Hi All

This is the new thread taking over from "Feb 2011... Where only us and a select few know"

So sad that not everyone will be joining us on the new thread but here's looking to the future and hoping we start to see some lovely scans and good news from everyone in the next month

OP posts:

Haha I see well I'd prob swap good schools for strict hospital to be honest! Though mustn't complain as schools here are good on the whole. I know what you mean about scans - no babybond here either and my NT scan cost us (well DH) £195!!!!!! But did include bloods as well...

PDR · 20/08/2010 21:48

Sorry that sounds a bit odd! I mean good schools far more important :-)

grigglepuff · 20/08/2010 22:25

Hi everyone,

I received the results from my combined test today and I have been given a 1 in 890 chance of Downs Syndrome. Despite the letter saying it's a low chance I feel pretty upset about this as I was hoping for much lower odds. The letter also said that I would need a 3rd scan at 28 weeks as I had high levels of HCG which although isn't normally linked to abnormalities can mean a small birth weight.
I've been stressing myself out for a lot of today and to be honest googling these things has made it worse (as if it would make it better!) as i found information saying high levels of HCG could mean the baby has Downs.
We'd both said that if we found out there was a high risk we'd have further tests (we haven't been offered any) and would consider termination but now I'm trying to get my head around the idea of not knowing and dealing/coping/going with the flow of whatever happens.
Sorry to offload just a bit down about this and needed to get it out!

jackinthebump · 21/08/2010 08:18

As far as I'm aware the policy some NHS trusts have not to disclose the sex is because some cultures will terminate based on sex alone! Not sure if this really happens so much anymore but just cautious I guess!

sweetnitanitro · 21/08/2010 08:58

jackinthebump, I had heard that too but surely a doctor wouldn't do a termination at 20 weeks unless there was a really good reason? I don't know what the rules are. At the hospital where my SiL had her DD1, they wouldn't tell her the sex at the scan. She was booked in for a C section in the end and had to have a scan the night before and they still wouldn't even tell her then! They've changed their policy now though.

grigglepuff, 1 in 890 is still very low, try not to worry too much. Can you pay for a private amnio test if you are very worried? I hope everything is OK with you and baby, try to relax if you can x

Tarlia · 21/08/2010 09:49

I'm giggling, mention shopping and the thread goes mad Grin. I havnt purchased a single thing yet, but mum sent me some bits when she found out.

We had our first scan yesterday, a NT scan. It was amazing, nothing can prepare you for that. Baby was sleeping but had hiccups when we first started looking. It didn't like being poked at all and stayed cudded into my back, no amount of her roughly poking my stomach worked. She took it off and did her measurements, when she stuck it on again baby had turned so we saw face too and got a picture, but then the monkey rolled over!

I got a 1:596 risk, she said that was good, anything over 350 is. Apparently I'm classed as old and high risk over here so she was very pleased :/. Saw nasal bone etc.

Could my stats be updated please? Due date is now 25/02/11 TIA x

jackinthebump · 21/08/2010 10:58

sweetnitanitro - I don't think any doctor ould terminate at that time either, the concern as I was told was that a few years ago people would terminate using dodgy doctors! I think this has moved on massively now and would be very surprised if it still happens!

Although I guess another reason might be the fear of litigation that the UK now seems so terrified of! Although the trusts that do tell you the sex always say they might be wrong I guess some still stay on the side of caution!

I'm just really glad my trust do tell, didn't used to! I couldn't go a whole 9 months not knowing - I have to open Christmas presents early!:o

angels1 · 21/08/2010 11:12

A very random musing about the whole idea of not being able to be told the sex (my mind jumps about very easily) - are they still only allowed 1 child in China? I rememeber most people wanted boys and lots of baby girls got left/dumped/sent to orphanages/killed so the family could try again for a boy (my current affairs may be very out of date as I think I was told this about 10 years ago at school!). I wonder if they're told the sex there.... sorry, very random but just a thought that occured to me.

moonminmama · 21/08/2010 11:44

The rule has been relaxed now in china although as far as i am aware they are not told the sex for the exact reason you just stated. Very sad Sad

angels1 · 21/08/2010 12:32

mystery solved. thanks moominimama

hoolabombshell · 21/08/2010 12:46

Apologies for lateness Blush, can I please join in your thread? Joined MN about a month ago and have been keeping busy devouring all the info over in the Pregnancy threads...

I am having first scan next Tues so at present have an approx due date of 20th Feb (will let you know if that changes).

It is my first baba, I am 37 and in Glasgow.

Hope everyone is well x

sweetnitanitro · 21/08/2010 13:06

Welcome and congrats hoolabombshell :) How are things going so far?

lgmum2b · 21/08/2010 13:18

Hello Everyone,
I'm new on here. This is my first pregnancy and I'm due on the 20th Feb.
2nd trimester has kicked off nicely with nausea and vomitting heavily reduced unless I let myself get too hungry.
Energy levels back to normal but do feel tired if I overdue it.

I had an 8 week scan early on as twins are not uncommon on both sides of our family. Luckily there was just one little person in my tummy. We had another scan at 12 weeks and everything looks ok.
Just got the letter from the hospital this morning with the combined result for the NS test which says we are low risk which I'm very pleased about, to say the least!

Can't wait for our 20 week scan to find out the gender of our bump. I'm working right up until Christmas and holding off buying anything or decorating the nursery until then.

Look forward to hearing more about how everyone is getting on.

Lou

Wanderingsheep · 21/08/2010 13:49

Hello! Smile

Hope everyone is having a lovely Saturday! I've been busy this morning. DH and I got married on Monday with just family in Gretna Green but we're having our party with friends tonight! I've been decorating the function room. I hope my wedding dress doesn't feel too tight tonight, I've been eating like a pig!

sweetnitanitro · 21/08/2010 14:12

Congratulations! Hope the party goes with a bang Grin

Welcome to lgmum2b :)

Wanderingsheep · 21/08/2010 14:22

Thank you Sweetnitanitro! I'm just hoping that everyone that's important to me turns up!

hoolabombshell · 21/08/2010 15:34

Thanks sweetnitanitro... all is fine, have not really had much sickness although I have been quite tired.

Was made redundant last week though so have about 6 weeks to find myself another job aagh! Am a bit disgruntled at having lost out on SMP, was going to work right up to end Jan/start Feb too.

If anyone has any ideas on whether or not I should tell any prospective employers up from I am pg or not, please let me know!

grigglepuff · 21/08/2010 17:34

cheers Sweetnitanitro I think i was just having a small panic over everything have sufficiently calmed back down now and realised that there are no certainties so I just need to chill out :) apologies for being all moany!

Hello to the new folk on here, congrats wanderingsheep I'm sure it'll be a fab party!

PDR · 21/08/2010 17:42

I think in China the state only pay for your first child, any more and it's up to you to pay for education, healthcare etc which makes it unaffordable for most families to have more than one...

In my husbands culture it is very important to have a son and sons are often the only ones to inherit from their parents (the idea being daughters will get married and join the husbands family) but large families are the norm so haven't heard any stories of baby girls being terminated but then again ultrasound would not be available to the majority.

Still strange that the policy varies across the country though!

moonminmama · 21/08/2010 18:04

We teach about the China 1 child policy to yr 9 pupils. They are always mortified by the fact that families used to abandon baby girls etc. The fact that families with 1 child get priority housing, education and healthcare but families who chose to have more than 1 child are fined, have to pay for education, healthcare and are bottom of the pile for housing mortifies them. Especially when I ask them how many of them have older brothers and sisters and then put it into perspective for them!

It really is a crazy policy.... However to an extent has worked so???

wigglesrock · 21/08/2010 18:05

wandering sheep have a fab time tonight and congratulations Smile

hoolabombshell not sure what to do about employers - I started a new job last month, didn't tell them and now feel really bad about it, told them last week after scan and could see slight!! annoyance all over their faces although they aren't being too pissy!! I won't qualify for SMP but should be fine for Maternity Allowance, good luck

hoolabombshell · 21/08/2010 19:31

Cheers wiggles :), I'll be mulling over how to approach the job hunt in the next few days! Even though we're not legally obliged to fess up to being pg until 15 wks before due date I still think some employers may still think it deceitful or something. Stupid eh?

Tarlia · 22/08/2010 08:21

Hmm, have I upset people or something? Maybe I'm just writing invisible posts Confused

angels1 · 22/08/2010 08:31

not at all tarlia (well, you haven't upset me anyway!). tbh I get the same feeling too....figured I'd bored everyone with posting so much so I've tried to make an effort not to post quite so much...I'm hoping it's just in our overemotional imagination!!

sweetnitanitro · 22/08/2010 08:47

I don't get much time to read the thread properly, every time I sit down I get a 22 mo informing me that it's booby time Grin so sorry I missed your post Tarlia. That's good news about your scan. :)
