Have decided not to give the new baby a dummy at all!!

flamebat · 20/10/2005 10:31

You're more optimistic than me.... I've decided to try not to, but still get a couple of newborn ones in "just in case"

DD was a very unsettled baby - she didn't like sleeping during the day, so got overtired, and then wouldn't settle at night - she wanted to be held, and to suck my finger all the time. In the end my friend and I spent a few hours just holding a dummy in her mouth until she started to suck it voluntarily... my life was sooo much better then

flamebat · 20/10/2005 10:52

I'm aching... I don't know if it is just from the tension of last night and a lack of sleep, or seomthig to worry about

flamebat · 20/10/2005 10:53

Spark is still wriggling

3k · 20/10/2005 11:01

Is it your bump that is aching Flame? Take a few paracetamols and put your feet up and see if that helps.

gmh · 20/10/2005 11:24

morning,

Hope you are resting and feel better soon, Flame - easier said than done, I know.

I wish I'd stuck with dummies with DD2. She was a miserable baby (hence the 5 year gap) and wouldn't take one even when I sat and held it in. Then at 8 months , when I stopped BF she started to suck her thumb. Weaning her off hasn't worked, and I can't lose it! Am going to try anti nail biting stuff next, but I'm not that optomistic.

Frizbe · 20/10/2005 11:40

aww flame and poppyh, you've just reminded me of dd and two of her older 'friends' aged 5 and 7 all sat in a row a few weekends ago, sucking their thumbs! pity no one had a camera!

Ixel, happy day out! yahooo!

3k, aww hun, hope pains and shakes go away soon for you {{{Hugs}}} not nice feeling pap...

Thell, have checked and my scan notes were written into my pregnancy book by midwife at the hospital, hth's

thell · 20/10/2005 11:53

Grrrr.
With all the to-ing and fro-ing at the scan we don't even know how long she is!
I might phone tomorrow to see if I can get a print out.

I've tried not to think about dummies too much, but will prob get a few just in case.
One book I've read suggests weaning babies off dummies when they are 3 - 4 months old, at the end of the 'fourth trimester,' but I'm sure it depends on the babby's temperament!

We want to use cloth nappies too, but are realistic - probably not for the first 3n months at least!

TicTac · 20/10/2005 11:56

Morning,

I didn't get scan notes until my consultant appointment and she asked me where thwy where...Like I knew?!?!

Dummy - I have said I am not going to give dd a dummy (i didn't have one as a baby either) and will do my best to stick to it but I know that is easier said then done when she isn't here.

I am constipated, have a pain over my bump from time to time and feel really tired. Oh and I feel like the size of a whale...

flamebat · 20/10/2005 11:58

Midwife is calling me back in a minute. I'm aching more and worrying, so it seemed the best plan

thell · 20/10/2005 11:59

I think my bump grows in spurts - some evenings mys kin feels like it's going to tear, everything aches and I feel like a complete heifer. Then usually the next day it's fine and I feel like the bump has disappeared again! I still stare at my profile in the mirror and can't believe it's there.

Chloe55 · 20/10/2005 12:10

Yeah I'm a bit like you Thell - it really does feel like your skin just can't pull anymore - so far the stretchmarks are keeping at bay but I'm sure they won't be able to for long, it's just not scientifically possible!

I hope everything is ok Flame, I'm sure it is but like you say best to get it checked out - that way your mind can be put at rest too.

TicTac · 20/10/2005 12:17

Let us know how you get on flame. I am sure all is fine but safe to check it out!!

Bewitched · 20/10/2005 12:57

Hope all is well flame and that the midwife is able to re-assure.

Haven't decided what to do about dummies myself. I didn't have one as a child and consequently sucked my thumb until I was about 14 , so you'd think I'd be keen to use them on my children, but actually not overly struck on the idea. I guess I'll have to see when the time comes!

3K - I'm with you - just 15 weeks today .

flamebat · 20/10/2005 13:09

Midwife called back - she has arranged for my own one to come and see me between 2 & 3 today, more for my reassurance than because they think anything is wrong.

Chloe55 · 20/10/2005 13:37

Just to let those of you who are interested know I have found a nice gift for Amanda and have posted the details on the Gift for Amanda thread. I have left my email address on there too for those of you wanting to contribute/say something in card.

teuch · 20/10/2005 14:00

hi chloe...where's the thread? I can't seem to track it down..

Chloe55 · 20/10/2005 14:04

Under other subjects - sorry, I don't know how to link it.

3k · 20/10/2005 14:29

Mmmm just had an interesting conversation with my male boss about childbirth! I was mentioning how uncomfortable my chair is and that I might bring a ball in to sit on - HUGE debate - he reckons you cant help labour, prepare for it or anything like that which may be right in some cases but I like the birth ball idea where you bounce your baby out (ok, into position). He reckons the whole ball idea is ridiculous, his wife never pooed, made a noise and was "very strong" in labour. I'm waiting for the "you wont cope in labour" talk. Just copied and e-mailed him a whole page on the benefits of birth balls which he thinks is hilarious! I will show him!

flamebat · 20/10/2005 14:35

Midwife has been She says all feels ok, she's taken a sample to check for wee infection, and says to rest for the rest of the day, and have a warm bath if I start hurting again. Got a normal appointment tomorrow, so she'll see how things are then.

I love your boss's "strong" wife ... I didn't poo either (but I'd had piles of milk of magnesia to start me off, and had no poo left by the time I got to pushing ). To me it makes sense that a ball can help - gravity to send it the right way, and wriggling yourself so it bends down your system better.

3k · 20/10/2005 14:44

Glad all is ok Flame, just take it easy today and relax. I think pregnancy is bloody worrying, I worry more than enjoy which is a shame really. Just a natural worrier I suppose.

I definately like the ball idea, I have ordered a gym ball from Avon (I do Avon part time too) it was only £4.99 so thought I could make good use of it. What's everyones opinion on TENS machines? I know we are still a way off but not sure how they could work??????? Just trying to get ideas.

TicTac · 20/10/2005 15:31

3K - my mw highly recommends the TENS as I had said I really wanted to stay home as long as possible she says the tens is enough to take your mind off an reduce the contractions pain. She was v.supportive of staying home as long as possible...she said the doctors will tend to intervene earlier if you go into hospital!

As for birth balls....do whatever you are comfy with and sod your boss....tell him when has has given birth you will follow his every word but until then...shut his face!!!

flamebat · 20/10/2005 15:32

I looked at the avon ones too - I decided against it until much closer to the time (as much as I'm sure DD would have loved a giant ball)

teuch · 20/10/2005 15:41

right Chloe...had a go at that paypal thingy so good luck that it will all go smoothly and thank you for arranging it.

Flame - glad everything is ok and hope your discomfort eases soon.

Tesco also do £4.99 ball with pump - my yoga instructor recommends it for sitting on from around 30wks (whilst watching telly or whatever) as it provides the right pelvic alignment for encouraging babs into thr right position (as opposed to my current breech-baiting sofa position!!)

Bewitched · 20/10/2005 16:02

Be warned - my NCT instructor warned against buying some of the cheaper ones last week, as she said they are often not the correct size, or are not strong enough!

I have one from the active birthing centre, and I believe that the correct size is an inflated diameter of c65cm (obviously will adjust a little if you are exceptionally tall/short), so perhaps you can check what size the Tesco ones inflate to before you purchase.
