Hope you are managing ok fenouille, my very good friend's baby was born with a full tongue tie and she couldn't feed at all, they cut the tie when she was 3 days old and it took a lot of hard work to get her feeding. My friend used the nipple shields at first, I think her baby was about 12 weeks old before she could latch on without the shields and have a proper feed. It took awhile of expressing and spoon/cup feeding at first too before she could get her to latch on at all, even with the shields. Will they not cut the tie because it isn't a full one? Hope you manage ok despite it!

tiany · 11/11/2010 10:40

Wow - havent been on for a while CONGRATS to all the new mums, the babies sure are popping out now. I am due this saturday but have feeling my little one is in no hurry.... hope you are all doing well :)

lainey1981 · 11/11/2010 10:42

congrats to Rinny ny DN is called Isaac, lovely name Smile

llandb i know what you mean about being torn between wanting not to be pg anymore and then terrified as realise that would be mean having a whole other person entirely dependent on me eeek. I had a big fat teary freak out to this effect on tues night - DP was lovely bless him, but I spend every evening in agony with SPD and then don't sleep, so just pray for it to be over, but then realise i really should be making the most of these last days when it's just us.

went to NHS breastfeeding workshop yesterday, am came away feeling v positive. they are sooo pro breastfeeding (possibly to the point of being militant about doing it for at least 6 months) but gave lots of info, tips and masses of info about support post birth. they have a v baby friendly post birth policy re skin to skin for up to an hour before baby weighed etc - so feel like i have every chance to succeed at this.
I was worried before as have only been given negative info from my (D) sisters!
38+4 here, some poor girl in my class was 8 days overdue.
am hibenating from the weather in bed on my laptop, I plan to ignore my phone and enjoy doing nothing to day.

how is everyone else?
Boris - hope all is ok with your naughty bubba

*hibernating!

comtessa · 11/11/2010 11:42

Enjoy hibernating lainey1981. I am semi-hibernating, with a little help from PIL-who-have-car.

PIL arrived safely yesterday and brought LOTS of baby things. Just spoken to MIL and they're coming over for lunch soon followed by helping me put a set of huge shelves together and painting the living room. And sorting baby things. And any other things I have on my list for them. Love my lovely in-laws Grin

llandb and lainey am with you on the PG or newborn dilemma. I think I was up about every hour last night for bathroom visits - there's clearly just not enough room in my body for baby AND bladder right now. And the bladder's not coming out so it's down to you LO. But not for another week as need to get our bedroom sorted so your moses basket can actually fit in... Argh.

Hope all new mums are enjoying snuggles and cuddles with their new LOs.

blondecat · 11/11/2010 13:37

comtessa will follow honey and lemon tip. Glycerin sold out at boots but dh will be sent out into the storm today to get some.

Just had a giant bowl of chicken soup so should be on mend soon

And cried at landlord yesterday so he sent a builder who fixed the blockage by breaking the pipe! Apparently he fixed it properly today as well as moving the loo which was fitted the wrong way, but had no chance to check.

Confined to bed and terrified of body shaking cough post c section

Fenouille won't they cut it at all?

umf · 11/11/2010 14:07

Advice needed: are my waters leaking?

Afraid TMI, but this was discussed a few days ago and I'm hoping those who had it might have some more advice.

Woke up in night, stood up, small rush of watery discharge. Has continued since. Not loads: pants and trousers damp. No smell; I have an idea amniotic fluid does have a particular smell?

No noticeable cx. Have put on pad.

So is this just the increased discharge people were talking about? If so, have the ladies who got it popped yet? How long did you have between noticing the discharge and going into labour?

How on earth do you tell??

Definitely not wee, btw. Pelvic floor in remarkably good nick despite traumatic ventouse delivery of DS's enormous head. And it's... not coming from there.

Don't want to fuss mw with it, unless sure is waters. And even if it is the waters, probably would wait at least a day cos don't want to be put on the 24 hr timer for labour starting.

Thank you!!

Fen I hope you're getting support with the bf and tongue tie. Looks like there's lots of good advice on the boards here (tho as ?Zoe Williams? said, they fight like ferrets...) but there's nothing like real life help.

Fenouille · 11/11/2010 14:23

Thanks sarah. As you say, they don't seem to want to cut it because it's not that bad, although it will give him a speech impediment later so it will have to be done when he's bigger. The thing that pissed me off the most is that the consultant said, "I know you want to bf for your own pleasure but you have to put your son first"! Oh that's why we bf then, not because of the health benefits... :/

Anyway, rant over. He had few good sucks on the plastic nipples this morning, but I don't know how much he got.

Any news from Boris?

Ebb · 11/11/2010 14:26

Congratylations for all the new babies. Smile

Umf my waters went in small 'gushes' on the Saturday evening and my contractions started at about 2am Sunday morning, DS born at 10.20am. This time round they went with great gusto and a loud pop just before dd was born.

I think it depends on your local health authorities guide lines. I rang my MW when I thought my waters started leaking and I was told to go in for a trace to make sure baby wasn't distressed. They took a high vaginal swab to check for infections as baby isn't as protected once your waters go. I was offered an induction the following morning if I wanted it otherwise I was told I had 72 hours to go into labour naturally. I had to check my temperature regularly to check again for infections. Like I said, I went into labour naturally anyway. If you don't ring your MW yet maybe keep an eye on your temperature to be on the safe side? Hopefully it won't be long before you have your baby. Smile

Abbie is doing well. She's nearly back at her birth weight and seems a mellow little soul.

umf · 11/11/2010 14:33

Thanks Ebb! Yes, will monitor temp. One reason for not contacting mw is that DS had high temp yesterday and I had slight one, which is def just a virus, but I don't want them thinking that I have bacterial infection on that basis, IFYSWIM. Looks (from google "research"...) like infection risk actually pretty low from minor trickle, as opposed to from big rush or ARM. But will act immediately if temp going up/feeling poorly.

Glad to hear all well with the Abbie poppet!

Fen That consultant needs a slap! We had one in NICU who also thought that mothers bf for own gratification. And surely cutting tongue tie is a much more minor job if done early?

Fenouille · 11/11/2010 14:37

Ooh DrUmf it does rather sound like it might be (although I know nothing as mine went at the hospital just as the midwife told me to take my pants off so she could break mine - great timing). Anyway, keeping my fingers crossed for you.

And thanks everyone for the concern and advice - it's bank holiday here so we're on our own today, but I'm in touch with the local la leche league and I have to call my midwife tomorrow for the address of the local bf specialist.

My tuppence on the pg vs baby debate: as a first timer, pg was so much easier than now, but everyday I thank my lucky stars for this beautiful boy

Oh, and so as not to totally depress you all with my tales of woe (it's great therapy for me but do tell me to go away if it's too much), I've just opened the Mulberry Bush catalogue my Mum brought down last week - is it wrong that I totally want to buy everything in it? Seriously, don't look at their website unless you've got a heart of steel.

Mibby · 11/11/2010 14:45

Im with you on the pregnant/ baby thing. Sick of all the pregnancy stuff but still feel panicy about an actual real live baby.

Went to midwife this morning (40 + 3) and have been booked for a sweep next monday if nothings happened by then. She did say to go for a walk to try and get thigs going, then looked out of the window at the lashing rain and said maybe not :)

Gemjar · 11/11/2010 15:52

Looks like i'm going to have to wait another week for DS2 to arrive.

40+4 today, went to the midwife this morning, and she was prepared to do a sweep to see if we could get things going and the little bugger darling hasn't engaged yet, so she couldn't do one!

I am booked in to be induced a week tomorrow, so it looks like he won't be making an appearance until next weekend.

I should have known really, his big brother was exactly the same.

sarahbuff · 11/11/2010 15:57

Shock at your consultant Fen!! What a jerk! Yes, we take all the trouble to get breastfeeding established for our OWN gratification for sure! Honestly. If the tie is enough to cause a speech impediment later on, I'd absolutely insist on having it done now, especially because it is really likely to help with breastfeeding at the same time. I just can't get over that consultant's attitude though! Angry

With regards to the pregnant/baby thing, certainly this time I am WAAAY ready to not be pregnant. Each time I've had a baby I've panicked before because I was tired and felt wretched and wondered how I'd ever look after a tiny baby feeling like that, but forgot that pretty much the moment I wasn't pregnant anymore I felt way better! I'm really looking forward to not being pregnant anymore now, as I've been nauseous the WHOLE pregnancy and it's really getting old. Sigh Add to that not sleeping well because of strong braxton hicks and cramps, dizziness from low blood pressure, bad back and no appetite, and I'd say yes please can baby come out now!! :) Plus I can't wait to see his or her tiny gorgeous face and find out whether it's a boy or a girl!

PrivetDancer · 11/11/2010 16:09

I'm still fairly at peace with being pregant really (and good job too as over a week to even my due date), but then I have had it fairly easy and am still sleeping fine and it's my last day at work today (yeah!!) so I quite fancy at least a few days off with nothing to do! Mid next week would be ok..

Then again I am of course dying to see the baby and not having to worry about everything being ok and find out if it's a boy or a girl too :o

cluelessnchaos · 11/11/2010 16:42

due date today, mine isnt engaged either gemjar, so no sweep. They are going to try again on tuesday, hopefully wont be necessary.

hmmSleep · 11/11/2010 19:26

Congratulations on more new babies!

All feeling a bit hectic here so really just bookmarking so I can read back when I have time (ha!). Finding dealing with new baby, preschool run, school run and all the other activities having 3 children involves a bit much. I'm very run down, sinusitis, coldsores and mouth ulcers, lovely! Keep telling myself it will all settle down soon. I'm in awe of those of you with 4!

Wallace · 11/11/2010 19:38

It feels like everyone else is having babies!

12 days to go here til due date. MIL has asked could I have it in the next couple of days as she has a few days off work. I will try to oblige but can't have it until I get my results of blood tests to check my iron levels are back up now I'm on iron tablets.

Also can't have it on Sat night/sunday as ds1 has his last race of the season (races minimotos) and it is very important because he has the chance of being second in the championship.

Good luck everyone :)

Gaga82 · 11/11/2010 21:16

Fenouille My LO has a tongue tie as well, luckily hasn't stopped her with the feeding but everybody I have mentioned to says that they will 'See how it goes' if it causes a speech problem later. To me this is nonsense! I would much rather them cut it now when she will have no idea!

Anyway, 3 weeks tomorrow since birth and c-section scar starting to feel far more bearable - can pick her up and everything now! Have also stopped random daily tears over insignificant nonsense (odd socks for example)- bonus.

Well done to all those who have been birthing recently. Good luck to those with it still to come. Hope everyone is feeling well and snatching some sleep when they can - both pre and post bump!

Fenouille · 11/11/2010 22:04

Hi gaga, frustrating isn't it? DH is busy sticking his tongue out at Norry as the LLL lady said babies are good impersonators and if he's got any freedom in his tongue that's a good way to get it moving. I think he's just taunting him :) He is trying though, bless him.

Glad I'm not the only one getting teary at crazy stuff - this morning I read the beginning of Paddington Bear and cried when he agreed to go home with Mr & Mrs Brown. Yesterday it was because there were no Ginger Nuts left, so I suppose it's getting better.

hmm I am in awe of those of you with more than one. It's bad enough with two sulking cats. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Sarah that's France for you...

bunnygirl80 · 12/11/2010 03:14

Haven't had time to read the rest of the thread, so congrats to any new babies, comiserations to those of you still waiting.

DS arrived at 9:02pm on 11/11/10, weighing 7lb 1 oz after an 8 hour labour, with no pain relief Shock Was v surprised it went as well as it did - didn't hurt much until transition, which took all of 5 minutes and then he was out in 4 pushes. Had a small internal tear, which needed a couple of stitches, but none on the outside so I can pee in perfect comfort Grin BF is a complete disaster, though, but I suppose something has to be difficult after such an easy labour Smile

Wallace · 12/11/2010 06:50

Wow well done! :)

JFly · 12/11/2010 07:44

Well done, bunny! That sounds short but ouch. :) Congratulations!

Don't despair about feeding just yet. The first few days (weeks, for that matter) are such a huge learning curve for everyone involved. Especially until your milk comes in. It may be a very natural thing, but it doesn't always come naturally to baby or mum. It can really help at first to keep baby close, stay in bed and feed, feed, feed. That's your "job", so when you're not sleeping or eating, babymoon and enjoy the little one! Good luck with it all.

Mibby · 12/11/2010 08:45

Congratulations bunnygirl :)

comtessa · 12/11/2010 08:50

Wow, another quick labour! Many congratulations bunny. Hope BF'ing comes together soon.
