moog and jasmine congrats on your scans! Can't believe you already know the sex jasmine!

Welcome to the returning ladies, too, and congratulations on making it to the second trimester Xmas Smile

Right, I have a bit of a dilemma. My scan at 12+3 is on Thursday 16th, as is staff Christmas party, which I'll only just have time to get to. I won't be drinking, obviously, and if all is well with the scan it'd be nice just to tell people the real reason why. But I don't think I should be blabbing it about all over the party without having told my boss and HR first.

Should I tell my boss I'm pregnant on Monday, when I'm seeing her anyway? I had a scan at 9+3 and saw the heartbeat, etc, and have had no bleeding or spotting or anything (though symptoms are easing off at an alarming rate). So I'm praying that things will be okay. But I really don't want to tell her on Monday when I'm not 100% sure all is okay.

Maybe I should just make my excuses at the party and tell people after Christmas.

knackered76 · 10/12/2010 12:31

TTL I would do what you're comfortable with. If all goes well with the scan then if people at the party ask you why you're not drinking you don't have to be too coy about it seeing as they are likely to know the next day. At that point it won't matter if they guess and you didn't technically tell them :)

moomin156 · 10/12/2010 12:34

i think you should tell your boss on your Monday and ask her not to say a word until you start telling people. You are then covered both ways......a) if you want to tell everyone on Thursday b) if you still want to wait til after xmas or c) your boss will know if you need to take a few days off from work

takethatlady · 10/12/2010 12:45

Thanks ladies - good points moomin. I just keep telling people and I'm so afraid of getting bad news on Thursday and having to untell them ...

Will mull it over, but thinking I'll talk to her on Monday and just be honest about my fears and, like you say, ask her to keep it quiet.

moomin156 · 10/12/2010 12:51

Your boss has a right to keep your information confidential and if they don't ( and most boss's will)then you can have a grievance against them. My DH told me when i was so scared, that telling people will not change the outcome, and if i had ( or do) have bad news then i would need my colleagues and friends at work to support me, to understand if i wasnt my usual self. I felt that this was very sensible advice.......
but you need to go with your instincts and gut feelings, and feel happy with that decision

takethatlady · 10/12/2010 13:06

You're right - it's so hard not to get superstitious. And when I think about it, it's an irrational fear of jinxing the outcome that's stopping me, not any fear that she will tell anyone (she won't).

So nice to chat it through. Thank you!

Baublepink · 10/12/2010 14:16

Can I ask those ladies who have had one, a question about the nuchal scan results? I thought they just measured the nuchal fold and if it under a certain mm then that was "ok" for the nuchal scan. Do they do/measure anything more than that? At what point do they combine bloods in with the result or is it totally seperate to the bloods? Last time there was no nuchal scan offered so it was just bloods at 16 weeks and the odds were based on the bloods plus your age plus, I guess, family history. Do they now give you an earlier odds based on the nuchal scan alone? Confused how does it work? Thanks Xmas Smile

takethatlady · 10/12/2010 14:22

bauble my nuchal isn't until next week but I think they do bloods and the nuchal measurement at the same scan and combine the results.

Interested to know if this is true though!

AbyCat · 10/12/2010 14:23

Another long time lurker/poster in the 1st due-in-June thread clocking in again. I had a few scares over the 6-10 week period & couldn't bear to tempt fate by posting again for ages!

Had my scan last week & I'm a week further on than they thought, so due on 07/06 (14+3 today). DH is still in denial & keeps talking about my giving birth to an alien (when he deigns to speak to me at all) and the heartburn is shocking, but apart from that it's all going well! Is anyone else on here pregnant for the first time?

jbells · 10/12/2010 14:48

hi abycat welcome

on the stats list all the people with DC1 next to there name are having there first baby, theres quite a few :)

AbyCat · 10/12/2010 14:51

Ah OK - thanks jbells - I thought DC1 meant that they already had one child!

Moog72 · 10/12/2010 15:00

TTL and Bauble I had bloods taken at the same time as the nuchal scan and they combines the results and sent to me a few days later. I think that is the norm currently. heh I had my DD 6 years ago they didn't combine wiht bloods though...

Baublepink · 10/12/2010 15:25

Thanks TTL and Moog. That makes perfect sense. My scan is coming up TTL, it seems to have been ages in coming up and I can't believe it's nearly here now!

Baublepink · 10/12/2010 15:26

Should say, My scan is coming up next week too TTL!

neenewps · 10/12/2010 15:45

We only get bloods taken up here. If you want the scan done you need to pay for it privately.
I haven't heard from my mw about my bloods so I'm assuming I am low risk?!

bauble when is your scan next week?

Hello to all the newbies, rejoiners and regulars Xmas Smile

My DH is taking me out tonight.. don't know where as it is a surprise for my birthday. Going to have to squeeze myself into my nice jeans - they don't fit so well but then neither does anything else currently in the wardrobe!! Hmm

moomin156 · 10/12/2010 17:00

bauble the MW told me that they combine the nuchal measurements, 2 markers in your blood, your age with your number of weeks and come up with a number. The markers are PAPP-A ( Pregnancy associated plasma protein-A)and HCG. The nuchal measurement adds another component into it to make it a more accurate figure.

As i came back higher risk with all of these combined she explained that if i had just opted for the blood test then the result would have been worse as my good ( 1.2mm) nuchal wouldnt have been taken into consideration

Hope this makes sense

Welcome back oldbies, welcome newbies and hello regulars Grin

Just a quick clock in and off for the weekend. I have a manic one coming up with ds's birthday party, inlaws, parents and siblings coming down topping off with the christmas tree going up and all the fun that entails :) Hope you all have lovely weekends and those of you who can get some rest, those of you who can't try and spend at least a small part of one of the days thinking about rest (or send moomin your resting vibes and she might be able to rest some for you as well :))

By the way, did you notice there is now an August thread . . . . now that's what I call progress Grin

BarbieLovesKen · 10/12/2010 19:43

Hi all,

Firstly welcome to all the oldies and newbies!

Apologies for such a me, me, me post but Im in such a bad mood!!!!.

Have been missing for the past few days as have been doing some major cramming for an exam this morning (that I should have studied for ages ago).

Anyway, our childminder isnt starting back until next Monday so as dh had to be in work today, and dd's school is still closed as its too dangerous to go anywhere near it (yes thats 2 full weeks off!), MIL was going to mind DC while dh and I were away (she lives 30 mins away), none of us should have been out but a case of having to be.

Plan was for DH to leave house quite early, to drop kids the 30 mins away and then drive 30 mins in another direction to work. I would leave in plenty of time to make my exam at 9.30am so I could grab a coffee in college, try relax myself (very nervous) and have a last read through all my revision notes.

DH went off, at 8.15 I got in car - couldnt get up my avenue. Took 8 attempts, couldnt get up hill after 5 attempts - have never seen ice like this. Unbelievable. Went other way, got to another very steep hill, thought I was going to make it - nope. Stuck half of car in ditch, other have stretched across middle of very narrow country road.

Very isolated, rural area. Got of car and literally just slid and slid, walked to nearest house to look for help or a push. No one there. No other houses. Rang DH in panic, is 30 mins away and shouts at me for going that way Hmm. Start to cry, cant get through to office in the college. Ring our (farmer) neighbour who has tractors and jeeps and other such things, tells me he'll be straight there but is about 15 mins away. DH says he doesnt care if hes late for work, is on his way to help.

I sit in car for 40 mins, half praying someone would come along to help/ half praying someone wouldnt come incase they would bang straight into me as they came down hill. Not one person passes. DH rings, roads have gotton so bad he cant get to me, is on local main road. Neighbour rings and tells me he is now also stuck in a jam type thing with 2 other neighbours. 9.10am Im still there and exam starts at 9.30. Finally get through to college who said I may be allowed to sit the exam if late, they werent sure Hmm.

Finally neighbour arrives and tows my car out of the way to the side of the road, I abandon it on side of the road and he gives me lift to main road where dh is waiting and he brings me to college (was 30 mins late for exam but thankfully they let me sit it) and he was late for work.

Was all worked up and upset and forgot loads in exam, also when I finally did start remembering things I ran out of time as could really have done with extra half hour. Sad

One of the examiners, gorgeous lady I caught eyeing my bump quitely snuck out and with her own money bought me a sweet cup of tea and snuck it to me in exam.

I am also after developing 4 of these gorgeous things - on my damn face!! and one on my neck, which is driving me insane. Apparantly can be due to pregnancy.www.medicinenet.com/skin_tag/article.htm

I know that was waaaay too long. Am sorry.

Barbie what a horrendous day. I am Shock just reading about it. That was lovely of the examiner to bring you a cup of tea though. At least now the exam is out of the way and you can try to relax and forget about it.
