Here's the new thread!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I'm finishing at 28 weeks, although using 4 weeks of holiday so my actual maternity leave doesn't start till 32 weeks. I can't wait! Although I only work part time I'm finding it difficult juggling looking after DS, working and pregnancy.
Had a scan today, another one booked for tomorrow, all well with both babies.

5 hours sleep in 2 days AMber! OMG! I hope you are doing okay now and have had a sleep catch up. Smile

Sorry for your loss Jesse Sad I'm with you, my lower tummy feels different, but I'm not showing (am 13 weeks)

Interesting info about TAMBA Magic. Although my initial push to join was because of the now disparaged buggy guide Grin. Also, because I live in the back end of no-where there is no twins club nearby which is a shame.

(Blime! Hasn't Supernanny got a tummy on her Hmm Secret telly watching! Grin)

Can we share info in buggies and shopping in general? Grin First question from me would be; side by side design which seem to be too wide to get through doors or one in front of the other design which look scarey long and difficult to control?

Cantdrinkanymoremilk · 18/01/2011 11:42

Buggies... hmm. They're such a big purchase. We've tested loads in the shops, and decided on the Babyjogger City Elite Sport (side-by-side, pneumatic tyres). It's £500+, but my parents are very kindly getting it for us! We chose that one because it's really sturdy, and seems good quality, so it will last. We live in the country so need something that can take a bit of wear and tear and bumping around - our main use of it will be walking around our village / countryside so chunkiness wins out over small size for us. If I lived in the city or had to heave it up and down stairs we'd choose something different, I think!

Main drawback with it is weight - it's 17kg, which is not small! It fits in the boot of my car (VW Golf), but doesn't leave room for anything else. Hmm If we end up taking it on trips more than we think we will, we might buy two lightweight cheapie strollers later on to throw in the car instead. Hope this is helpful!

For people asking when to start maternity leave, I wasn't planning to go till 33 weeks, but found that when I got to 27 weeks I was so knackered I had to change my plans. Gone part-time from 27-32 weeks, then packing it in completely.

Got my 28 week check-up and scan this week. Very excited but quite nervous. I'm just desperate to keep them IN as long as possible, if you know what I mean!

Magic8ballhastheanswers · 18/01/2011 16:06

Scanned today and twins growing really well, 4lb4oz & 4lb1oz (estimated). No wonder I am massive and bloomin shattered. Off to be fitted for a sexy pelvic girdle end of the week after physio sesh today confirmed SPD. Also lovely midwife (bereavement) just called and wants to get my date set at my next appointment in 2 weeks......Eeeeek..........I think most likely to be csec but natural (although induction) is an option.......what to do?!

Gave up work at 29 weeks. Struggled for the last few weeks though. You can claim mat allowance from 29 weeks.

Re buggies we got the city select baby jogger (tandem one - which is actually a single buggy with extra clips on the front to make it a double so doesn't seem so long).

How you doing holls? xxxx

Cerubina · 18/01/2011 17:56

Our decision on buggies is to go for the iCandy Peach which is a tandem but not very long at all and seems very easy to steer, relatively light etc. A side by side just wouldn't get near fitting through our door and in the end that was a make or break part of the decision. iCandy is not a cheap option unfortunately - I am kidding telling myself that if we'd had two babies separately we'd have had to spend more buying a single then a double pram!

tabby great news that you have a delivery date booked in and that you should get your CS. Am I right in thinking that's only a couple of weeks away now? Have you had any more tightenings etc or has it quietened down?

Hello to newbies MorningsMadness, MissyMolly, propercrimbo. Add yourselves to the list!

MissyMolly I'm another sufferer with rib pain, so I sympathise. I've decided to finish up at 30 weeks (currently 26) so it can't come soon enough, I keep having to work from home/go home early as I get so uncomfortable at my desk. Sad

Magic sorry to hear it was SPD after all. Hope the girdle will help - will they be able to give it to you straight away or does it need to be made up?

No further forward with the equipment/clothes purchasing here...the weekend flew by so quickly. I keep feeling as though the first purchase is the hardest and I need to just buy something to get the ball rolling!

crazydayz · 18/01/2011 18:20

Hi ladies do you mind if I join you? I'm 23+4 with boy/girl obviously non-id twins.

Looking forward to hearing what you have and haven't started buying and am glad I've found some like minded people who understand the shock and excitement of finding out you're having 2 babies!

MorningsMadness · 18/01/2011 21:09

Ok, updated list - Missy Molly, properchrimbo and anyone else new please add yourselves on (trying to keep dinner down so dashing sorry!)

Hope everyone is ok today Smile Welcome crazydayz Smile I'm tired and fed up, for no particular reason. At least I can stay up this late now, was regulary fast asleep by 8pm during first few weeks!

I'm also getting slightly annoyed by the constant comments about my bump size- some say big, others small! One woman at work said 'ooh, are you sure you don't have six in there?! I did think I was quite small for twins, which I was worried about as I've been so ill with sickness, but this comment still annoyed me. Although I do seem to have got bigger this week so maybe that's why she said it. Also, the sheer amount of women (including midwives/doctors) who have said "ooh i was so worried i'd have twins as my husband/mum/pet gerbil is a twin but luckily i was ok... i was really lucky not to have them." Thanks for that, we're actually pretty chuffed we're having twins!

sorry for the moan Blush

thingamajig · 18/01/2011 22:50

Ooh the comments people make are crazy. I worked at Mamas and Papas for a couple of years and very quickly learnt that it is utterly impossible to tell how far along someone is by looks alone (and actively cringed when I asked a lady when she was due and she replied that she had had him 3 weeks ago).
Its amazing how many people have thought it acceptable to ask if I have had fertility treatment, which I find pretty offensive - none of their business - and the ignorance about twins is pretty astounding - how could different sex possibly be considered identical?

I have had an interesting time squashing 3 carseats across the back of my car - they will just go in. Haven't bought a pushchair yet but planning to get the out'n'about nipper. Hosp bag sort of packed - I'm 31 weeks now.

I have to say I have a nasty little giggle when I read things like "I'm x weeks and have no stretch marks; I have been applying cocoa butter/bio oil/the juice of the madagasgan tiger lily, and it works"
With dd now 3 I did all of these, and I swear the day before labour I had no stretch marks at all. Looking in the mirror afterwards, I found a huge number of purple stripes on my very saggy belly. This time round, I don't think they have worsened (yet), but I am holding no expectations.

Magic, those are great weights but I can sympathise with how tired you are. Mine were about 3lb 8 each last scan, I wonder what they will be next week.

I am holding out for as natural a birth as possible, having had a home waterbirth with no painkillers with dd I know it is possible. My midwife is supportive, but the consultant very obviously thinks that I am mad (along with my mum and dh). We'll see.

BrassicaBabe · 19/01/2011 09:57

Morning all

Thanks for the buggy tips.

Do they do pelvic girdles in sexy black and red Magic8? Grin Just a thought....

lol @ "juice of the madagasgan tiger lily" thingamajig Burst my bubble why don't you Grin

In the interest of sharing our twins are as a result of clomid. Mostly people ask if twins are in the family. I tell them it's just because I'm older (37) Grin

Swazzee · 19/01/2011 16:44

Hi all

It's been ages since I posted - been soooo busy with the twins. The last couple of weeks have been really difficult as Adem wouldn't sleep at night at all but during the day we couldn't keep him awake. I found myself up ALL NIGHT consoling him and rocking him etc etc - for over a week I was averaging an hour's sleep a night - and that wasn't all in one go either! On the upside, Rafi has been sleeping through from 11pm ish til 6am ish and wasn't woken up by Adem's (very loud) crying, so at least I've only had to worry about one at night!

They're 8 weeks now and had their first jabs this morning. They were fine straight after but have been crying all afternoon. Think it'll be a rubbish night's sleep again - and just as I'd got Adem sorted a couple of days ago!

But all that aside, I'm absolutely loving twin-motherhood. They both started smiling a couple of weeks ago and my heart melts every time they smile at me Smile. And the attention they get every time we take them out is quite funny - in Asda the other day I had a crowd of more than 10 people around my trolley in the baby aisle, and we were in there over 2 hours (the shop, not just the baby aisle Wink). But people do ask a lot of questions - get used to talking to strangers ladies! The boys are very laid back about it all though - they always sleep when we're out and about.

Ooops, gotta go - Adem's done a poo Wink

MissyMolly · 19/01/2011 19:54

Grin I've had the 'are they identical?' when I've just said they're a boy and a girl Confused also 'god aren't you brave!' No one has directly asked me if I've had fertility treatment but people have asked my mum if I have! I do get asked all the time we have twins in my family, which we do.

Swazzee · 19/01/2011 20:49

I can't tell you how many times people have asked me if twins run in the family, and lots of people say 'aren't you lucky!'.

But the oddest comment I had was a woman who said 'aren't you clever' Confused Not sure intelligence comes into it!

I get asked quite a lot if they're IVF - I think it's a tad offensive. Not offensive actually, but personal - you know what I mean. If I had had IVF I'm sure I wouldn't want to discuss it with a stranger. I just tell them that they were an accident (but a welcome one Smile) Well they did ask!

MrsStevo · 19/01/2011 22:55

Hello all! Haven't been on here since we got the big news last Tuesday and have been catching up on all your news ... feel like I'm getting to know you. Although you're all WAAAAAAY ahead of me and have scared me witless with all your stories!!! I'm still only 8.4 weeks so v.early days. Next scan is 31/01 and I've just got everything crossed that everything's ok. It is all such a big worry before 12 weeks .... and then all sorts of other worries start after that!

MrsStevo Nothing so cosmopolitan for me Grin I'm between Boston and Skegness.

Snowfalls108 · 20/01/2011 12:52

We were thinking of a little card printed out with all the answers to the questions as I've now answered them so often:

"Yes I will be very busy"
"Yes it was a big surprise"
"No twins don't run in the family - identical twins are not herditary"
"No they are not IVF"
"No we don't know the sex"
"Identical twins will be the same sex"
"Yes DS's life is going to change"
"Yes we are moving house"
"We are currently looking into buggies"
"We're not sure if we'll have another one afterwards"

Cerubina · 20/01/2011 13:02

Ours are the result of IVF and though I don?t think there?s any shame in that, I?m not going to be volunteering the information as it?s personal. I think a lot of people ask if twins run in the family as a sort of shorthand for ?are they IVF?? so when I?ve been asked I just say ?no, not at all!? and leave them to draw their own conclusions (if they must). I would certainly be Confused if anyone openly asked me and would probably tell them it?s none of their business ? unless they want to be asked exactly where and how they conceived their children, in what position etc!

My colleague the other day overstepped the line I thought by telling me I should watch out for accidents after the twins arrive, i.e. telling me to get my contraception sorted out! He said ?IVF sometimes does get things going again? and I thought it was very cheeky ? I?ve never told him it?s IVF and even if he suspects he should take on board that I haven?t said anything. And as for discussing my contraceptive plans...!

BrassicaBabe · 20/01/2011 13:07

In response to the enquires Cerubina has had, maybe snowfalls needs to add:
"bent over the bath"
to her list! GrinGrin

holidays2010 · 20/01/2011 13:20

Hey all, haven't posted in a while, PC trouble, and my new mobile no longer allows me to view mumsnet :(

Anyway, I'm doing well Magic - you?
I have another scan in 2 weeks, only two scans left, I'm guessing they'll book me in again before due date though because the last scan is so far away from it?

Anyway, great to hear things are well Swazzee.

And I think I'll print that out snowfalls! :)

Oh and as for having more, looks like this pregnancy will be my last, thinking of going for a permanent 'snip'.
Its a shame I haven't been able to enjoy this pregnancy as much as I could have if my partner was as supportive as he should be but cant see me coping with anymore kids after these two + DD! Grin
