Just a new thread as I noticed we are near the limit (again)!

Morning,

Just after a wee bit of advice really. Been up through the night feeling sick and stressing about work (lots of assessments due etc) and so I phoned in sick this morning. Must be feeling terrible cos I started crying and havent been able to stop since Blush

Question is....do you think it's worth visiting the doc and trying to get signed off for a week or so, to get myself back on track. Or, should I just 'man-up' and get myself back to work asap?

Thanks for any advice, hope everyone has a lovely day x

smallblackflowers · 10/11/2010 09:12

Hi suzym, hope you are feeling a bit better now Smile. My advice is to go with what you think is best for you and your baby, but then I did get signed off for 10 days yesterday.
I was a complete martyr in my last pregnancy and got no thanks for it, and realised as soon as I was off on maternity leave how much better I felt. I'm sure your work will survive without you for a week or so, and if it helps you to get back on your feet you'll be far more productive when you are back in. x

WanderingSheep · 10/11/2010 09:28

Suzym, I'd be down the GP surgery getting signed off! If you're feeling terrible it's your bodys way of saying that it needs a rest. Plodding on at work feeling terrible isn't going to help anyone and you'll regret it. Just take the time to recuperate and I imagine you'll feel better for it! Hope you feel better soon! Smile

Deliaskis · 10/11/2010 09:33

Yay! MW apt yesterday and still no sugar in wee sample. Sorry, I know not everybody wants to rejoice with me over this but I'm pleased as have been a bit paranoid about GD since I found out I have to have GTT due to high BMI.

So, so far, so good. I know this doesn't mean I won't have it as it often crops up later, but pleased nonetheless.

Baby was very active so it was hard to hear the heartbeat over the pounding s/he was giving the doppler with hands/feet etc. But that in itself is reassuring I guess. Did get to hear it for a bit though and all OK.

Having a 'nice' morning today. Had great sleep, nice waking up (as in woke up just before alarm so not a rude awakening), and just feeling rather chipper today. Thought I'd come and share that as I have no qualms about sharing my moans and groans as well!

Hope all is well ladies, look after yourselves and stay healthy.

suzym1984 · 10/11/2010 09:45

well doctor refused to sign me off! I was in floods of tears in the surgery and she basically said that I could self certify for a week if i cant cope, but she wouldnt want me off work for very long! very down now as will have to go back tomorrow, cant stop crying

Deliaskis · 10/11/2010 10:16

Oh suzy sorry to hear that. Maybe it would be a good idea to take at least a few days self-certified anyway, even if you just take tomorrow and Friday and the weekend, the break might be just what you need to feel a bit more refreshed on Monday.

Hope you feel better soon.

Dx

geekygiraffe · 10/11/2010 11:00

suzy, that is rubbish - feel so sorry for you. I'd self-certify for a week, and then go back and try again.

Interesting to read about the cats - I've got two babies kitties, and worry about how they will react. Trying to ignore them a bit now to get them used to it and feel v cruel.

Bit stressed about tomorrow as I have a court hearing to get a CCJ set aside (for a few hundred quid I paid back two years ago to an ex-employer). Luckily I have proof that I paid it back, and that all previous docs went to the wrong address despite them having the right one. Still something I could do without though!! Am going to try and look as pregnant as possible ; 0 C'mon baby, overnight growth spurt please!

angels1 · 10/11/2010 11:59

suzy that is really frustrating/upsetting. Is there another GP at the surgery you can see? I agree - have the rest of the week off and self cert for that. Then, if you feel up to trying work next week and if you're still not coping go back to GP and explain everything again (to someone else if possible). I'm still signed off and just had a funny turn when getting a couple of bits in tesco - made me realise I'm really not up to work, and plodding on making yourself go to work will only make you worse. Is there any option of starting mat leave early if really needed?

Oh - and for any of those worrying about taking a GTT test who haven't already (maybe delia included here) I've got an appointment next month with a diabetic nurse where they give me some kind of pin prick thing and I take my own little sample at certain times of day so they can monitor blood sugar levels - so no horrible fasting and drinking syrup - horrah.Just hope it all comes back OK.

delia horrah for a good day for you :) I'm very Envy as I've had constant bad days for over a week now and just feel like I can't manage anything. It's so nice when you have a day where you don't feel as bad.

geeky pick the clothes that make your tummy look as big as poss tomorrow - I've got a top that I always feel makes my tummy look humungous Wink

OP posts:
Deliaskis · 10/11/2010 12:13

LOL at picking clothes that make bump look big, I have one pair of mat trousers that make it look huge. Whenever I wear them, everybody suddenly says 'oooh you're coming along aren't you' and similar. Was joking with colleague yesterday that the trousers are like a wonderbra for my bump!

Suzy what work do you do? Do you think they will on the whole be unsympathetic to you being off ill?

angels sorry you've been having a string of bad days. Hope you're managing to take good care of yourself (and that DH is looking after you), and at least now you don't have to fret about whether/when to go back to work (I mean I know it's not easy or anything, I just mean, you know, one less thing!).

angels1 · 10/11/2010 12:23

Thanks delia, and I forgot to say to ledkr thanks for the annoying collegue update - good to hear she's driving everyone mad Wink

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 10/11/2010 12:27

angels, that's all they'd do if you failed the GTT anyway, so they are basically just assuming that you do have GD and taking it from there (same as they are for me, although in my case because I had GD last time rather than because I don't want to do the GTT).

My FB status at the moment is "PLIMLS wonders what PR genius came up with the idea of branding something that shoots a needle into your finger as the 'Comfort'. This is obviously some new and interesting definition of the word 'comfort' of which I was previously unaware."

angels1 · 10/11/2010 12:40

lo at profs status, and oh at the pin prick test I have to do - I thought I was super special and lucky Hmm

OP posts:
smallblackflowers · 10/11/2010 12:41

suzym what a bummer Sad. Agree that you should self certify for the next week and take it from there...

I've got my GTT on Monday, and am pretty certain that I'll fail as have been having spells of faintness, which was what happened in my last pg at about this time, and could well be related to fluctuating blood sugar levels. On the plus side my urine test yesterday was clear. I've dug out my old finger pricker and test strips and have been testing on and off over the last few days. Yesterday's fasting level was higher than it should have been, but all post meal readings have been fine (and I'm not yet following a strict low carb diet), so you never know....
prof - 'comfort' is not a word I'd use to describe any kind of blood-letting, although I'm sure there is an epilator with the same name...again not an activity that can be described as comfortable in any way, shape or form...

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 10/11/2010 12:47

My fasting reading was too high this morning, but I've been tipped off on another forum to have a spoonful or two of peanut butter and a glass of milk before bed and that that should stop (um, forget what it's called, but basically a reactive thing where your body reacts to low blood sugar levels by releasing loads of it overnight). So will try that tonight (assuming I remember to buy peanut butter).

smallblackflowers · 10/11/2010 12:59

Thanks for the tip - I always have peanut butter in, so will enjoy having a guilt free extra serving - yum.

wigglesrock · 10/11/2010 13:03

Prof Peanut butter is fab at regulating low blood sugar levels. MIL and friend swear by it, unfortunately I have been trying to follow that logic through into the benefits of eating as many Reeses pieces as I can but I don't think I'm fooling anybody Grin.

Have had a bit of a backwards spiral into the vomiting (tmi sorry), not really kept any proper meals down since Sunday evening but don't feel that bad, carpal tunnel appears to be staying away, so overjoyed at that, had terrible time with dd1. I finish work on Christmas Eve so am counting down the days.

Suzy Shitty GP, can you make an appt for a midwife, tell her how ill you are and ask her to talk to that or another doctor. Good luck

TallulahBelly14 · 10/11/2010 13:40

Oops, a day late for TPT again. Did it just now and I'm 8.5, so I think that's a whole sheet since last week.

I'm officially off on mat leave from Christmas, but I had loads of holiday saved up this year, so will actually be off from Dec 13th. Can't wait to get the nursery and house all sorted out - I'm just trying to be realistic about how much I'll get done when I'm the size of a house. How much bigger will our bumps get from now on?

TallulahBelly14 · 10/11/2010 13:41

Speaking of pets, we're seriously thinking of getting a puppy - and even going to a dog fair on Saturday! Is it madness to even consider having a puppy and a new baby at around the same time? Has anyone else tried it?

byronicheroine · 10/11/2010 13:53

I'm off from dec 13th too - I feel a bit lazy (well, I don't, but I worry that other people will think that I am!), but it works out just right as we can get home for Christmas and a bit of shopping in London (seriously can't wait) and still able to fly back before the limit.. all good timing really!
I just ate far too much chocolate Blush and the baby has gone a bit crazy with the kicking - oops!
I'm late for TPT too - just measure in the loos at work and I'm 7 1/2 but feel big (probably all the chocolate!)

wigglesrock · 10/11/2010 14:01

byronicheroine I ate (almost a whole box) a few Quality Street last night, just to keep my strength up you see and baby was riverdancing away for about 1 hr. Am afraid to do any more TPTing as I feel huge but have put no weight on, Envy at you finishing work in basically one month!!!

Tullulahbelly think you may be a bit mad getting baby and puppy in one go, why not have baby first, then if you decide you want puppy, it will already be accepting of the baby when it comes into your house, and won't feel put out. There speaks the voice of reason who is currently trying to shoo her own dog off the "big" sofa so I can spread out Blush

angels1 · 10/11/2010 14:08

speaking of chocolate - I brought DH a terrys choc orange with popping candy in today - I wonder what kind of back flips that would make the baby do if I consumed it all Wink

OP posts:
smallblackflowers · 10/11/2010 14:20

mmmmmm I want chocolate now. Off to investigate the kitchen to see if I can find any!

Deliaskis · 10/11/2010 15:14

Tallulah I was wondering too, how much bigger I'm going to get. I have a nice round neat bump at the moment and TBH [vain] I think I look rather nice [also smug]. But I am also assuming that around Christmas I will be waddling, the size of a whale, unable to move without first alerting the coastguard (well we don't live near the sea but YKWIM), and just basically laughably huge.

I would delighted to hear from anyone who thinks this might not be the case!

I did yesterday have to get off the sofa, with the pregnant woman's kind of hips first maneouvre, which made DH giggle uncontrollably.

ledkr · 10/11/2010 15:40

suzy maybe you should sign up with my annoying colleagues gp who sigs her off at the drop of a hat. Seriously that is awfull tho.How can she make a judgement. My very corrupt advice to you would be to go back next week and say you have spd or backache or bad vomiting-anybody second my dishonest motion.I have been a martyr in all my pregs and am now in situation where unloading the dishwasher makes me ned a lie down so i couldnt even get to work never mind do any.
Tpt-10 but i am nr the top of the list,i now weigh more than dh.
Baby is more lively now,i was wondering if it was the glass of wine i had friday that slowed her down.
Two prs of size 14 mat jeans now dont fit me,the bit where they become jeans from the soft panel is too tight.I am now down to one pr and some leggings which dont look too hot on my hulk hogan legs so i am hoping to find a dress or two in town. I am also struggling with boots/shoes my legs are so fat that i cant get them on very easily esp with spd and amassive tummy to contend with.Putting uggs on this morning reduced me to tears of frustration!

suzym1984 · 10/11/2010 16:42

Thanks for the advice and kind words ladies! Ive rang my MW and left a message so just waiting for her to ring back. Also rang wrk to say I wouldnt be in tomorrow. That is exactly why I wanted a sicknote tho as I hate having to ring the head every day, getting the guilt trip laid on thick!
Ledkr I might end up taking that advice, altho she would prob just send me away in tears again Sad

On a brighter note...some of my ebay purchases arrived today. Some very cute baby clothes which look brand new! And, I got my letter to say that I will be getting my HIP grant paid in the next few days. Hooray!
