Hello! This is my first time on Mumsnet, I'm the grand old age of 34 and this is my first pregnancy. Due date is officially 31st March but thought I'd join the April group as seemed more relevant and first babies are often late, or so I hear! I have been feeling a bit nauseous and my boobs have started to inflate, but wish I felt worse in a way as that would be reassuring somehow ..... Confused

Snowfalls108, edd?

Welcome to all newbies & congrats!

Thought I had better add myself to list as just realised I hadn't done it [pregnancy brain emoticon]

Still not feeling any real symptoms, just v. tired, but was the same last time so not overly concerned. Oh, and need to pee a lot!
Went to docs on Monday & they just noted down that I was pg & happy about it, now got bbooking in on Monday, SO not looking forward to being weighed!

One thing that did crop up though was lovely German lady doc asked my how many DC I would like, to which I said for, & she said they would only do 3 CSs, so this one would ideally need to be natural birth. And I am very worried I won't be able to do it again, or that it will hurt to unbearable levels. So will chat to midwife about all that, when I see one. Apart from that, feeling quite relaxed this time around, wish I didn't have to pick DS up so much, but no choice really, he can't get into own cot, high chair etc. We will probably stop using those around Xmas, his 2nd birthday, so won't have that when I am bigger. How are other 2nd time mums feeling & coping?

Sunshine28, I read through your questions & had some of the same myself last time, so here is my slant on things.

1)If you have a healthy balanced diet, you only need folic acid. All other pg vits ect are, imo, a big money-making scheme. It's a bit like with weddings - stick the word pregnancy or baby in front of anything & you can charge 3 times as much for it. Of course, others may disagree

2)Should be OK, again as long as you were eating balanced diet before with lots of leafy greens & Marmite! But check with doc/midwife if worried

3)I wouldn't dye my hair whilst pg, but not sure if it is advised against. Don't know, but perhaps natural dye eg henna may be safer? Google it or ask doc.

4)I still try & do 20 mins exercise bike per day, doc said if I did it before becoming pg, no need not to carry on as she says pg is not an illness! Last time was walking 5 miles per day (work & back) up to 37 weeks, when I went on ML. What I also loved was Aquanatal (from 14 weeks), like pg yoga in the water - they teach you different exercises for moving baby down/round later on, & water takes weight off your bump. I also made lots of really good friends there who I still see once a week, 2 years on. See if you have it iin your area, cannot recommend highly enough.

5)Not sure, perhaps say the chemicals make you wheezy or similar?

Hope that helps & that I haven't drivelled on too much!

Anyway, DS being extra good today & has been aasleep for 3 hours & still not stirring so I guess I should make the most of it & do some work!

Have a good day all Smile

jenduck · 11/08/2010 12:59

I mean I said 4 DC when doc asked me how many...! Doh!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 11/08/2010 13:10

Oh I feel sick today. Really struggled to make lunch for DS without puking :( [feeling sorry for self emoticon]

Osch · 11/08/2010 16:12

Sunshine 28 - Highlights are fine during pregnancy as the die is not applied directly to your scalp. I had them throughout both of my previous pregnancys.... HTH

youngblowfish · 11/08/2010 16:17

Lovely ladies,

I'd love to write a long post, but I am feeling sick, tired and sorry for myself, so I just wanted to share with you a link for cheap Pregnacare. In principal, I completely agree with jenduck about buying pregnancy specific vitamins being an expensive gimmick. DH, who is medically trained, thinks they are a waste of money. However, as the tablets are less than half price and I am a sucker for a bargain, I did get myself three boxes on my last trip to Superdrug. They contain folic acid, vitamin D and a dozen of other, apparently useful, things.

On a side note, how do you keep yourself awake without resorting to unhealthy levels of caffeine? Confused

Ulysses · 11/08/2010 16:38

Hi youngblowfish

I've got the Pregnacare vitamins too because they were only marginally more expensive than the prescription I got from the docs for folic acid. Have to say though that they are the size of horse pills and you need to eat them with your main meal. I am totally struggling with this and have missed a couple already so will probably just get the folic acid on their own anyway.

There is one of the B vitamins that supposed to help with sickness but it doesn't seem to be working too well if that is the case!

I was a 10 a day coffee addict but now I've had one cup since finding out and the idea of it makes me bleurgh!! I was having a couple of cups of tea but even the thought of that has subsided and I'm on something with a bit fizz.

As for the tiredness I have found no cure other than some rest! My afternoon slump started early and I can't wait till DD has gone to be bed so I can get my feet up. Rollon seven o clock!!

Sunshine28 · 11/08/2010 17:03

Janduck thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions! You have really put my mind at ease! I am definitely going to look into the whole Aquanatal thing - sounds fab!

Osch - thanks for the highlights advice. I have booked myself in for a half head of highlights as have a wedding to go to next week. They are doing a half price sale so I guess I can justify it :)

JustKeepSwimming · 11/08/2010 17:40

Petalouda · 11/08/2010 19:00

Hello all!

Sorry to see that people are feeling rubbish today. I've finally told my family, and it feels great to be able to talk to them! Especially my sis, who (currently at 24wks) said that she only suffered nausea for about 3 weeks.

Had an awful morning yesterday, almost puked over the bedroom! After an early night and brekkie in bed this morning, I've felt almost normal today! Grin

In response to something I read a few days ago (felt too rubbish to look at the computer for long at the time) - my booking in appointment isn't till 2nd september, by which time I'll be 10+3. Which seems a rather long time to be left to my own devices with my 'bun'.

And regarding hair dye - lush do fantastic henna colour. It's fantastic, I covered my dyed blonde at christmas when I couldn't afford highlights any more. I love it! Smile

Take care of those tadpoles, folks. x

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 11/08/2010 19:09

JKS - Grin

I have done some exercise! Shock This DVD. It's pretty good, she goes at quite a lick though and it's hard to keep up!

nitnat84 · 11/08/2010 19:39

Hello ladies,

Lovely to see our list is growing!

I'm just taking folic acid and trying to up my red meat intake. I did buy the pregnacare vits but find it hard to swallow them without gagging.

And, I have to admit, I dye my hair...

Zidonie · 11/08/2010 20:52

Hi all,

Regarding exercise, I was told that I should stop running when I got pregnant with DC1. I know some people on internet say it's fine but I don't want to take chances.

I do dye my hair and will stop chemical dyes now that I'm pregnant. However I intend to visit my local Aveda salon because they do natural dyes and I feel safer with it.

Do you also think that those few weeks are very slow? If only I could fast forward to the point where somebody officially tells me that there's a baby in there...

Snowfalls108 · 11/08/2010 22:17

Hi all,

Unfortunately I've had a mc confirmed so thats me out.
Hope all goes well for you all.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 11/08/2010 22:32

Zidonie - that is strange advice about the running! Every medical person I've ever spoken to encourages exercise during pregnancy, especially if you have been exercising before.

Snowfalls I'm so sorry for your loss :( Look after yourself.

NotAnotherNewNappy · 11/08/2010 22:38

Snowfalls - I am so so sorry for you Sad

tlat · 12/08/2010 08:11

Hi everyone! I just got my BFP! It's my first time and I am so happy to have found this thread with some experienced mummies on! I am due on the 19th ( I think according to an online pregnancy calculator). I am wavering being very excited and worried that it is still very early days and things going wrong! Is the normal? Confused

nitnat84 · 12/08/2010 08:11

So sorry to hear this Snowfalls. Look after yourself.

tlat · 12/08/2010 09:02

Blush Doh! I just realised that I only read the first page of the thread!
Sad Snowfalls I am so sorry to hear of your loss!

NotAnotherNewNappy · 12/08/2010 09:21

Welciome tlat!

Does anybody else feel like they're showing already? Or have I just been eating too many chips?

Re exercise - You def need to keep fit or even just keep moving, during pregnancy. Labour is a big ask of your body, like running a marathon, so it stands to reason that you will deal with it better if you're in good shape (strong heart, toned muscles and not carrying too much extra weight). Just be sensible and listen to your body.

Running in early pregnancy would be fine but I can't imagine it would be v comfortable or good for your back with a big bump. Swimming, yoga and walking are all fab later on. I'm a keen cyclist (cycled 20miles yeserday Grin) but know that I will have to give this up for a few months when I get bigger and my centre of gravity starts to shift - or else I'll falling off the bike all the time!
