Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Mummynumber2 I'm having my gender scan in London for £79. It's at Baby Bond. They have offices all over London I think.

mrswantstobeamum I'm feeling more fat than pregnant too at the moment. Really looking forward to that bump!

Hi all, Hope everyone's nice and cozy after the snow. Think I may just cuddle up on the sofa with our puppy all day instead of trying to venture out. I'm finding walking in the snow rather dangerous at the moment as the boots I have don't have great tread. Hopefully I can buy some better ones next week.

santamaxx · 19/12/2010 13:02

Thanks Kara - I always do treat both of us - but it still just comes back a few weeks later. Just unlucky I suppose. Anyway - she's weaned now so hopefully that's the end of it ...for now anyway Wink
I think she's quite prone to thrush in general as she did used to get it in her nappy area as well Smile

santamaxx · 19/12/2010 13:04

Oh and yes - if it comes back with the new baby, I'll be vigilant about getting treatment for us both Smile

NoMoreSnowPlease · 19/12/2010 13:15

Angry the met service promised me no snow, so why is there now snow falling past my window?

well after spending last Monday cuddled on the couch with my sick little DS I spent yesterday in bed with the same thing he had, only with a lot more vomiting (he had none, I had lots). I'm all better today, just have no energy and go faint when I stand up. Oh well having an at home day so it hardly matters.

I am sitting here with my tres sexy girdle thingy on to help my psd. Who said you can't be attractive whilst pregnant? Oh wait hang on...

jinglebellssantasmells · 19/12/2010 17:11

hello all, not long got in from work just checking in to say hello and hope everyones ok, it took me half an hour to get the snow and ice off my car this morning and driving to work and back was scary aswell as walking along the pavements

nomoresnow- i hate snow to really hope we dont get anymore :( and i am with u on the looking very unattractive lol

i also feel way more fat then pg, but 2 customers asked me when i was due today i was so shocked didnt think it was visible to anyone else yet, made me feel even fatter lol

jinglebellssantasmells · 19/12/2010 17:12

oh also i really dont know whether to get my flu jab or not, park of me is worried that it mite have an effect on the baby and cause problems like other new drugs have in the past

NurseSnowflake · 19/12/2010 18:18

Oh no Nomoresnow, hope you and DS feel better soon. I bet you look gorgeous in your girdle :)

Jinglebells I don't think I'm getting the flu jab, just because it's unnecessary. If you do get it make sure it's the one without mercury.

NurseSnowflake · 19/12/2010 18:41

Sorry that should've said "Just because I FEEL it's unnecessary for me"

jinglebellssantasmells · 19/12/2010 19:22

ive been thinking about it more bcos my mum and step dad have just come down with flu, i had decided against it b4 this, fingers crossed if i stay away from them ill beok

santamaxx · 19/12/2010 19:42

I'm going to call the surgery tomorrow and ask when I can have it I think - I was a bit uncertain as well but my pharmacist friend says I'd be mad not to.
Such a tough decision - one of the many ...

jinglebellssantasmells · 19/12/2010 19:44

i know dont know wot to do for the best :(

GoodVibrations · 19/12/2010 19:51

I've had the flu jab. Did tons of research and decided it was right for me. There was a long thread on here about so if anyone is interested I'll post a link - it gets quite heated and quite a bit of scaremongering going on but if you dig past that I found it really helpful.
P.S this seasons jab has no mercury in it

On a lighter note, DH has felt the baby kick!!! It's been so exciting. I've been getting lots of kicks today Grin

jinglebellssantasmells · 19/12/2010 19:59

wow goodvibrations thats great that your DH can feel the kicks :) and thanks for advice about the flu jab

Baublepink · 19/12/2010 20:02

Evening all. I can't decide over flu jab either. I think it's a good idea in principle however, the swine flu vaccine has only been out since last year (presumably). My concern is not the immediate risk to the baby because obviously plenty of pg women have had it and the baby has been ok during the pregnancy, but if there's anything that would only show up after say 2-3 years. (ie constantly being susceptible to flu/being born with a bad chest or something!) then the authorities say in years to come "ah yes, we didn't factor that effect in when we recommended the flu jab to pg women").

I don't know... some scary stories about pg women suffering with swine flu in the news ATM Sad but I don't think there's many (if any) other innoculations you can have whilst pg so why would the flu vaccine be different/safer? (perhaps the answer is easy to find out, I have avoided googling yet!)

GoodVibrations · 19/12/2010 20:22

baublepink the reason that the flu vaccine is deemed safe is that it's not actually a new vaccine. Swine flu is just another strain of flu, and they adapt the strains each year to cover the highest risk viruses at that time (based on the basic flu vaccine).
Sorry that's not very scientific at all, and I'm no expert by any means, but I did a lot of research at the time as I found it really hard to make a decision. It's really a personal choice (sorry that's not much help!!)

Baublepink · 19/12/2010 20:42

Thanks GoodVibrations. I've got a similar undertanding of the flu vaccine, however what makes me particularly nervous is that pg women are not usually recommended to have the flu vaccine whilst pg, or any indeed any vaccine.

Also, the current swine flu strain is enough to put previously healthy and not vulnerable people in hospital, all of which points to it not being any old flu like we know of previous years Confused.

It's the strong, virulent swine flu element to the flu vaccine I particularly don't like the idea of for two reasons. One because if the illness itself it can put healthy people in a life or death situation in a matter of days, it must be the grandaddy and then some of all the other flu's we know about. Two, there hasn't been the time to show future effects on the babies who received it in utero - how they are aged 5/10/15 etc - do they have a propensity to chest infections, are they sensitised to swine flu or "ordinary" flu strains in the future? I'm trying hard to work out the real risk versus potential or imagined risk, as it were. Sigh....

GoodVibrations · 19/12/2010 21:51

Pg women have had the flu vaccine for many years. It has never been 'pushed' (or recommended) before for cost reasons (it was restricted to those deemed high risk and pg, such as asthmatic). As swine flu has been deemed particularly nasty it has been extended this year to all pregnant women.

I know what you mean though about the lack of evidence about future problems. I took the view in the end that it was something I knew was a proven risk (swine flu) versus the unproven risk (swine flu vaccine). My GP was the one who pursuaded me though, as I trust her judgement completely (she has been fantastic over the past couple years with the problems I've had with DD, and she specialises in paediatric care). And she's much more educated on the subject than me.

I'm not trying to influence anyone either way (sorry if it comes across that way) as I really struggled to decide. baublepink you're having the same debate I was having with myself. Once you have decided though its such a relief, I was getting quite stressed about it :)

santamaxx · 19/12/2010 22:03

GV I know what you mean about trusting your GP to know more than we do. It's impossible for us, non-specialists to make head or tail of statistics anyway as it takes an expert to analyse them. I trust my pharmacist friend as he has an in-depth knowledge of all of the ingredients and I could never possibly hope to emulate his expertise.

It's so hard because you don't want to even take a paracetamol - but then you imagine the worst case scenario if you decline the jab - and it's just awful Sad

I really don't want to influence anyone either - these are just the things that went through my mind when I was unsure Smile

BarbieLovesKen · 19/12/2010 22:13

Hi all,

Oooh I feel so sorry for whoever is still trying to make the flu vaccination decision. I think swine flue was definately more prominent last year (when I was pregnant with ds) and I became really stressed and obsessed with the whole thing.

Anyway, I was involved on every thread on the subject - on various websites, researched loads, spoke to healthcare professionals etc... and in the end definately decided against it. Am still happy with decision so am going with the same thoughts this time round. Not really giving it any thought at all this time round to be honest, and dont want to anymore as I spent so much time on it last time!!!.

Really, really cant offer any advice (Im sorry) as I genuinely believe that this is a very personal decision and circumstances can be different for every individual!!.

BarbieLovesKen · 19/12/2010 22:13

flue??? pml..

mouffloncake · 19/12/2010 22:30

I took the flu shot at 6 weeks when I went to register my pregnancy with my gp. It was offered to me there & then & I didnt have time to think about it. I just asked my gp (who used to be a midwife), as my health care professional & advisor, to help me decide & she advised taking it.

I'm due to go for my 16 week check tomorrow lunctime but cant drive due to he snow & ice. If I walk, it will take me an hour & I have to deal with a huge hill, possibly icy.
After xmas, we are away & I go for my 20wk scan when we get back.

What happens at the 16wk check? Will it be the end of the world if I cant make it tomorrow?

catherineps · 19/12/2010 23:03

I think they give you the results from the blood test, and listen to the heartbeat and blood pressure and stuff. I haven't got that far but this is what I understood from when I first saw the mw. I'm sure it wouldn't be the end of the world if you couldn't go tomorrow.

Nobody has mentioned the flu jab to me, but I would have it if I was offered it. The MMR thing has turned out to be a load of rubbish and now kids everywhere are getting measles and mumps! I think you can assume anything is dangerous but life's too short for that! Having said that it's completely a personal decision and if it will worry you then it's not really worth it. But even if children in a few years time do have the things people have mentioned such as get flu easily who's to say it's because of the jab? I'll get off my conventional medicine soap-box now . . . !

1st scan tomorrow :D

mouffloncake · 19/12/2010 23:27

Good luck for tomorrow cathrine, looking forward to a report.

Merlion · 20/12/2010 05:47

Catherine good luck for tomorrow.

I have 16 week scan and hoping to find out gender too tomorrow.

For all those having bad headaches I think motherofsnortpigs mentioned you were suffering, a friend of mine told me that these are worse around this time as the baby is taking salts from your body (think similar to those you lose when you sweat and exercise a lot). Her doctor had recommended isotonic sports drinks so I dosed up on gatorade and it certainly seemed to have helped if you can stomach it! The flat stuff probably better as contains less nasty stuff!

Sorry can't be of any assistance re flu jab as not offered here at all.

santamaxx · 20/12/2010 08:35

So sick of all the snow - is everyone sorted for Christmas? The thought of battling the crowds AND the snow is not appealing
