Hello all,

I just realised I put the 1000'th message on our last thread (uh oh, I think that's the limit), so in my Blush at not realising I'd reached the limit, thought I'd better start a new thread if anyone finds it.

OP posts:

There's so much conflicting advice about the make up of formula. Apparently it needs to be added to water that is at least 70 degrees so that it is sterile but not boiling water as this kills the nutrients.

The easiest thing to do is buy the cartons. They can be given at room temperature and then stored in fridge once opened. If you make up formula with room temperature water it can make the baby ill. It's a small risk and plenty of people do it and their babies don't get ill but it can still happen.

Wanderingsheep · 17/09/2010 18:44

Angels, I think the advice is (or was when I had DD) to boil the water but let it cool as you shouldn't add formula to boiling water, then make up the formula and put it in the fridge and heat when you need it. Just like you said basically but not with boiling water.

They tell you not to use a microwave but I don't see anything wrong with using a microwave, personally, so long as you shake it thoroughly to get rid of any heat spots!

smallblackflowers · 17/09/2010 19:46

No formula advice from me - DD only had breastmilk, which I found incredibly cheap and convenient - too lazy to get out of bed in the night Grin DH built us a sidecar crib that fitted onto the side our our bed so all I had to do was pull her towards me and latch her on, meant that I barely had to wake up and could even doze throughout the feed.

debka · 17/09/2010 20:23

Congrats on your girl ledkr and boy sbf- we are hoping for a boy too, will find out next week!

Am a total ignoramus when it comes to formula too, DD never had a bottle. Am v v v lazy mother- also did BLW and she makes her own dinners now she is 18mo (just kidding!).

Got my quadruple test results back- 1 in 4400 chance of DS- that's good I think! Apparently for my age at term (which will be thirty ONE, thanks for reminding me NHS!), risk is normally 1:830.

smallblackflowers · 17/09/2010 20:29

debka great quad test results! I also did BLW and will never recommend any other way, if you don't mind a bit of mess it is certainly the way to go! When is your DD's birthday? I'm only asking as mine is also 18 months (3rd March 09), and we'll be having very similar age gaps, and very similar approaches to motherhood Smile

worrymummy · 17/09/2010 21:19

Congratulations ledkr and sbf thats fantastic news, so excited for you!!

ledkr · 17/09/2010 21:39

sbf great news congrats,Arent we all getting spoiled with our gender prefs. I am so excited at the thought of another dd and dont even get me started on the clothes. I bought a tiny t shirt that says "little sister" and gave it to dd, she was thrilled.
Thanks for the formula advice. trojan i did similar with dd at night and when i went out. I never heard about the water thibng. I know if its too hot it goes lumpy. Tbh we used to make up the bottles for 24 hrs and keep them in the fridge but yes its all changed.I fed my ds's untill over a yr but then had to have double mastectomy so im afraid i have no choice. I did say to dh today that we should get in on nhs as not my fault i cant feed.haha
Can i make it clear that the microwave is not due to extreme lazyness but i am on the atic floor and having a c section so do not fancy 3 trips down to kitchen every night whilst baby wakes up the whole house and bottle warmers are very slow. I have a little laundry room on the same floor as me so will put it in there.
The film was VERY scary.I loved it.Is anyone else feeling abit vulnerable? I am usually a right feisty pants but was walking thru towm with dh (6ft 4 copper btw) and felt like was going to be attacked.Aslo when swimming i think im going to get kicked.Am i going bonkers?
debka what arelief for you. Great news.
angelskeep listening out for that squeaky wheel.

moonminmama · 17/09/2010 23:24

Congratulations on the scan news to everyone! Such happy news all around Smile

As for feeding, I used Dr Brown bottles with ds and will DEFINATELY be using then with dd( first time I have referred to her as dd on hereSmile) ds did not suffer with wind at all. My of course have been coincidence but I am not going to run the risk. They are expensive, but very well worth it in imo.

I used sma gold with ds too and have started to stock up on it for dd. I am aware however that she may hate it and I may have to go out and buy a load if something different Hmm

moonminmama · 17/09/2010 23:28

ledkr I have become amlittle more apprehensive in school. I have started to hang back in my classroom avoiding crowded corridors etc. I went mental at a pupil this week because he pushed a pupil who banged into me. Luckily bumping into my back, I still completely lost it and went into pg woman mode shouting "I'm pregnant you silly boy! " he was mortified bless him.

My hubby is a copper too btw :)

ledkr · 18/09/2010 07:42

Moomin glad its not just me. I am a sw and am used to filthy houses but went tot the worst one ever last week and then the little girl 5 fell onto my bump. Noty hard but i felt like crying. Mum chain smoked thru the whole thing and then i asked to use the loo which was UNUSABLE so had to make a 45 min journey home with painfull full bladder.I felt very precious which is so unlike me.
Has anyone got spd yet?Im sure mine is looming. If i walk a lot or get very full bladder-both yeaterday. It really hurts but goes off with rest. Notsure whether to see osteopath(who claims to be father of Mike J s kids)
There are a few of us married to coppers. After the babies come we should start a separate thread to moan about them being constantly late off shift or getting phonecalls on days off etc.

wigglesrock · 18/09/2010 07:42

Congrats ledkr really pleased for you, have been at work for past few days and am getting ready to go in now but just wanted quick check to see how you got on.

My 20 week scan is in 10 days and I really can't wait. Still haven't told my 2 dds so am looking forward to that, I think!!! Just anticipating a barrage of "how did baby get in", "how does it get out" etc. Would it be really mean for me to say "ask your teacher!" Grin. Also have dd2 birthday, dh birthday etc coming up before Christmas and am trying to psych myself up for some early Christmas shopping before I miss the money!!!

Have got a little more nervous re driving and walking up and down the stairs carrying washing etc. Our bedroom is also at the top of the house and I am so out of breath now going up and down the stairs, not sure how I'll make it to Feb!!

Have a lovely Sat everyone.

Tarlia · 18/09/2010 07:53

Congratulations on the girl Ledkr and boy SBF!

With regards to formular, it is still ok to make up formular and refrigerate for 24 hours, but they say that it should have been made with water at 70 degrees. That's 1lr or water in a kettle left to cool for 30 mins before pouring and making. All this aside, I've always done the room temperature bottles and never had a sick baby, these things change all the time, same goes for when to wean.

If I have to use bottles I'll def be using a microwave, but there is always the option of getting a kettle and a jug for your attic Ledkr, probably be cheaper.

I'm so surprised to hear about the many happy babies on SMA, it's one of the formulars that most harsh on the tummy.

wigglesrock · 18/09/2010 08:11

Tarlia Making up bottles and keeping them in fridge, not recommended now, it was fine when I had dd1 5 years ago but advice had changed when I had dd2 3 years ago Confused. I got an extra kettle for bottles and it was brillant, meant water could cool down for 30 mins but I could have tea whenever I wanted!! The bottle/breast feeding section here has lots of advice re making up formula but it can be a bit shouty and judgy, mind you that's Mumsnet Grin

As you can see still haven't got off my bum to get ready for work!!

Wanderingsheep · 18/09/2010 08:14

Morning Smile

Tarlia, is it really? We used SMA for DD and had no problems but no one would advise us either way as they're not allowed. Might try something different this time, if that's the case!

Hope everyone has a lovely day today!

wigglesrock · 18/09/2010 08:18

I used SMA for my two, it was one of the two formulas the hospital offered, never had any bother with it.

Wanderingsheep · 18/09/2010 08:18

Wigglesrock, I said the exact same thing as Tarlia too! So that's not ok anymore? Aaargh! Formula make up is such a PITA! Grin

angels1 · 18/09/2010 08:20

On the subject of those going to use bottles, tarlia reminded me of something I remember being taught in university (did nutrition). My lecturer said if you buy baby formula you should always try and find one that includes 'DHA' (I forget what it stands for but think the A is for Acid. It's an essential fatty acid (like the omega 6 type thing you may have heard of) which is present in breast milk but not always in formula. It's shown to be important in the development of babies I believe. You may all already know this, or by now they may all include it, but thought I would pass on my possible wisdom (of which I don't have much of!). I'm hoping to breast feed but I know it's not always possible/can be harder than it seems so keeping open mind.

ledkr I'm still having nightmares of the squeeking pram Wink

OP posts:
angels1 · 18/09/2010 08:22

Oh, and I was thinking last night - what happens after babies are born? Do we all just leave the thread and never know how we're all getting on, or is there a post natal thread we can all moan about sleepless nights/discuss baby poo etc on? Feels would be a shame to not know how everyone is getting on with their babies, but maybe I'm being unrealistic and we'll be too busy (??).

OP posts:
Tarlia · 18/09/2010 08:32

wigglesrock it is ideal to make as and when needed but they understand for practical reasons this is not always possible, so it's fine for 24 hours so long as it's kept in the fridge.

Anyone who is interested in swatting up in advance, here is a PDF of the guidelines...
www.who.int/foodsafety/publications/micro/pif_guidelines.pdf Hope this works, scroll through a few pages until you get to 'in the home' where you can read what they suggest and resons why.

W.Sheep If your DD was fine with SMA then it's possible that next baby will be too, sorry I didn't mean to panic anyone! In the past I have found that babies tend to have more tummy problems and sickness whilst on SMA which then improve when switched. All babies are different, if only they could read books and understand the rules and what's expected of them Grin, would make our lives so much easier! hehe

ledkr · 18/09/2010 08:35

we start a post natal one which we will hardly get time to go on and we will long for these days.
Thanks wrigglesmy dd is 8 so i think she has some idea. Have not done the big talk yet tho. She refers to it as "it"i cant bear the thought of her knowing ive done "it"haha
Yeah the kettle is agood idea and far less frivalous.
wriggles i am feeling a bit panicky about dosh too. Have xmas me and dh b'days dd b'day and baby stuff to buy. Wanted to clear the cards before my money went down too.
I am having stuff off dgs but when i thought about it when looking in boots it still felt like alot.
Going to try and make a pact with family about cost of pressies and have told dh to re think his list,he is still buying for cousins and their partners and kids and they never send anything for us!

ledkr · 18/09/2010 08:41

tarliathanks for the congrats. I am going to make mine up a few in advance esp as having a c section so dh can make them before work. DD was fine on them. Some people on mn dont even steriliseShock
And im not sure i can be having dd2 in with me for 6 months either. I am very light sleeper and also like to have my tv on at night or go on i phone. Also do my waxing toe nails etc. in there and need light.
Was thinking more like 2-3 months and my monitor has a sensor pad.
Has anyone else read the research of this as its meant to be related to cot death i think.

angels1 · 18/09/2010 08:44

whats related to cot death ledkr? I had a sister that died of cot death before I was born and am scared stiff the same might happen to my baby, so any precautions I can take are great.

OP posts:
Tarlia · 18/09/2010 08:51

Agreed, plus ask an American to sterilise and they will probably laugh in your face. They tend to just use a dish washer.

Re sleeping and SIDS, it's so that baby can regulate it's breathing with your as it sleeps, but saying that many babies are put straight into the nursery and are totally fine, so who knows if this is actually true.

Wanderingsheep · 18/09/2010 09:10

Angels, I used to post on the June 07 postnatal thread for DD. It has only just died now as they have turned 3, well no one has posted on it since July anyway, but it was going for quite a while!

Not sure about the cot death research but I know that they recommend babies to be in your room, in a separate cot for 6 months. I've heard the thing about your breathing regulating theirs too. DD went into her own room at 3 months. She seemed to be outgrowing the Moses basket anyway. I think you just need to do what suits you and the baby really. I don't think you sleep properly when you've got a baby anyway.

wigglesrock · 18/09/2010 09:20

I could only keep my dds with me at night while they were in Moses basket, bedroom too small for cot and double bed, DD1 was in her own room from 4.5mths and dd2 from slightly younger (she was bigger). There was a thread about sleeping in the same room earlier in the week. Think it was in AIBU or Chat if that help Angels

I made up my night-time bottles in advance, no other way, with a 2 year old, vvvv demanding baby!! and dh working shifts!! I also was a bit steriliser careless after 6 mths Blush.

Right definitly going to work soon!!
