Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Afternoon All!

Kitty1981 that sounds rubbish, hope you're feeling better. We were just talking today at school about the logistics of having to pop out to vom/wee etc. & the legalities of leaving kids in science rooms without supervision.

Apparently I'm properly showing now - some of my chemistry students asked their biology teacher if I was pg, stating "it's SO obvious!". Hopefully they're referring to my usually svelte appearance!

And, joy of joys, we have OFSTED in on thurs & fri! So, goodbye early nights, so-long break & lunchtimes spent eating, I'll come back for you all on monday!

hippy3 · 28/09/2010 19:06

Josie 314 I am a first timer..and due on the same date..although that is to be clarified as I am due my scan in around 16 days...bring on the scan say just want to know everything is ok....

Im feeling great today. I have been blessed with an amazing partner who has literally been doing everything for me for the last couple of weeks. Getting up with me before work, making my lunch, cleaning, making me very healthy dinners...literally everything and i am feeling a bit guilty. i seem to have turned into waynetta slob....and live in my pyjamas/ jogging bottoms as soon as i get in from work!

Although not guilty enough to get up and do the cleaning etc....:)

Am having anxiety about when to tell my boss im pregnant. I am thinking of leaving it until after the scan... im on contract and they were hoping to employ me full time but cant see that happening now!

Loving being on this thread feels like part of a community !

josie314 · 28/09/2010 19:52

Hi Hippy! Glad to have a due date buddy!

I had some bleeding a couple of weeks ago (very scary!) and the due date is based on the scan they did then.

I told my boss yesterday, but I'm a bit of a unique situation. I'm type 1 diabetic, and so I need to go to the hospital every other week. I had my first regular appointment last week, and it took 3 hours (!!!), so there was no way I could keep it secret for the month until my scan...just too much work to miss. Normally I would want to wait as long as possible.

Jaylar · 28/09/2010 19:55

Hi folks
Had booking in appointment today. All a bit of a headache even getting the appointment but that's a long dull story.Because it was so last minute I told a big fat lie at work that my daughter's nursery had called and I had to leave to get her. Feel very guilty about it but I wouldnt have been able to get away otherwise and legally I'm allowed time off for the appointment.

It's just that I'm super paranoid about work finding out. I'm on a 12 month FT maternity cover which has been extended by 4 months as the postholder is dithering like you wouldn't believe about what hours if any she wants to come back to. They're going through the bureacracy of trying to arrange a job share but I've got zilch in writing from them. I'm already 11+2 and starting to show (I think).

The difference between having a contract and not is like night and day. Not just for the income. I had DD at the end of a fixed term contract with nothing to go back to and had to go through the stress of job apps, interviews then juggling what childcare options were available at short-notice. I'm so lucky that my partner was able to negotiate pt hours at no notice to allow me to take on a FT job. PT ones are really rare in my field. I know it's not rational but I find myself getting really jealous of women who have permanent contracts and have the luxury of a year off with their baby then choosing what hours to come back. It just all seems so easy in comparison.

Oh well. Moan over. There's nothing I can do about it. On the upside midwife today was very supportive of a home birth. MW I had with DD made me feel like a neglectful cow and dangerous would be mother for even suggesting it. (Had super easy birth in the hospital in the end. Had more painful migraines, lucky I know). Glad to see that there are a few of us looking into the home birth thing. Trimester 2 here we come!

NotAnotherNewNappy · 28/09/2010 20:11

My God, this thread is enormous! Did everybody else get pregnant on holiday too? Grin

Jaylar · 28/09/2010 20:22

Hello

Yes as a matter of fact I did get up the duff while on holiday. As happened with DD too. Had never made the connection before.

As we're stopping at 2 must make sure not to take any risks on hol in future. Though can't imagine ever wanting to have sex again the way I'm feeling at the moment.

Petalouda · 28/09/2010 20:23

Jaylar and Hippy3,

I've just missed these issues by a hair's breadth. I only started my permanent contract on 1st sept!

However, having been broody for a few years now, I've kept an eye on eligibility etc in terms of temp contracts.

I think the big deal is, if they would have given you another contract/extended it, then they can't discriminate simply because you're pregnant. So, worst case scenario, they let you go but then hire someone on another 1yr contract then you have every right to take them to a tribunal for discrimination. (Which no normal person is going to fancy straight after giving birth - but it might be worth mentioning on your way out!)

Another thing I've heard is that if you've worked for a company for longer than 12 months (I think, it might be 2 yrs) you are entitled to the same rights as a permanent member of staff.

You could ask around at work, see how long other people had to wait before they were made permanent, (especially note any male/female discrepancies). See if you can find out if there are any real restrictions on employing you permanently. For instance, in my job it was a case of budgets being crazy tight, but yet who would teach my classes if I wasn't there? They would have had to employ someone.

Give the citizens advice bureau a ring, they'll be able to give you proper advice.

I have to admit, I got really lucky with my contract. I love where I work, and felt so terribly guilty when I found out I was pg. It does look incredibly convenient!

However, Jaylar if it helps (and I'm sure it won't!) we're so skint I'll be back at work full time within 6 months!

Ooh, and I'm in homebirth club! Although our new house is right near a midwife led unit which is reputedly "like a 5 star hotel" which everyone from the hospital 30 miles away tries to get transferred to after their births! So, it might come down to a decision based on whether I want to risk making a mess on the new pale carpets! (is that too shallow?)

hippy3 · 28/09/2010 20:27

i am in a really similar position... I am on a fixed contract until the end of november... they took me on talking about taking me on permanently when the post becomes available.... however in the mean time i have fallen pregnant, so cant see them extending my contract even... I am just keeping my fingers crossed. I like you will not get any maternity pay apart from MA. Which is better than nothing.
I am on a decent enough wage at the moment so when im not working it is going to hit us hard. ! but what can we do...?

I am thinking of asking my boss if they are thinking of extending my contract. The woman whose post I am filling isnt coming back until march..which would be perfect ! if thats the case ill be happy out...am just worried taht if they find out im pregnant then they wont keep me on..... ill let you know how it goes.. Hmm

cantmummyhaveabreak · 28/09/2010 20:32

hello all...

Not been on since when i first posted...

Will try and keep up a bit more now...

Am now 9+5 today. Surrobaby seems pretty happy- i'm so sick- have got hyperemesis again (now the 3rd out of 4 pregnancies :( ) but the meds are helping a lot and i'm getting through most days without being sick. The nausea is still really bad, but trying to eat my way past it!!

I look like i'm about 20weeks pg already, well and truely in maternity- in fact i'm in a pair of my 'normal' joggers and even they are now pulling me in at the waist and not fitting well at all!! Blush

hippy3 · 28/09/2010 20:33

PETALOUDA

sorry have just seen your post as well. I will get in touch with citizens advice thanks for the advice....I know work isnt meant to discrimnate against you if your pregnant, call me cynical but it does happen !

p.s. how do I do bold lettering? hence the reason for the capitals. ! sorry...

Been off work sick for the last couple of days but back tomorrow and thinking of telling work this work. My line manager has known since 2 days after me as she guessed straight away as soon as we went for lunch and I had an OJ as I was 'driving'. She's pregnant too (due in March) and it's a bit of a nightmare as there's only 3 of us in our team and 2 of us will be off at the same time! She has told our boss now I've had my 13wk scan and he seems ok about it. Need to tell the other girl in our team who is the one I feel really bad for. She was pretty much my first thought when the 'pregnant' sign came up (sure she'll be delighted about that!)

JustKeepSwimming · 28/09/2010 21:40

I'm a SAHM at the moment so not got the same concerns about work but i hope none of you get discriminated against, sadly i've read of it often happening.

So, i wore mat trousers today and i felt huge and i looked huge (according to others).
Maybe i have my dates wrong
I know i had a period before the cycle i thought i got pg on, but we had been ttcing for a few months.
I think i may have posted on a ttcing thread about whether i took any pg tests earlier/too early/pre-AF, will have to search them out!

Or, more likely, i just have nothing resembling a stomach muscle and it's all just popped back out to where it was 2.5yrs ago Grin Blush

JustKeepSwimming · 28/09/2010 21:52

Yes i'm pretty sure i'm just Mrs Wobbly Belly, took tests on Aug 2/3/4, all negative, then positive a few days later, so 99% sure my dates are right, ho hum Grin

1stTimeMother · 29/09/2010 08:08

thanks youngblowfish! Very excited about how many of us there are, and that I'm not the only slightly scared 1st timer.

Got my booking appointment with MW this afternoon - DH is coming with me, is this normal & will MW be ok with it?

cantmummyhaveabreak · 29/09/2010 09:31

1sttimemother- it's quite normal for OH's to attend at least the booking in app... he will most likely need to answer questions on family health etc, as you will yours. He's not needed, but it's nice for them to be part of the whole process too!!

hippy3 · 29/09/2010 18:34

let me tell you all a little bit about my day at work today,

got in for 8.30...dragging myself out of my bed, and it was still dark. Sat at my desk and started yawning at 8.45.... closed the door to my office over for the day and proceeded to try to look like I was busy.
Did a lot of moving my computer mouse around and moving papers around, think I typed two things. Boss came in to check I was ok as normally I leave my door open...i just said I had loads of work today and didnt want to be distracted ! My brain REFUSED to function today.
Seriously though about leaving early to go home for a snooze but dont want to give anything away yet and also dont want to be seen as being a bit slack..as need the contract until march... anyway am delighted to be home now and funnily enough dont feel half as tired !! what is with that? Confused

Karoleann · 29/09/2010 18:53

Hi all, I'm not posted much either - I'm about 11 weeks and showing too - but it is number 3.

My SIL had her first today, fairly quick birth in the pool but tore badly and poor thing has to stay in for a couple of days.

I'm feeling much less sick now which is great, but brain isn't great, I had an exam today for my masters (hopefully I've passed)
but I could have done with it working on the same level as usual.

I've my Nuchal fold and triple test a week on monday, can't wait to find out the sex.

Hope everyone sorts out employment stuff - I only work one day a week and am self employed so get MA.

lowra · 29/09/2010 19:45

Hi ladies, just updating my due date by a couple of days. I'm now due 2nd April.

Had my NHS dating scan and a private nuchal scan yesterday, results very positive and it felt amazing to see our little baby moving about.

Also starting to feel much better, energy levels rising and sickness subsiding. For everyone suffering 1st trimester sickness and exhaustion, it does get better (well it has for me anyway!)

So pleased to read all the great scan stories, and good luck to everyone still looking forward to the 1st scan :)

sloathy · 29/09/2010 20:00

Hello, can I join?

I'm 10+2 (EDD 26 April) with my first and have had a horrible day :-(

Sorry for the long post...

Have been dragging myself into work for the last two weeks despite feeling terrible because of the usual capacity that women have for not wanting to let other people down and also not wanting to let on to my boss (had a mc back in June so wanted to keep it quiet). I've had the odd day off here and there when I really really couldn't cope with the 45 minute commute by train (how i've managed not to vomit on public transport truly is a mystery -must be mind over matter and the power of polos!).

But a colleague eating sardines out of a tin on the next door desk was the final straw and I had to ask my boss if I could go home. Turns out she wanted a "chat" with me anyway about my "absences" - I felt so ill and had been so proud of myself for getting in 99% of the time that I burst into tears and told her. She was fine but in a really "corporate" way - it was all "Well I understand the underlying cause of your absences" and I'll need to discuss it others and put a report into HR" etc. There was no "congratulations". I said I hadn't wanted to tell anyone until after my scan but she said " Well since your're clearly trying for a baby this scenario was bound to arise at some point..."

She wasn't mean or anything but I suddenly felt very vulnerable in the workplace which it upset me a lot because I'm used to feeling confident at work and being considered a "safe pair of hands" and now I feel like I've got a black mark on my record for absenteeism. I also felt really exposed discussing such a personal thing with my boss and like it had all been taken out of my control.

Anyway - felt better after a good cry on DP.

Again - sorry about the long post!

Jaylar · 29/09/2010 20:09

Petalouda and Hippy 3

Thanks for support and good to know others have had same dilemma with work. Had my 12 week scan today which was magic so work issues seem irrelavant. I work for a large university so have decided to make appointment with HR Officer to see confidentially where I stand. Always good to be armed. And I do appreciate how lucky I am in that we can afford for us to get by on one salary for the short-term anyway.

And you're def not shallow about the cream carpets. We've got them too but am investing in a huge tarp, which we'll need if we manage a water birth. My cousin had a home birth with her 4th in a birthing pool and her 3 eldest kids were playing it as an indoor swimming pool for the week before her youngest arrived. So she got her money's worth. That's one of my reasons for a home birth. They've only got one pool at the hospital and I couldn't get through labour without it. I would have to drag any other woman out of it or jump in with her. Who would have thought a warm bath would be able to take away all pain. It was amazing.

Jaylar · 29/09/2010 20:18

Sloathy - your boss sounds like an insensitive cow. It sounds like she was caught unawares, she was all set to give you a bollocking and was unable to change tack for a very different situation. She has zero emotional intelligence and offered you no support at what is a really difficult time.

Think about taking back some control and have a chat with her about how her response made you feel and how it was inappropriate. Putting a report into HR is not a normal or human response to a member off your team telling you (a) that they are pregnant and (b) they are overcoming horrrible symptoms to meet their work committments.

If it makes you feel better when i told my last boss that I was pregnant (I waited till I was 5 months because he was a known arse and it was none of his business)his first words were "I take it it was an accident".

I burst out laughing. What else could I do?

The world is full of insensitive numbskulls. You stand tall girl and don't let them rob you of your confidence.

hippy3 · 29/09/2010 20:44

sloathy your boss sounds like a cow..and who would eat sardines out of a tin !!! (apologies if anyone is having cravings for sardines!)

Dont worry about your boss too much. You are entitled to take the time if you feel sick..your also entitled to take time for antenatal appointments...

In a way at least they know. I really hope tomorrow is a better day for you. :)

Liv77 · 29/09/2010 20:58

When I told my boss I was pregnant with my DS he looked petrified and the first thing he said was "um is that good". He seemed to regain his composure once I assured him it was. I suppose it's quite sweet that he didn't want to say the wrong thing. He seemed better prepared when I told him I was PG this time round.

lucielooo · 29/09/2010 21:11

I'm amazed that several people's first question has been 'did you want to be/was it an accident' - it's so rude! DP and I have been together 3 years, and we already have quite a family orientated lifestyle as we have DP's sons most weekends. Why is it a suprise that we are having a child?!?!

sloathy it sounds like you have had a horrible day and your boss is being a bit harsh. Is it worth talking to her again?
