Hi All

This is the new thread taking over from "Feb 2011... Where only us and a select few know"

So sad that not everyone will be joining us on the new thread but here's looking to the future and hoping we start to see some lovely scans and good news from everyone in the next month

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I wouldn't worry about it Tallulah, stress is bad for the baby As long as you are eating sensibly and listening to your body then I wouldn't worry too much about counting calories or weighing yourself all the time.

Glad to hear your scan went well Prof

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 28/07/2010 17:12

NICE guidelines or not, they aren't too stressed about it in this country. The main thing they seem to be pushing is not to overeat -- you generally need a maximum of 300 extra calories a day and don't even really need that in the first trimester.

In France I think they try to keep weight gain under 10kg (about 22lb). That's because that's about how much you naturally lose in the first few postpartum weeks -- around 5kg/11lb immediately after delivery and another 5kg/11lb over the next few weeks. Not putting on any more than that is fairly challenging for most women, though. Last pregnancy I did gain 23lb overall (yay me!) but I had gestational diabetes and was on a rigidly controlled diet for much of the pregnancy (this meant that I kind of splurged a bit afterwards on carbs and put on weight after the birth. Will try not to make that mistake again...).

One book I have suggests that if you have an underweight BMI you "should" gain between 28-40lb, a normal BMI you "should" gain between 25-35lb, an overweight BMI you "should" gain between 15-25lb, and an obese BMI you "should" gain 15+lb.

Most of this weight will be gained over the last two trimesters -- so if you have a normal BMI you "should" be gaining about a pound a week over that period, and correspondingly more or less than that in the other weight ranges.

But it is very possible to over-think this. If you are eating healthily then I wouldn't worry about weight gain; if you are chugging down cakes and chocolate or sugary drinks then it may be a good idea to re-evaluate. But if you gain a bit more or less than is ideal then I don't think it's a huge problem.

TallulahBelly14 · 28/07/2010 18:14

Wow thanks both, that makes sense. I just want to strike a balance between giving the baby what it needs versus not putting on so much weight that I struggle with getting rid of it afterwards. Hopefully I won't develop any unhealthy cravings along the way!

sweetnitanitro · 28/07/2010 18:19

If you breastfeed then it can burn up to 500 calories a day and you don't even have to move off the sofa

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 28/07/2010 18:45

DS had whooping cough as a baby and as often as not would have a coughing fit and cough up an entire feed so I'd have to feed him again. It was almost like breastfeeding twins and the weight just fell off . It came as a bit of a shock when the same didn't happen after DD (who obviously was only feeding an average amount) was born (but see earlier comments about Too Much Cake that time round ).

varicoseveined · 28/07/2010 19:03

Ok I'm 10+2 and two people I bumped into at different times today asked me how far along I am! Glad that 12 weeks isn't too far away to start telling my extended family!

I had my booking in appt this week, and my scan booked for two weeks time Am ever so slightly nervous and a bit of a basketcase these days!

angels1 · 28/07/2010 19:17

does anyone know if we can take gaviscon this early? I have terrible indegestion etc and am wondering if I can take it at only 10 weeks...

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 28/07/2010 19:22

Yes, gaviscon is fine.

smallblackflowers · 28/07/2010 19:42

angels I had my first medication free day in 6 weeks yesterday - didn't feel bad at all. Took a tablet this morning as was feeling quite sick, but that was the only one today. Will try and hold off as much as possible now.

professorlayton I too had the GD diet in late pregnancy and was positively svelte when I gave birth, only to make up for it afterwards....breastfeeding is great for weight loss, but it also makes you unbelievably hungry all the time (or it did me..) in the early days. Now I find my 2 or 3 feeds per day allow me a little more freedom to nibble, and I am nearly a stone lighter now then was at 12 weeks pg with DD.

I had to rush out of a stand up meeting this morning at work that seemed to go on forever...my blood pressure is on the low side at the moment and I'm a fainter at the best of times if I stand too still for too long (crowd surfed whilst unconscious after passing out waiting for a band to come on at Reading festival in '94) anyway, felt myself blacking out so legged it to the ladies and splashed water on my face. Was prepared to tell boss when she asked if I was ok, but she didn't.....so I didn't. Feel I have missed an opportunity.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 28/07/2010 19:49

Yay for medication-free day and here's to many more!

angels1 · 28/07/2010 20:30

thanks for gaviscon advice on second thoughts though I think I could be suffering IBS, so will hold off on the medicine.

ledkr · 28/07/2010 20:49

Tarlia · 28/07/2010 21:07

So lovely to read about all of the positive scans. I can't wait for mine now! Few weeks to go yet. But It's booked! I have the doubletest on next week, they give those results on the same day as the NT here.

I had a nurses appointment today to go through my blood tests, urine sample (fine), BP( perfect), but in 2 weeks I've lost 3kg. I've also started vomiting this evening too (sorry tmi).

I've never had so much medical intervention in my life!

Hope you've all had a happy hump day x

zerominuszero · 29/07/2010 07:00

Told MIL last night. She was very happy but I'm a bit concerned about her looking after future DC next year as she has so many cats. Anyone know how cats get on with babies?
