Newgirl glad scan went well!

DHW a friend of mine had the snip a while back and said it was the biggest his balls had ever been was rather proud of them at the time!

I'll just throw in my vote for being a relativly nothern girl then! so we're not all from down south!

Piffy · 05/09/2005 20:22

Hi there can I join you? I'm due on 26th March. I've just discovered this place after loads of browsing - it's my first time pregnant so it's all a bit new to me! Quite amazed at all the stuff there is to learn about, all the things I never knew! Got my 12 week scan on Monday 12th Sept but I don't know what to ask and I'm terrified I'll think of something crucial afterwards. Think it's only a dating scan but when I saw the midwife I was only 8 weeks and hadn't done any reading so did not know to ask about nuchal etc. In fact I just sat there feeling a bit out of my depth...Any tips very welcome!

RosiePosie · 05/09/2005 20:58

Hi Piffy, welcome to the thread! You don't HAVE to have a nuchal scan, it's entirely up to you. I've never had one and this is my third pregnancy. The first two times I didn't even have a 12 week scan, only the 20 week one. At my 12 week scan this time, they dated the pg, made sure everything was in the right place and measured the risk of downs ( some thing to do with fold in back of the neck ). If the risk had been assessed as more than 1 in 300 I would have then been offered a nuchal scan. Every area does things differently though. Some areas you have to pay, like newgirl just did. Good luck, anyway!

munz · 06/09/2005 08:49

RP - I was told the downs test was a blood test - is that different in diff area as well? - we've opted not to get that as to us it seemed a bit hit and miss as here they apparently take ur blood and put it into a comp with relevant factors and it kicks out an answer at you (a % or something) not v scientific then u get a call back if u're high and not if u're not.

DHW - what about gettin the injection? althou I had it once and I was so violent on it esp when it was due again, - v v bad (worse that PG hormones that was)

NG - glad ur scan went OK, and bean was happily swimmin about. Is the nuchal scan a 'normal' dating scan? - and £130 they kept u waiting hope u complained.

friz - how far north are u then? my DH is a bloomin northerner - yorkshire of all places!

piffy - hiya and welcome course u're more than welcome. good luck for the 12th. how r u gettin on so far. This is a first PG for quite a few of us here.

Welcome Piffy - I am on my first pregnancy like you - these girls are fab at help and advice - and always honest!
Friz - how far north? I am Nottingham
NG - so glad your scan went well - 130 quid but well spent. Am only planning to drink about half a litre before mine on Thurs - worried she will press down hard on my stomach and I will pee myself!

Lizzylou · 06/09/2005 09:02

HI all and welcome Piffy, congrats

My Dh has already volunteered to be "disarmed" as he puts it...men eh? ASAP after this one...!!!
I am a sort of northerner, live in Lancashire, between Manchester and Burnley (DH is from Bury) but I orginally come from Redditch in the Midlands...
Feel bit sicky again today but have been feeling loads better, glad your scan went well Newgirl...

RosiePosie · 06/09/2005 09:03

to be honest, munz - I don't really know

munz · 06/09/2005 09:07

LL - it was south crest my BF comes from - apparently it's the posh end! not a bad night out in redditch.

jack - I only had just over 1/2 a ltr and pics look good. (wasn't that much I had to pee in the room - but too much for when I got out!) lol.

OP posts:
Lizzylou · 06/09/2005 09:46

Munz...not had a night out in Redditch for years...but I think I am loads older than you...and I know Redditch has completely changed now! Southcrest is a nice area.....

munz · 06/09/2005 09:58

ah u're only as old as u feel girl! I was up there not this xmas just gone the one b4 visitin my BF hten she came to me. must get up there (althou not sure we will after beanie to stop the night as they have 2 dogs a cat and a parrot) and ahem it's not vac'ed. and the animals's ahem toileting isn't always picked up within a few hours (or straight away if they're in) and I have dogs and arn't snobby but thhat did turn my tummy a bit pre PG. my old next door neighbour was from there as well, the place beginning with W she was from - apparently it's a rough bit wood somehting I think.

newgirl · 06/09/2005 10:18

welcome piffy!! Enjoy your first scan - it is mind-blowing!!! I didn't have a nuchal first time - I had no idea these things existed and I think I was a bit in denial about a new baby until about a fortnight before she was born! - it made no difference - she still popped out and kept us up at night, all normal!!

I'd get a good book out of the library - one of the big pregnancy manuals and they give you a good idea of what's on offer - I think people tend to think of nuchals when they reach 35 so its not for everyone really. Your midwife might be able to give you leaflets about it - there are other tests for downs etc - eg cambridge test which might be a good choice.

munz - i think i will complain especially as the reason she was late was not cos of another patient or something 'proper' but because she'd come back from new york on holiday and had fallen asleep. I mean - nice work if you can get it!!

desperatehousewife · 06/09/2005 11:48

morning everyone - how is everyone? Welcome Piffy - it's all VERY exciting being pregnant - infact it's extremes of everything - gets extremely uncomfy, it's extremely scary at times, you feel extremely hormonal and tearful at times, you worry extremely etc etc!

I had the nuchal scan twice because I wanted it - I had to ask for it, and was referred to a london hospital which was amazing - didn't have to pay either.

First time round with DS1 it was called the triple test, where they combine blood results, with age results and the nuchal test (ie: thickness of baby's neck) and give you a percentage chance of downs syndrome. They test you at 12 and 16 weeks I think. This time round it was the straight forward nuchal test at 12 weeks where they measure neck, check for nose bone, assess with my age and then give a percentage, and score you with an equivilant age - ie: you have as much chance of having a downs baby as a x year old girl/woman. I was a 15 year old!! couldn't believe it! Frankly 15 year olds shoulnd't even be having sex in my opinion !

munz - don't like the sound of the injection at all - anyway with blood pressure probs they woulnd't give it to me i don't think.

Lizzylou · 06/09/2005 11:51

Munz, thats Woodrow and yes, not too nice in areas, but some bits Ok!
I asked about the Nuchal scan and was told it wasn't offered, I have been offered the triple test but have decided not to do it this time....even if it came back with a high % of downs I wouldn't have an amnio so not much point...

desperatehousewife · 06/09/2005 15:18

anyone done any buggy research yet?!

I had a mamas and papas pliko travel system for DS1 but would like something a little nippier for around town for the new baby! Any ideas on small, lightweight suitable from birth buggies that don't cost £400!?

Will be selling my Pliko no doubt if anyone is interested!

Lizzylou · 06/09/2005 15:32

I've been looking for double buggies that work just as well when singles IYKWIM, DHW...Harry will be just 2 and for long walks will still need a biggy...I love the Phil and Teds and it get great reviews, altho DH is not keen on the £350+ price tag!

Lizzylou · 06/09/2005 15:33

"biggy" I obv meant buggy!

desperatehousewife · 06/09/2005 15:39

I would deffo go for a phil and teds if i had a 2 year old. My DS is 3 and still falls asleep in buggy after lunch if we are out all day. But by the time the baby has stopped being carted round in the papoose, my DS will be 4 and I don't think i can justify buying a double. Which is a shame, because I drool over the p&t one! Why don't you keep an eye on ebaby for a second hand one?

Lizzylou · 06/09/2005 15:42

I am, but waited for the scan first and then will have to wait until next payday for DH as we went mad and bought some trees at the weekend!
I love Phil and Teds...it makes me drool!
I have seen some really nice single buggys too, but can't think of their names (anyone else VERY vacant at the moment??)...will have to remember!

munz · 06/09/2005 15:43

yes we're currently on with the urban one from mothercare the travel system for £295.00 the brown one.

how about nappies - anythoughts yet? I wanted to use totsbots but DH doens't like them, he'd rather have bambino mio - might use both.

OP posts:
Lizzylou · 06/09/2005 15:44

MUnz, we have the Urban Detoour travel system at the moment...it's fab altho you do need a big boot! But really feels very substantial for the baby...like they are protected!

desperatehousewife · 06/09/2005 15:44

are they the reusable nappies munz?

Wish i'd gone down that route with first baby, then it would be worth it with this next one.

i hate to think of the landfill for nappies - it's outrageous.

RosiePosie · 06/09/2005 15:57

I've had a good play with my second hand P&T's - I'm thrilled with it! We're using it as a single with DD at the moment.

And I use reusables too, tried just about every brand over the past 4 and half years, so if you want my opinion on anything, fire away! Tot's are great if you have a tumble dryer, but take ages to dry otherwise - quite bulky, but bomb proof! There are some new, softer quick drying ones out though, which I'm going to have a look at. Not used Bambino mio's, but have used other prefolds. They're okay - but I much prefer other kinds. Not great with newborn runny poo. Am currently using pocket fuzzi's with DD, but only part time at the moment - feeling too ill and tired and do it full time!

munz · 06/09/2005 16:00

dhw - yes they're reusable i've got DH to agree to tohse but he thinks the tots look too big - might get one just to show him. PIL don't think i'll stick to doing it, but I will do!

LL - that's whta IU like about it it's all snuggly althou we have two dogs as well for the boot, so it would need to be a buggy which could go in between my drivers seat and the back seat. mum was going to get us that as the baby's pressy. I do like the prams but they're impratical for us really.

OP posts:
swiperfox · 06/09/2005 16:03

We are going to need a double buggy too me thinks. DS will be 21 months so a little bit too little to walk everywhere - although dd has walked everywhere since she was just under 3. I did have a 'coco&cream' urban detour for the first two but sold it at a car boot sale in the spring Also sold the moses basket, bath... the lot!! Oops!!

Can't believe how expensive thge nice buggies are though - looks like we'll end up with an ebay job!

munz · 06/09/2005 16:04

SF - JM's selling a double buggy on here don't think she's after much for it.
