M22S - Are they gonna ask to see your notes? "Yeah, the baby's been showing up small for dates..."

3k · 29/09/2005 14:56

Amanda is the Phil & Ted one the buggy that is a 3 wheeler and has the baby lying kind of underneath? My friend has just bought one of these and I didnt think muich of it although I suppose if you have to buy a double buggy it is more lightweight than others. The eldest who was two in June can undo the straps and climbed out of it and ran across the road. The stitching came apart where the straps join and it tips if you dont go up or down the kerb head on. They did send her a new cover though so were good for that reason.

I am looking at the Trenton Delux in Mothercare, it is £260 and is a travel system although it has a carrycot thingy so the baby can face you. Dont know what I would buy if I had two to think about though.

It might be slightly different than the one you are talking about then as my friends is for 2 children. The baby kind of lies underneath the main chair and when the baby gets older there are two seats behind one another. It does look nice but cost over £400 and they have already had problems with it. I was terrified when her little boy run across the road as we were chatting and assuming he was safely strapped in. I almost tipped it up going down the kerb too as it topples to the side. Very scary!!!

3k · 29/09/2005 15:10

No it is the same one, just checked it out on their website

www.philandteds.com/

3k · 29/09/2005 15:13

Off home now ladies, going to get some fruit and veg from the farm shop on way home then home for a sleep!!!!

Got my funny scan tomorrow to predict if I will have an early baby or not. Will let you all know how it goes as soon as I get the chance. It is research apparantly for Kings College Hospital!

Byyyyeeeeeeeeee xxxxxxxxxxxx

flamebat · 29/09/2005 15:17

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm fruit

teuch · 29/09/2005 16:04

hi all - yay for SC's girl!!

just to add to the great pram debate...I have been reading about the need for baby to lie flat to guard against back, digestion and respiratory problems (plus I don't like seeing new babies slumped in the bottom of these travel system seats like bean bags!)...I asked MW and she agreed that babies should only be in 'infant carriers' for an hour or so at a time.

So...why isn't everyone told this? Why are travel systems so popular and why don't their promotional materials warn us?

My brand new niece sits in her carrier in the house (instead of a bouncer), in the car and it fits into her pram...

I have mentioned it to SIL but feel like I am meddling. Any thoughts you lot?

Chloe55 · 29/09/2005 16:08

I am in complete agreement that a baby should have regular opportunities to lie flat - in fact that is what I am looking for when I see prams.

flamebat · 29/09/2005 16:09

For us it came down to space... Travel system would fit in the car, pram wouldn't. Thought it would be more cost effective as she got older too, but it turned out that I used a buggie more than the TS pushchair.

No idea what I'm doing this time. The main benefit of TS is that (although they aren't meant to be in the seat that long) you can just take the seat out, put it on wheels and go round shops without waking the baby you've spent hours trying to get to sleep. I can think of nothing worse than a sleepless night of pleading with a newborn to sleep, going out and they finally fall asleep, for them to wake up as you transfer them from carseat to pram

flamebat · 29/09/2005 16:11

At the end of the day, a newborn is used to lying curled up anyway - which is why I'm leaning towards sling more than anything.

teuch · 29/09/2005 16:12

I agree with the convenience of the TS - that's why we nearly got one - but why don't they tell you that babes shouldn't be in it for too long? (however 'too long' is!)

teuch · 29/09/2005 16:13

ah! sling...hadn't thought of that! How are they if you have C-section?

flamebat · 29/09/2005 16:16

No idea... will ask around, quite a few friends use them.

kando · 29/09/2005 17:19

Hello ladies. Good to hear all is going well, and we're all excited about scans etc! I don't have mine for another couple of weeks, when I'll be 25 weeks by then. Seems rather late but they do anomoly scans a bit later in Holland, and the gynae said that was the first available date. (Wasn't going to argue with him - he was wearing rather strange coloured trousers, which were rather off-putting to say the least!) Can anyone tell me when I should be having blood tests done? I've had one set done at my booking in appointment when I was about 10/11 weeks, also had my urine checked, but since then nothing. I can never remember how often they do the blood tests, although I do remember from previous 2 pgs that urine tests were more or less every time you saw the midwife. I don't see anyone until my scan, then I have an appointment with gynae for a couple of days later. Anyone got any ideas? Ta.

TicTac · 29/09/2005 18:07

hi all,

When I was looking at Prams, John Lewis sell the one we are likely to buy and the advisor there told me that babies should not be kept in an infant carrier/ car seat for anything more then an hour. The pushchair we are getting has an additional wedge that increases that time to about 3 hours as baby can lie more flat...it was a selling point.

If you want a scan at the show I would book now because DH rang to ask what you got for your £35 and they implied they where booked up!

Mum22soon - I had 4D scan - AMAZING experience and if you can afford it (we didn't have it in UK, we did it in Canada) then I would deff have one done!

It is our wedding anniversary today so DH and I are out for a romantic dinner for 2 so I will catch up later or tomorrow!
xx

Tabs · 29/09/2005 18:16

Ok, going to try and catch up on thread a bit at a time, so there may now follow a whole series of posts from me (if the vacuum cleaner doesn't come and grab me again in the meantime ).

TicTac - go buy the stuff you want! Otherwise you could say pregnancy isn't viable until 24 weeks, and then you could worry about a still birth up to 40 weeks, and then cot death for a year or two, and your poor child will be in school before you've bought anything, by which time you'll be worrying about it getting knocked down by a bus on the way!!

I actually bought my first thing yesterday. Just a little toy, but it's a soft thing with diff textures to it which will be lovely from birth. V exciting!

Poppyh - welcome - sorry I must have missed your post yesterday!

As for babyshow, if 3K and TicTac are going on the Sunday then I definitely am too, so that we can all meet up. We must sort out details nearer the time.

M22S - not sure about antenatal interview. I normally see community midwife at local GP surgery, but had to see one at hospital when I was 12 weeks. Think it was standard practice to see them once, but not sure, as I also had to see consultant on that occasion.

As for mat leave, still hoping to start mine pre-Christmas, but really depends on how project for current client is going. Thought I'd be done by end of Oct, but other projects are delayed which has knock on effect on mine, so may still end up doing a day or two a week in Jan - will play it by ear and see how things go. Obviously no paid holiday or ML for me, so I can really do what I feel like!

That's enough for one post - back shortly for another!

OP posts:
Tabs · 29/09/2005 18:41

MrsDoolittle - how did scan go? Did you find out the flavour? And why not on for 4 weeks - have you just done your house move?

Ladies - I had heard that the 10 movements a day thing is from 28 weeks, so we still have a way to go yet. Amanda - I def wouldn't worry about not feeling lots at 19 weeks. It's only the last week or so that I have started to expect movement a few times a day every day, and I'm now 22 weeks.

As for the Phil and Teds pram, I think it tends to provoke really strong love it or hate it reactions from most people. I think Misdee (on MN) has one and loves it, but others are anti because child in back is so low to the floor. If you only want it for 1 child then that's not such an issue, but most people who get this one seem to do so because of its convenience for 2! I've tried pushing it in showroom, but is MUCH heavier to move than the one that I'm having.

If you want one for just one child that is expensive but will last, then you may want to look at the mountain buggy (which I'm getting). There are lots of threads on MN about it if you search the archives. Guy we spoke to in Kiddicare said that MB don't even have a returns department, because no-one ever returns anything!

Teuch - I think that most reputable companies do now warn about the 2 hour rule for travel seat/prams, but it's only the last couple of years that this info has been understood and passed on. I overheard John Lewis woman advising someone on it at the weekend.

Kando - have only had one set of blood tests, and not expecting to have any more apart from glucose tolerance test. Think they only test again if there's reason to suggest that something needs checking (eg iron levels I suppose).

TicTac - happy anniversary!

Phew - think I've caught up, albeit in brief!

Hello everyone

Yes have looked into the 4D scans but as much as i would love to have it the time isnt right to be spending all that money. this is very sensible fo me as i would normally just go out and do it regardless.

Amanda1 - With regards to not feeling much i still only feel faint movement in the evenings really i certainly havent had any kicking yet so i wouldnt worry. My friend has just started feeling hers kick and she is 22 weeks.

3k - Thanks for the info on babyshow ive called them but have to call back tomorrow to book - if theres any places left.

Frizbe · 29/09/2005 19:27

how many messages in one day!

Spacecadet, congrats on your girl

Chloe, grr at your dh, I think 6 weeks off is fine, especially if you hate your job! by that stage, your usually getting fed up with being huge anyway, so the only way to spend your time should be in front of the tv, with discovery health on/this morning etc etc, all the spam you never normally watch, but will become an avid fan of during the weeks prior to and post birth (as you can't get off the sofa for BF after!)
Good advice there from yeahbut!
Tictac, happy aniversary! oh re the sickness thing, I think amanda was lucky to get away with sickness, so close to maternity starting, as legally they can start your maternity any time after 26 weeks, if you go sick.....
Still undecided on buggies here, need a two seater, that lies flat.....really like the skywalker, but its from 3 mths.....E3 expensive, rest to bulky.....ermmmm

JuA · 29/09/2005 19:48

I am very jealous of everyone thinking about getting E3's. I had persuaded dh that it was the buggy to have (before we knew we were having twins). I think we are going to get a maclaren duo now - because it is one of the few doubles that is suitable for 2 new borns that I can get in the boot of my car! dd is just going to have to walk! I don't think I will be going out much on my own with all 3 anywhere that requires alot of walking!
I feel lots less movement on the days I am working - I think it is just cos I am rushing about and notice it less - although this morning I could see my bump moving in the middle of a meeting - it was a tad distracting but much more interesting than the meeting!
I have filled in my application for maternity leave. I will officially start 01.01.2006 but my last working day will be 01.12.2005 - I seem to have loads of annual leave to use up I will be 30 weeks when I finish - I also have about 1.5 days of time owing so I will probably work some shorter days towards the end to use it up.
Chloe - finishing 6 weeks before your due date seems reasonable to me. Ultimately it is up to you - every pregnancy is different - just remind dh you are looking after yours and the babies health and that is the most important thing.

Frizbe · 29/09/2005 19:51

JuA you can get buggies that seat 3 u know?! they're just in one long line, so still go round shops, not sure how they fit into cars tho....

amanda1 thread hijack sorry - can you confirm what your doing regarding attending the xmas do - on the xmas doo thread . ta xx

flamebat · 30/09/2005 09:15

Kando - As far as I remember I only had the first bloods taken last time and no others.

Who was I talking to about slings?

The response came back that they are fine from the same time as carrying a baby would be after a c-section (this is a ring sling they are talking about, not the frame type ones that look like a rucksack), if anything it is better than normal carrying a baby after c-section because the weight is spread more evenly across your back, straining you less.
