...oh no, I feel and unproductive afternoon coming on!

bananarama05 · 18/01/2011 12:39

8rd I read somewhere all chickens in the UK now have to be vaccinated against salmonella in order for their eggs to be sold. So in theory all eggs should be fine but I'm sticking with the lion mark ones too. Can I join you on Mastermind? I love my food and have read anything and everything I can find...and have also been having a couple of glasses of wine a week and did sneak some parma ham at new year. Like's been said before, it's all about informed decisions :)

I have my scan on Thursday, hurry up already!

knackered76 · 18/01/2011 13:07

Grin Hooray for lovely scan news today!

I ate so much president brie in 1st and second pregnancy I saw no reason to stop now! I don't eat the rind though, never have (I know, hideously fussy Blush)

I sent out a begging letter to my friends yesterday for cast offs of various things, moses basket, cradle (just incase they outgrown the basket really quickly!), etc and yet again they have come up trumps! It's amazing how keen people who don't want anymore children are to give you ALL their things. Am going to have to be careful they don't just start leaving them at my front door :)

Happy Tuesday!

swannny · 18/01/2011 13:22

crumble Moog72 Mine's in 9 days! So excited and a bit nervous. Had my doc check up today - She found my little Boblett immediately :) I listen on my Angelsounds most days and he/she is so loud :) Love it!

LisasCat · 18/01/2011 13:28

8rd you think you're a daredevil? On Friday night I had 2 (yes, ladies, you read that right, 2) glasses of wine. I am truly the devil incarnate.

(In my defence, I had one glass, and then there was about one small glass left in the bottle, and I'm sure you'll agree, it would have been downright rude to put that back in the fridge.)

Sarahmumtobe · 18/01/2011 13:38

Ooh I feel a glass of red wine may be on the cards this weekend!

79monica · 18/01/2011 14:00

You could always cook the brie to kill any potential listeria if you are worried. That's been my logic for all the goats cheese which I have eaten recently. When you are virtually vegetarian often the only things left on restaurant menus contain goats cheese so I have just been making sure that they cook it first.

My mum told me that she ate all sorts of soft French cheeses (as well as peanuts and Guiness) when she was pregnant with me and it all turned out fine Grin

Moog72 · 18/01/2011 14:06

I can't stop eating at the moment and all this talk of food and wine is making it worse!!

I have been having a glas of wine each week but I miss having several glasses in one night! :)

Moog72 · 18/01/2011 14:24

can I ask a questuion - thos of you who have been feeling movement - do you feel it every day? I haven't felt anything for 2-3 days now and it is begining to worry me. Have tried the drinking a glass of icy water trick but it doesn't seem to work...

8rubberduckies · 18/01/2011 14:24

Moog I am with you, once I have one glass of wine I could easily sit there and guzzle a few more! And Lisa, I think you did the right thing in having another very teeny tiny glass, very rude to let it go to waste (and who is to say just how big one individual's glass is to another's, your two may be another pregnant lady's one!!!)

swannny · 18/01/2011 14:58

Moog72 I felt kicks about a week and a half ago, but nothing since. I feel small tap like movements or flutters. But not very often. Is this your first? Have you tried buying an Angelsounds Doppler? I couldn't live without mine now! It's only £20 from Amazon xx

Moog72 · 18/01/2011 15:17

Hi swanny thanks for replying - this is my second but I didn't feel movement until really late with dd, but once I felt it, it was every day...

No - I haven't got a doppler but am going to look on Amazon now - thanks!

swannny · 18/01/2011 15:36

Moog72 I'm sure everything is fine. mines not much of a mover, but I know it's there. Do you know what you're having? When are you due btw? xx

sasamaxx · 18/01/2011 15:58

Congrats on the girl merlion

I've had a glass of red on a sat night a few times now - I do think the problem is that that I then hav to stop and it's miserable so not sure if it's worth it.

I've had runny eggs as well - lots of times and now that I hear smoked salmon is OK, I am soooooo going to get some tomorrow.

I didn't know that about prepacked salads - does it include the 'washed' variety?

Moog the eggs cook via the hot sauce in carbonara - in seconds - at tleast that's what I've always thought.

I swam 18 lengths this morning and have been wrecked all day - it is pathetic Sad
