I have opened the virtual gin, found the Desperate Romantics and am about to start playing I've Never. Who's with me?

Medee · 04/10/2010 21:40

Glad to hear about your nephew, Muse.

We've not yet decided - leaving most of the research to MrM as he likes that kind of thing - but while it needs to be nippy for the city, we need more resilient tyres for when we take trips into the country. I liked the two ICandy's we saw in JL, and the Bugaboo they had was pretty smart too. Have ruled out Silver Cross. Planning a trip home soon, so shall visit the Glasgow Pram Centre which has loads of selection (also online.)

Medee · 04/10/2010 21:41

I've discovered that turning while tap dancing is no longer working for me, so am stepping back from those steps (just doing them straight) - haven't been to a ceilidh in ages.

rocketleaf · 04/10/2010 21:55

I am a bit confused by the pram thing too, we need a 'travel system' as no doubt I will be carting the nipper up and down to see g'parents and auntie/cousins etc. Bugaboos seem horrendously over priced tho although there are some bargains on ebay. I quite like that Musty 4 rider but that will no doubt be as expensive. At least we have ages to figure it out...

Backinthebox · 04/10/2010 22:34

Don't ask me about prams. With first child we spent ages deliberating over a pram, bought our carefully selected brand, and promptly trashed it by rolling it every day through building site mud. So OH took to carrying DD all the time in a sling in a manner which scared me and clearly pissed DD off, so much so we ended up making an impulse purchase of a Maclaren buggy on a shopping trip for an unrelated item. OH reasoned that all his bloke mates recommended Maclarens, probably because their is a Formula One team named the same. Hmm I hated it so much I accidently ran it over, (sans child, of course!) Then I bought a Mamas and Papas buggy in the New Year sales - hideous orange and purple colour but did everything I wanted it to, only to have the wheels trashed by various family members ramming through the snow in the Arctic Circle - not an activity I think it was designed for. At that point I gave up on prams, having mastered my choice of sling and being a mean enough mother to make my child walk everywhere.

This child is having the remains of the first mud-trashed pram, which was lent to mountain-biking friend who cleaned and fixed it up. We are just about to embark on another building project, so I will have the opportunity to hammer it through mud again Grin. When I need a buggy I will buy one of those ones for a tenner from the supermarket, and use my sling the rest of the time. Can't be doing with the idea of a 4 yo who won't sleep unless they are in their pram! And as for families who take the baby version of a tank to the airport and try and get it on the plane - can't you manage without it for a couple of hours? It's a bit different if you are, say, a mother of tiny twins travelling alone except for your kids, but families where mummy and daddy and one kid in a monster truck pram maybe need to rethink their travel priorities! (And tin helmet firmly in place Grin)

Muser · 04/10/2010 22:38

I would like to use a sling as much as possible. Just need to figure out which kind of sling.

rocketleaf · 04/10/2010 22:39

No i think you are right, I really want to use a sling but having slipped a disk last year don't want to rely on it fully. Be interested to hear what sling you use/like too. :o TBH we are going to end up with a second hand ebay jobbie regardless as I've just spent the pram money on an iphone. :o

AlpinePony · 05/10/2010 06:31

Muser My boss's SIL had emcs at 31 weeks due to pre-eclampsia. Baby stayed in SCBU for 5 weeks I think but she's absolutely fine. Naturally she was a bit small but had no health problems per se. Mine and curly's were both preemies and although they're smaller than other babies their age, they're both fine & dandy.

rocket She greatly admires my tits! Wink

Prams - hmmn, well, we spent a grand sum of 125 euros on a second hand quinny. Very happy with it! The pram bit quite frankly is a PITA. You become one of "those women" who block aisles in shops and they're fucking enormous - but oddly the babies grow out of them very quickly.

The maxi-cosi obviously is needed for car journeys but because of the restricted movement you risk this: resources2.news.com.au/images/2007/03/03/va1237236510168/Babies-5405954.jpg Shock.

When you're out with the pram people get right up in your face, poke, prod & want to touch the baybee. Hmm Fuck to the off.

The buggy will be a god-send, however these travel systems are fucking enormous. We have a large car... but when it's in the boot there's really not much room for dogs/horse blankets/shopping.

The harness/sling is worth its weight in gold.

For the next one I will not bother with the travel system but instead will sink cash in to a very good buggy which folds away in to nothing and is light to carry.

AlpinePony · 05/10/2010 06:33

What I mean with the flat head syndrome is that if you use the maxi-cosi as a pram rather than simply a car-seat you run the risk of ending up with a helmet on your child and horrified looks. But you might be able to claim more benefits if that's your style... Wink

maswera · 05/10/2010 08:47

We are getting the best type of pram... the free type Grin. Have no idea what make it is yet, but figured that we know feck all about prams anyway so don't have a preference.

Any advice on slings? We went to look for one the other day but M&P only had one sort in and without the 10lb baby in it it's kinda hard to know what you want it to do...

Muse - glad to hear nephew is OK

Any news from familyVAG?

rollerbaby · 05/10/2010 09:15

Ha ha - we got the free pram offer too. Which did somewhat help us with the eventual choice of Bugaboo. We got this mainly because everyone rates it, we have a massive car boot, I'll be doing loads of walking to the shops 5 minutes on foot from house and wanted the option of lie down pram (you can't put your shopping in a sling). That said, we've got the Baby Bjorn for out and about and the moby sling (basically a long piece of scarf) for me which holds the baby really close to you and is a bit more comfy around the house I imagine. Rocker that might be better for your back perhaps?

The other benefit of having pram bassinet from Bugaboo is that it doubles as a travel cot and they can sleep overnight in it. Because obviously we will be going on lots of minibreaks in the first 6 months :)

How are okie, Silver and witty* feeling? You all sleeping ok? It really fecking hurts turning over now - all the muscles at the bottom of the bump and in my front pelvis are a bit sore again. But it only really bothers me at night when I need to flip over.

silver are you feeling "ready" yet? I'm very curious to know whether you know it's coming, or whether it just creeps up on you. I don't feel exactly desperate to give birth yet. So maybe I'm not quite cooked. MW 36 week app tomorrow and I think I'll get one more scan to check the hugeness before the dr tries to persuade me that a HB is not a great idea.

Dog ate through my flipping brand new M&P yummy mummy nightie (luckily as a virgo I bought 2). There is a huge hole right under my arse. Beautiful. Oh well that's the decision about what I'm going to labour in sorted. The maternity PJs I bought are truly awful and I look like a giant pink blob so okie we need to get to Westfield pronto... Also want to check out your Polarn shop... lovely stuff.

Today is hospital bag day.

laurielou · 05/10/2010 09:45

Morning!

muse am so pleased that nephew is doing well. What a worry! Congrats to FamilyMuse

Rocket I'm actually beginning to wonder if you are me Confused. Not only were we FCFU twins, but I too had a slipped disk. We need to be in the same room to put my mind at ease.

My God, this is going to be a long 9 months. I've already had enough of this feeling nauseous. Pliz to tell - if you are actually sick do you feel better? However, I do seem to have found that ready salted crisps & travel sickness bands have helped a bit. Thankfully I'm wearing long sleeves as the bands do look a bit 1980's sweat band-ish, but frankly, I don't care. I also had a cracking headache, so decided to buy that 4Head instead of popping pills. The advert shows a woman repeatedly sweeping this stick across her head. Dear God, I did one streak & felt my face start to burn off. But it did make me forget my headache Grin

Moo hospital bag day - good luck!

SomethingSuitablyWitty · 05/10/2010 09:52

Hello all,

Muse congrats on the arrival of baby nephew. How fabulous that the little mite is breathing on his own - he sounds like a brave and strong little fellow. Hope you get to see him soon and your bro and SIL of course.

I am on kind of low form again - seems like every time I relax, something else comes and bites me on the ass.Sad I went to the midwives' practice last night after work - I had a quick check-up scheduled before the pre-natal class, which I was looking forward to. Any, the first thing was a positive, if 'trace', result for protein with the pee stick. Then the midwife took my blood pressure and then took it again with a worried expression, and told me it was 'quite high'. It was 140/90, which it turns out is the exact cut off point between high and normal.

So then I had to ditch the class and go into hospital with boyfy to the delivery ward and spend the evening being monitored in case of pre-eclampsia. It was kinda reasuring I guess - clear blood and urine results from the lab - and blood pressure that went back down to normal quickly, though it swooped back up again twice - both times when the doctor was in actually talking to me or some medical procedure was taking place. I was allowed head home around 11.30pm and told to go back to the midwife at the end of the week for another check-up.

Sorry for the super long me me me post.Sad I just feel so worried and helpless. I know Ski has been through this and that there's no need to panic as such. I just don't know what to do. I am supposed to be watching out for swelling and headaches and changes in vision - all of which I am perfectly capable of imagining. Wink just dunno what to do for the best really...Should I still be working? Have a wedding this weekend - should I go? Is a sunroof delivery looming on the horizon...?

Anyway, thanks for putting up with this interminable post. I have a Quinny Buzz by the way - only because a friend had one that was used for a year, with all the accessories and bits in very good nick and was keen to sell it on, so that took care of that. It does seem like it should be the job alright.

Honey turning over at night is a horror. My back makes a grinding noise that is just scary and I feel a bit strained around the pelvis too... inevitable I reckon.

OkieCokie · 05/10/2010 10:37

Muse glad the neff is doing ok Smile.

Wit and moo I also ache when I turn over in bed, I need at least 4 pillows around me to keep me wedged comfortably. It even hurts to walk as the little blighter clearly is positioned right on my bladder.

Wit when are you scheduled to finish work? I think your body may be trying to say "take it easy Ms Wit" and you could maybe do with either a couple of days off work or finishing a tad early. My midwife was incredulous when I said I was working so close to my due date last time.

Alpine mini C has a head like that Sad although he does have a very good head of hair which kind of covers it . It is not from being in the car seat permanently either. I have become less bothered about is as time has gone on.

Re prams, I rate the Bugaboo. Expensive yes but worth the money - light and easy to manoeuvre and not massive. I have the Gecko which is a bit lighter than the chameleon but I don't think they do now though. You can also get very good bargains on eBay when people like me sell them when they are only a year old realising the need a fucking double pram (not that I have sold mine yet as I think I will still use it!). For London based pram hunters this site is also good for 2nd hand prams in good condition.

rollerbaby · 05/10/2010 10:47

witter please please stop work if you can and just chill out. I think okie's right - your body is telling you to slow down and I'm sure it's nothing more sinister than that. I can't imagine being in a constant state of worry is doing much for your work productivity or BP for that matter. Honestly, a few weeks will not make a difference in the scheme of life, but might make all the difference to how you feel in the lead up to D day.

okie I need more pillows. I'm having mr moo's tonight. He can sleep on the mattress - might stop the snoring. I might also pop the waterproof protector on this week...

laurie sleep is the only medicine for MS and headaches. I took a sicky of a week on the worst week. Do what you need to do - don't limp on if you feel truly horrendous.

Casserole · 05/10/2010 11:06

Morning all. Feel rubbish today. Headache, nausea, cramps. Am entirely likely to forget to pick mini up from pre school. If you see me on here around 12.15, shout at me...!

Have just put in an extenuating circs form to have my exam this weekend deferred. I think they'll be ok with it, had to defer another one a month ago. I'll just sit them for the first time while others do resits in December. I just can't concentrate on my screen / textbooks for long enough without needing to puke, and the tablets make me so sleepy I can't stay awake long enough to read! So I know it's the wise thing. But I hate hate HATE feeling weak / like a failure.

Travel systems etc - we had one and it was brilliant for ease, but ministew did get a slightly flattened head at one point! As soon as he started crawling / being off his back though it righted itself. I'll use it again, definitely, but will just make sure I get him out of it rather than letting him sleep when we get to wherever we're going.

Muse just seen about your neph. Sorry it was all so scary, so glad he's doing well.

Sorry to all the newly nauseous / puking.

Witty I'd say rest whenever you can. When are you finishing work?

OkieCokie · 05/10/2010 11:15

Moo are you still in the same bed??? We always start off together but I end up leaving or kicking him out at some point every single night. I can't remember the last time we woke up in the same bed! It is all fun and games chez okie at about midnight! FWIW I remember being an incredibly light sleeper last time too and then once baybee came along being totally able to sleep back in marital bed again, I am just hoping this will happen again and we are not destined to be single sleepers for the rest of our lives!

OkieCokie · 05/10/2010 11:16

Cass sorry to hear you are feeling shit. I think deferring is an excellent idea

Scorpette · 05/10/2010 11:46

Witty, hope you're feeling better today Sounds like it really is time to start taking it totally easy and take as much you-time as poss

Laurie, having just started vomming instead of just feeling nauseous, I can say that, for me, throwing up is a bit better than just feeling vom every second. But not hugely better, sorry Sad Best advice I got was to eat little and often, which has helped a bit. Acupuncture is really helping curb the worst of the nausea, so is summat to look into.

Pramz: I want an iCandy. When we were in JL, me and TYF looked at their massive range and we liked all the features of their range the best (also they have great colour options. Shallow, moi? Grin). Also want a sling. Am in awe of my pal who has omg-twinz and carries both of them in a special twin-sling even though they're now v big at 18 months - is a good job she's a sturdy lass. :)

PerfectDromedary · 05/10/2010 12:16

Very gentle hairstrokes to all those feeling fragile. Fingers crossed that this too shall pass.

Am pretty much convinced that I'm not going to bother buying a pram, as it will be totally incompatible with London transport. But am I being insane? I was thinking one of these, one of these and a buggy that takes me through from newborn to whenever should be ok...

OP posts:
Scorpette · 05/10/2010 12:56

Gah, am not going to buy a pram, but one of those adaptable 857-in-one thingies.

CurlyCasper · 05/10/2010 12:58

Hello lovelies,

sorry so many of you are feeling crap. Hugz all round.

muser Glad to hear of your nephew's safe arrival. Sure it was scary for a bit, but he will do just fine now. They know what they are doing.

On the pram front, I too have the Quinny Buzz and find that it's actually one of the smaller travel systems, judging by what I have seen out and about. I didn't buy the carrycot bit. Just use the car seat when needed or the standard pushchair base, which has an insert that makes it suitable for newborns. It can be set so it is completely horizontal, so fine for wee babies. I don't think any pram/seat is more likely thank another to cause a flat head, after all, they are just sitting/lying the way the would in their basket/cot/bouncy chair.

I have no complaints yet about my Quinny. I could squeeze it into the KA when I had it, and it now goes nicely in the boot of the saloon. It's easy to put together and lift etc, which was important for crippled little me Grin And it was not as expensive as the iCandy, P&T, Bugaboo etc.

SilverSky · 05/10/2010 13:23

switzerland think your bod is saying enuff already. It's time for tv, nice food and lots of relaxation. Bloody scary and hope you are ok. Easy to say don't fret but seriously take it easy lady.

moo I don't feel ready just yet. Baybee doesn't feel ready. Apart from constantly dropping stuff and almost breaking my back to pick the stuff up I am ok. The butt grapes are a bit of an ishoo in that going to the lol can be a bit of a challenge. Sleeping is fine. I don't even bother turning over cos it makes me feel sick. Like a bowling ball changing sides.

Gotta go HI giving me grief and we are popping out. Back later.

Muser · 05/10/2010 14:23

Drom I know a few people whose babies just hated slings. I think some sort of other option you can use from when they're first born is a good idea, just in case.

I don't drive and will be entirely reliant on London's public transport system to get around. That's why I'm thinking Bugaboo Bee, as I have been told they are easy to carry up and down stairs, easy to fit into the wheelchair space on buses (when wheelchair is not there obviously) even if there is another pram there and easy to get on the bus in the first place.

Muser · 05/10/2010 14:25

Switty I agree with what everyone else said. Rest.

maswera · 05/10/2010 14:44

I am just off for my first midwife appointment Grin
