Alice - Mmm, Pimms! I'm dreading the very thought of a sweep :-/ Up to her elbow? No thanks!! Really hope early labour doesn't go on too long for you - I think I'm going to be a total wuss because over last few days the sharp twinges down below have turned into stabbing pains that last for a minute or two and then disappear. If they are a preview of what I have to look forward to then I will be screaming for pethidine when I get to the hospital lol

Elusive - My MW doesn't really bother measuring cos she told me months ago that she thinks it can be really inaccurate etc. If baby is moving away, appears to have its head engaged, they can hear heartbeat and your blood pressure/blood sugar levels are fine then they tend to just leave you to do your own thing. So hopefully you have nothing to worry about :)

jaysfourth - I was breech and head not at all engaged until about 2 weeks ago (I'm 37+4 now) and I was freaking out about going into labour early for the same reason. Apparently, if it does happen, you're supposed to get on all fours and phone an ambulance. I'm sure they'll look after you and LO well though and they wouldn't have sent you back home if they felt there was something to worry about

I'm crippled with bloody heartburn again and still restless at night so not a lot of energy - massive contrast to last week when I was a cleaning demon. Now I'm happy to lie of sofa and leaf through paperbacks Wink

DH surprised me with a voucher for seaweed baths yesterday - went with my mum and sis last year and it was so relaxing and did wonders for my skin etc. Going to leave it until round Halloween to go, I think, but really looking forward to it as a post-baby treat Grin

Got a text from a friend who wants to meet this evening for a coffee. He's a lovely guy, known him for years, but he has that gay man thing going on where the whole pregnancy thing seems a bit beyond his realm of experience. I just feel content to read, make dinner, doze on sofa and go for a short walk everyday at the minute and find the idea of going out and having to keep up with gossip and sparkling conversation a bit much at the minute. Am I justified in putting him off or am I just being a lazy, anti-social cow??

Hope everyone else is well!!

neenz · 11/08/2010 13:30

LittleMiss, at 8m+ pg you are entitled to do whatever you want imo Smile. Say you are not feeling too well and curl up on the sofa.

thecoffeelady · 11/08/2010 13:46

Thanks neenz you DT and my DD were born in the same day so I feel better about DD now. My IL's live 5 minutes away and so MIL is on standby. Have a MW appointment in an hour so maybe she will have some good news. I have a consultant appointment tomorrow.

I am enjoying having time to read though and spending time with DP which as we are self employed is a rarity, even though we work together (sometimes in different shops which are opposite each other) we never spend any quality time together.

LittleMissSnowShine · 11/08/2010 13:48

Thanks neenz! Think I might try and meet him for lunch next week, I'm ok during the day but the evenings are just a bit beyond me in terms of socialising at the minute - bloody lack of sleep! Can someone explain how getting a couple of hours sleep at night was more than sufficient when you were 19 or 20 but is simply not enough when you're pregnant?? lol

ElusiveMoose · 11/08/2010 14:06

Neenz I was told to tuck my own sheet/duvet or whatever firmly around myself only, so that I was separated from the baby. Baby just in clothes or a sleeping bag, no sheets or duvets or pillows, so just lying flat on the mattress. Then, either put the baby in the middle of the bed (with nothing beyond it on the other side) if it's a double, or if it's a single you can put the baby to one side, with something wedged up against the bed to stop the baby falling out (has to be something hard so no risk of suffocating, and with no gap for the baby to fall down). In hospital, for example, they parked the wheely cot right up against my bed to stop the baby falling out. The real no-nos were - sleeping with two adults in a bed with the baby in the middle, and sleeping with a baby on a sofa (now one of the biggest causes of cot death, apparently Sad).

Palace39 · 11/08/2010 14:07

Following an extremely painful examination this morning where i couldn't have a sweep- wasn't viable- I am being induced this friday.. so my little boy will be here very soon! I'm terrified though as i am high risk for caesarean- eek.

It's dawned on me today just how much this is going to hurt. I've been so looking forward to him actually being here, i hadn't really thought about the labour part. Oh lord...

sparkle101 · 11/08/2010 14:25

jays agree with what littlemiss has said, I was breech for a good 8/9 weeks and then baby decided to turn (on the way to the hospital) at 36 weeks even though the consultant had said it didn't look at all likely it would turn. The MW said as long as you phone the ambulance straight away and get on all fours you'll be fine - TMI alert - my MW said that the paramedics will put their hand where it needs to go to hold the cord out of the way if necessary and will not let go until they are 'shaking hands' with the person performing the CS so there is very minimal risk to the baby.

Considering how lazy I normally am - I think nesting has kicked in - going back to the kitchen to carry on scrubbing the cupboards and may make some muffins too... maybe I should be woken up at 5:30 more often! (Although baby - if you are reading this - I'd rather have another few hours Wink)

ElusiveMoose · 11/08/2010 14:31

Palace why are you high risk for a section? (Sorry, can't remember, you've probably told us already.) Anyway, good luck for Friday! I know what you mean about labour fears. My mum said to me on the phone today that she was getting terribly impatient now for this baby to arrive, and couldn't understand why I wasn't totally champing at the bit as well. I had to restrain myself from shouting 'Because I have to push the little bugger out of my fanjo, and you don't!!' Grin

Aussieng · 11/08/2010 15:10

Hi super quick post in response to anna.

Welcome back anna. I was induced on 22 July following membrane rupture and labour fAiling to start naturally. It was absolutely fine - I had gas and air, no tearing and no over stimulation or anything like that. I did waste 6 hours hAving A prostaglandin pessAry and wished I had just gone straight on the drip but as a first timer also quite worried about induction, I would always have made the decision to try the pessary first so no point having regrets.

I had lots of watery discharge for about 2 weeks prior to SROM. Still no idea if that was waters or just discharge as lots of people seem to have that in the run up to labour. Dh and I also had sex during that time - I think that if that is in fact waters leaking then the rupture at that point must be minute so the risk of infection quite small. We were kept in hospital after the birth for a minimum of 12 hours specifically so they could monitor j for infection and he was fine. Presumably for now while you are waiting to be induced they have told you to take your temperature every 4 hours and let them know if it is elevated? Providing this stays normal I'm sure all will be well.

Good luck! I was terrified of induction but I just used the 24 hr run up to it to try to change my attitude and carry over my positive labour thoughts to a slightly revised scenario.

neenz · 11/08/2010 15:16

Elusive, thanks so much for that co-sleeping info. I was thinking a sleeping bag would prob be better (atm I just wrap a blanket right round him so not much risk of him shuffling underneath) but I think he has to be a bit bigger first for a sleeping bag. I put the moses basket right up against the side of the bed to create a barrier. I think the risk of him rolling off is so small cos I put him about a foot away from the edge of the bed and then lie about a foot away from him (and DH is on other side of me so not between us) and babies don't roll over till about 5mths so can he really roll off? He doesn't move at all atm all day or night!

pamplem0usse · 11/08/2010 17:51

Could any of you ladies who've already had babies help me?
I'm getting quite bad period style cramps but just down one side.... has anyone else experienced this in early labour?
A bit concerned as this is how my infection started out (on the other side) last time when I was hospitalised :(

SmilerJane · 11/08/2010 18:18

Hiya Everyone..

Hope you all are well and am happy 4 u all

XX T care XX

RachelParker · 11/08/2010 18:51

that alice neenz and nikalah, i decided to try the sweep but they couldn't do it in the end because it hurt too much :( but my results from the "prolonged pregnancy" report were quite good - they've given me a 9/10 odds of going into labour without induction... maybe i'll have a curry for dinner see if it does any good :)

Palace39 · 11/08/2010 19:05

Elusive i have SPD and Sciatica. Can only move around with crutches (it's rubbish as rubbish gets). I was hoping to use a birthing pool initially but the consultant said this morning that is going to be unlikely as that and induction don't really go hand in hand. Oh well, at least i can have an epidural! (I'm trying to think of the positives...)

In the meantime my insides hurt from what i found to be a truly horrible internal! I've been kicked to bits all day since...

Chulita · 11/08/2010 19:32

CazEm you sound so strong. Belle is obviously such a loved little angel!

coffee and alice I spent most of the day I was in labour with Sam crying cos I was worried about DD. She was fine apparently but I wasn't!

alice I had 6 days of early labour with DD so I feel your pain - was 3cm on the Thursday, 4cm by Saturday and she was born on the following Wednesday...utter crap it was, ctx 3-4 mins apart for 6 fricking days, I didn't sleep and was like the living dead by the time I had the emcs.

MIL's here at the mo and I'm getting so pissed off - she's here to 'help' but left 20mth old DD unattended in the bath, tells me to feed DS every time he cries (oh, you want mummy's milk) even if he's just unlatched from a 2 hour feeding frenzy, she witters non-stop about nothing, asks how I slept about 8 times before breakfast...argh! I feel bad whingeing but she totally does my nut.

ElusiveMoose · 11/08/2010 19:47

Palace poor you. God, I bet you really can't wait to get that baby out - hopefully it will completely stop the SPD and sciatica straight away. And the internal sounds horrid. They are pretty unpleasant, really, aren't they? Those metal things they use are like instruments of bloody torture.

Chulita feeling sorry for you too. It can be really hard having people in your house at such an intense time, even if they are there to 'help'. Funnily enough I find my MIL easier than my mum, in lots of ways - because although MIL irritates me in some ways, she knows when to keep her distance, whereas my own mum absolutely doesn't - she sort of follows me round the house because she's incapable of being in the same house as someone but not actually in the same room talking at to them. How long is your MIL staying?

Right, I'm off out for a curry with the girls. Probably my last night out for months, I should think. Looking forward to it (and I'm STARVING, which is good) - but I've also got some serious backache going on this evening, so I hope LO doesn't arrive in the middle of the restaurant and spoil the party Grin.

LittleMissSnowShine · 11/08/2010 19:49

Chulita - Eep, poor you! Download yourself an audiobook, put in your earphones and tune her out Grin I'm sure she means well but...

Rachel - I had curry for dinner too but that was about half an hour ago and all quiet on the LO front lol

Did lots of birth ball bouncing last night so going to try that again tonight. Maybe some pineapple too, but will def keep Gaviscon on stand-by!! Haven't done anything today, really, but still feeling really drowsy. Not unpleasant and really enjoying my trashy novel, but feels strange to be just lolling around like this. Hoping it might be my body forcing me to slow down for a couple of days cos LO is imminent???

LittleMissSnowShine · 11/08/2010 19:50

And enjoy your curry elusive!! All these girls on curry and there hasn't been a birth announcement in a couple of days...come on babies!!

Chulita · 11/08/2010 19:57

MIL's here til Friday, had my mum for 3 weeks and she was amazing but MIL's like your mum elusive has to follow me around and talk at me.

snowshine ball bouncing's supposed to be great! I went into labour during the night after a curry so maybe there is some truth in it...pineapple you have to eat an unholy amount in order to make a difference apparently.

Sam's finally nodded off, DD's prancing around in her room but I'm going to try and ignore her (til she starts hammering on the door), need some sleep. Hope to hear some birth stories in the morning!

neenz · 11/08/2010 20:38

Jane sorry you are feeling so low Sad. Have you spoken to your HV about it or your GP? You should speak to someone. Having a prem baby is very draining. How old is she now?

Doodleydoo · 11/08/2010 21:24

Just popped in to say my little man was born at 4am this morning, v successful vbac and feel completely different from the emcs last time. Was positively flying!

Anyway little man weighed in at 5lbs11 and a week early - a little bit of a shock and as yet no name! Dh delighted as am I if a little bit sore with a 2nd degree tear but worth it all!

starshaker · 11/08/2010 21:30

Hi everybody. Not had a chance to read the thread yet but thought id post my birth story.

As most of you know the twins were born on the 3rd Aug.

I started getting pains on the sat but thought nothing of it since ive had a fair few false alarms. Sunday and i was still having the pains and went up to the hospital. They said i was having mild contractions but they werent doing anything. They kept me in on the sunday night since i had my scan booked for the monday anyway.

So monday came and i went down for my scan. The consultant come up and told me that twin 2 (harry) had stopped growing and the needed to come out. I was booked in for the next available slot which was 1.30 on the tuesday. I needed to have a section as emilie was transverse. The section wasnt as bad as i though but that didnt stop me having a panic attack while they were putting the spinal in. As i was lying there i noticed i could see the reflection of what was going on. I asked them to tilt the lights so i couldnt see but it didnt work. In the end i lay there and watched my 2 babies being born. Was amazing.
I had them with me till 4am the next day then their blood sugar lvls were going low so needed to be taken into special care. Emilie finally got out of special care then a day later harry followed. Then today we finally got out. So will just need to see how things go tonight.

vitapulchra · 11/08/2010 22:26

Congratulations, Doodleydoo and Starshaker! Smile Smile How wonderful Doodley that you were able to have the VBAC that you wanted; you sound like you're feeling really well. Very happy for you!

And Star very good to hear from you. Glad you're home now with your little ones instead of having to wait til 39 weeks as before! Sounds like you've all been well taken care of, hope your first night home is good.

Congrats Doodley. Hope to hear more from you soon.

Star you pics in FB are soo cute.

Jane - sorry you are feeling so low. I think this happens a lot with prem babies - you are just not emotionally ready yet. I hope you are getting the help and support you need in RL and know that we are here for you if you need to vent.

Palace - I had sciatica too and it really kicked off during my labour. This will not nec be the same for you but I would recommend having a plan for how to deal with it if it does. Luckily my MW was a trained masseuer and aromatherapist cos I wanted to punch DH when he was complaining of his arm geting tired from massaging my thigh. Hello - I'm in labour here and you're whining about your arm being tired??

LittleMissSnowShine · 12/08/2010 01:39

Congrats Doodley!!

Pineapple was not a good idea, heartburn is terrible! Tho it's been terrible for last couple of days so curry and pineapple prob didn't make any difference tbh

Have taken up residence on the sofa, can't get comfy in bed at all Hmm

Hope there's some good trashy tv starting round about now (good god, just noticed it's 1:40am lol) to help me nod off or I'm def not going to be very functional tomorrow!!
